TOM’S RIVER, N.J. (CBSNewYork) – Ocean County is ready to step into the spotlight and showcase its beaches and boardwalks. Since Gov. Phil Murphy signed into law the Garden State Film and Digital Media Jobs Act , which provides companies with tax credits for certain expenses incurred while filming, the New Jersey county is hoping to be the next Hollywood, reports CBS2’s Meg Baker. “We not only have gorgeous 44 miles of beaches in Ocean County, but we also have the Barnegat Bay, we also have the Pine Barrens, which is the mystique of the Pine Barrens and the beauty of that, and then we have farm land,” said Dana Lancellotti, Division Director of Business Development and Tourism for Ocean County. This New Jersey pride is shared by the locals. “Where I’m from — I live by the woods and what not — but if you travel 10 minutes, you can see the beach. So it’s very diverse,” said Gabriella Alexander, of Toms River. “It’s the beach, it’s the summer town, but it’s also the small-town feel,” said Charlie Coraggio, of Lacey. The Board of Freeholders has established a film and television advisory commission to entice production companies to bring their projects to the area. Gov. Chris Christie suspended the production tax credits program in 2010, saying it was not affordable. The new state law now in effect provides up to $75 million in tax credits for film production and up to $10 million for digital media over five years. Officials say the movie biz down the shore thrived decades ago, with films like Ragtime and Woody Allen’s Stardust Memories . More recently, scenes in the remake of The Manchurian Candidate were filmed on the beach. “They actually made our sand areas down in southern Ocean County look like it was a desert, so that’s pretty funny. So they were able to use our backdrop to represent someplace that was nowhere near here,” said Lancellotti. But then, the industry found cheaper locations to shoot. Tourism is a $4.8 billion economic engine for the county, and by adding stars and bright lights to the equation, that could mean millions more. “They need to stay in the area, the hotels benefit, the services and restaurants and everything benefit from crews being here,” said Lancellotti “But it also shows the picturesque beauty.” Conversations with the film industry have already begun. The plan is to bring in jobs and give the county a positive image nationally.

Revival Of Tax Credits To Help New Jersey Win As Next New Hollywood
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – It has been nearly 17 years since the September 11 th terror attacks , and remains of one of the victims have just been identified. As CBS2’s Cindy Hsu reports, the medical examiner’s officer was able to make the ID through a new kind of DNA testing. More than 2,700 people were killed when the Twin Towers were attacked, including 26-year-old Scott Johnson who was working as a securities analyst at an investment bank on the 89 th floor of the South Tower. The Montclair, New Jersey man was a big ice hockey player, so his family donated a hockey puck in remembrance to the 9/11 Memorial Museum. You can also find his name at the South Memorial Pool. The only thing found at the scene for his family to hold onto was his wallet – until now. This week, the medical examiner’s office announced it has identified Johnson’s bone through new DNA testing, where special chemicals are used to remove DNA from the bone fragments. One of the main difficulties in the process of going through 22,000 remains is how degraded the fragments are. “These remains went through, at Ground Zero, things like fire and water, jet fuel, sunlight, mold and bacteria – these will all destroy DNA,” said Mark Desire, of the medical examiner’s office. Johnson is now the 1,642 nd person to be identified. So far, 60 percent of those who died at the Twin Towers have been identified through remains, and each time a family is notified, it hits home for the forensics team. “It gets very emotional each time, and that relationship and the ‘thank yous’ and the hugging, it’s a very special project,” Desire said. He said the office made a promise to 9/11 families to keep searching for the remains of their loved ones, and he hopes more advances in DNA testing will allow them to keep that promise. The medical examiner’s office says the last ID was made in August of last year, but the victim’s family did not want the name released.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – The NYPD Explorer program offers young men and women an introduction to a career in law enforcement. Lesandro “Junior” Guzman-Feliz was a member of the tight-knit team , often seen wearing his Explorer jacket proudly around his Bronx neighborhood. A dozen alleged Trinitarios gang members await trial in his murder outside a bodega in June. But in the months that have followed, his death has inspired other young adults to follow in his footsteps. “It gives them that opportunity, it opens that door for them,” NYPD Explorer Chief Anthony Vargas said. Vargas is the highest ranking member of the program. So he knows firsthand how much the mentoring initiative helps kids and young adults. “I’ve met many kids that’ve had these struggling times, even within the program. At the very start, they still have these issues. You can’t just expect that it’s going to right away, it’s a switch of a button” he said. He enrolled the second he was eligible at just 14 years old. Now at 21, the University of Buffalo student comes back every summer to help. “It gives them the guide to go to the end of the tunnel and see what it really means to be a leader in this world,” said Vargas. Since Guzman-Feliz’s death, NYPD Chief of Community Affairs Nilda Hoffman says enrollment has jumped nearly 30 percent. “To the Explorers, Junior now is like a hero,” she said. “With an unfortunate incident, our hope is to be able to save many other young people within New York City.” About 2,800 Explorers are stationed at every NYPD precinct and sub-division. They shadow police officers and learn about careers in law enforcement or criminal justice. They are also taught the importance of higher education, self-discipline and respect. “There’s resources out there, and here we are, here are the resources, they were always here. This program has been here for more than 20 years,” said Det. Roger Bennett, post adviser of the 44 th Precinct. Police officers who serve as advisers have a direct impact on the kids, like Jaleesa Ventura who started six years ago and says her advisers taught her the importance of community service. “I just love helping the community, being active, involved and just making people smile, and I like to make a change,” she said. Children wishing to enroll in the program need to be between the ages of 14 and 20 years old, but kids as young as 10 can start at some precincts. For more information, click here .

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (CBSNewYork) — The long wait is over for Giants fans. The New York Giants took the field Thursday afternoon at the Quest Diagnostics Training Center in the Meadowlands for the first official practice of 2018 training camp. It’s just A few hundred yards away from MetLife Stadium where the Giants went through one of the more embarrassing seasons in team history. From the owner down, the organization is looking for redemption. Giants president and co-owner John Mara has been through 62 New York Giant football training camps, so he’s seen it all, and he doesn’t want to see another season like the last. “I haven’t gotten over last season,” said Mara. “I have to be honest about it, I did not see it coming. I felt very good this time last year. I think most of you predicted that we were going to have a great season — some of you even predicted we’d go to the Super Bowl.” Mara knows a healthy and happy Odell Beckham Jr. will have to play an integral part in a trip to this year’s Super Bowl. He says talks for a new contract will begin sooner rather than later. And that’s music to Eli Manning’s ears. “He’s unbelievably talented,” said Manning. ”He’s great in practice and in games, so just having him back, he brings an energy and excitement.” “It’s just something in him,” said wide receiver Sterling Shepard. “He’s just hungry. He’s ready to get out there and prove to everybody that he still has it. You guys have seen the Instagram videos, it’s crazy, and to see it firsthand, it’s wild.” Every team is undefeated at this point of the season. Giant fans believe this team has what it takes to get back into the playoffs. “Oh absolutely, absolutely. I like the fact that we’re under the radar. We just got the rookies, they’re just looking at that, but we’re under the radar. That’s what I like,” fan David McClendon said. “Watching Beckham run his routes is exciting. Still got (Sterling) Shepard, (Evan) Engram, (Saquon) Barkley. I mean, it’s very exciting,” said fan Dan Knowles. “This is a new year. We’re ready,” Geovanny Tarazona said. The New York Jets also reported to camp Thursday.

NEW YORK (CNN) — Facebook just suffered the biggest wipeout in stock market history. Shares plunged 19% on Thursday after executives warned that revenue growth would slow as the company focuses on user privacy. The sell-off vaporized about $119 billion in market value — the biggest single-day loss for any public company in history, according to Thomson Reuters. For founder Mark Zuckerberg, the loss came to almost $16 billion, according to Forbes , which tracks billionaire wealth in real time. That dropped him from fourth to sixth on the list of richest people in the world. Facebook Chief Financial Officer David Wehner said on a conference call with investors that Facebook is “putting privacy first” after the Cambridge Analytica scandal triggered a wave of horrible press, customer angst and regulatory scrutiny around the world. As an example of its new strategy, Wehner said Facebook will put more development muscle behind the company’s Stories feature. That will put a drag on sales because Facebook makes more money on its core News Feed than its other products. Facebook says it will spend a lot of money to accomplish its goals. Wehner said the company will invest billions of dollars per year improving safety and security after a bruising period of headlines about Facebook’s role in enabling fake news and election meddling. “We think that’s the right thing to do for the business,” he said. The company’s previous worst single-day performance was July 27, 2012, when the stock fell 11.7%. The stock tanked that day after the company failed to convince investors that it could sell mobile advertising. Mobile now makes up 91% of the company’s advertising revenue.
