NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — A mother was killed and her six-year-old son was rushed to the hospital when a car crashed into a bus stop in Brooklyn late Tuesday. Investigators remained on scene several hours after police say two cars crashed, causing one of them to jump into where the woman and boy had been waiting for a bus near the corner of Remsen and Seaview Avenues in Canarsie. Witnesses tell CBS2 the victims were pinned to a fence. They blame both cars for speeding. “They use this block as a speedway,” Canarsie resident Michael Thomas said. “When that light turns green, from Avenue N to Seaview it’s like a raceway.” Police didn’t immediately release the mother’s name, but say she was 32-years-old. The boy is expected to survive. Investigators didn’t immediately file charges against either driver involved in the crash.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Cases of humans contracting Lyme disease from tick bites is on the rise, and so are a number of other diseases ticks carry. Experts say global warming has led to an explosion in the tick population so, it’s important to conduct a top-to-bottom tick check after spending time outdoors in the warmer weather. It’s not surprising these days to find one on you after hiking, camping, golf, or gardening. If you do notice one, don’t panic. It takes 24 to 48 hours for a tick to transmit Lyme, but you should pull gently to remove them immediately. “Don’t burn the ticks off, don’t bury them under fingernail polish, and don’t squeeze them. Try to take a tweezers and get close to the skin as you can, so you get close to where the little snout is and you remove them,” Dr. Alan Taege of the Cleveland Clinic, tells Dr. Max Gomez. It’s also important to look out for symptoms after discovering a tick. “You watch for fever, achieness or a rash. And for the Lyme infection it is typically called the bulls-eye, or the target rash, where it’s a circular rash and it isn’t usually a small thing,” Taege explains. As with all diseases, prevention is a better alternative to treatment. Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants and tuck them into your boots to keep the ticks from crawling onto your skin. Of course, use insect repellent. While DEET is the only ingredient that’s been proven effective, Dr. Taege says there’s a another way to get an extra layer of protection, “You can spray your clothing and some of your camping gear with another chemical compound called permethrin, which is not designed for the skin but can be put on clothing and fabric and such to help repel the ticks.” Permethrin doesn’t just repel ticks and other biting insects, it actually kills them. Better yet, its effects are said to last through multiple washings.

NEW YORK (AP) — Alex Cobb delivered his best performance since signing a rich contract with Baltimore late in spring training, helping the Orioles break a seven-game losing streak by beating the New York Mets 2-1 Tuesday night. The Orioles ended their longest skid of the season and sent the slumping Mets to their fifth loss in a row. New York has dropped seven straight at Citi Field. Cobb (2-7) gave up one run and two hits in six innings, striking out seven and walking one. The right-hander began the game with a 6.80 ERA, hardly what the Orioles envisioned when they gave the former Tampa Bay pitcher a $57 million, four-year deal. Cobb held the Mets hitless until Jay Bruce led off the fifth with a single. The Mets later ended a 21-inning scoreless string on pinch-hitter Jose Bautista’s sacrifice fly. Baltimore reliever Richard Bleier got Asdrubal Cabrera to ground into a double play with two on to end the eighth. Brad Brach worked the ninth for his ninth save in 10 chances, completing the combined three-hitter. The Mets have managed only seven runs in their last five games. Held to three hits in consecutive games, New York has lost 12 of 15 overall. The Orioles, with the worst record in the majors at 18-41, scored two quick runs against Jason Vargas (2-4). Trey Mancini, Adam Jones and Manny Machado opened the game with singles for a 1-0 lead, and Danny Valencia added a sacrifice fly. Baltimore catcher Austin Wynns made his major league debut and singled in his first at-bat. AND HE’S OFF … Bob Baffert, trainer of Triple Crown hopeful Justify, threw out the first ball. Wearing a Mets jersey, he made a high toss home. The draw for post positions for Saturday’s Belmont Stakes was held hours earlier at Citi Field. TRAINER’S ROOM Orioles: RHP Darren O’Day (elbow) walked three while getting just two outs for Class A Frederick in his first rehab appearance. There was a chance he could be activated this weekend. Mets: RHP Noah Syndergaard (strained ligament, right index finger) threw a simulated game from the mound. If he’s OK, he could start Sunday night at home against the Yankees. Yoenis Cespedes (hip flexor) was one of the hitters Syndergaard faced. … 3B Todd Frazier (hamstring) and RHP Anthony Swarzak (oblique) were activated from the disabled list. Frazier, who’d been out since May 8, batted cleanup and went 0 for 4. Swarzak worked a hitless ninth in his first game since March 31. UP NEXT Orioles: RHP Dylan Bundy (3-7, 4.46 ERA) has struck out 20 with one walk in his last two starts, a win over the White Sox and a loss to Washington. Mets: RHP Zack Wheeler (2-4, 5.14) is 3-4 with a 6.26 ERA in 11 interleague starts. He will face the O’s for the first time. (© Copyright 2018 The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved. WASHINGTON (CBSNewYork) – Below is the transcript for President Donald Trump’s weekly address: Senate Democrats call it “the resistance” – they’re resisting the will of the American Voter and it is not good. From day one, Senate Democrats have shamelessly obstructed, stalled, and filibustered the confirmations of hundreds of talented men and women who are eager to come to Washington, D.C. to make a difference. They want to serve our country. My nominees face a longer average confirmation wait than any in the history of our country. Today, more than 300 of our nominees are still awaiting a vote. Last June, I nominated Isabel Patelunas to serve as Assistant Secretary of the Treasury for Intelligence and Analysis. Now, almost a year later, this tremendously qualified professional with nearly three decades of intelligence experience is still awaiting confirmation. She’s given up so much. She’s left areas. She’s moved from homes and she’s still not confirmed. It’s a disgrace. Democrats in Congress are also blocking urgently needed improvements to our border security. They don’t want border security for two reasons. Number one, they don’t care about it. Number two, they are afraid it’s going to make me and the republicans look good and they don’t want that. That comes before our country. They have blocked every effort to close deadly loopholes, to keep out vicious criminals, and to stop the flow of illegal immigrants and drugs. They are a disaster at the border. These actions are endangering our citizens, threatening our communities, and undermining our national security. It is time for Senate Democrats to stop resisting the will of the American People. So very simply, stop resisting the will of the American People and to start working across the aisle to deliver for all citizens. We love our country; we want to keep our country great. Thank you very much.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — It’s finally here! Memorial Day Weekend marks the unofficial star of summer, and many folks are heading to Tri-State beaches to take advantage of the warmer weather. “After the rugged winter we had and almost spring, it’s nice to take advantage of it,” Gravesend resident Mark Sarasohn said. READ: Four Teens Rescued From Riptide At Long Beach As Memorial Day Weekend Starts With city beaches officially opening Saturday, experts say it’s important to remember that safety should never take a holiday. “Top of my list is that supervision is key to prevent drowning,” Dr. Rebekka Levis from Boston Children’s Health Physicians said. “Parents should really not rely on solely the lifeguard, but should also be supervising their children at the pool.” Dr. Levis says swimmies and floaties don’t take the place of that supervision. The Friday rescue of young teens in the water off Long Beach is a reminder that even older kids need to be watched. “All of a sudden we got a call that four people were sucked out by the rocks on Riverside,” Long Beach Police Chief Paul Gillespie said. The teens had to be rescued from a riptide after officials say they were swimming dangerously close to the rocks. Even though lifeguards will be out on Saturday, experts say it’s best to not take any chances. On Atlantic coast beaches, rip currents are always a risk. If you’re caught in one, it’s important to not try to fight your way out of it. “You should teach children to swim parallel to the shore until they get out of the rip current and then towards the shore. And don’t panic! That is key,” Dr. Levis said. Lifeguards will be on duty between 10 am and 6 pm. Swimming is prohibited outside of that time frame.

Beachgoers Rejoice As Memorial Day Weekend Kicks Off Summer Season
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – After fighting for years to prevent the release of his private email exchanges with political consultants, Mayor Bill de Blasio has relented. A court recently ordered the emails to be released , and his administration complied Thursday, dropping thousands of pages of emails. On a sunny August day in 2015, the New York Mets beat the Boston Red Sox, like a dagger to the heart of die-hard Sox fan de Blasio. He was sitting in the cheap seats in an elaborately orchestrated plan to make him appear authentic and relatable, CBS2’s Political Reporter Marcia Kramer reported. The meticulous plan was revealed for the very first time in a jealously guarded cache of emails after a court ruled the mayor could not prevent the public release of communications with political consultants and advisers. In an August 27 email, de Blasio said, “Chirlane, Chiara will go to the Mets/Red Sox game Friday night – in very cheap seats… I will go the Sat game with queens bp (Borough President) Melinda Katz. I will go to the Sunday game with Queens councilmembers.” Outside consultant Jonathan Rosen, of BerlinRosen, sometimes referred to as “Jro” in the emails, weighed in on August 28 with a political “tweak.” “Can we also frame this as how BdB (Bill de Blasio) does his politics. Some pols do dinners and drinks… but he’s working the Queens delegation and the BP over Mets games. It’s work – him doing politics well,” he wrote. There was a February 1, 2014 exchange about whether his wife Chirlane should give a speech in the middle of an impending snowstorm, when the administration was “telling everyone… to stay off the roads.” As Kramer reported, there were also many, many attempts to control the media — even her. On June 3, 2015, the mayor told his media team, “We should try something different with Marcia, because whatever we’re doing isn’t working.” After then-press secretary Karen Hinton and Kramer had a confrontation about transparency , there was a lengthy email exchange about what to do if she followed the mayor to Puerto Rico the next day to demand answers, which she did. “Given that Marcia is like to be in PR, I think he should avoid confrontation with her,” Hinton advised, adding in a later exchange the goal was to “tamp down on any ‘mayor isn’t transparent’ criticism.” The emails also showed the mayor waffled over whether to comfort the FDNY or hit the gym after a fire lieutenant was shot during a crazed gunman’s standoff with the NYPD, Kramer reported. The mayor went to the gym, then got to the lieutenant’s bedside six hours after he was shot. More emails are expected to be released.
