NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — The Sanitation Department has moved a truck in Brooklyn that has been illegally parked at a bus stop for months, making for dangerous conditions for riders. CBS2 has been reporting on the large truck that was parked in front of the bus stop at Fountain and Wortman avenues in East New York. Residents said they’ve been complaining about the danger it posed, saying no one was listening. On Wednesday, the white GMC box truck suddenly had Georgia plates that expired in 1995. It previously had no license plates on it at all.

PATERSON, N.J. (CBSNewYork) — A food delivery driver was shot and killed while on the job in Paterson. Police say it happened early Thursday morning in the area of East 34th Street near 19th Avenue. According to sources, it is believed that a food order was called into a Chinese restaurant, CBS2’s Jenna DeAngelis reported. When the delivery driver showed up on East 34th Street around 1 a.m., CBS2 was told the person was shot during an attempted robbery, DeAngelis reported. It’s unclear if the victim was actually robbed. It appears the driver crashed into several parked cars while trying to flee from the scene. The victim was rushed to the hospital, but did not survive. Neighbors woke up to unexpected police activity. “I just realized there was flashing lights outside and I came outside and then I saw this massive accident. This is like where we always park in the night,” said resident Phillip Nelson. “It’s very seldom that we have this type of police activity out here.” A little over a week ago, there was a similar scenario a few miles away. A 27-year-old was shot and killed while making a pizza delivery in Clifton. As far as Thursday’s incident, CBS2 has reached out to the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office and Paterson police for more information but have not heard back.

ANAHEIM (AP) — Mike Trout, Albert Pujols and Shohei Ohtani all homered in the same game for the first time, and the Los Angeles Angels routed Chicago White Sox 11-3 on Wednesday night. Pujols passed Ken Griffey Jr. for sixth place on the career list with his 631st home run. Trout connected twice and drove in four runs. Ohtani added a two-run shot projected at 446 feet. Tyler Skaggs (8-6) tied a career high with nine strikeouts in six overpowering innings for Los Angeles. He whiffed his first five batters — the previous Angels pitcher to accomplish that was Jim Abbott at Oakland in September 1995. Trout had another grand day with his 13th career multihomer game. He hit a solo shot in the first inning and a three-run drive in the sixth to give him 28 homers this season. The two-time MVP went 3 for 4 and scored three runs. Pujols hit a solo homer to left field in the second, his 17th of the season. The 38-year-old slugger even swiped third in the fourth for his first stolen base this year. Skaggs retired the first 10 batters he faced, seven by strikeout. He allowed two runs, one earned, and four hits. James Shields (4-12) had another difficult outing for Chicago, giving up three home runs. He struck out six in the first two innings but also allowed two solo homers during that stretch. He permitted six runs on seven hits and three walks in four innings. Kole Calhoun doubled in the fifth for the go-ahead RBI as the Angels broke through with a four-run rally. They added five runs in the sixth. Ohtani batted second for the third time this season. The two-way rookie star from Japan hit his ninth home run. Matt Davidson had a solo homer in the ninth for the White Sox. TRAINER’S ROOM Angels: RHP Garrett Richards had Tommy John surgery on Tuesday. Initial indications are that it went well, according to manager Mike Scioscia. UP NEXT White Sox: RHP Dylan Covey (4-5, 4.95 ERA) pitched a career-high 8 1/3 innings in his last start, a win at Seattle. He took a no-hitter into the sixth. Angels: RHP Nick Tropeano (3-5, 4.58) makes his second start since spending time on the disabled list with shoulder inflammation. He is looking for his first win at Angel Stadium since 2016. LARCHMONT VILLAGE (CBSLA) — The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power says they might need to take drastic measures to fix the city’s old and crumbling power system. And by drastic, they mean months of outages and forced blackouts and closing business streets during rush hour. KCAL9’s Suzanne Marques reported from Larchmont Village Wednesday night where some residents said they’ve had enough of their share of power outages. The residents say they’ve had to deal with no electricity and no AC during our heat waves — they’re hot, they have spoiled food and patience is wearing thin in triple-digit heat. Larchmont Village has had several power outages as have Beverly Glen, Mid-City and Windsor Square. And they say they’ve been dealing with the outages for years. The latest outage in Larchmont Village last three days. “It was really difficult for us, we’re expecting, it was 107 degrees, we really couldn’t stay in the house, we had to go out and get a hotel,” says Carri Brown. Once the summer and these heat waves pass, the LAWDP says they have a plan to try something new — planned outages to fix the power grid and outdated infrastructure. The LADWP raised rates a few years ago, and says it now wants to put that money to good use, this fall or winter, to make the fixes. “When we had those big rain storms last year, they said they were doing transformers in the alley and they shut us down for a few hours, they said all that was done thumbs up,” says Steve Cohen, owner of Village Pizzeria. Cohen says despite past promises, the power failures always happen again. “I’ve been here 21 years, we’ve had power failures at least one or two a year, for the length of time I’ve been here,” Cohen says. LADWP says, this time it would be different. Planned power outages in neighborhoods, with a heads up a few days before. outages lasting 5-6 hours at a time while they worked in the ground, in neighborhoods without visible power lines. But places with underground cables they’d have to dig up and repair, which takes extra time and work “I feel like everybody would support that,” says Brown ,”because all anybody’s been talking about is updating the grid and feeling the frustration of not having the grid updated. So if we knew in advance, we could plan everything, it would absolutely be worth it.” The work in some neighborhoods would take months, and there would be road closures, because they would have to dig into the ground or people’s backyards. But they say the planned outages would happen when power use is low, like during work or school hours in neighborhoods, and on the weekends in places that are busy during the week like downtown LA.

SILVER LAKE (CBSLA) — An emotional vigil was held Wednesday for Melyda “Mely” Corado, the Trader Joe’s manager who was fatally wounded in a shootout between police and an attempted murder suspect last Saturday. “There is a piece of it that feels like it happened to me, This was a tragedy and a trauma that affected all of us,” said one woman, one of hundreds who came out to show their support for the victim and her family. KCAL9’s Crystal Cruz reports that tragedy is what brought out many people in Silver Lake just outside the store where Corado was killed. “It was incredibly horrifying what happened here and I just wanted to show my support for the victim and her family and everyone who was involved with that,” said one young man. The community is keeping Corado’s family, including her brother Albert, in their thoughts. The LAPD released body camera video and confirmed Corado was killed by one of their bullets. They were returning fire from suspect Gene Atkins who took hostages after shooting his girlfriend and grandmother. The L.A. County Coroner identified Melyda “Mely” Corado as the victim of the shooting at the Silver Trader Joe’s on July 21, 2018. (Source: Joe Cordova/GoFundMe) Silver Lake resident, and well-known actress Anne-Marie Johnson says she doesn’t blame the officers. “I’m not second guessing the LAPD. People would be complaining if they didn’t take action,” Johnson said. A priest prayed and blessed the sidewalk where a memorial of flowers and heartfelt notes like “I didn’t know you but I can tell by the posts and your pics that you were one of the good ones” are being left. Neighbor Jerome Courshon hopes politicians are watching. “Look this a wake up call on some level for people to realize that gun violence is an issue that hasn’t been addressed by our elected representatives, and I’m pro gun. But we don’t have any viable laws on the books across this country,” Jerome Courshon. The attorney for Corado’s family plans on releasing a statement about her death on Thursday.

NEWPORT BEACH (CBSLA) — A stunt gone wrong in Newport Beach. As CBSLA’s Tina Patel reports, a guy jumped off the Lido Island Bridge and slammed into a boat. A woman on that boat was injured but before she could do anything the jumper got away. Video posted to social media shows a boy, possibly in his late teens, jump off a bridge onto the canopy of a boat passing underneath. The canopy buckled under his weight. The woman who rented the boat was hit in the head but luckily only suffered minor injuries. She said the boy fell off into the water then before she could do anything he swam to shore and limped away. “It looked intentional. I don’t want to say it was,” said Jake Leonardo, manager of the boat rental company OC Boat Rental. “I’m not going to put anyone’s actions, say someone’s actions were intentional. But it appears that way. It looks like he was trying to jump over the boat as a joke but either way it’s an unsafe situation for anybody.” Harbor Patrol responded. They are looking into the incident. They don’t know if it could be considered assault since the teen might have been trying to jump over the boat but they want to identify who it is. If you have any information on who it might be, you’re asked to come forward.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — To the displeasure of straphangers across all five boroughs, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority on Wednesday announced plans to increase fares twice over the next three years. Riders who’ve had it with bad service say they’re not happy about the Wednesday bombshell. “As we stated in November and February, the MTA requires new revenue for operations and for capital,” MTA Chief Financial Officer Robert Foran said. Translation? Despite the delays, the breakdowns, and the frustrations, fares are going up for subways, commuter lines, and buses. Riders across the board weren’t happy about it. “I think it’s absurd,” one straphanger told CBS2. “It’s not like we’re seeing an improvement in service.” “As a student I think it’s really challenging,” one woman said. The MTA announced it will raise fares by four percent in both 2019 and 2021. As for specific details, those may take a while. “Those are forecasted, they’re still subjected to our needs,” Foran said. “They’re subject to our public hearings and subject to board action. We’ve increased saving targets, we just have to cut more cost.” But what about the delays, or the constantly crammed subway cars, and the so-called “incidents” that could make you hours late for work? The MTA says they’re working on it. “The figure I plugged in is not particularly scientific at the moment,” Transit Authority President Andy Byford said. “I just said at the moment we’re around 70,000 delay incidents a month and that’s far too high.” In response, Byford says he’s proposed a target of 10,000 “incidents” by the end of 2018. The one thing the MTA has been consistent with all along is fare hikes. The newest round of raises will bring the total number to seven since 2009, part of the plan to raise fares every two years as part of a financial rescue. Riders say they’re just not buying it. “The fares increase, but the service just stays the same or gets worse,” one man said. MTA Chair Joe Lhota says the state of emergency remains in place, along with the subway action plan.

WASHINGTON (AP) — A group of 11 House Republicans has introduced articles of impeachment against Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who oversees special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian election interference and President Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign. The Republicans who introduced the resolution have criticized Rosenstein for not being responsive enough as they have requested documents related to the Russia investigation and a closed investigation into Democrat Hillary Clinton’s emails. It is unclear whether there will be enough support in the party to pass it, as Republican leaders have not signed on to the effort. The articles were introduced by North Carolina Rep. Mark Meadows and Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan, frequent critics of the Justice Department. The introduction does not trigger an immediate vote, but Meadows and Jordan could make procedural moves on the House floor that could force a vote late this week or when the House returns from its upcoming five-week recess in September. The House is scheduled to leave for that recess Thursday. The move came about two hours after GOP lawmakers met with Justice Department officials who have been working to provide documents to several congressional committees about decisions made during the 2016 presidential campaign. The department has provided lawmakers with more than 800,000 documents, but Meadows said after the meeting that there was still “frustration” with how Justice has handled the oversight requests. Republican leaders, however, have said in recent weeks that they are satisfied with the Justice Department’s progress. House Oversight and Government Reform Chairman Trey Gowdy said after the meeting that he was pleased with the department’s efforts and wouldn’t support Rosenstein’s impeachment. House Speaker Paul Ryan has also said he is satisfied with progress on the document production. Democrats have criticized Republican efforts to pressure the Justice Department in recent months, saying they are attempts to undermine Mueller’s investigation. GOP House Members Move To Impeach Deputy AG Rod Rosenstein
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Two Oscar winners are bringing star power to a new mini-series about a dramatic 2015 Upstate prison break. David Sweat and Richard Matt’s mug shots were on front pages everywhere after the convicted killers broke out of maximum security Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora. They were aided by lovesick prison seamstress Joyce Mitchell. The manhunt gripped the nation and has now grabbed Hollywood’s attention. Director Ben Stiller is finishing Escape at Dannemora in time for a premiere this fall. “I think this story has every element that would grab Hollywood,” Chelsia Rose Marcius, journalist and author of Wild Escape , told CBS2. “There’s so much material to work with, there’s so much of a story to be told.” Escape at Dannemora is based off of Marcius’ book. She spent 100 hours interviewing Sweat, who told Marcius he felt “born again” during his 22 days on the run. In the upcoming miniseries he’s portrayed by actor Paul Dano, from 12 Years A Slave and There Will Be Blood . “David Sweat had not been out of prison for 12 years,” Marcius recalled. “Just simple things like seeing the lakes and rivers and mountains were a big deal for him.” Oscar winners Benicio Del Toro and Patricia Arquette star as Richard Matt and Joyce Mitchell, and Sopranos star Michael Imperioli was cast as New York Governor Andrew Cuomo. Showtime, the network slated to air the miniseries, has not yet released a picture of the actor as the governor. Cuomo’s schedule shows he spent time with Imperioli and series writer Bret Johnson in December. “I think in the series the governor is a supporting character, but during the event he was a leading man, touring the prison, leading the briefings, he was all over it,” Marcius said. “During the escape, during the manhunt he said ‘this is made for TV, this is a movie script’.” Sweat certainly had a flair for the dramatic, leaving a taunting note for investigators to find. Escape at Dannemora is schedule to premiere at a festival in France in October.
