PALO ALTO, Calif. (CBSLocal) – A teenager is in serious trouble after going on a bizarre crime spree when his phone reportedly ran out of data. The 17-year-old suspect from Palo Alto was arrested after allegedly breaking into an area home, waking up a sleeping couple, and asking them to give him their WiFi password. “The male victim got out of bed, confronted the suspect, and pushed him down the hallway and out the front door of the house before calling police. No one was injured,” Pal Alto police said in a news release . The couple – both reportedly in their 60s – told officers that two kitchen knives went missing from their home during the teen’s alleged break-in, however police didn’t find any weapons on the suspected burglar when he was caught. According to authorities, the teen’s crime wave allegedly started a day earlier on July 21. The teen is believed to be the same person who came up to the window of a different home and asked a woman inside for her Wifi password. The teen reportedly claimed his phone was out of data. When the woman and another teen in the home ordered the suspect to leave their property, he allegedly fled on one of the their bikes. Officers say they found the stolen bike near the same location where the suspected WiFi-seeking crook was stopped by police. According to the release, “officers returned the bicycle to the victim and are recommending that the District Attorney’s Office add a charge of misdemeanor petty theft against the suspect.” The suspect – who was not publicly identified because he’s a minor – was taken to Santa Clara County Juvenile Hall and is facing a felony charge of burglary. He’s also been charged with prowling and providing false information to an officer, both misdemeanors.

BURBANK (CBSLA) – Disney became the late company to announce it will be getting rid of plastic straws. The company said it will be eliminating “single-use plastic straws and plastic stirrers” by mid-2019 at all its theme parks and other operations worldwide. According to Disney, 175 million straws and 13 million stirrers are used at its locations per year. “Eliminating plastic straws and other plastic items are meaningful steps in our long-standing commitment to environmental stewardship,” said Bob Chapek, Chairman of Disney Parks, Experiences, and Consumer Products, in a statement. This comes after Starbucks also announced earlier this month it would be eliminating plastic straws at all its stores by 2020. Disney also said it would be working to offer “refillable in-room amenities” at its hotels and cruise ships and reduce plastic bags and polystyrene cups at its parks and cruise lines. Disney alleges that it cut its greenhouse gas emissions by 41 percent in 2017.

PHOENIX, Ariz. (CBS Local) – Customers of Walmart and other businesses in the Phoenix area will soon have a chance to go shopping in self-driving cars. Waymo, a subsidiary of Google-parent company Alphabet, is teaming with the retail giant to test a program that’ll have people riding in self-driving cars to run errands and shop, the autonomous car company said Wednesday. People who order groceries on Walmart.com will get discounts, and as their orders are being readied, driver-less Waymo vehicles will bring customers to and from a Walmart store in Chandler, Arizona. Waymo is also teaming with Avis, AutoNation, Element Hotel and commercial real estate firm DDR to offer self-driving vehicles to people doing business with the companies. “While these are metro Phoenix-specific partnerships today, these businesses are national, and what we learn from these programs will give us a network of partners when we launch in new cities down the road,” Waymo said in a blog post . The service is initially available to about 400 participants in Waymo’s early-rider program within a 100-square-mile section of Phoenix. The company that started in 2009 as Google’s self-driving car project will also give people rides while their cars are serviced at area AutoNation repair shops, along with lifts to restaurants and shops in the Ahwatukee Foothills Town Center. Tom Ward, a Walmart vice president, put in a plug for the pilot project in his own blog post . “Our personal shoppers get to work meticulously picking customers’ orders based on their pickup times. Waymo does the rest! They transport customers to and from pickup, and all the while, those customers can text, nap, work… you name it!” Waymo will hope its self-driving trial in Arizona steers clear of the problems that hurt Uber earlier this year. The ride-hailing company halted its own autonomous driving program in the state earlier this year after a self-driving vehicle struck and killed a woman in Phoenix. A police investigation later found that the back-up driver behind the wheel of the Uber vehicle had been watching a TV program on her phone. [H/T CBS News ]

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA/AP) – Former NBA star Lamar Odom is returning to the hardwood. In an Instagram post Thursday, the 38-year-old wrote that he will be playing professional basketball in China. Lamar Odom attends The Players’ Tribune Hosts Players’ Night Out 2017 at The Beverly Hills Hotel on July 11, 2017. (Getty Images) “My heart literally warms up now I can finally share with you all that I’m returning to play Basketball,” Odom wrote. “I will be playing in China! God is good!” Odom did not elaborate on where he will be playing or what his contract looks like. He last played in the NBA in the 2012-13 season, when he appeared for the Los Angeles Clippers. He signed a contract with the New York Knicks in 2014, but was cut by the team before appearing in a game. Odom had two NBA titles with the L.A. Lakers in 2010 and 2011. He won the NBA’s sixth man award during that second championship run. In his post, Odom thanks former NBA star Stephon Marbury, for “being my inspiration.” After leaving the NBA, Marbury had a long and successful career in the Chinese Basketball Association. Odom has struggled with drug addiction for years. In 2015, he was found unconscious with cocaine in his system in a Nevada brothel. He was unconscious on life support in a Las Vegas hospital before making an incredible recovery. He blamed cocaine for helping end his NBA career. Last year, he told US Weekly that “drugs killed my drive to want to train and be in shape.” He divorced reality TV star Khloe Kardashian in 2016. The two had been married for four years when Kardashian filed for divorce in 2013. She temporarily rescinded the filing after his cocaine overdose, but later re-filed it.
