NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – A 401(k) is the last thing on many young people’s minds. A record number of millennials are quitting their jobs, because they don’t want to be tied down. “It was just that work, commute, hangout with friends, and just do that on repeat,” Sarah Solomon told CBS2’s Jessica Moore. Solomon was living a young professional’s dream until at the age of 25, she decided she was burned out. Her company’s vacation policy was cramping her millennial style. “I didn’t want to have to wait a year before I could take five days at a time going on vacation,” she said. So, she ditched her PR career and its six-figure salary for the life of a digital nomad, representing a few clients remotely as she travels the world, pinching pennies to make ends meet. “I can work and still travel and see the world. And that was really — and then once I got that in my head, I was like, I have to make this happen,” said Solomon. Psychotherapist Jennifer Abcug sees many millennials redefining the traditional trajectory of success. “I think the mindset with some of the millennials is: Why wouldn’t I do this? Because I don’t know what’s going to happen tomorrow,” she said. But not all millennials are buying into the idea. “I think that sounds amazing, but I definitely want a good career and I want to be successful, and that’s not something that interests me,” said Midtown resident Abby Cantor. Frances Franz, of the Upper West Side, said she believes vacation is the reward for hard work, not the other way around. “No, not in a thousand years. I needed to have income. I wanted to be independent,” she said. But Solomon said she can have it both ways and refuses to live with regrets. “I think I’m going to look back and be so proud and happy that I did this, so that’s worth it for me,” she said. A recent survey of more than 10,000 millennials showed 43 percent plan to quit their jobs within two years. Experts say the trend is actually creating a big problem in the hot job market, with myriad job opportunities and not enough qualified candidates willing to work.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Asdrubal Cabrera is well versed in what can happen at the trade deadline. He found himself on the move four years ago when the Cleveland Indians sent him to Washington to help the Nationals make a playoff push. The second baseman is in the same position again with the floundering New York Mets . While he admits he’s wary of what the days leading up to July 31 could bring, he’s trying not to get worked up. The 32-year-old figures if he just comes to the park and hits the way he did in a 12-6 win over Pittsburgh on Thursday, he’ll be fine. “There’s nothing I can control. Whatever they do, they want to do what’s best for the team,” Cabrera said after going 3 for 5 with a home run and four RBIs. “I hope to stay here. I like New York. I like the team, the town.” Potential playoff teams in need of a bat are taking a long look at Cabrera, who boosted his home run total to 18 when he hit a tiebreaking two-run shot off Nick Kingham (5-5) in the fourth to put the Mets ahead to stay. Cabrera entered hitting just .184 (7 for 38) in his prior 12 games but snapped out by taking out his frustration on Kingham and three relievers. Wilmer Flores also hit a two-run homer and had three RBIs as the struggling Mets posted their highest run total since scoring a dozen times against Colorado on June 18. Amed Rosario and Jose Bautista had two hits each as New York sent the Pirates to their second straight loss following an 11-game winning streak that pushed Pittsburgh back into the postseason picture. Steven Matz (5-8) settled down after giving up two-run homers to David Freese and Josh Harrison in the early innings. Matz tied a career-high with nine strikeouts, walked two and retired his final 10 batters to win for just the third time in his last 11 starts. Matz called himself effectively wild and admitted he started to feel a bit better over his last two innings when his arm tired a bit. All nine of his strikeouts came in the first four innings. He pitched to contact over the last two innings, but only one ball left the infield. “It’s almost like I got a little tired and was able to stay smooth instead of muscle up a little bit and I think it helped me out,” Matz said. Freese and Harrison helped the Pirates dig out of early deficits but the Mets kept piling on. Kingham left after Cabrera’s shot in the fourth put New York ahead 6-4. The rookie allowed six runs and seven hits in three-plus innings, the second time in his last four starts he failed to get an out past the third. Command was an issue too. His four walks were a career high. “It makes everything more difficult,” Kingham said. “The other pitches don’t really come to happen. You don’t have a feel for it. It just kinda snowballs into one bad outing.” TRAINER’S ROOM Pirates: C Francisco Cervelli went 0 for 4 and committed an error in his return from concussion-like symptoms that had sidelined hinm since July 14. Cervelli described feeling like he had a “hangover” after getting hit by foul balls or bats in four consecutive games. Though the Cervelli has taken ground balls in practice, there are no plans to put him in a game in the infield anytime soon. “From my perspective, it’s like telling a matador not to fight bulls,” manager Clint Hurdle said. UP NEXT Mets: Jason Vargas (2-6, 8.60 ERA) is expected to come off the DL to start on Friday. Vargas has been out since June 20 with a strained right calf. To make room for Vargas the Mets optioned rookie Corey Oswalt to Triple-A Las Vegas. Pirates: Ivan Nova (6-6, 4.28 ERA) is 4-1 since returning from a stint on the DL with a sprained right ring finger on June 10. He is 1-0 with a 3.18 ERA in five starts against the Mets. NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Gunfire broke out Thursday on a Brooklyn playground. One person was fatally shot just steps from where children were playing soccer. No children were injured, but the playground and athletic field were full of kids enjoying the weather, CBS2’s Ali Bauman reported. Police said a group of men started fighting, one pulled out a gun and opened fire, killing a 21-year-old man with a shot to his back and sending two more men to the hospital – a 20-year-old shot in his arm and a 24-year-old shot in the leg. It happened around 4:30 p.m. at the Bushwick Playground on Knickerbocker Avenue near Woodbine Street. “I was in the field, I was practicing, and then I heard six shots,” one boy told Bauman. “I saw people running from the basketball court towards the field. Then my coach told us to run towards our parents. And then we ran, and we just saw a kid running and he fell down in the field and he was like bleeding.” “I was really scared. I thought they were going to shoot some of my teammates on my soccer team,” he added. “We got scared, and then a lot of people ran out of the park,” said a little girl. The shooting is under investigation. As of late Thursday, no arrests had been made.

ATLANTA (AP) — Manny Machado hit his first home run for Los Angeles, Rich Hill pitched seven dominant innings and the Dodgers routed the Atlanta Braves 8-2 on Thursday night. Machado, acquired last week from Baltimore to add even more punch to a team that leads the National League in homers, went deep in his seventh game with the Dodgers. He lined a fastball into the left-field seats leading off the sixth against Anibal Sanchez, Machado’s 25th homer of the season overall. Hill (4-4) limited the Braves to three hits and a walk while striking out seven, and he even picked up his first RBI of the season. Atlanta managed only one scoring threat against the 38-year-old left-hander, which wasn’t even of Hill’s doing. With two outs in the sixth, Freddie Freeman reached when Machado’s wild throw from third got knocked out of Cody Bellinger’s glove as the first baseman tried to swipe Freeman with a tag. Nick Markakis walked on four pitches — the lone time Atlanta got a runner as far as second base against Hill — but Kurt Suzuki hit an inning-ending flyout. While Sanchez (5-3) turned in another solid outing for the Braves, defensive blunders and a lack of offense ruined his night. Shortstop Charlie Culberson’s throwing error in the fifth led to an unearned run. Another errant throw by second baseman Ozzie Albies in the seventh set up Hill’s run-scoring single, which finished off the Braves starter. Sanchez went 6 1.3 innings and wound up being charged with four earned runs when the Dodgers blew open the game against Sam Freeman. Joc Pederson doubled into the right-field corner, and Yasmani Grandal’s two-out, two-run single stretched the lead to 6-0. Culberson, getting a rare start at shortstop while Dansby Swanson took the night off, was charged with another throwing error in the eighth as the Dodgers tacked on two more runs. The Braves entered with just 48 errors in 98 games, fourth fewest in the NL. Ronald Acuna Jr. provided Atlanta’s only burst of offense with a two-run homer off Daniel Hudson in the eighth. TRAINER’S ROOM Albies was back in the Atlanta lineup after missing four games with a sore right hamstring. The All-Star, one of just two players in the NL with 20 homers and 10 stolen bases, went 0 for 4 and was charged with an error when he made a horrible throw even though he had no chance of getting Alex Verdugo on an infield hit. UP NEXT Dodgers: LHP Clayton Kershaw (3-5, 2.64 ERA) takes the mound in the second of four games at SunTrust Park. He is 3-0 with a 1.47 ERA in nine starts against Atlanta. Braves: RHP Mike Foltynewicz (7-6, 2.85) will be looking to get back on track after three straight rough outings. He has surrendered 21 hits, 14 earned runs and four homers in his last 18 1/3 innings. (@Copyright 2018. The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved. CARSON (CBSLA) — A 1-year-old baby girl is alive Thursday thanks to some LA County Sheriff’s Deputies. CBS2’s Jo Kwon attended a news conference where the grateful parents expressed gratitude to the deputies for saving their daughter. Faith was home eating tortellini for the first time on Saturday night when she began to choke. “I just remember her dad waking me up. I was asleep and he told me that she was choking.” says Kiah Moten. She says she tried to remove the food from her baby’s throat. “It wasn’t coming out so I told him to call 911,” she says. LA County Sheriff’s Deputies Melvin Castro and Omar Sanchez arrived on scene. “The only thing in my mind at first was, ‘It’s not good.’” Castro says. He said Faith wasn’t breathing and she had no pulse. “I remember seeing him run down the driveway and my daughter’s body was like a rag doll,” Moten says. Paramedics had not arrived and every second counts in these situations. Castro made a split-second decision to use their patrol car to get Faith medical help. They took off from Grace Avenue. One of the deputies performed CPR while the other radioed in to clear the streets so they could run Code 3 to the hospital a mile-and-a-half away. (credit: LA County Sheriff’s Dept./Carson) Other deputies helped clear the roads so Faith could get to the ER as soon as possible. “It felt forever, but I want to say it was no more than five minutes,” said Sanchez. It’s a drive he will never forget. “It was my first time ever driving a patrol vehicle,” he says. Mom says the deputies saved her baby’s life. “I just know that if it wasn’t for them, the outcome could have been very different for us,” she says. The deputies said they were just doing their jobs and it was a bit of fate. “Luckily we were at the right place at the right time,” Sanchez says. “And she’s alive, that’s the thing that matters,” Castro says. Police: Suspect In Queens Nurse’s Death Found Holding Another Woman Captive In L.A. Hotel
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Police say they finally caught up with a man wanted in connection with the death of a nurse in Queens, discovering the suspect on the other side of the country with another woman held captive in a Los Angeles hotel room. Danueal Drayton, 27, of New Haven, Conn., was taken into custody Thursday. The hunt began after 29-year-old nurse Samantha Stewart was found dead inside her bedroom at her family home in Springfield Gardens, Queens, on July 17. Police say Stewart suffered trauma to her head and neck. “A lot of sorrow is in my heart,” her aunt, Ruby Dixon, told CBS2’s Tony Aiello after learning about Drayton’s arrest. “My niece was the best you ever could find in a human being.” Danuel Drayton (credit: NYPD) Police had been searching for the person responsible for Stewart’s murder and also another incident involving the rape of a 23-year-old woman that happened the month before in Gowanus, Brooklyn. Both investigations led them to the same suspect, when the joint New York/New Jersey Police Task Force caught up with Drayton. “There was a separate woman in a hotel room in California that was being held against her will,” said NYPD Chief of Detectives Dermot Shea. “Right after he commit a gruesome murder here and destroy my family, he went to California and just almost did the same thing,” Stewart’s father, Kenneth, said. “Thank God they catch him before he could destroy another family.” When we captured Danuel Drayton in LA for the murder of Queens nurse Samantha Stewart, he had another victim held captive. He's off the streets but may have victimized others via online dating sites. Need help or have info? Call 800-577-TIPS/ sex crimes hotline 212-267-RAPE pic.twitter.com/iif7E9KuyA — Chief Dermot F. Shea (@NYPDDetectives) July 26, 2018 Authorities believe Drayton met both of those women on Tinder and their first meeting was in a public space. They say he also may have used other dating sites to meet potential victims. “The common denominator in these two cases – one being a murder, one being a rape – is dating websites,” said Shea. “So this individual is known to us and it is believed by us that this individual uses dating web sites to meet women and then victimize these women.” Police say Drayton was well known to police. He was arrested in June for allegedly choking an ex-girlfriend at Inwood Park in Nassau County. One July 1, his bail was set at $1,000. On July 5, a judge dropped the bail requirement, over the objection of the district attorney, and Drayton walked free. He also has five prior arrests in his home state of Connecticut, including a strangulation arrest in 2011. “I’m devastated by my loss of my daughter, but hearing this news now it really, really shocks me, throws me over the edge,” said Kenneth Stewart. Police believe there may be more victims out there and are asking for anyone affected or who has information to come forward. “Be careful. If you meet up with someone, tell somebody,” Dixon said. “Tell a family member, tell a friend. You don’t know who these monsters are.” Stewart’s funeral is set for Saturday.

7/26: CBS Evening News
ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico (CBSNews) — The Trump administration struggled to meet a c ourt-imposed deadline Thursday for reuniting immigrant children and their parents. Nearly 2,600 children ages 5 years and older were separated at the U.S.-Mexico border . The government announced Thursday evening that 1,820 of those children have been reunited with their parents, while 711 children remain in custody because their parents or relatives are ineligible for reunification. Romela Victoria Isaula and her 13-year-old son Geronimo were finally reunited after crossing the border near El Paso in May and being separated for two months. “I am so happy because I have her close,” Geronimo said through a translator. Now they are heading to Massachusetts where they’ll wait for a judge to decide whether they’ll be granted asylum or sent back to Honduras. The teenager is one of more than 1,800 children recently reunified with a parent or other family member. However, more than 400 of the 711 still in custody have parents who may have already been deported. “I’m worried here that we have 460 parents who have now been deported to Central America and there is a very high likelihood that those parents are not going to see their children again,” said John Sandweg, a former acting director of Immigration Customs Enforcement. Immigration attorneys say the government is making unilateral decisions that include a parents’ health condition and possible criminal history, with no oversight. “There’s a lot of concern that those standards are being inconsistently applied, or parents are being arbitrarily denied access to their children,” Sandweg pointed out. For the hundreds of ineligible children, shelters will continue to be their home while the government figures out its next move. Meanwhile, the ACLU is asking the federal judge for a new deadline of August 1 for more information on the reunifications which would the government’s feet to the fire. Thursday afternoon, the Department of Justice announced they will have reunified all eligible families by the end of the day. (© 2018 CBS Interactive Inc. All Rights Reserved.)

Former LAPD Cadets Who Stole Cruisers For Joyrides To Face Criminal Charges, Sources Say
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — The cadets whose antics kicked off an investigation into alleged sexual abuse by a Los Angeles police officer will be criminally charged, according to sources. Three of the seven former cadets accused of stealing two police cruisers and taking them on joyrides in June 2017 will be charged, two sources who wished to remain anonymous told the LA Times . The L.A. County District Attorney’s office would not confirm the pending charges to the Times, saying it was due to matters of confidentiality regarding minors. Prosecutors are reviewing possible felony charges against Leonel Flores, 20, the only adult cadet, the Times reported. The recruits made headlines nationally after they led police on two pursuits that both ended in crashes on June 15, 2017. An investigation into the youths revealed a 15-year-old female cadet involved in the thefts had allegedly had a sexual relationship with LAPD Officer Robert Cain. Former Chief Charlie Beck personally arrested Cain , then 31, days after the joyriding incidents. Cain pleaded not guilty to charges of unlawful sexual intercourse, oral copulation involving a person under 16 and committing lewd acts on a child. The 10-year LAPD veteran is currently serving two years in county jail for an unrelated weapons charge . Luis Carrillo, an attorney for the girl, confirmed to CBS2 some cadets would be criminally charged. Cain is due in court next month.

NEW YORK (AP) — Yankees slugger Aaron Judge was hit on his right wrist by a pitch and forced to leave early Thursday night, overshadowing New York’s 7-2 romp past the Kansas City Royals. The Yankees said Judge was seen by a team doctor at the stadium and taken to a hospital for an MRI. There was no immediate report on the injury. New York Yankees’ Aaron Judge heads to first base after he was hit by a pitch in the first inning as Salvador Perez #13 of the Kansas City Royals stands by at Yankee Stadium on July 26, 2018. (Photo by Elsa/Getty Images) Normally an All-Star outfielder, Judge was the designated hitter. He winced when he was stung by a fastball from Jakob Junis in the first inning, got an infield hit the next time up and then was pulled for a pinch-hitter in the fourth. On a busy day for the Yankees, Sonny Gray (8-7) pitched five shutout innings to win three straight starts for the first time since last July. He exited soon after getting nicked in the pitching hand by a hard grounder. Didi Gregorius hit a three-run homer for New York, which began the day 5½ games behind AL East-leading Boston. Center fielder Aaron Hicks threw out Alex Gordon at the plate to end the game as Gordon tried to score from second on a single. Before the game, the Yankees obtained Toronto left-hander J.A. Happ in a trade for infielder Brandon Drury and minor league outfielder Billy McKinney. Also, ace reliever Zach Britton tossed a perfect eighth inning in his New York debut, two days after being acquired from Baltimore for three pitching prospects. There was a strange sighting, too. As Neil Walker batted with two outs in the Yankees seventh, several thousand fans in the sellout crowd suddenly switched on their cell phone lights and shined them toward the field. There was no instant explanation. Junis (5-11) is 0-8 in 10 starts since beating the Yankees in mid-May. He has allowed a major league-high 25 home runs, and the drive by Gregorius made it 6-0 in the fourth. Gregorius homered one pitch after shortstop Adalberto Mondesi bounced a throw to first on a routine grounder with two outs. As Gregorius rounded the bases, Mondesi took off his glove and wandered into shallow center field. Salvador Perez hit a two-run homer in the Royals sixth off Adam Warren. TRAINER’S ROOM Yankees: Rookie RHP Domingo German, who made 13 starts for the Yankees before being sent to Triple-A last week, left a start for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre after one inning with what New York GM Brian Cashman said was biceps tendinitis. UP NEXT Royals: Rookie RHP Brad Keller (3-4, 3.20 ERA) starts on his 23rd birthday. He pitched a perfect inning in relief against the Yankees in mid-May. Yankees: LHP CC Sabathia (6-4, 3.51) will start on 12 days’ rest. A rainout and the All-Star break resulted in the long break. He’ll pitch on his bobblehead night in the Bronx. New Jersey Attorney General Responds After NJ Radio Hosts’ ‘Turban Man’ Comments
TRENTON, N.J. (AP/CBS) – The nation’s first Sikh-American attorney general is responding after two New Jersey radio hosts repeatedly referred to him as “turban man.” Gurbir Grewal tweeted on Thursday that he’s the 61st attorney general of New Jersey. He wrote: “I’m a Sikh American. I have 3 daughters. And yesterday, I told them to turn off the radio.” . @nj1015 : My name, for the record, is Gurbir Grewal. I’m the 61st Attorney General of NJ. I’m a Sikh American. I have 3 daughters. And yesterday, I told them to turn off the radio. — Gurbir S. Grewal (@GurbirGrewalNJ) July 26, 2018 WKXW-FM hosts Dennis Malloy and Judi Franco made the comments Wednesday while discussing Grewal’s recent order to suspend marijuana prosecutions in the state, reports CBS Philly.com . Malloy reportedly said he couldn’t remember Grewal’s name — and told Franco “I’m just going to say the guy with the turban.” The pair continued to call Grewal “Turban Man” throughout the segment. Malloy and Franco acknowledged their words might be offensive, but Malloy said “if that offends you then don’t wear the turban and maybe I’ll remember your name.” On Thursday evening, the station — known as New Jersey 101.5 — said it suspended the veteran hosts for 10 days. Malloy and Franco issued a written apology to Attorney General Gurbir Grewal and the Sikh and East Asian communities, writing they are “deeply sorry” for the pain they caused. The station released the following statement: “We offer our sincerest apologies to Attorney General Gurbir Grewal as well as the Sikh and Asian communities for a series of insensitive comments we made on our show. For 21 years, the Dennis and Judi show has been unscripted and free form. We use humor and sarcasm to make a point and add color to the broadcast; in this instance, we were off the mark. It was a mistake we both deeply regret. We respect all cultures and beliefs and are deeply sorry for the pain caused to the Sikh community, our co-workers and our beloved listeners. We take these comments seriously and echo Dennis and Judi’s sincere apology to Attorney General Grewal and his family, as well as the Sikh and Asian communities. Dennis and Judi are known for their plainspoken brand of humor, but in this case, the language used was clearly demeaning and inappropriate. New Jersey is a state that is rich in diversity, and our radio station has served as the people’s voice for nearly 30 years. With Dennis and Judi’s help, we will use this incident as a learning moment to further a dialogue of inclusiveness for all residents of our great state.” (© Copyright 2018 CBS Broadcasting Inc.
