TOMICH Scotland (CBS News) – No fewer than 361 golden retrievers gathered on the estate of the 19th century aristocrat Lord Tweedmouth to celebrate the breed’s 150th anniversary. His Lordship, the story goes, was in need of a hunting dog who could master both the rugged, rocky terrain and the soggy, boggy marshes of the Scottish Highlands. To that end he crossed a wavy-coated retriever with a tweed-water spaniel to create the forerunner of the golden retriever – equally at home on both land and water. Today, of course, the golden retriever is beloved on both sides of the Atlantic. In fact, it’s now the third most popular breed in the United States, behind Labrador retrievers and the German shepherd. (© 2018 CBS Interactive Inc. All Rights Reserved.)

PALMETTO, Fla. (CBS Local) – A Florida police chief has been ordered to go through sexual harassment training after an investigation into comments he made about a female officer’s body. According to WKMG , Palmetto Police Chief Scott Tyler and other officers were punished following a city review into several comments made towards a female reserve officer. A female detective complained after the reserve officer was reportedly told by Chief Tyler that her “puffy nipples” could be seen through her shirt. Chief Tyler denies making the comment and claims he actually defended the reserve officer against comments allegedly made by her fellow officers, who took issue with the way she was dressed. The female officer who brought the complaint to the Palmetto mayor’s office is also the subject of an investigation of her own. Detective Chris Cavazos is being investigated for allegedly “being the aggressor in a domestic violence incident involving her husband,” according to the Bradenton Herald . “We want to do what’s necessary to move past this,” Chief Tyler added.

BRANSON, Mo. (CBSNewYork/AP) — The duck boat that capsized and sank last week on a sightseeing cruise was raised from a Missouri lake Monday, more than three days after the accident that killed 17 people near the tourist town of Branson. The boat , which was submerged in 80 feet of water, went down Thursday evening after a sudden thunderstorm generated near-hurricane strength winds. Divers attached a sling to the boat, then raised the vessel. Once it was brought to the surface, it was drained, Coast Guard Capt. Scott Stoermer told reporters. The vessel will be loaded onto a vehicle and transported to a facility where the National Transportation Safety Board will take custody of it, Stoermer said. Nine of the people who died belonged to one Indiana family. Others killed came from Missouri, Arkansas and Illinois. Divers already have recovered a video-recording device that was aboard the boat, although it’s unclear whether it was working when the boat capsized or whether any data can be retrieved. The recorder is headed to the National Transportation Safety Board lab in Washington, D.C. Keith Holloway, an NTSB spokesman, said it was unclear what the recorder captured, including whether it recorded audio. The NTSB also wants to know what the captain knew about the forecasted weather and when he knew it. “The real objective is going to be to find out what kind of information they had on board when they made the decision to go out,” said Dr. Earl Weener with the NTSB. Steve Paul, owner of the Test Drive Technologies inspection service in the St. Louis area, has said he issued a written report in August 2017 for Ripley Entertainment, which owns Ride the Ducks in Branson, after inspecting two dozen boats. In the report, he explained why the vessels’ engines — and pumps that remove water from their hulls — might fail in inclement weather. Paul said he won’t know if the boat that sank is one that he inspected until it has been recovered from the lake. Ripley Entertainment, which owns Ride the Ducks in Branson, hasn’t responded to questions about Paul’s concerns. Suzanne Smagala with Ripley Entertainment, said the company is assisting authorities with the rescue effort and that the accident last week was the company’s first in more than 40 years of operation in Branson. The Missouri attorney general says there state highway patrol is also investigating to see if there was any criminal negligence, but so far no charges have been filed. NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) — The New York tabloid Daily News will cut half of its newsroom staff, saying it wants to focus more on digital news. The paper was sold to tronc Inc. last year for $1, with the owner of the Chicago Tribune assuming liabilities and debt. In an email sent to staff Monday, tronc said staff at the Daily News will focus on breaking news involving “crime, civil justice and public responsibility.” Revenue and print circulation have been sliding at the newspaper for years, even as it provided critical coverage of health issues in public housing and for first responders after the Sept. 11 attacks. Revenue slid 22 percent between 2014 and 2016, and the paper had already been letting people go. “Since the year began, we’ve worked hard to transform the New York Daily News into a truly digitally-focused enterprise – one that creates meaningful journalism, delivers it more quickly and more frequently, and develops new approaches to engage our readers,” an email sent to staff said. “We’ve gained a deeper understanding of our readership. We’ve redefined our structures. But we have not gone far enough.” Editor-in-chief Jim Rich and Managing Editor Kristen Lee are both included in the layoffs. Local leaders took to social media to speak out about the newspaper cuts. “It’s no secret that I’ve disagreed with the Daily News from time to time,” posted Mayor Bill de Blasio. “But Tronc’s greedy decision to gut the newsroom is bad for government and a disaster for NYC. Tronc should sell the paper to someone committed to local journalism and keeping reporters on the beat.” It’s no secret that I’ve disagreed with the Daily News from time to time. Andrew Cuomo urged tronc to reconsider their business decision, noting the state was given no warning about the move. “My father, as Governor, came to the aid of the New York Post when it was facing difficult financial times,” posted Cuomo. “Even though the Post represented an opposing active partisan interest, my father understood the value of a robust free press. So do I.” My statement on the layoffs at the @NYDailyNews : pic.twitter.com/R1FflH98DX — Andrew Cuomo (@NYGovCuomo) July 23, 2018 Robert York, editor of tronc-owned The Morning Call in Allentown, Pennsylvania, will take over as editor of The Daily News. tronc Inc., based in Chicago, owns the Chicago Tribune, The Baltimore Sun, the Orlando Sentinel, and other media operations. By Justin Lewis, CBS2 Meteorologist/Weather Producer The story doesn’t change much this afternoon as we’re anticipating scattered showers and isolated storms across the area. Even if you’re spared by the rains, you’re stuck with that breezy, tropical air out there. (Credit: CBS2) Some showers will be felt tonight, but the overall flooding risk will remain low. It will still be muggy out there, too, with temps only falling into the mid 70s. (Credit: CBS2) We’re in for another round of scattered showers and storms tomorrow with the focus more so inland. It will remain sticky and breezy with highs in the low 80s. (Credit: CBS2) Then Wednesday through Wednesday night we’ll see more widespread showers and thunderstorms. This, of course, translates to potentially more flooding around the area. As always, there will be more details to come, so stay tuned!

Ryan Mayer Training camp gets underway this week for most of the NFL, which means we’re just about a month and a half away from our first football action of the 2018-19 season. After a wild 2017-18 season ended with the Philadelphia Eagles atop the pile as Super Bowl champions, it’s time to gear up for the season by checking in with teams across the country. We reached out to four CBS Local TV sports anchors to get their thoughts on their local team’s chances heading into a new year of football. First up, we headed to Philadelphia, to ask CBS3’s Don Bell for his thoughts on the biggest question that the defending champions face as they get set to attempt to continue their reign. “The health of Carson Wentz,” said Bell. “Last year, he was the MVP of the league when he tore his knee in L.A. against the Rams. What is his health? Will he be ready for Opening Night? That is a big question mark facing the Eagles. If he’s ready to roll, watch out.” What about the Birds’ opponents from Super Bowl LII? Well, WBZ-TV sports anchor Steve Burton told us that the supporting cast on offense around quarterback Tom Brady is the biggest question mark. “Who is Tom Brady going to throw to in the receiving corps,” said Burton. “We all know who the tight end is, in Rob Gronkowski. But, now that Danny Amendola is gone, Julian Edelman is going to miss the first four games of the season, no Brandin Cooks, who is Brady’s go-to guy?” Despite those questions surrounding last season’s Super Bowl participants, the expectations for those teams remain the same: make it back to the Super Bowl. But the rest of the league will probably have something to say about that, particularly in Minnesota, where the Vikings are hoping for another shot at the Eagles after last year’s conference championship game loss. “This team is coming off a 13-3 year. They had the number-one rated defense in the NFL, averaging just 15 points per game given up last year, so the ceiling is extremely high for this team.” said WCCO-TV sports anchor Mike Rosen. “They’ve been building towards this and they fell short last year, obviously, but they feel they are Super Bowl-worthy right now.” Outside of Minnesota, there’s a team in the Eagles own division that is looking to knock the champs off their throne, as the Dallas Cowboys look to rebound from a disappointing 2017 campaign. “Now chasing the Super Bowl champ Eagles in their own division, no one is picking the Cowboys to even win the NFC East much less do anything in the postseason,” said CBS 11 sports anchor Bill Jones. “But I wouldn’t be surprised if the Cowboys surprised the preseason prognosticators this year. I’m picking a 10-6 season for the Cowboys this year.” For more of the guys’ thoughts on their team’s outlook at the start of training camp, check out the video above.

MISSION VIEJO (CBSLA) — An investigation has been launched Monday after a 1-year-old boy drowned at a recreation and fitness center in Mission Viejo. Paramedics were called to the Sierra Recreation and Fitness Center, 26887 Recodo Lane, at about 6 p.m. Sunday. The child was taken to a hospital, where the baby was pronounced dead. Authorities say the parents of the infant were on hand, as were friends, and lifeguards were on duty at the time of the drowning. The center remained closed Monday morning, and people coming to exercise were shocked to hear the news. Joan Zerg was one of the residents who had come early to the center to swim, and said she was devastated for the mother of the child. “No matter how much of an accident it was, she will never get over it,” Zerg said. So far this year there have been 18 drownings and 17 near-drownings at pools in Orange County, the Orange County Fire Authority said. Of those 35 cases, 15 involved children up to 4 years old, and in five of those cases, the victims died. (© Copyright 2018 CBS Broadcasting Inc. All Rights Reserved.
