RIVERSIDE (CBSLA) — Four of a woman’s five show horses have died in the past six months. Koreen Greenberg says when she brought her land in Riverside County 15 years ago, it was the perfect place for her Friesian show horses. “It was sanctuary, it used to be all orange groves. When I purchased the house there were only three homes on this street, and it was a little dirt road,” Greenberg says. She told KCAL9’s Tina Patel she knew development was inevitable but she didn’t expect tracts of homes to be build so close to her property line and she didn’t anticipate the hillsides would be completely re-graded. “Building a home next door would have been no problem, not an issue with that. I would have liked to been forewarned that they were going to change the elevation and the type of equipment that was going to be brought in, so I could have removed the horses from the premises,” she says. Her vet tech believes the constant constructionn noise and vibration stressed out the horses and made them too weak to move. Four of her five horses died in the past six months. “We tried, we tried everything from putting them on preventative medication, by putting visual blocks, by stuffing the ears with cotton,” Greenberg says. “The last one, we just lost last week. He was a five-time world champion. The one prior to that, 22 world titles.” Greenberg wishes developers had communicated with her better and she wishes they had more consideration for homeowners like herself. With Louis being the lone survivor, all she can do is try to keep him safe. “As soon as his stomach is okay,” Greenberg says, “we’re going to transport him out. and hopefully the final phase will be done.” Patel reached out to the developers — D. R. Horton — but wasn’t able to find out if they were aware of the situation with Greenberg. She told Patel she knows nothing will bring her horses back but hopes in the future there will be more cooperation between developers and homeowners already living in the neighborhood.

(WESTWOOD) — A widowed mother of four has been battling an illness for years, but a stranger has come forward who could possibly save her life. “Two years ago, both of my kidneys failed, and I’ve been on dialysis since,” 47-year-old Natalie De of Santa Clarita told CBS2 News. She was diagnosed with polycystic kidney disease 11 years ago, a disease which claimed her father’s life. Natalie, however, was determined to fight the illness. “The prognosis was very, very difficult for me to comprehend, but I have four little children, and it was like a move that I had to make to make sure that I’m able to be here and care for my sons,” the widow said. Enter Terri Miller. “I think it was almost immediate that I just felt like I wanted to reach out and try to help her,” Miller said. She’s a technician in the pathology department at Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital near Santa Clarita, where she said helping people comes naturally to her. Miller found out about De’s situation through social media and wanted to lend a hand — or give a kidney, in this case. “God put it on my heart to do it, and I just — just helping another human being,” said the good Samaritan. “She has four children, and she’s a single mom, and it just felt like the right thing to do.” Miller went through a series of tests to find out if she was match for De’s transplant. Two months later, they found out she was. The surgery is slated for a few weeks from now, but the two former strangers are now family. “Thank you, from the bottom of my heart about what you’re doing here,” De told Miller Monday as the women held hands. “You’re very welcome,” replied Miller. “Thank you for being so selfless and giving,” De continued. “It’s an honor for me to be able to help you and your family, so I’m very glad that I’m able to do it,” Miller responded. They said they hope their story of hope will bring awareness to the need for organ donors. “You can be a living donor, and I’m gonna be able to go on with the rest of my life perfectly normal, and she will, too,” said Miller.

NORTH HILLS (CBSLA) — A family is in mourning after a mother and grandmother who worked as a mail carrier died during the heat wave that hit Southern California over the weekend. The Los Angeles County Coroner said Peggy Frank, 63, was found unresponsive in her mail truck Friday afternoon in the Woodland Hills area, where temperatures reached 117 degrees. “To have my mom 107 [degrees], humidity, carrying the mailbag around with no air conditioning in the car — yeah, I’m sure she’s probably gonna overheat,” Frank’s son Kirk Kessler told CBS2 News. After multiple attempts by paramedics to revive her, Frank was pronounced dead. She had been with the U.S. Postal Service for 30 years and was just a few years away from retirement. Residents in the area saw the activity of emergency crews but had no idea what was happening. “She was very nice,” said one man who was driving by the area Monday afternoon. “Now her face is coming […] in front of me, honestly, because I talked to her, and it becomes personal.” Frank is survived by her two children and several grandchildren. “She’s great, friendly, sensitive, always there for ya’,” said Kessler. The coroner said it’s not yet clear if the heat was the cause of her death. She had recently returned to work after having been off the job for more than two months with a broken ankle. USPS would not go into details about Frank’s death but said their thoughts and prayers were with the family. In Hemet over the weekend, an elderly couple was found dead inside their RV. Their air conditioner was not on when they were found.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Clayton Kershaw pitched six shutout innings, and Cody Bellinger and Justin Turner each had three hits as the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the San Diego Padres 8-2 on Monday night. Kershaw (3-4) improved his career mark to 18-6 against the Padres as the Dodgers moved a half-game behind the idle Arizona Diamondbacks for the National League West lead. Los Angeles won for the 33rd time in 48 contests. Luis Perdomo (1-3) gave up six runs, 10 hits and three walks — one intentional — over seven innings in his second start since being recalled from Triple-A El Paso. The Padres were handcuffed by Kershaw as they managed but a pair of singles and a walk against the Dodgers’ ace. Kershaw was sharp from the onset, recording his five strikeouts in the first four innings. San Diego never had two baserunners aboard in the same inning and had just one in scoring position during his outing. The Padres, who got a home run from Wil Myers in the ninth, lost for the sixth time in eight games. It was Myers’ fifth homer in three games. Kershaw, who has had two stints on the disabled list this year, won his second straight start in throwing 89 pitches, his most since May 1. Monday’s impressive outing gave Kershaw his first road win of the season and came on the heels of him tossing six innings in a win over the Pirates. The Dodgers broke the game open in the fourth inning, scoring five runs after sending eight batters to the plate. Bellinger opened with an opposite-field double, Matt Kemp walked and Yasmani Grandal hit a double to drive in Bellinger. Chris Taylor’s RBI single made it 2-0 and Andrew Toles stroked a two-run double off the base of the left-field fence. Toles, called up from Triple-A Oklahoma City before the game with Yasiel Puig (oblique) going on the disabled list, scored from third on Joc Pederson’s grounder to stalk Kershaw to a 5-0 lead Perdomo wiggled from a jam in the second as the Dodgers had two singles, a double and a walk. But Kemp hit into a double play and Kershaw grounded out to end the threat. TRAINER’S ROOM Dodgers: RF Puig (right oblique) was placed on the 10-day disabled list. Manager Dave Roberts said Puig will be out for an extended period of time. Padres: RHP Jordan Lyles (right elbow) threw a bullpen session on Sunday and is slated for another one on Wednesday. UP NEXT Dodgers: LHP Rich Hill (2-3), who is coming off a win over the Pirates, starts the middle game of the four-game series. Hill has a career mark of 4-3 with a 3.18 ERA in eight starts against the Padres. Padres: LHP Eric Lauer (4-5) has settled down after a rocking April-May in which he posted a 7.67 ERA in seven starts. Over six outings in June, Lauer had a 2.76 ERA. Lauer threw six scoreless innings and earned his first career win when beating the Dodgers on May 6. (@Copyright 2018. The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved. NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — New Yorkers were on edge Monday after a string of random crimes throughout the city. One of the most violent was an attack on the subway in Lower Manhattan, where a man was caught on camera viciously beating another passenger with a metal object. The 59-year-old victim’s skull was fractured and the suspect has since been arrested, but the NYPD maintains there’s no crime wave. In fact, the department insists crime is actually down. “These are a couple of individual acts of violence that happened,” NYPD Chief of Department Terrence Monahan said in an exclusive interview with CBS2 political reporter Marcia Kramer. “If you look at each of the three instances we were able to respond quickly and make arrests.” NYU junior Cat Heinen says being violently ambushed and beaten by a homeless man in the East Village late Saturday has left her scared and shaken. “I don’t think I can walk alone for a long time,” she told CBS2. “I’ve been walking with my keys in hand.” Heinen also says she’s bought pepper spray after the terrifying ordeal. While the NYPD was quick to catch the man who attacked Cat and two other women, she says the experience has changed her life. “This has been really traumatic and awful,” she said. “He got me right to the ground and kept punching, I’m pretty sure he was going to rape me.” She’s just the latest victim in a recent string of random crimes. In addition to the East Village assault and Lower Manhattan subway attack, police say a man tried to rape a woman getting out of an Uber on the Upper West Side last week. The NYPD insists that there’s no crime wave. Statistics for the first six months of the year show overall crime is down another 1.8 percent, from 46,190 to 45,337. While overall stats continue to be low, one problem area is rapes. Statistics show rapes are up 34 percent; 912 from the first six months of 2018 compared to 680 in 2017. In terms of the random crimes seen recently, what is the city doing to assure people they’re safe? “Listen, this is a city of 8.6 million people, there are going to be incidents that happen,” Monahan said. “The NYPD is the best at keeping people safe and we’re out there. If there are some individualized acts of violent crime that take place, rest assured we’re going to go after the small amount of individuals that perpetuate them.” In this era of social media, Monahan urges New Yorkers who see crimes to take pictures and share them with cops to help solve crimes like the subway attack quicker. The NYPD will have extra officers on the streets this summer. 300 will be part of “Operation All Out,” and 750 just graduated from the police academy.
