WASHINGTON (CBSLA) — President Trump on Monday selected 53-year-old Brett Kavanaugh to replace Anthony Kennedy on the Supreme Court. The president made the announcement in the East Room of the White House. Protests were held around the nation as liberals, democrats and progressives fear the president’s right-leaning pick will give conservatives a majority for decades to come. Why did Kavanaugh get the nod? He has extensive experience working in D.C. courts and its political scene, officials said. He once served as a clerk under Justice Kennedy. Last year, Trump picked Neil Gorsuch to replace the late Antonin Scalia. Kavanaugh shook Trump’s hand and then took to the podium. He said, “Mr. President, thank you. Throughout this process, I’ve witnessed first hand your appreciation for the vital role of the American judiciary. No president has ever consulted more or widely or talked to more people from more backgrounds to seek input about a Supreme Court nomination.” Establishment republicans lauded the selection. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who blocked President Obama from seating Merrick Garland, called the Kavanaugh pick “a superb” choice. Democrats were quick to express their displeasure and outrage. GLAAD, the world’s largest LGBTQ media advocacy organization, condemned the choice. “Kavanaugh’s extreme conservative record and his past support by anti-LGBTQ hate group Family Resource Council (FRC) are deeply concerning. Kavanaugh could carry out the expressed views of President Trump, who as a candidate stated that he disagreed with the Supreme Court’s gay marriage ruling in the case of Obergefell v. Hodges and said he would ‘strongly consider’ appointing judges who would overturn the decision,” GLAAD said. Cong. Adam Schiff pointed out the president picked someone who doesn’t believe the president should be subject to criminal investigations. Ever mindful of his self-interest, Trump has picked Brett Kavanaugh, who once wrote that he didn’t believe a sitting President should be subject to criminal investigation or prosecution. Kavanaugh could be deciding vote on legal challenges to the Mueller investigation. pic.twitter.com/1b28UHharc — Adam Schiff (@RepAdamSchiff) July 10, 2018 California Senator Kamala Harris announced she is already team #NoKavanaugh. “Judge Brett Kavanaugh represents a direct and fundamental threat to that promise of equality and so I will oppose his nomination to the Supreme Court. Specifically, as a replacement for Justice Anthony Kennedy, his nomination presents an existential threat to the health care of hundreds of millions of Americans.” She added, “Judge Kavanaugh has consistently proven to be a conservative ideologue instead of a mainstream jurist. As recently as last year, he disregarded Supreme Court precedent and opposed the health care rights of a vulnerable young woman. That ruling was overturned by a sitting of all the judges on his court. In 2015, Kavanaugh wrote that an employer, based on their personal beliefs, can deny their employee access to birth control coverage.” Sen. Chuck Schumer, from New York, clearly also not a fan of the appointee. I will oppose Judge Kavanaugh’s nomination with everything I have, and I hope a bipartisan majority will do the same. The stakes are simply too high for anything less. Magic Johnson, the Lakers’ president of basketball operations, called James “the best player in the world” in a news release. “The Lakers players are excited to have a teammate who has been to nine NBA Finals. It’s a huge step closer to returning the Lakers to the playoffs and to the NBA Finals,” said Johnson. (© Copyright 2018 CBS Broadcasting Inc. All Rights Reserved. LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — The mother of a little boy allegedly abandoned at Union Station in downtown Los Angeles on the Fourth of July has pleaded not guilty to a felony charge. Dava Denise Webster, 31, of Walnut Creek has been charged with one count of felony child endangerment, the L.A. County District Attorney said Monday. Webster allegedly abandoned her son at the train depot the evening of the Independence Day holiday. Her 6-year-old son was found after Webster was reportedly confronted by a witness and a security guard before police were called. Police initially believed the boy was deaf, as he did not respond verbally. Prosecutors are recommending a bail amount of $100,000 for Webster. If convicted, she faces up to six years in state prison.

NEW YORK (AP) — Aaron Nola allowed one hit in seven shutout innings and lashed a three-run double that sent the Philadelphia Phillies past the New York Mets 3-1 on Monday for a split of their twinight doubleheader. One night after being named to his first All-Star team, Nola (12-2) struck out 10 and won his sixth straight decision to become the only 12-game winner in the National League. With his teammates scuffling at the plate, he took care of the offense himself by doubling his career RBI total in the fifth. In the opener, Wilmer Flores connected for a pinch-hit homer in the bottom of the 10th to give New York a 4-3 victory. The teams combined for just four hits in the nightcap, two by Flores. After Flores’ RBI double off Tommy Hunter with two outs in the ninth, Victor Arano struck out pinch-hitter Devin Mesoraco with runners at the corners for his third save. Arano served up Flores’ decisive homer in the first game. Philadelphia, which began the day barely leading the NL East over Atlanta, won for the ninth time in 12 games. New York has lost 18 of its past 22 home games. Mets rookie starter Corey Oswalt (0-2) retired his first 12 batters, striking out six, before running into trouble in the fifth. He issued consecutive walks on full-count pitches to begin the inning, then got two outs before Maikel Franco was intentionally walked to load the bases. Nola lined the next pitch the other way down the right-field line for his second career extra-base hit, giving him six RBIs in the majors. Before that swing, he was 2 for 35 at the plate this year and an .066 lifetime hitter in the big leagues. On the mound, the right-hander matched his major league high for wins. He reached double digits in strikeouts for the sixth time in his career and fourth this season. He hasn’t lost since May 20 at St. Louis. After a two-out single by Flores in the first, Nola retired 18 consecutive batters before Michael Conforto walked in the seventh. Those were the only two baserunners to reach against Nola, the lone All-Star selected from the Phillies. The opener was a makeup of an April 2 game postponed by snow. Flores led off the 10th and nearly reached safely on a hit by pitch. In fact, he contended the ball grazed his arm and he started toward first base. When plate umpire Tom Hallion called ball three, Flores motioned toward the New York dugout to request a replay review. “It did hit him. We saw it on the replay and then I just talked to him,” Mets starter Zack Wheeler said with a chuckle. “Glad they didn’t overturn it.” The ruling stood following the review — but Flores did one better. He drove the next delivery from Arano (1-1) off the left-field foul pole for his fourth career game-ending homer and second this season. That gave Flores four of New York’s five walk-off RBIs this year and 10 in his career, three more than anyone else in the majors since 2014 and one better than David Wright for the most in Mets history. Flores’ four game-ending homers are tied for the team record. Smiling teammates hopped over the dugout railing and swarmed Flores at home plate after his fifth career pinch-hit homer, second this year. And with that one, Wilmer walked ’em off again. “It’s almost getting to the point where you expect it,” Wheeler said. “I know when the game’s on the line, that’s the guy you want to have up there.” Flores started at second base and batted third in the nightcap. Asdrubal Cabrera also homered for New York in the opener and hit an RBI double off the top of the right-center fence. Franco homered and Nick Williams had three hits for the Phillies, who stranded 12 and went 2 for 13 with runners in scoring position. “We didn’t get the big hit in the big moment,” manager Gabe Kapler said. “We’ve had that happen from time to time.” Tim Peterson (2-1) pitched out of trouble in the 10th, and Robert Gsellman escaped a big jam in the eighth for the Mets. Despite pitching pretty well lately, Wheeler is 0-5 in 13 starts since his last win April 29 at San Diego. That’s the longest stretch without a victory for a Mets starter since 1998. Phillies right-hander Zach Eflin gave up three runs in five innings. He was 6-0 with a 1.91 ERA in his previous six starts. TRAINER’S ROOM Phillies: RHP Vince Velasquez (bruised right forearm) is expected back from the disabled list to pitch Wednesday night against All-Star ace Jacob deGrom in the finale of the four-game series. … RHP Luis Garcia (strained right wrist) is getting “really close” to returning, Kapler said. Mets: 3B Todd Frazier was placed on the 10-day DL with a strained muscle in his left rib cage. … The team is optimistic RHP Noah Syndergaard will rejoin the rotation this weekend against Washington, manager Mickey Callaway said. Syndergaard has been sidelined since late May with a strained ligament in his right index finger. … LHP Jason Vargas (strained right calf) allowed one hit over six shutout innings in a rehab outing for Class A Brooklyn. He struck out nine, walked none and threw 49 of 64 pitches for strikes. Vargas also could return to the big league rotation this weekend. ROSTER MOVES Philadelphia recalled LHP Hoby Milner from Lehigh Valley and added RHP Jake Thompson as the 26th man for the doubleheader. … Between games, the Mets reinstated LHP Jerry Blevins from the bereavement list and designated RHP Chris Beck for assignment. UP NEXT Two starting pitchers making their major league debuts Tuesday night. Philadelphia is likely to call up 22-year-old RHP Enyel De Los Santos from Triple-A Lehigh Valley, where he is 9-3 with a 1.89 ERA in 16 starts. New York plans to call up 28-year-old RHP Drew Gagnon from Triple-A Las Vegas, where he is 1-4 with a 4.67 ERA in 17 starts. Gagnon expects to have his parents, fiancee and three sisters in the crowd. (© Copyright 2018 The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved. Nola Leads Phillies Over Mets For Doubleheader Split
BALTIMORE (AP) — Brett Gardner had four hits, homered and drove in three runs to help the New York Yankees beat the Baltimore Orioles 10-2 Monday night for a doubleheader split. In the opener, Danny Valencia snapped an 0-for-25 skid with a three-run homer off CC Sabathia, and Baltimore ended a six-game losing streak with a 5-4 victory. The split left the Yankees a 4-4 record against Baltimore and dropped them 2½ games behind first-place Boston in the AL East. The first game ended with Gardner grounding out as a pinch hitter with the potential tying run on third base. He returned in the nightcap to torment the Orioles at the plate and in center field, where he made several fine, running catches. Gardner led off with a single off Jefry Ramirez (0-3) and scored on a double by Didi Gregorius. In the fourth, Gardner hit his seventh homer, a two-run drive that made it 3-0. That was enough offense for Luis Cessa (1-1), who allowed three hits over six shutout innings. A four-run eighth —highlighted by Austin Romine’s two-run homer and an RBI double by Gardner — ended any doubt. Despite allowing a home run to Tim Beckham, Giovanny Gallegos finished for his first major league save. New York had a season-high 17 hits, at least one from every starter. In the first game, Baltimore trailed 4-2 in the sixth when Sabathia (6-4) walked Mark Trumbo and yielded a double to Jonathan Schoop. With the New York bullpen buzzing in an effort to get a reliever ready, Sabathia served up a 2-1 pitch that Valencia drove far over the center-field wall. “To come through big with the home run there to put us ahead, it feels nice. Can’t deny that,” Valencia said. It would be the final pitch for Sabathia, who allowed five runs and seven hits in five-plus innings. The 37-year-old lefty is winless in nine starts against the Orioles since May 4, 2016. Mike Wright (2-0) struck out four in two innings of relief, Mychal Givens fanned two in the eighth and Zach Britton followed for his second save. Recalled from Triple-A Norfolk to be the 26th man for Baltimore in the doubleheader, Jimmy Yacabonis allowed three runs over five innings in his second major league start. Giancarlo Stanton put the Yankees up 1-0 with his 22nd home run in the second inning. It was 3-0 before Manny Machado doubled and Trumbo connected in the fourth. The game was a makeup of a rainout on May 31. TRAINER’S ROOM Yankees: All-Star reliever Aroldis Chapman (knee tendinitis) left Saturday’s game against Toronto with a trainer by his side, but manager Aaron Boone says there has been no discussion about putting the lefty on the DL and that the injury has not impacted his effectiveness. … C Gary Sanchez (groin) is scheduled to take batting practice on Tuesday in Baltimore, and a decision on the start of his rehab assignment will be made this weekend. Orioles: Reliever Darren O’Day will undergo surgery Thursday to repair a severe hamstring strain. “I’ve come to terms with my season being over. I’m excited to get the surgery and kind of get focused on going forward,” O’Day said. … RHP Chris Tillman (back) has been dealing with a callus on his pitching hand but remains on schedule to make his next rehab start. UP AND DOWN After going 0 for 4 in the opener of the doubleheader, INF Brandon Drury was optioned by the Yankees to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to make room on the roster for Cessa. NO TEARS, PLEASE Dellin Betances is one of the game’s hottest relievers, but his run of four All-Star appearances in four big league seasons is over. If the right-hander was dismayed over the slight, he didn’t show it. “Every year a lot of guys are left out. Last year I probably didn’t deserve to get in,” he said. Betances started the week with a run of 18 straight scoreless appearances. Asked about being idle during the All-Star break for the first time, he replied, “It’ll be weird. But I’ll enjoy those four days.” UP NEXT Yankees: Masahiro Tanaka (7-2, 4.58 ERA) comes off the DL to start Tuesday night in the third game of the series. Both hamstrings were strained. Orioles: Andrew Cashner (2-9, 4.39) takes his eighth crack at getting his third win of the year. (© Copyright 2018 The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved. PASADENA (CBSLA) — A Pasadena couple cried uncle when thousands — maybe hundreds of thousands — of ants showed up. “All of sudden there just were ants everywhere,” said Heidi VanKooten, the Pasadena homeowner. CBS2’s Greg Mills talked to the VanKootens about their ordeal, one that finally had them call an exterminator when home remedies proved no match for the colony. The heat apparently caused the ants to look for a cooler place. “With the heat that we’ve had, the calls increase,” says exterminator Jesse Sheeran. Sheeran told Mills the ants have become a problem all over. He says he got rid of ants a few blocks from the VanKootens and then they called. Just yesterday, the couple says they found ants in their pantry. “We had ants along the baseboard here. Coming in I think from outside,” says Bryce VanKooten. “The colonies are just exploding right now when the heat comes out. It energizes these guys to go find new territory,” Sheeran says. He explained to the VanKootens that as he takes care of the colony outside, they won’t be a problem inside. Within five days he guarantees they will all be gone. They can’t wait. Starting yesterday, they said they were finding ants — too many ants — all everywhere. And because it was Sunday, they said they really couldn’t call anyone. They tried home remedies first. “The Windex works for about 12 hours. That’s what we killed them with,” says Heidi. “We tried the vinegar and water effect and it didn’t really work that well. We just got vinegar all over our floors,” says Bryce. That’s when Sheeran finally brought out the real firepower. But just like relatives who drop in unannounced, Sheeran says the little pests will possibly return. And so will he — when temperatures sizzle next summer. Mills said he talked to at least three neighbors who said they were experiencing similar ant infestations.

SEA GIRT, N.J. (CBSNewYork) — Lifeguards up and down the Jersey Shore were on alert Monday, trying to keep swimmers safe after rip currents were reported over the weekend. With a storm along the Atlantic coast, the situation was expected to get even more dangerous. The combination of sand bars and rip currents had them on high alert in Lavalette. “For little kids, they’ve been getting pulled out a little harder,” lifeguard Eric Samaniego said. “We try to keep them up to their knees to keep them a little safer.” The terrain is constantly shifting with increased wave activity. One second you’re knee deep, the next you’re in over your head. “Yesterday during high tide you could feel it hitting the back of your calves trying to rip you out there,” swimmer Kevin Burke said. Beaches in Lavalette were open Monday, with lifeguards keeping swimmers closer to shore and in a smaller area. 12 miles north in Sea Girt, chief of lifeguards Tim Harmon says his squad made more than 50 rescues over the weekend. The most important thing if you get caught in a rip current, says Harmon, is staying calm. “Put your hand up, call for help,” Harmon said. As a reminder, Harmon says to always swim with a buddy and in front of a lifeguard. Steer clear of the rock jetties where rip currents are most likely to form.
