Former LAPD Cadets Who Stole Cruisers For Joyrides To Face Criminal Charges, Sources Say

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — The cadets whose antics kicked off an investigation into alleged sexual abuse by a Los Angeles police officer will be criminally charged, according to sources. Three of the seven former cadets accused of stealing two police cruisers and taking them on joyrides in June 2017 will be charged, two sources who wished to remain anonymous told the LA Times . The L.A. County District Attorney’s office would not confirm the pending charges to the Times, saying it was due to matters of confidentiality regarding minors. Prosecutors are reviewing possible felony charges against Leonel Flores, 20, the only adult cadet, the Times reported. The recruits made headlines nationally after they led police on two pursuits that both ended in crashes on June 15, 2017. An investigation into the youths revealed a 15-year-old female cadet involved in the thefts had allegedly had a sexual relationship with LAPD Officer Robert Cain. Former Chief Charlie Beck personally arrested Cain , then 31, days after the joyriding incidents. Cain pleaded not guilty to charges of unlawful sexual intercourse, oral copulation involving a person under 16 and committing lewd acts on a child. The 10-year LAPD veteran is currently serving two years in county jail for an unrelated weapons charge . Luis Carrillo, an attorney for the girl, confirmed to CBS2 some cadets would be criminally charged. Cain is due in court next month.

Family Of Man Convicted In OC Murder Believes Golden State Killer Likely Responsible

SANTA ANA (CBSLA) – An attorney for the family of a man found guilty in the 1979 rape and murder of a Fountain Valley mother is arguing that the suspected Golden State Killer may in fact be responsible for the killing, and that his client, who has since passed away, was wrongly convicted. (Getty Images) William Lee Evins died in prison of a heart attack in 2013, but his family still wishes to clear his name, attorney Annee Della Donna said. Donna believes the March 7, 1979, murder of 28-year-old Joan Virginia Anderson, a mother of three, has eerie similarities to the M.O. of the Golden State Killer, Joseph DeAngelo, who was arrested in April and is jailed in Sacramento,  awaiting trial and is facing 12 murder charges in Sacramento, Santa Barbara, Orange and Ventura counties. “The facts are just unbelievably similar” to the Golden State Killer’s M.O.,” Donna said. “It’s striking how similar they are to every other murder and rape he did.” DeAngelo is also a suspect in more than 50 rapes and more than 100 burglaries across the state dating back to 1974. In Orange County, DeAngelo is charged with the 1980 killings of Keith and Patrice Harrington in Dana Point, the 1981 killing of Manuela Witthuhn in Irvine, and the 1986 killing of Janelle Cruz in Irvine. The District Attorney’s Office has agreed to review Evins’ case and check DeAngelo’s DNA to see if he is connected to Anderson’s murder, Donna said. According to the Los Angeles Times, Evins, a contractor, was working on an addition to the Anderson home at the time of Joan’s murder. He was not arrested until 17 months later, in Texas, when an acquaintance told investigators that Evins had confessed to the murder, the Times reports. “It was a perfect setup to blame one of the contractors,” Donna claims. That acquaintance, Randy Wanner, was hypnotized by police during a preliminary hearing to help him recall details, the Times reports. Evins’ attorneys appealed, and the state Supreme Court ruled in 1984 that the hypnotism was improper evidence. “He was going to be released, he had his bags packed to go home to his wife and two children and suddenly a jail informant was in his cell,” Donna said. That prolific snitch, James Dean Cochrum, proved controversial as well as he had also testified in four other cases. Cochrum testified Evins confessed to him, so Evins was ordered to stand trial. At this point, Evins had spent five years in a jail awaiting trial. However, he took a plea deal, pleading guilty to second-degree murder, and was sentenced to 15 years to life in prison. Over 200 Women Now Suing USC, Accusing Gynecologist George Tyndall Of Sexual Assault, Misconduct

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — Fifty-one more women have come out to speak publicly against former University of Southern California health center gynecologist George Tyndall, bringing the number of accusers suing the school to over 200. The women addressed reporters at a Monday press conference, detailing the disturbing behavior that time and time again was reportedly defended by staff members at the Engemann Student Health Center. Former USC student Amanda Davis recalled a 2000 visit, during which Tyndall took photos of her and claimed they were for research purposes. “I have a vivid image of being naked while Dr. Tyndall took pictures and the shame and the emotions that go with it,” Davis said, reading a prepared statement. Numerous women have stated Tyndall watched them undress and proceeded to violate them during pelvic exams. “I don’t recall him putting gloves on, and he did not do a standard gynecological exam. It felt more like I was being molested by an unwanted sexual predator,” said Annette Richardson. Richardson said she told staff at the center, including a nurse, about her mistreatment. “She said, ‘That’s just how Dr. Tyndall is,’” recalled Richardson. It’s a claim USC is finding harder and harder to defend as women accuse the school and the clinic of trying to cover up the abuse. Tyndall, 71, has denied any wrongdoing, saying he never examined a woman without gloves in interviews with the L.A. Times, which broke the story back in May . During their investigation, the Times found that, in addition to the alleged sexual impropriety, Tyndall made racially insensitive remarks and comments about the women’s appearance. USC terminated Tyndall’s employment in June 2017, about a year after USC’s Office of Equity and Diversity launched an investigation into his alleged behavior. Following the Times’ revelations, two top USC health officials were fired . USC President Max Nikias stepped down after over 200 faculty members signed a letter demanding his ouster. According to the Times , 225 current and former students are now suing USC. This is the latest scandal USC has been dealing with in the past few years. Carmen Puliafito stepped down as dean of the USC Keck School of Medicine in 2016 after it was revealed he had partied with underage girls and provided drugs to his girlfriend, who was a prostitute. Just last week, the California medical board ordered Puliafito be stripped of his license to practice medicine,  the Times reported . Another scandal involved a USC graduate student accusing social work professor Erick Guerrero of sexually harassing her at an academic conference. Guerrero was suspended without pay in 2017 and was prohibited from working with doctoral students for three years.

LA Times Restaurant Critic Jonathan Gold Dies At 57

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA)  —  LA Times Restaurant Critic Jonathan Gold has died. Gold was 57. The Times said the Pulitzer prize-winning Gold died of pancreatic cancer at St. Vincent Medical Center Saturday evening.  Gold was the first-ever food writer to win the Pulitzer. Gold  — born and raised in Los Angeles — was diagnosed with the disease in early July. Jonathan Gold, the Pulitzer Prize-winning LA Times restaurant critic, has died at the age of 57. And unlike some critics who would only dine in snooty, upscale restaurants worthy of top chefs, Gold had a penchant for the off-beat, hidden gems and holes in the wall that Angelenos love. Gold was also widely known for dropping continual references in his reviews about music, pop culture and literature. No surprise here — he studied music and art at UCLA. In addition to the LA Times, Gold’s byline also appeared in LA Weekly. The food community is still reeling from the death of foodie Anthony Bourdain. Gold is survived by his wife, LA Times Arts & Entertainment Editor Laurie Ochoa. The couple has two children, a 23-year-old daughter and a 15-year-old son.

Report: Attorney Recorded Trump Discussing Hush Money Payment To Karen McDougal

WASHINGTON (CBS News) – Two months before the November 2016 election, longtime Trump attorney Michael Cohen secretly recorded a conversation with then-candidate Donald Trump about payments to former Playboy model Karen McDougal , the New York Times reported Friday. (Getty Images) McDougal alleges she had a roughly year-long relationship with the real estate mogul in 2006. The Times cited lawyers and others familiar with the recording. That recording, according to the Times, was seized by the FBI when it raided Cohen’s office in April, as a part of federal investigators’ probe into Cohen’s business dealings. The Times says Cohen’s lawyers became aware of the tape when they reviewed evidence collected by investigators, and Cohen’s lawyers shared the recording with Mr. Trump’s lawyers. Justice Department investigators, as CBS News has reported, are interested in payments made to women who claim they had a relationship with Mr. Trump to determine if there were any campaign finance violations. The report of the recorded conversation comes amid questions of whether Cohen will cooperate with federal investigators as a part of special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian election meddling and ties to Trump associates. Cohen, as CBS News’ Jeff Pegues has reported, has been under a great deal of pressure to cooperate. According to Mr. Trump, Cohen is no longer his personal lawyer. McDougal accepted $150,000 from American Media Inc. (AMI), the parent company of tabloids including the National Enquirer. She sold her story with the expectation that she would write for the Enquirer, but AMI didn’t publish the story, a process sometimes called “catch and kill.” CBS News has reached out to the president’s lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, and to Cohen’s lawyer. In a phone conversation with the Times, Giuliani confirmed Mr. Trump had discussed payments with Cohen on the tape, but claimed the payment was ultimately never made. “Nothing in that conversation suggests that he had any knowledge of it in advance,” said Giuliani, who told the Times that Mr. Trump had directed Cohen that if he made a payment related to the woman, he should write a check instead of sending cash to document the transaction. “In the big scheme of things, it’s powerful exculpatory evidence,” Giuliani also told the Times. Payments to women have become a topic the White House and Mr. Trump’s lawyers have had to address in recent months. In May, Giuliani revealed on Fox News that Mr. Trump repaid Cohen for a $130,000 payment Cohen made to adult film star Stormy Daniels ahead of the election in 2016. Giuliani insisted that there was no campaign finance violation in that instance. A White House spokesperson said in a February statement that Mr. Trump denies having had an affair with McDougal. “This is an old story that is just more fake news,” the spokesperson said at the time. “The President says he never had a relationship with McDougal.” © 2018 CBS Interactive Inc. The Baseball Report: Matheny’s Out, deGrom’s Agent Sends Mets A Message

Ryan Mayer The St. Louis Cardinals missed the playoffs just four times between 2000 and 2015, while making the World Series four times and winning twice. The franchise was seen as one of the gold standards in the league and had seemingly undergone a successful transition at manager from Tony LaRussa to Mike Matheny. Well, the last two and a half years haven’t been as kind to the Cardinals, and on Saturday it cost Matheny his job. St. Louis, 48-46, have missed the playoffs each of the last two seasons and enter the All-Star break seven-and-a-half games back of the Cubs in the division race and four games back in the battle for the Wild Card. The franchise hasn’t missed the playoffs in three consecutive seasons since 1997-1999 and clearly, executives thought a change was needed in order to avoid that fate. In addition to the team’s performance on the field, there were incidents off the field, like the situation between closer Bud Norris and reliever Jordan Hicks , that seemed to factor into the decision. Either way, over the course of his six-and-a-half seasons at the helm of the squad, Matheny went 592-474 with a World Series appearance back in 2013, when the Cards lost to the Red Sox in six games. While the Cardinals are looking for a new manager, the New York Mets could be looking for a new ace if they don’t negotiate a new contract with Jacob deGrom. Reports this week indicated that deGrom’s agent had told the team that the 30-year-old righty is interested in locking into a long-term deal to stay in the Big Apple. But, that came with a caveat. deGrom’s agent, Brodie van Wagenen of CAA, told reporters that if the Mets do not share that same interest in a long-term contract, the team should immediately begin looking for a trade. That’s not quite an outright trade request from deGrom, but it’s as close as one can get. In fairness to deGrom, he is certainly out-performing his contract, as through 123 innings pitched this season he’s allowed just 23 earned runs, good for a minuscule 1.68 ERA. He becomes arbitration-eligible after this season, but the team still has two years of control through the arbitration process before he could become a free agent in 2021. Some Women Say Body-Shaming Billboard In Times Square Has Got To Go

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) –  In a city full of electric, eye-catching advertisements, one controversial billboard is turning heads in Times Square. The pink billboard prominently place in one of the tourist capitals of the world says “Got cravings? Girl, tell them to #SuckIt” and features a smiling young woman sucking on a lollipop, which the company Flat Tummy says are supposed to suppress your appetite. Sophie Vershbow, 28, who has struggled with eating disorders in the past, says it’s nothing short of a dangerous diet ad. “It’s so potentially harmful to so many people walking by it, and I felt like we finally needed to take a stand and try and get it taken down,” she told CBS2’s Jessica Layton. She tweeted, “Hey Twitter, Let’s use our power for good by guilting @FlatTummyCo into taking down their Times Square billboard advertising appetite suppressants. Have we actually gone mad? Why aren’t there any boys in the ad? Why is it (expletive) PINK? Because you feel men can look however they want? Their goals are to be successful. But ours are to just be smaller?” Some moms have called it a body-shaming billboard. “Obviously, it’s suggesting that if you have a flat tummy, you’re a better person, and I don’t link that message,” one woman said. “Not really offensive to me,” said another. Celebrities like Kim Kardashian have promoted the product, and while some people say you can’t police every sign you seen, the company’s claim that the 35 calorie pops are natural and safe have not be evaluated by the FDA, Layton reported. Flat Tummy has not responded to CBS2’s request for comment, but the company’s website does say you should consult your doctor before trying any of its products or any dietary supplements at all. The companies that own the billboard also did not return our calls or emails.
