NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — To the displeasure of straphangers across all five boroughs, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority on Wednesday announced plans to increase fares twice over the next three years. Riders who’ve had it with bad service say they’re not happy about the Wednesday bombshell. “As we stated in November and February, the MTA requires new revenue for operations and for capital,” MTA Chief Financial Officer Robert Foran said. Translation? Despite the delays, the breakdowns, and the frustrations, fares are going up for subways, commuter lines, and buses. Riders across the board weren’t happy about it. “I think it’s absurd,” one straphanger told CBS2. “It’s not like we’re seeing an improvement in service.” “As a student I think it’s really challenging,” one woman said. The MTA announced it will raise fares by four percent in both 2019 and 2021. As for specific details, those may take a while. “Those are forecasted, they’re still subjected to our needs,” Foran said. “They’re subject to our public hearings and subject to board action. We’ve increased saving targets, we just have to cut more cost.” But what about the delays, or the constantly crammed subway cars, and the so-called “incidents” that could make you hours late for work? The MTA says they’re working on it. “The figure I plugged in is not particularly scientific at the moment,” Transit Authority President Andy Byford said. “I just said at the moment we’re around 70,000 delay incidents a month and that’s far too high.” In response, Byford says he’s proposed a target of 10,000 “incidents” by the end of 2018. The one thing the MTA has been consistent with all along is fare hikes. The newest round of raises will bring the total number to seven since 2009, part of the plan to raise fares every two years as part of a financial rescue. Riders say they’re just not buying it. “The fares increase, but the service just stays the same or gets worse,” one man said. MTA Chair Joe Lhota says the state of emergency remains in place, along with the subway action plan.

WASHINGTON (AP) — A group of 11 House Republicans has introduced articles of impeachment against Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who oversees special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian election interference and President Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign. The Republicans who introduced the resolution have criticized Rosenstein for not being responsive enough as they have requested documents related to the Russia investigation and a closed investigation into Democrat Hillary Clinton’s emails. It is unclear whether there will be enough support in the party to pass it, as Republican leaders have not signed on to the effort. The articles were introduced by North Carolina Rep. Mark Meadows and Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan, frequent critics of the Justice Department. The introduction does not trigger an immediate vote, but Meadows and Jordan could make procedural moves on the House floor that could force a vote late this week or when the House returns from its upcoming five-week recess in September. The House is scheduled to leave for that recess Thursday. The move came about two hours after GOP lawmakers met with Justice Department officials who have been working to provide documents to several congressional committees about decisions made during the 2016 presidential campaign. The department has provided lawmakers with more than 800,000 documents, but Meadows said after the meeting that there was still “frustration” with how Justice has handled the oversight requests. Republican leaders, however, have said in recent weeks that they are satisfied with the Justice Department’s progress. House Oversight and Government Reform Chairman Trey Gowdy said after the meeting that he was pleased with the department’s efforts and wouldn’t support Rosenstein’s impeachment. House Speaker Paul Ryan has also said he is satisfied with progress on the document production. Democrats have criticized Republican efforts to pressure the Justice Department in recent months, saying they are attempts to undermine Mueller’s investigation. NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Two Oscar winners are bringing star power to a new mini-series about a dramatic 2015 Upstate prison break. David Sweat and Richard Matt’s mug shots were on front pages everywhere after the convicted killers broke out of maximum security Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora. They were aided by lovesick prison seamstress Joyce Mitchell. The manhunt gripped the nation and has now grabbed Hollywood’s attention. Director Ben Stiller is finishing Escape at Dannemora in time for a premiere this fall. “I think this story has every element that would grab Hollywood,” Chelsia Rose Marcius, journalist and author of Wild Escape , told CBS2. “There’s so much material to work with, there’s so much of a story to be told.” Escape at Dannemora is based off of Marcius’ book. She spent 100 hours interviewing Sweat, who told Marcius he felt “born again” during his 22 days on the run. In the upcoming miniseries he’s portrayed by actor Paul Dano, from 12 Years A Slave and There Will Be Blood . “David Sweat had not been out of prison for 12 years,” Marcius recalled. “Just simple things like seeing the lakes and rivers and mountains were a big deal for him.” Oscar winners Benicio Del Toro and Patricia Arquette star as Richard Matt and Joyce Mitchell, and Sopranos star Michael Imperioli was cast as New York Governor Andrew Cuomo. Showtime, the network slated to air the miniseries, has not yet released a picture of the actor as the governor. Cuomo’s schedule shows he spent time with Imperioli and series writer Bret Johnson in December. “I think in the series the governor is a supporting character, but during the event he was a leading man, touring the prison, leading the briefings, he was all over it,” Marcius said. “During the escape, during the manhunt he said ‘this is made for TV, this is a movie script’.” Sweat certainly had a flair for the dramatic, leaving a taunting note for investigators to find. Escape at Dannemora is schedule to premiere at a festival in France in October.

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — The widow of Tristan Beaudette — the man killed while camping with the couple’s two young daughters at Malibu State Creek Park — has issued a statement. “I would like to express my sincere gratitude to my family, friends, and the community at large for the outpouring of love and support over the loss of someone who was beloved to so many. Tristan’s passing has been incredibly difficult for me and my family and we continue to grieve over this senseless loss,” Erica Wu said. “Tristan was a devoted husband and father whose life revolved around our family, our happiness, and his hopes and dreams for our future. We met when we were teenagers, grew up together, married, and had two amazing and beautiful daughters. In everything that he did, Tristan was kind, selfless, and giving, and had a natural ability to connect with just about anyone. We supported each other as we pursued our careers while balancing what truly mattered most: spending time with our girls and living life to the fullest. I may never understand why our time together was cut short, but we had an incredible journey and I am so grateful for every day I had with him.” (credit: the Beaudette family) Detectives are hoping reward money will lead them to a suspect. Officials said they are working some promising leads. They have not offered a motive for the crime . Meanwhile, Wu is still trying to come to grips with her loss. “Tristan rejoiced in sharing his love of the outdoors with the girls and believed that campgrounds were the definition of a sanctuary where people could feel safe and secure. I am so thankful to Supervisor Kuehl, the City of Malibu, and Allergan plc for their contributions to a reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspect(s), and encourage anyone with knowledge about the events of that early morning on Friday, June 22 to please contact the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department at: (323) 890-5500.” Detectives say they have developed valuable information during the course of their investigation and are working closely with investigators from other agencies. Officials are asking the public’s assistance and are asking anyone with information to contact the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500. If you prefer to provide information anonymously, you may call “Crime Stoppers” by dialing (800) 222-TIPS (8477), use your smartphone by downloading the “P3 Tips” Mobile APP on Google play or the Apple App Store or by using the website http://lacrimestoppers.org This crime has placed an emotional strain on the family. But Wu says the support received from family and friends as well as both public and private organizations, to include Crime Survivors, has been greatly appreciated.

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — When LAPD Officer Nick Wiltz gears up for work, it’s not that simple. He’s the only field officer with a prosthetic leg. KCAL9’s Jeff Nguyen spoke to Wiltz about his return to work and his new challenges. How’s it feel to be back in your uniform?, Wiltz was asked. “It feels amazing,” he said. It’s a story that is Only On 9. Wiltz didn’t start out like this. CBS2/KCAL9 first met him in July of 2016 — when he graduated at the top of his class from the academy. He graduated following the deadly shooting attacks against police officers in Dallas. “If something tragic happens, you don’t get a moment to pause. You have to get back out there to serve the community,” he said at the time. Only two-months later, Wiltz lost his left leg in an off-duty crash. He was hit by a car while riding his motorcycle in Fullerton. Doctors didn’t think he was going to make it. But they didn’t know Wiltz’ spirit and determination. “Sadly, tragedy strikes everybody but you kind to have to like I said figure out how that is going to fuel you to help you get you towards your goals. To get you to help everyone around you,” he says. Wiltz says his family helped him to get past dozens of surgeries and procedures before he was able to get back into working shape. (credit: CBS) Today, two-months after returning to full duty, Wiltz met with new LAPD Chief Michael Moore He was at the hospital the night of the crash when doctors said Wiltz’ chance of survival was slim. “It reminds me so many times, life tells you that you can’t and it really is, so much of it is, about saying yes I can,” Moore told Nguyen. Wiltz initially did light work at Wilshire Division because he hadn’t gotten his prosthetic leg yet. His training coordinator says he used crutches to get around and sometimes less than that. “And I would look up and see him going up the stairs with one leg,” says Sgt. Mario Rojas. Wiltz joined the police at a time when the use of force was often questioned. He says he wants to help repair some of the bad feelings of the past. “You’re making an impact on the community if you’re doing it the right way. I’m not going to let injuries hold me back from achieving those goals.”

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) — Star receiver Odell Beckham Jr. showed another sign he is prepared to put aside his contract talks for now. Beckham reported with fellow veterans for the opening day of Giants training camp. Beckham didn’t talk to the media Wednesday as veterans arrived at the Giants’ headquarters adjacent to MetLife Stadium. The 25-year-old Beckham will earn $8.5 million entering the fifth and final season of his rookie contract. If the Giants do not designate him as a franchise player, he’s eligible to become an unrestricted free agent in 2019. He wants to be the NFL’s highest-paid player. First-year coach Pat Shurmur plans to be cautious how his three-time Pro Bowl receiver will be used, especially in training camp. Beckham broke his left ankle in Week 5 and never returned as the Giants finished 3-13. MORE: Everything You Need To Know For 2018 NY Giants Training Camp “As we go forward, he’s coming back from injury,” Shurmur said. “We’re going to continue to be smart about what we give him from the start.” Shurmur punted when asked if Beckham’s contract status would be a distraction to the team. “We don’t talk about contracts,” he said. “The focus for me is to keep the players thinking about football.” Shurmur takes over a team ranked 31st in total defense and 21st in offense last season. The offense should benefit from running back Saquon Barkley , the second overall pick in the draft. “He’s very smart, he gets it,” said Shurmur of the Penn State standout. “In a lot of ways that’s a great place to start. He’s super-talented. The thing that stuck out to me is he embraces work. The mind is always looking for an easy way out and he doesn’t.” The Giants significantly upgraded their offensive line by signing left tackle Nate Solder from New England. That moves Ereck Flowers, the Giants’ top pick in 2015, to right tackle. Flowers struggled to protect Eli Manning in the passing game. Second-round pick Will Hernandez out of UTEP should vie for a spot at guard. The defense, which will have a 3-4 look this season under new coordinator James Bettcher, will be bolstered by the additions of free-agent linebackers Alec Ogletree, Kareem Martin and Connor Barwin, who was signed Wednesday. Manning returns for his 15th year and is buoyed by the prospects of throwing to a healthy Beckham; second-year tight-end Evan Engram; the speedy Sterling Shepard, who caught 59 passes as a slot target; and Barkley. “I’m excited about the guys who are on this offense.” Manning said. “The receivers, the offensive line, the playmakers we have. It looks good on paper, but we have to make sure we do what we need to do on the field. “There’s always expectations and no one has higher expectations than I do. You have to make the most of it each and every season.” Never in the 92-year history of the franchise had the Giants lost 13 games in a season. For the first time in 39 seasons, they will be led by a new head coach and general manager (Dave Gettleman) after Ben McAdoo and GM Jerry Reese were fired. Gettleman, however, is undergoing treatment for lymphoma. NOTES: Olivier Vernon, who will move from DE to a pass-rushing outside LB, said he will leave the national anthem policy to the commissioner and the NFL Players Association. Vernon was the only Giants player to take a knee every game last season. . Former special teams coordinator Tom Quinn is back. He is helping the club while current coordinator Thomas McGaughey deals with “health issues.” …There is some concern whether supplemental draft pick Sam Beal will play this season. The cornerback hurt a shoulder in rookie practices this week and might need surgery. (© Copyright 2018 CBS Broadcasting Inc. All Rights Reserved. The Associated Press contributed to this report.)

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman expects injured catcher Gary Sanchez will be sidelined until late August or early September because a strained right groin. Cashman updated Sanchez’s status during a Wednesday conference call that centered on the Yankees’ acquisition of reliever Zach Britton from Baltimore for three prospects late Tuesday. Sanchez was put back on the 10-day disabled list Tuesday because of the injury, a day after failing to hustle on a pair of key plays in a 7-6 loss to Tampa Bay. Sanchez missed 20 games from June 25 to July 19 because of the groin problem. Austin Romine is filling in for Sanchez. Kyle Higashioka was recalled for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to be Romine’s backup. Cashman said it was a difficult trade market to acquire more catchers. (© Copyright 2018 The Associated Press. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Aiko Herzig-Yoshinaga, who uncovered proof thousands of Japanese-Americans incarcerated in the United States during World War II were held not for reasons of national security but because of racism, has died. Bruce Embrey, co-chair of the Manzanar Committee, said Wednesday that Herzig-Yoshinaga died July 18 at her home in the Los Angeles suburb of Torrance. She was 93. Her discovery of a 1942 document in the National Archives revealed that approximately 120,000 Japanese-Americans weren’t sent to camps around the country for national security concerns. The real reason, according to the document, was because Japanese cultural ties led authorities to believe it was not possible to tell spies from law-abiding citizens. The revelation led to a 1988 executive order from President Ronald Reagan offering apologies and $20,000 payments to each of those incarcerated. (© Copyright 2018 The Associated Press.
