LOS ANGELES (AP) Former NHL goaltender Ray Emery has drowned in his hometown of Hamilton, Ontario. He was 35. Hamilton Police said Emery was identified as the victim of the swimming accident Sunday morning. Staff sergeant Paul Evans said police received a call just after 6 a.m. that an adult swimmer did not surface and that the Niagara Police assisted in the recovery effort. Emery’s body was recovered just before 3 p.m. Sunday. Hamilton Police said a cause of death would be confirmed after a post-mortem. Nicknamed “Razor” for his aggressive style, Emery played parts of 11 seasons with the Ottawa Senators, Philadelphia Flyers, Chicago Blackhawks and Anaheim Ducks from 2003-2015. He helped the Senators reach the Stanley Cup Final in 2007 and won it as a backup with the Blackhawks in 2013. Our hearts go out to the family and friends of Ray Emery, our former goaltender, who passed away early this morning. pic.twitter.com/QmZJpd7hcM — Anaheim Ducks (@AnaheimDucks) July 15, 2018 Emery battled avascular necrosis, the same serious hip ailment that ended two-sport star Bo Jackson’s career and came back to play. He and fellow Blackhawks netminder Corey Crawford combined to win the William Jennings Trophy for allowing the league’s fewest goals during the lockout-shortened 2013 season and finished seventh in Vezina Trophy voting. Throughout his career, Emery dealt with off-ice problems, including an incident of road rage, assault of a trainer in Russia and behavior that led to him being sent home from Ottawa’s training camp. “Ray’s smile and intelligence made him a magnetic personality,” said Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Kyle Dubas, who knew Emery from junior hockey and the goalie’s stint with the American Hockey League’s Marlies. “You always rooted for him to reach his vast potential even as he went through the many ups and downs of his playing career.” Condolences poured out from the hockey community on Sunday after word of Emery’s death spread. Dan Carcillo wrote on Twitter he was crushed, adding: “You will be missed deeply Ray. I love you man.” “Ray was a great teammate and an even better friend,” Flyers captain Claude Giroux wrote . “Rest in peace Razor. I’ll miss you man.” Former teammates lauded Emery’s mentorship and leadership, especially in his final professional season in the AHL in 2015-16. Enforcer-turned-analyst Paul Bissonnette, a teammate with the AHL’s Ontario Reign, said Emery would treat other players to dinner almost every night. “I’d heard nothing but great things before meeting him and it was true,” Bissonnette said. “He was awesome. Great in the locker room and just made life enjoyable.” (© Copyright 2018 The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed.)

MOSCOW (CBS News/AP) — Kylian Mbappe and France put on a thrilling show in winning the World Cup title. All Russian President Vladimir Putin might remember is the Pussy Riot protest. The 19-year-old Mbappe became only the second teenager after Pele to score in a World Cup final, helping France beat Croatia 4-2 on Sunday. Mbappe had just shown his electrifying speed in the 52nd minute when play was held up by four protesters. About 12 minutes after play resumed, Mbappe sent a right-footed shot past Croatia goalkeeper Danijel Subasic. But it was Mbappe and Pogba who put the match out of reach with a furious passage of play interrupted by a four-person field invasion by Pussy Riot – watched from the VIP seats by Putin, whose government once jailed members of the activist group. Griezmann scored from the penalty in the 38th minute after a video review. About four minutes after his corner kick was knocked out, the referee ruled Ivan Perisic had handled the ball on the way. France took the lead in the 18th when Croatia’s tallest outfield player, 1.90-meter (6-foot-3) forward Mario Mandzukic, rose to meet Griezmann’s free kick with the top of his head. He inadvertently sent it past his own goalkeeper. Mario Mandzukic scored a goal for the Croatians in the 69th, thanks to a mental error by French goaltender Hugo Lloris. Mbappe, who plays for Paris Saint-Germain in the French league, was born months after France first won its only other World Cup title in 1998. Putin was later on the field during a downpour to award medals to the players. FIFA president Gianni Infantino then handed France captain Hugo Lloris the World Cup trophy. Earlier, four pitch invaders disrupted the game in the 52nd minute for about a minute before being dragged away by security and police. Punk rock group Pussy Riot quickly claimed responsibility for the pitch invasion via social media, saying it was a protest aimed at ending illegal arrests of protesters and to allow political competition in Russia. The four people who charged onto the field in the 52nd minute simultaneously in what appeared to be old-fashioned police uniforms were tackled to the ground by stewards, but not before one shared a high five with a French player in the center circle. Pussy Riot rose to global prominence with their daring outdoor performances critical of Russia President Vladimir Putin. FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — Chris Pontius scored twice, including the go-ahead goal in the 93rd minute, and the 10-man the Los Angeles Galaxy rallied with two stoppage-time goals to beat the 10-man New England Revolution 3-2 on Saturday night. Dave Romney made it 2-all for the Galaxy (8-7-4) with a header to finish Romain Alessandrini’s corner in the 92nd minute. The Revolution (7-5-7) spent most of the game down a man, but took a 2-1 lead on Luis Caicedo’s goal late in the first half and held that edge until the Galaxy’s late outburst. The Revs’ Cristian Penilla was sent off in the 23rd minute for kicking back at Alessandrini after getting knocked to the ground. Diego Fagundez opened the scoring five minutes later for New England and Pontius scored his first goal in the 38th minute for LA. Ashley Cole was shown his second yellow card in the 85th minute and was sent off for the Galaxy. The Galaxy’s star striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic was held out to rest. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Kole Calhoun homered on his first pitch from All-Star closer Kenley Jansen in the 10th inning, lifting the Los Angeles Angels to a 5-4 victory over the Dodgers on Saturday night after the Angels blew two leads in the Freeway Series. Four of the Angels’ five games against the Dodgers this season have been decided by one run. The Angels lead the season series 3-2. Angels manager Mike Scioscia equaled fellow catcher-turned-manager Ralph Houk for 18th on the career victories list with his 1,619th. Calhoun’s ninth homer went over the right-field wall with two outs against Jansen (0-3). The Angels led 3-0 in the second and 4-3 in the seventh before the Dodgers rallied twice to tie the game. The Dodgers put the potential tying run on in the bottom of the 10th when Andrew Toles doubled to deep left. Justin Upton collided with the wall trying to make the catch and the trainer came out to check on him, although he stayed in the game. Toles took third on a passed ball by but pinch-hitter Chase Utley flied out to center and Yasmani Grandal struck out swinging against Jose Alvarez (4-3) to end the game. The Dodgers tied it 4-all in the ninth. Grandal doubled to deep left off Blake Parker. Upton chased the ball to the wall, allowing Utley to score from first on a one-legged slide that narrowly beat the throw to the plate. The Dodgers went on to load the bases, but pinch-hitter Joc Pederson flied out to center to send the game to the 10th. Upton hit a go-ahead, two-out homer, his 19th, in the seventh to put the Angels back in front 4-3. He went 2 for 4 with two strikeouts and a walk, drove in two other runs and scored a run. Angels All-Star Mike Trout was limited to a single in four at-bats with a walk and a strikeout. The Dodgers had threatened in the eighth when they got the potential tying and go-ahead runs on. All-Star Matt Kemp singled leading off and took second on Parker’s wild pitch. After striking out Max Muncy, Parker walked Pederson and struck out Cody Bellinger. Toles flied out to left-center, although Upton and Trout nearly collided before Upton made the catch. Chris Taylor tied the game 3-all in the fifth with a leadoff homer, giving the Dodgers 127 home runs, which leads the National League. They are two shy of tying the team record for most homers before the All-Star break set in 2000. The Dodgers trailed 3-2 in the second. Bellinger had an RBI single and Angels starter Andrew Heaney hit Taylor with the bases loaded. The Angels led 3-0 on Upton’s RBI single in the first and a pair of runs in the second. David Fletcher had a sacrifice fly and Upton drew a bases-loaded, two-out walk that scored Heaney, who reached on an infield single to first. Heaney gave up three runs — two earned — and six hits in 6 1/3 innings. The left-hander struck out six and walked one. Dodgers starter Alex Wood allowed three runs and seven hits in six innings of his team-high 19th start. The left-hander struck out six and walked two. After two messy innings, Wood settled down to retire 12 of his final 14 batters. TRAINER’S ROOM Dodgers: 3B Justin Turner (strained right adductor) remains day-to-day although he was available to pinch-hit. With the All-Star break, he is unlikely to need to go on the DL. … RHP Pedro Baez (right biceps tendinitis) is expected to be the first reliever back after the break, followed by LHP Tony Cingrani (left shoulder strain) and RHP Josh Fields (right shoulder inflammation). … LHP Julio Urias (left shoulder surgery rehab) has thrown two simulated games and is being pointed toward a starting spot. UP NEXT The Angels have not announced a starter for Sunday’s series finale. Clayton Kershaw (3-4, 2.61) makes his fifth start since coming off the disabled list for the Dodgers. He is 2-0 with a 2.25 ERA in the four starts since his return. The left-hander has 17 strikeouts and two walks in 20 innings since June 23. (@Copyright 2018. The Associated Press.
