NEW YORK (AP) — Mika Zibanejad scored the go-ahead goal on a power play, Henrik Lundqvist made 28 saves in relief and the New York Rangers beat the Calgary Flames 4-3 on Friday night to snap a four-game losing streak. Zibanejad scored his 16th goal of the season at 12:41 off a cross-ice pass from J.T. Miller. Lundqvist replaced Ondrej Pavelec after Pavelec injured his knee in the first period. Lundqvist came out to start the second with score tied at 1. The Rangers won for the first time since Jan. 26 at San Jose, and ended Calgary’s three-game winning streak. New York had lost 10 of its last 13 games. Rangers forward Rick Nash, likely to be traded by the Feb. 26 deadline because of his expiring contract, tied it at 3 at 6:41 of the third with his 17th goal of the season. Michael Grabner and Kevin Hayes also scored. Matthew Tkachuk put Calgary ahead 3-2 with his 18th goal of the season at 18:27 of the second on a power play. Brett Kulak had his first NHL goal, and Curtis Lazar also scored for the Flames. The Flames had won the first two games of their six-game trip, beating New Jersey 3-2 on Thursday night. Grabner put the Rangers ahead 2-1 at 11:52 of the second when the puck deflected off Calgary defenseman Marc Giordano and went past goalie Mike Smith. Grabner has a team-high 22 goals. Lazar quickly tied the contest for the Flames with his first of the season at 12:37, nudging the puck past Lundqvist when the goaltender went for a poke check attempt. Hayes opened the scoring for the Rangers, knocking in a rebound on the power-play at 7:53 of the first period. The Rangers seemed to come out with relieved purpose a day after the organization released a letter to fans asking them to bear with a potential rebuild ahead with the league’s trade deadline looming in just over two weeks. Nash figures to be the most prominent player to depart since his contract is expiring. The 33-year-old forward needs two points to reach 800 in his NHL career. The Rangers outshot the Flames 20-8 in the opening period. But Calgary managed the tie the contest at 1 when Kulak scored his first NHL goal at 18:15. Pavelec left the contest with a knee injury adding to the Rangers lost injury list that now includes defenseman and captain Ryan McDonagh who was out against the Flames with an upper body injury. Before the game, Rangers coach Alain Vigneault said he still believes his squad can make the playoffs – though the roster he will be working with remains to be determined. Two defensemen made their debuts for the Rangers — Neal Pionk and John Gilmour. Both were recalled from AHL Hartford. The 22-year-old Pionk has one goal and 16 assists in 48 games with Hartford. He played two years at the University of Minnesota-Duluth then signed with the Rangers last May. Gilmour, 24, had six goals and 20 assists in 44 games with the Wolfpack. He was a seventh-round pick by the Flames in 2013. He signed as a free agent the Rangers in 2016 after playing four years at Providence College. Defenseman Brendan Smith, who was waived on Thursday, was assigned to AHL Hartford on Friday. NOTES: The teams meet again on March 2 in Calgary. … The Rangers continued to be without injured defensemen Marc Staal and Kevin Shattenkirk as well as forwards Chris Kreider, Pavel Buchnevich and Jimmy Vesey. UP NEXT: Flames: At New York Islanders on Sunday night. Rangers: At Winnipeg on Sunday. (Copyright 2018 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.)

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) — The government’s key witness in its bribery case against a former top aide to Democratic New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo says he participated in bribery schemes with his longtime friend. Todd Howe began his testimony Monday morning as prosecutors try to prove 48-year-old Joseph Percoco accepted over $300,000 in bribes from three businessmen. #BREAKING Todd Howe next witness for the prosecution in the corruption trial of former @NYGovCuomo aide Joe Percoco snd co-defendants. #1010WINS — Juliet Papa (@winsjuliet) February 5, 2018 Percoco faces bribery, extortion and other charges. He and several others are accused of paying and accepting bribes and rigging bids in the awarding of state contracts. Peroco’s lawyers say the longtime aide and Cuomo confidant did nothing wrong. Howe says he joined bribery schemes with Percoco from 2010 to 2016 and claims they referred to the payoffs as “ziti.” He says he hired Percoco out of college three decades ago and considered him the closest thing to a brother he’s had. Howe says he wanted to help when Percoco told him he had financial problems in 2014. Howe admitted he stole hundreds of thousands of dollars from his employer and owed over $1 million to the IRS. Now he works as a groundskeeper in Idaho. He told the judge, “There’s a lot less pressure there,” 1010 WINS’ Juliet Papa reported. In his opening statement , Peroco’s lawyer called Howe a congenital and pathological liar. Howe pleaded guilty in 2016 to federal crimes including bribery and corruption. He is awaiting sentencing. NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — With the flu virus going around, some parents may be concerned about their children and close contact sports. Is it a good idea to let your child go to their sports practice or game when flu season kicks into high gear? Gavin O’Day, 17, stayed home from Manasquan High School on Friday. “My heads killing me, and just really tired,” he said. His mom said he won’t be playing sports over the weekend, to protect him and others, but on Thursday night, her daughter was on the basketball court. “Oh, we are in a gymnasium. You can hear everyone hacking, especially on the court. You could see them rubbing noses, touching the ball, sitting on the bench, touching faces,” his mother Meaghan said. Dr. Sal Pepe of Coastal Urgent Care in Wall warned that close contact during sports like basketball or ice hockey doesn’t help anyone. “Look at your son or daughter, and might look as per usual, still might be contagious,” he said. Don’t be fooled, just because your child is excited to get out of the house and play. “Ya know when kids want to play they will kind of downplay their symptoms because what you don’t want to do is get the whole team sick,” Dr. John Donadeo said. Another major concern is dehydration. If your son or daughter had a fever, they may have sweat it out. Overextending themselves at a game is not safe. “Tamiflu kind of gives you a little perk. Tamiflu reduces the time of being sick 2 to 3 days, makes symptoms less severe,” Dr. Donadeo said. Doctors said the best method to stay healthy is to keep washing your hands, eating healthy, and taking vitamins. Doctors said even when kids feel healthy again they can still be contagious for anywhere from five days to two weeks after recovery.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) — The terror suspect accused of driving a rented truck down the West Side bike path and leaving eight people dead was back in court Tuesday. As WCBS 880’s Marla Diamond reported, it was the first time Sayfullo Saipov appeared in court since his attorneys sent a letter to U.S. District Judge Vernon Broderick, saying he would be willing to plead guilty to the Halloween truck attack if Attorney General Jeff Sessions agrees not to seek the death penalty. Saipov’s attorneys argue it would be the quickest way for the victims’ families to gain closure. Sessions has until Sept. 1 to make a decision. At the pretrial hearing Tuesday, Saipov’s attorneys said jury selection alone could take a month or more. Both sides said testimony would take at least six weeks. On Oct. 31, Saipov allegedly rented a Home Depot truck in Passaic, New Jersey, drove to Manhattan, and left a trail of death and injury along the Hudson River bicycle path. Saipov was shot by a police officer after his truck hit a school bus. Investigators said Saipov wrote two notes pledging his loyalty to ISIS . Authorities said Saipov waived his Miranda rights while in custody at the hospital and admitted to carrying out the attack after being inspired by ISIS videos that he had watched on his phone. He allegedly planned the attack for Halloween in hopes of hitting more people, and intended to continue the attack on the Brooklyn bridge . Saipov was indicted in November on eight counts of murder, twelve counts of attempted murder, and supporting a terror group. He went on initially to plead not guilty at arraignment. NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Two NYPD officers stopped to help deliver a baby early Tuesday while they directed traffic in Hell’s Kitchen. As 1010 WINS’ Al Jones reported, the two NYPD officers had just started their day enforcing “do not block the box,” when an exception arose. “This is definitely at the top of the list of an experience I will never forget,” said Officer Tiffany Phillips. Phillips and her partner, Officer Carlos Guadalupe – both 12-year veterans – were flagged down by a man at Tenth Avenue and 41st Street. He and his wife were trying to get to Northwell Health Lenox Hill Hospital, but the baby was not waiting. “They were scared in the beginning,” Phillips said. “When the baby was born, the baby was not breathing, so I believe any parent would have been scared and frantic. But once the baby started breathing, things started to calm down a little bit.” One officer went to a hotel close by to get blankets. And the baby was not breathing at first, so they put him on his abdomen and gave him a few pats, and he started coughing and breathing. The mother and her son were taken to NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue and were said to be doing fine.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Now that the holiday spending season is over, credit card bills are coming in the mail. Experts warn that interest rates are rising, so it’s the perfect time to pare down your debt. Inside the Mineola Luncheonette, most are avoiding the use of credit cards after getting the latest news. The Federal Reserve raised rates three times in 2017 and is likely to do a repeat in 2018. In the near-term, higher interest rates will have an immediate effect on consumers with credit card debt, home equity lines of credit, and those carrying adjustable rate mortgages. CPA Eliot Lebenhart says what goes up can go up even further. “When interest rates go up you get more money on your money market accounts and bank accounts,” he said. “You should shop that, because some banks are more competitive with interest rates. The negative is that people who are in the stock market with interest rate-sensitive stocks may find their stocks will go down.” Short term rates will go up, so certificates of deposit and annuities will have higher payouts by year’s end. The downside? Lenders are likely to charge more for loans. Long story short, it’s time to start whittling away your debt. Some suggest comparison shopping for the best loan and deposit rates, not only on new borrowing and saving but also existing loans which can be refinanced and credit cards which can be consolidated.

Experts Say Now’s The Time To Pare Down Your Debt
By Sean Hartnett » More Columns Following the completion of their five-day bye week, the Rangers will return to action on Saturday afternoon against a familiar foe in the rival Islanders. Although there are still 40 games left in the regular season, the ensuing weeks will define the Blueshirts’ thinking as the Feb. 26 trade deadline nears. For a team that has annually followed a win-now direction, this is the first season of the Henrik Lundqvist era in which the Rangers’ deadline stance is unclear. With every season that passes, Lundqvist edges closer to retirement. Once he exits the Madison Square Garden stage for good, his successor will be tasked with replacing the highest-performing goaltender this franchise has employed. MORE : Hartnett: Enigmatic Rangers Are No Lock To Make The Playoffs Even if 22-year-old Russian prospect Igor Shesterkin eventually rises as the heir to the throne, it would take a very rare goaltender to emulate the remarkable consistency and game-stealing heroics that have been synonymous with Lundqvist’s name. Rangers head coach Alain Vigneault watches from the bench during the first period against the Coyotes on Jan. 6, 2018 in Glendale, Arizona. (Photo by Christian Petersen/Getty Images) Lundqvist, who will turn 36 on March 2, is the midst of an exceptional season and was named to the Metropolitan Division All-Star roster on Wednesday . His .924 save percentage is four points above his career average and his .897 short-handed save percentage is the third-highest of his 13 NHL seasons. MORE : Hartnett: By The Numbers — Rangers Have Failed Lundqvist Forever There’s a shrinking number of opportunities left for the Blueshirts to take advantage of Lundqvist’s dominance, even if he extends his peak years into his late 30s. When he’s gone, he’s gone, and there will be no guarantee that his successor will come close to his brilliance. The enduring philosophy of win-now will be weighed against the merits of a wide-ranging rebuild. Would a one-year, possibly playoff-less tear-down and summer shakeup better position Lundqvist for future, legitimate runs at the Stanley Cup? Or do the Rangers press ahead with their usual modus operandi despite a worrying regularity of poor starts, bad puck management and territorial battle losses? If the Rangers do move forward in win-now mode, they’re going to need to fend off the hunting pack of division rivals looking to take advantage of any slip-up. As things currently stand, the Eastern Conference wild cards would come out of the Metropolitan Division. The Rangers, Carolina Hurricanes, Pittsburgh Penguins, Philadelphia Flyers and Islanders are vying for two spots and are only separated by three points. MORE : Capellini: There’s No Getting Around How Badly Islanders Have Failed Tavares Starting with the visiting Islanders on Saturday, the Rangers are going to need to create separation from their pursuers as they plot a course to the top of the division. That’s not going to be easy without the all-around play of unavailable left wing Chris Kreider. It was announced on Tuesday that Kreider underwent successful rib resection surgery and will be re-evaluated in six weeks. In addition to having to cope with Kreider’s absence, there are many other questions the Rangers will have to answer over the coming weeks — and they can start doing that with a statement win over the Isles. Can head coach Alain Vigneault find three stable defense pairings that can spark offense while eliminating the careless giveaways that often feed the opposition outnumbering the Blueshirts in transition? Will he be able to get captain Ryan McDonagh back to being an assured, all-around contributor? Will he trust difference-making sophomore Pavel Buchnevich with the top-six role his play deserves? The list goes on. Will key offseason signing Kevin Shattenkirk rediscover the form that has annually made him one of the league’s best offensive defensemen? Will Rick Nash’s awful shooting luck turn around? Will he become more of an offensive factor to rival his value on the defensive side of the puck? Forward Kevin Hayes has grown defensively, but his 0.4 points per game are the lowest of his career. He’s going to need to pick up the slack while Kreider is sidelined. Jimmy Vesey had a strong December (seven points in 13 games), but the Rangers need the 24-year-old to flex his goal-scoring ability on a more consistent basis. By the time January turns to February, the Rangers will likely have all of those answers. If this team is trending the wrong way, it might have no choice but to trade off parts for assets that can help it down the road. Follow Sean on Twitter at @HartnettHockey
