HAUPPAUGE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) — A Long Island woman, whose son was the pilot of United Flight 93 when it crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania on Sept. 11, 2001, has been living without heat and running water for weeks. Ilse Homer, 83, said it all began when the boiler in her Hauppauge home broke on Thanksgiving. The water had to be turned off on Dec. 16 after several pipes burst from the cold, flooding her house and destroying many of her belongings, including furniture and memorabilia from her son. “I was afraid for my little granddaughter. She’s 11 years old and she was coughing and she was sneezing. And I was coughing and I was sneezing and I was so afraid we might catch pneumonia,” Homer said. Homer said Sears failed to honor her contract to fix the broken boiler, which was under warranty. “Twenty-five messages from Sears on my telephone. They made an appointment and then the day before the appointment came they cancelled,” Homer said. “You can’t live like this,” her daughter, Monique, said. Home Depot, Weil-McLain and Popular Plumbing will donate their time and products worth more than $10,000 to fix the problems free of charge. “We’re going to do whatever it takes,” Home Depot spokesman Jeffrey Kuhr said. “When we looked at the extent of the job a lot of it won’t be known until we swap out the boiler because with the water turned off we do know there’s a lot of locations that the pipes burst.” Homer is eternally grateful. “For free, I can’t believe this, it’s beyond me,” Homer said. She is staying in a hotel until everything is repaired. Sears did not return requests for comment.

HARTFORD, Conn. (CBSNewYork/AP) Gov. Dannel P. Malloy has decided not to issue a travel ban as a winter storm that could bring more than a foot of snow bears down on Connecticut. The Democrat says he is working with leaders in neighboring states and does not want create dangerous traffic backups at the borders. The governor has ordered all non-essential first- and second-shift state employees to stay home. Most schools across the state also closed for the day. Malloy says high winds could lead to lengthy power outages, noting that crews will not go up in bucket trucks if winds exceed 30 mph. More than 100 warming centers have been open in 34 towns across the state. Malloy says the state has 634 state plow trucks and 250 contractors working to clear the highways. NEW YORK (WFAN) — Dave Gettleman hasn’t made up his mind yet about which quarterbacks will be on the Giants’ roster in 2018. But he did indicate Tuesday that he’s not afraid to make a tough decision about Eli Manning’s future, should it come to that. “At the end of the day, it’s about winning,” the new Giants general manager told WFAN’s “The Afternoon Drive With Carlin, Bart and Maggie.” “That’s what it’s about. That’s why I’m here.” Gettleman reiterated that he wants to evaluate Manning’s 2017 game film before making a decision about the two-time Super Bowl MVP’s future. With the Giants holding the second-overall draft pick in April, Gettleman has a lot to consider. “I’m going to study the tape on Eli,” said Gettleman, a former Panthers GM who also spent 15 years working in the Giants’ front office. “I’m going to look at it chronologically. I was only able to watch a couple of Giant games front to back, and one of them happened to be Philadelphia — the second Philly game. The guy that I saw that day was the guy that helped put two rings on my fingers.” MORE: Keidel: If He Is Done Here, Manning, Appropriately, Went Out A Winner Giants coach Ben McAdoo’s decision to bench Manning in November was met by a swift backlash from fans. But Gettleman said he won’t allow outside pressure to impact his decision making. “This job is not for the faint of heart,” he said. “Like I said, you’ve got to put your big-boy pants on. You can’t be afraid of it. My gosh, I’m so excited I can’t see straight. Wherever you go, there’s challenges.” Gettleman said he plans to speak with Manning soon. COACHING SEARCH Meanwhile, Gettleman is searching for a coach to replace McAdoo, who was fired in December. The Giants’ GM said experience is important, but it’s not a deal breaker. Some names the Giants have been linked to in media reports include Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia, Panthers defensive coordinator Steve Wilks, Vikings defensive coordinator Pat Shurmur, Eagles defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz and former Broncos assistant head coach Eric Studesville. McDaniels, Shurmur and Schwartz have been NFL head coaches before. Studesville was the Broncos’ interim head coach for four games in 2010. Patricia and Wilks have never been head coaches. FOLLOW: ‘The Afternoon Drive’ On Twitter “One of the first things you’re looking for is intelligence and vision, because you can’t have a guy who’s sitting down in the weeds,” Gettleman explained. “He’s got to get up on top, he’s got to see the big picture, and he’s got to proactively see issues that are coming down the road, instead of being reactive in putting out fires. “You’re looking for leadership. You’ve got to have someone who has that quality about him that makes people really believe in him and want to go play for. … And then the other thing you need is you need toughness.” BECKHAM’S CONTRACT Another matter Gettleman is facing is Odell Beckham Jr.’s contract situation. The three-time Pro Bowl wide receiver is under contract for 2018, but he’s said he wants to be the NFL’s highest-paid player. Subscribe To ‘The Afternoon Drive’ On ITunes Gettleman said he won’t discuss any contract negotiations but mentioned that he and Beckham had a “nice conversation” Saturday. “He’s a very gifted player for his position,” Gettleman said. “And there’s no doubting the talent.” To listen to the full interview with Gettleman, click on the audio player above.

MINEOLA, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) — Around the New York area, homeowners were scrambling to pay property taxes before a new federal code takes effect next year. “So yeah, I mean it’s unfortunate, I don’t feel like there’s much I can do about it,” Amid from Mineola said. He waited on line for over an hour to prepay a portion of his taxes to the Town of Hempstead. It took 1010 WINS’ Andrew Falzon almost two minutes to walk from one end of the line to the other. People like Martha got stuck waiting outside. “Especially in the freezing cold, very little time to take care of all your paperwork. I had to scramble this morning, it’s not fair,” she said. Lines were long, and the town has been overwhelmed by people who wanted to pay their taxes early. The town has taken 5,000 payments in three days. They say it’s a 3,000 percent increase in tax payments.

By Benjamin Block » More Columns Taking everything in stride, he’s boxing’s Pollyanna. Shakur Stevenson battered Oscar Mendoza into a second-round stoppage Saturday night inside a raucous Theater at Madison Square Garden. It was the biggest card of the southpaw’s young professional career. The 20-year-old featherweight was the table setter for the ESPN telecast, which co-featured possible distant future title-fight contenders Michael Conlan of Ireland and Vasyl Lomachenko of Ukraine. Shakur Stevenson, left, lands a punch on Oscar Mendoza on Dec. 9, 2017, at Madison Square Garden. (Photo by Steven Ryan/Getty Images) It was Stevenson’s fourth win in as many pro fights. Yet equally as important as it was for him — a young fighter with heavy expectations — to maintain his pristine win-loss record, it was even more vital that the Newark native scored his second technical knockout. Before the contest, Stevenson’s detractors — which there aren’t many — began chirping about how continuing to win fights would be fine but that Stevenson needed to start executing more power along the way. We’re clearly in an age in which empty opinions are eclipsing quality analysis — and they’ll never go away entirely — but this specific chatter touched a nerve with Stevenson. He acknowledged that it got to him when he spoke after disposing of Mendoza. “There’s been a lot of talk this week about me holding. I don’t hold. I’m a fighter,” Stevenson said succinctly and defiantly. There was no doubt about that, either, as CompuBox, the longtime statistics tracker for all major boxing events, recorded that Stevenson landed 52 punches to Mendoza’s four. There was no holding by Stevenson. In fact, many said he “let his hands go,” which is a high compliment for any boxer to receive. It’s a term long used to describe a fighter who is aggressive and free and holds nothing back. Also, being on the undercard of the headlining two-time gold medalist Lomachenko, who stunningly made Guillermo Rigondeaux quit after six rounds, was huge for Stevenson. It allowed him to spend valuable prefight time with the Ukranian, who many in the boxing community value as the No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter on the planet. “Sparring with Vasyl Lomachenko was great work for this fight,” Stevenson said. “He’s one the best fighters in the world.” In May, following his first-round KO of Carlos Suarez in the main arena at the Garden, Stevenson told WFAN.com that he wanted a title fight by the time he was 21 or 22 years old. He also added that Lomachenko would be “my dream fight.” Stevenson may have inched a little closer to that dream by getting to spar a few rounds with Lomachenko, but there’s no indication that a fight between the two is on the horizon or even close to happening. Just in case they do meet, which probably wouldn’t happen for at least three to five years, if at all, it’s very unlikely that either fighter revealed very much. However, one piece of collateral damage that did come from their prefight work was that Stevenson displayed an aggression Saturday night that rivaled Lomachenko’s. After Stevenson’s bout but before Lomachenko’s, Conlan shined in his second time fighting in the Garden. He got the easy decision, winning every round over Luis Fernando Molina for his fifth career victory, elevating his record to 5-0. It was also his first win that wasn’t a knockout. Top Rank promoter Bob Arum, who was front and center Saturday, has persisted that fight fans will at some point see Conlan versus Stevenson, prognosticating that when it happens, it will be as good a matchup as Thomas Hearns-Sugar Ray Leonard was. A lot still has to go right though. And Arum himself can’t guarantee when Top Rank’s youngest and brightest stars will face off. It’s likely more than a year away, should it happen at all. For the immediate future, expect both fighters to continue to mow down the featherweight division until there’s no other choice but to determine who is the best between them. Watching Stevenson’s mature style in the ring — outsmarting and starting to outmuscle opponents — it’s easy to take his youthfulness for granted. When he checked into the Garden for his 9 p.m. fight Saturday, Penn Station was still humming as New Yorkers struggled to navigate the first snowfall of the season. Stevenson was flanked by a few family members and boxing brother Terence Crawford, as he slid in through the Mecca’s back entrance, free of any fanfare. Wearing a backpack over a winter jacket, dressed in sweatpants and a pair of Air Jordan 11 Retros, he appeared no different than virtually any high school or college kid who gets dropped off for a sporting event. The only difference is that this “kid” has a lethal boxing prowess, and he wasn’t being dropped off. He was arriving. Follow Ben on Twitter at @benjaminblock21

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Get out the white suit and polyester shirt because disco is back in Brooklyn! Fans on Wednesday will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the movie “Saturday Night Fever,” starring John Travolta, at the very spot where the most iconic scenes were filmed. The famed “2001 Odyssey” in Bay Ridge, which is now a Chinese restaurant, is being reopened for a one-night only party. Shazam Events production manager Beverly Fish said the famous light-up dance floor has been recreated. “The one that we’re bringing in today is a little more basic. It’ll be changing colors and moving along with the music,” Fish said. “I like capturing that era and hopefully transporting people back to that time period.” The movie’s lead actress Karen Lynn Gorney, who played Stephanie, will be there along with other cast members. The Trammps, The Village People and Carol Douglas will perform. “I want everyone to come out and have a great time and go back in time and forget everything else that’s happening in the world and enjoy,” Fish said. 1010 WINS is a proud sponsor of the “Saturday Night Fever” anniversary event, which is sold out.
