Seattle, Wash. (CBS Local/AP) — Starbucks says it will eliminate plastic straws from its stores globally by 2020, a nod to the growing push for businesses to be more environmentally friendly. The company will become the largest food and beverage company operating globally to ban plastic straws from all of its stores. The Seattle-based company said Monday it will instead use straws made from other materials, and lids designed not to need straws. McDonald’s also recently said it would switch to paper straws in the United Kingdom and Ireland by next year, and test alternatives to plastic straws in some U.S. locations. Environmental activists have been pressuring businesses to ditch plastic straws because they can end up in the ocean and hurt marine life. The push gained traction after a viral video in 2015 showed rescuers removing a straw from a sea turtle’s nose in graphic detail. Local governments have also been looking at the issue. Last week, Seattle’s ban on single-use plastic straws and utensils in food service outlets took effect, and Starbucks says it already offers alternative straws there. Similar proposals are being considered elsewhere, including New York and San Francisco. Starbucks said Monday that it is making available a strawless lid at 8,000 stores in the U.S. and Canada for certain drinks. Starbucks Coffee Co. estimates the switch will eliminate more than 1 billion plastic straws a year. Starbucks said cold beverages in which a straw is typically included make up 50 percent of the drinks its sells, up from just 37 percent five years ago. While straws have become a high-profile issue, they make up only about 4 percent of the plastic trash by number of pieces, and far less by weight. Straws add up to only about 2,000 tons of the nearly 9 million tons of plastic waste that hits waters a year. Still, those who support limiting plastic straws say they are generally unnecessary and a ban is good symbol. ( © Copyright 2018 The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved. SANTA BARBARA (CBSLA) — Onetime teen heartthrob Tab Hunter, who starred in films like “Damn Yankees!” and “The Burning Hills,” who later became a gay icon has died. He was 86 years old. Hunter, who was known in Hollywood as “The Sigh Guy” for his blond, surfer-boy looks, died Sunday night at his home in Santa Barbara County. He died of a blood clot, his spouse, film producer Allan Glaser, said. Hunter was born on July 11, 1031 as Arthur Kelm in New York City, but grew up in California with his mother, brother and maternal grandparents. He starred in more than 40 films, and was a big name in the 50s and 60s. He continued to work into his 70s as a film producer, and his recording of the song “Young Love” topped the Billboard pop chart in 1957. After decades of silence, Hunter confirmed long-standing rumors about his homosexuality in his autobiography, Tab Hunter Confidential: The Making of a Movie Star, published in 2005. Hunter said he had been told by his longtime romantic partner Glaser that someone was planning to write a book about him, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “I thought, ‘Look, get it from the horse’s mouth and not from some horse’s ass after I’m dead and gone,’” he told the Reporter in 2015. “I didn’t want someone putting a spin on my life.” Writing the book was difficult, he told The Associated Press in 2005, “because I’m a really private person. I grew up full of denial. I just didn’t like any suggestions or questioning of my sexuality.” (© Copyright 2018 CBS Broadcasting Inc. All Rights Reserved. Ryan Mayer Professional baseball players are used to sitting through their fair share of delayed games during the course of the season. In most cases, those delays are due to weather related incidents. That wasn’t the case for Sunday’s Double-A contest between the Corpus Christi Hooks and Northwest Arkansas Naturals. Instead, the teams were forced to wait out an 85-minute delay caused by a swarm of bees taking over the home dugout. Carmen Benedetti, an outfielder for the Hooks, posted video of the swarm on Twitter. Bees wanted a front row seat to the game today @MiLB pic.twitter.com/UoXTz4jrsi — Carmen Benedetti (@Carmatron32) July 8, 2018 Benedetti spoke to MiLB.com after the game and seemed pretty unfazed by the entire situation. “Just another day in the life of a Minor Leaguer,” the 23-year-old said. “Heck, it’s not just down here, either. There have been instances with bugs swarming big league ballparks, too. But the bees are something new. We were all so surprised by it. The mosquitoes really started coming out a few days ago, but I don’t think I’ve seen a bee down here all year. They called the exterminator to take care of it.” The teams were able to eventually take to the field once the bees had been cleared from the dugout and of course, the team’s official Twitter account had some fun with the situation. The Hooks buzzed the Naturals for a 9-2 win on Sunday evening. Last year, the Kansas City Royals and Cleveland Indians had a game delayed because bees had taken over the upper deck of the stadium.
