NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Police say while the medical examiner does not yet have a clear cause of death, a murder investigation is underway after the body of nurse was found stuffed in the closet of her East Flatbush apartment and her two roommates vanished. The 58-year-old victim, identified as Kyimar Thein, was found wrapped in a blanket around 6:45 a.m. Saturday at her building on Lenox Road near Nostrand Avenue in Brooklyn after police performed a welfare check. It was unclear how long she had been dead. Police said she had sublet a room to a man and a woman who have not been seen in the area since the body was discovered. Authorities say they have the identities of the couple and are searching for them. Thein joined SUNY Downstate Medical Center in 2006 as a nurse in the Medical-Surgical/Telemetry Unit, mostly working the night shift, according to Dawn S. Walker, Associate Vice President of Communications & Marketing. When Thein didn’t show up for her shifts over a few days, friends became concerned. Two coworkers told CBS2 Thein’s sublet was to a younger employee who was staying with her and that employee’s boyfriend.

(CBS Local) — If you had the opportunity, would you like to work a four-day work week? A new study involving workers in New Zealand shows a four-day work week increased employee productivity. Supervisors said their staff were more creative, they were on time and had better attendance, and they didn’t leave early or take long breaks. Employers said they came back more energized after their days off. Workers reported an improvement in work-life balance by nearly a quarter.

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — Los Angeles Unified School District board member Ref Rodriguez resigned Monday after pleading guilty to a felony conspiracy charge and four misdemeanors for reimbursing donors to his 2015 election campaign. Under the plea agreement with prosecutors, Rodriguez will be put on three years probation and requires him to serve 60 days of community service. He is also expected to reach a settlement with the city Ethics commission, admitting that he carried out a money-laundering scheme by reimbursing 25 people who donated money to his campaign. “I am sorry for the mistakes I have made,” Rodriguez said in a statement. According to prosecutors, Rodriguez raised more than $50,000 during a campaign reporting period that ended in December 2014 and 25 donors – most of whom were family members and friends – were allegedly paid back $24,250 by Rodriguez and his cousin, Elizabeth Melendrez. The donors’ names had been listed on a campaign finance report that was signed by Rodriguez under the penalty of perjury and submitted to the Los Angeles City Ethics Commission. Rodriguez would have been allowed by law to donate the money to his own campaign directly, but the scheme could have been an effort to make his financial support from donors look stronger than it really was. According to Ethics Commission documents, shortly after Rodriguez began his campaign for the school board seat in November 2014, he “provided $26,000 of his own money to Melendrez, his cousin and a key campaign volunteer, with instructions to funnel that money into his campaign account by asking family members to make contributions.” Melendrez pleaded guilty Monday to four misdemeanor counts of assumed-name contributions and was also sentenced to three years probation and 60 days community service. Rodriguez pleaded guilty to a felony conspiracy charge and four misdemeanor counts of assumed-name contributions. He also resigned from the LAUSD board. “Today, I resign from the L.A. Unified Board to resume my role as a private citizen and community advocate. Thank you to the parents, students, community members, my staff and everyone who has given me their unwavering support. I am sorry for the mistakes I have made. I wish all of my colleagues the best as they continue this critical work.” The city Ethics Commission will hold a special meeting late Monday morning to consider a settlement of campaign violation allegations against Rodriguez. According to commission documents, he will admit that he carried out a money laundering scheme during his 2015 campaign and will agree to pay a $100,000 fine. (© Copyright 2018 CBS Broadcasting Inc. LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — San Diego is one of the five best big cities to call home, says a new study that places it well ahead of its Southern California neighbors. WalletHub’s annual list ranked San Diego as the fifth-best major metropolis to live in, behind No. 1 Seattle and runners-up Virginia Beach, Austin and San Francisco. The survey’s methodology gave San Diego high scores for education and health, quality of life and safety, although it placed 51st out of 62 in affordability. Riverside topped all other Southern California cities at a middling No. 34, ranking high on the list of local economies but landing in the bottom five when it comes to quality of life, which incorporates everything from average commute time to the number of movie theaters per capita. Los Angeles took the No. 36 spot, weighed down by its second-to-last ranking in overall affordability, beating only New York City, and placing dead last in housing affordability. Anaheim (No. 38), Long Beach (No. 43) and Santa Ana (No. 53) also got poor marks for affordability, ranking in the bottom ten. L.A. did tie for first in one very important category: most coffee shops per capita. Read the full list here.

MIAMI, Fla. (CBS Local) – Several Uber customers are warning their fellow passengers to check their bill after their next ride. Customers of the ride hailing service in Florida told the Miami Herald they had been falsely charged for cleaning fees of messes they never made. Drivers are being accused of “vomit fraud,” as many of the Uber drivers allegedly claim their passengers threw up in the car after being picked up from a night of partying. “It was a total fraud by two different drivers. They have everything planned for the fraud,” Miami resident William Kennedy told the Herald . Kennedy told reporters he was overcharged twice in the same night, after both drivers added $150 charges to his bill. Both Uber drivers, who each took Kennedy on a $20 ride, claimed he vomited in the two vehicles. The Miami man says it took “numerous emails” to Uber to get them to refund the $300. “I immediately contacted Uber through the app. I told them that I was alone, sober, that I was not carrying any drinks and that it was impossible for me to have caused that damage,” Andrea Pérez also said to the Herald’s Spanish language reporters. “But every new email from Uber came from a different representative and always favored the driver.” Uber had emailed Pérez a bill with a $98 cleanup charge and a photo of vomit on the seat of the SUV she had used. However, Uber reportedly never refunded the Miami woman’s money and instead her credit card company intervened to return her $98. “They’ve been doing it for a long time,” an anonymous Uber driver admitted to reporters. “Many people don’t review their emails or credit card statements, so the drivers wind up pocketing the $80 or $150.” “My advice for other people would be to take a video when you get out of your Uber,” passenger Crystal Drake told CBS Miami in 2017 after being charged $150 for another fictitious mess. “With 15 million trips a day, Uber is unfortunately not immune to these types of incidents,” Uber officials said while claiming that the “vast majority” of cleaning charges were legitimate.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – In the previous episode of The Dig, Italian-born restaurateur Beatrice Tosti took CBS2’s Elle McLogan on a culinary tour of the Bronx’s Little Italy. In this episode, Elle joins Beatrice in the kitchen at her restaurant Il Posto Accanto , where the ingredients they bought are transformed into the day’s menu. Among the recipes Beatrice prepares are her old-school tomato sauce, rigatoni with oxtail ragu, and coffee granita: Sugo Di Pomodoro (Beatrice’s Old-School Tomato Sauce) Ingredients: 1 28-oz. can tomatoes 1 large carrot, cut into two-inch chunks 1 medium onion, quartered and halved 1 celery stalk, cut into two-inch pieces A handful of basil Sea salt, to taste Black pepper, to taste 1/2-cup good extra virgin olive oil Preparation: Heat the oil over a medium flame in a four-quart saucepan. Add half the basil (and be careful—it will pop and crackle). Add your veggies and a generous pinch of salt. Let the vegetables cook, without stirring, for 4 minutes, allowing them to stick a bit to the pot and caramelize. This is your base, and you want it bursting with flavor. Let it cook until it smells divine and the onions are starting to become translucent. Add the tomatoes, and stir. Bring the mixture to a boil. Reduce the heat to a content bubbling. Stir to prevent the sauce from sticking to the bottom of the pot. When the tomatoes at the outer edge of the pot begin to turn an orange hue, add the rest of your basil. When you can cut a piece of carrot with your wooden spoon, your sauce is ready. Taste for seasoning and adjust. Put an immersion blender in that deliciousness, and let it go until everything is nice and saucy. I use a food mill. Rigatoni Con Sugo Di Coda (Beatrice’s Rigatoni With Oxtail Ragu) Ingredients: 4 lbs. oxtail 1 28-oz. can tomatoes 1 large carrot, chopped 2 medium onions, chopped 3 stalks celery plus the white celery heart, chopped 1/2 bunch Italian parsley, chopped 3 cloves garlic, peeled and chopped 1 glass white wine Sea salt, to taste Black pepper, to taste 1 lb. rigatoni Pecorino Romano, grated 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil (and you might need some more) Preparation: Pour oil in a large, heavy saucepan over medium heat. Add your chopped veggies, and cook 8 minutes. Pat dry and season the oxtail on both sides with salt and pepper. Add it to the veggies and let it color on all sides. Add wine and reduce. Once the wine has evaporated, add the tomatoes and 1 cup water. The oxtails should be covered generously by the liquid. Add salt and black pepper if you think it really needs it, but wait until the end of cooking to adjust. Cook over super low heat for 4 to 5 hours, until the meat falls off the bones. Taste for seasoning, and adjust if necessary. Either remove the meat, strain the sauce, pick the meat from the bones, and reunite them in the pot, or just pick the meat off and add it to the sauce without straining. Cook rigatoni extra al dente in salted roaring boiling water. Place a good amount of your sauce in a sauté pan, and warm it up. Add rigatoni to finish cooking in the sauce, adding pasta cooking water and letting it evaporate as it cooks. Serve with a generous amount of grated Pecorino Romano. You can freeze the extra sauce, if you have any. Granita Di Caffè Con Panna (Beatrice’s Coffee Granita) Ingredients: 1 quart sweet real espresso (It needs to be really sweet—sweeter than you can tolerate drinking) 1 cup heavy whipping cream, plus extra (I always need more) 1 tablespoon sugar Preparation: Pour the espresso into a shallow glass or metal dish. Once it’s cooled, place it in your freezer. You need a thin layer of espresso—about 1 inch. Once the espresso is frozen, use a fork as an icepick to turn the slab of ice into a frozen slushy. But do not let it melt. Place it back in the freezer until you’re ready to serve it. Whip your cream with a stand mixer or hand mixer. When it begins to thicken, add your sugar. You want stiff peaks, but you don’t want to over-whip your cream into butter. In your serving dish (I like serving in clear glasses), place some of your whipped cream— two horizontal fingers’ worth. Add the flaked espresso. Finish with more whipped cream. Decorate with a cookie, if you like.
