RIVERHEAD, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) — A mother’s anguish was on display in a Suffolk county courtroom Monday as a grand jury unsealed charges against her son’s alleged hit-and-run driver . Investigators say 31-year-old Shannon Palmer, of Hauppauge , ran her SUV into two boys, ages 12 and 9, on Express Drive in Ronkonkoma back in August, leaving the children seriously hurt and their mangled bikes on the side of the road, CBS2’s Carolyn Gusoff reported. “No parent should have to go through what I’ve been through,” said Symone Houston. Houston said she will not rest until she gets justice for her son Troy and his friend Toriano Jamison. The boys and a little brother were riding bikes on an early August evening when tragedy struck on the shoulder of the LIE Service Road in Ronkonkoma. “My brother got hit by the car, so I ran to the neighbor’s house and called my dad,” one boy said. Supporters of the injured boys have rallied for justice. “My son became a victim when Shannon Palmer left him on the side of the road with no regards for his life,” Houston said. “What kind of person does this?” Palmer is indicted on two felony counts of leaving the scene of an incident with serious physical injuries. She was convicted of misdemeanor DWI in 2014. “My son’s life matters. His future matters,” said Houston. Palmer pleaded not guilty. “We just don’t jump from the incident to guilty. We go through due process and that is what we are going to do on this case, like we do on every case,” said Palmer’s defense attorney Christopher Brocato. Palmer is out of custody while awaiting her next court date on Jan. 19. The families and supporters have called for attempted murder charges against Palmer, claiming she left the boys for dead.

NFL Week 10 AFC North Picks: Ravens ‘Have To Switch Things Up, They Have To Get Going,’ Says CBS Baltimore’s Rick Ritter

( CBS Baltimore ) — The AFC North remains the most competitive division in football, with three likely playoff contenders and a Cincinnati Bengals team that can beat anyone in a given week. They’ll get their first crack at the undefeated Pittsburgh Steelers this Sunday. The Cleveland Browns welcome back running back Nick Chubb, who should be able to do some damage against a Houston Texans defense that can’t stop anyone. The Baltimore Ravens, meanwhile, will look to work through a few issues on offense against the New England Patriots, who have quite a few issues of their own. Rick Ritter, CBS Baltimore anchor and host of the Ravens’ ‘Purple Pregame’ show, breaks down AFC North matchups for Week 10. All times listed are Eastern. Houston Texans @ Cleveland Browns, Sunday, November 15 @ 1:00 p.m. (FOX) The Texans defense is among the worst in the NFL. And against the run, they are the absolute worst, allowing 159.5 yards per game. According to Ritter, “I don’t think anybody in the NFL, jumping over to the defense real quick, is scared of that Texans D. Going into last week’s game against Jacksonville, they were giving up 31 points per game, which is just hard to believe.” An explosive Browns offense should be able to move the ball at will, especially with Nick Chubb returning from injury. “It seems likely they’re going to be getting Nick Chubb back, which is a huge addition to that offense,” says Ritter. “When Chubb is healthy and Kareem Hunt is healthy, it’s hard to argue that there’s a better running game in the entire league. Those two just go together so well.” > > READ: Fantasy Football Start Or Sit Week 10: ‘Jared Goff Has Top Five Potential’ Against Seahawks The Browns passing game might be a story of addition by subtraction. “We talk about Odell Beckham going out for the season with that injury,” says Ritter. “Baker [Mayfield] actually looked better without Beckham. So can he keep that up if he doesn’t have to worry about forcing somebody the ball? Obviously, there was a little drama there this season, with him demanding the ball.” The Browns defense will have their hands full with Deshaun Watson. “That offense is explosive,” says Ritter. “They can score at the drop of a dime. They had two touchdowns last week, a 55-yarder and a 77-yarder. I don’t think there’s a defense in the league that Brandin Cooks and Will Fuller can’t get behind, when they have the opportunity. So they can put up points.” Myles Garrett and company will look to make Watson’s life difficult, while the Browns offense controls the ball and the clock on the ground. “It will be closer than people think,” says Ritter. “But I think the Browns get this win.” Cincinnati Bengals @ Pittsburgh Steelers, Sunday, November 15 @ 4:25 p.m. (FOX) The Steelers are the NFL’s last remaining undefeated team , and they’ve beaten the Bengals in their last 10 matchups. Some of the Steelers’ wins this season have been close; they only beat the Dallas Cowboys by five points last week. Likewise, some of the Bengals’ losses have been close. Cincinnati also has an extra week of rest, with their bye following a nice win over the Tennessee Titans. Even with all that in mind, “it is hard to bet against the Steelers right now,” says Ritter, “assuming Big Ben and company are fine, with some of them being placed on that COVID list . This is a crazy stat to throw out here. If Ben Roethlisberger keeps up on this pace, he is going to break his single-season touchdown record at 38 years old, which is really just hard to believe. Up there is Pittsburgh, they have three wide receivers out of that organization. JuJu Smith-Schuster seemed to start coming along the last couple of games. He looked great against Dallas. Obviously, Chase Claypool, we know what he can do. And Diontae Johnson. Roethlisberger has a slew of weapons at his disposal.” > > READ: NFL Week 10 NFC North Picks: Dalvin Cook ‘Has Been Tremendous Since His Return,’ Says SportsLine’s Kenny White And the Steelers defense can be dominant, allowing 317.4 yards and 20.1 points per game. They’ve also piled up 32 sacks, best in the league. Bengals rookie QB Joe Burrow has endured his fair share of sacks, but it hasn’t seemed to slow him down. “Don’t sleep on this guy,” says Ritter. “He’s a competitor. He knows how to go out and play.” And he has a few weapons around him, with A.J. Green, Tyler Boyd and Tee Higgins. “I can’t talk enough about Tee Higgins,” says Ritter, “how special this guy looks already, being so young and what he’s going to be. In a couple years, that guy, maybe even sooner, is going to be a top-five receiver in this league. I don’t expect Joe and them to roll over in any way in this game.” The Steelers are favored by 10 points, though the game could be closer. According to Ritter, “you can’t bet against Pittsburgh right now. I think they win this one.” Baltimore Ravens @ New England Patriots, Sunday, November 15 @ 8:20 p.m. (NBC) The Patriots, with their continuing struggles, almost handed the lowly New York Jets their first win. They’ll need to play a whole lot better to keep pace with the Ravens and improve upon their 3-5 record this week. The Ravens have their own issues , which, given their 6-2 record and personnel, are the kind of issues most teams would be happy to have. Baltimore leads the league in rushing, averaging 170.1 yards per game. Their passing game is only slightly more productive, putting up just 176.9 yards per game, among the NFL’s worst. > > READ: Fantasy Football Waiver Wire Week 10: Broncos Rookie KJ Hamler Beginning To Emerge The offensive issues were evident against the Indianapolis Colts defense, admittedly one of the league’s best. “That offense did not look good in the first half,” says Ritter. “[In the] second half, we start to see Lamar Jackson the MVP from last season a little bit. Kind of get into his groove, kind of take the game over.” A lot of the focus falls on the wide receivers and allowing them to make plays. According to Ritter, “there’s so much talk about the Ravens wide receivers and them not winning at the line of scrimmage in terms of those one-on-one-matchups. They have to get Marquise ‘Hollywood’ Brown the ball. There has been a lot of talk here in Baltimore and around the country about finding ways to get this guy the opportunities. And that falls on Greg Roman. He’s only had about 50 yards receiving the last two weeks. This is their number-one receiver. He can take the top off of the defense. He can get behind those safeties. In order for this passing game to get to that next level, they have to get ‘Hollywood’ Brown involved.” The offense has become predictable. “Lamar Jackson said today that defenses are calling out their plays on offense,” Ritter relayed. “Obviously, that’s a big concern, and it falls on the offensive coordinator. They have to switch things up, they have to get going.” Dez Bryant, recently activated from the Ravens’ practice squad, could help change that. Though it’s hard to expect too much from a receiver who hasn’t played since 2017. Despite their offensive issues, the Ravens remain a playoff contender, even as they chase the the Steelers. “They’re going to be okay,” says Ritter. “They’re going to make the playoffs. Lamar can take over a game. They have time to fix this stuff in the backend of the season with a favorable schedule. I have the Ravens winning this game on Sunday night football. Fantasy Football Waiver Wire Week 10: Broncos Rookie KJ Hamler Beginning To Emerge

By Matt Citak ( CBS Boston )- Well folks, Week 10 is here, which means we have entered the final month of the fantasy regular season. For most leagues, the fantasy postseason kicks off in Week 14. This means there are only four more weeks to clinch your spot in the playoffs, rise in the standings, or even seal that first-round bye. For the first time in what seems like a while, we survived a weekend of games without any significant injuries to fantasy contributors. Several players suffered concussions, paving the way for short-term relevance for some backups, while other lowly-owned players put up solid performances. While it may not be the biggest week on the waiver wire, there are still some solid pickups available. With that said, here are the top waiver wire adds for Week 10. Quarterback Credit: Norm Hall/Getty Images QB Tua Tagovailoa, Miami Dolphins- After a rough first start, Tua rebounded in a big way on Sunday. The fifth overall pick in this year’s draft completed just over 71 percent of his passes against the Arizona Cardinals, finishing with 248 passing yards, two touchdowns and zero interceptions, adding seven carries for 35 yards. Over the next three weeks, Tua will face off against the Chargers, Broncos and Jets, all of whom rank in the top 10 in most fantasy points allowed to opposing quarterbacks. The rookie has a fantastic opportunity to string together a few good performances in a row, making him a great streaming option for at least the next three weeks. QB Drew Lock, Denver Broncos- The Broncos offense has been difficult to trust all season, but there is no denying that the unit performs significantly better with Lock under center. In Denver’s disappointing Week 9 loss to the Falcons, Lock completed just 52 percent of his passes. However, he threw for 313 yards and two touchdowns, while picking up 47 yards and an additional touchdown on the ground. This upcoming week, Lock and the Broncos will face off against the Las Vegas Raiders, who just allowed Justin Herbert to throw for 326 yards, two touchdowns and zero interceptions. Lock is firmly on the streaming radar in Week 10. Running Back RB Duke Johnson, Houston Texans- One of the players to suffer a concussion in Week 9 was Texans running back David Johnson. Following the injury, Duke Johnson stepped into the role of the team’s lead back, and while he wasn’t terribly effective, he did end up having his best game of the season. Johnson finished with a season-high 16 carries, gaining 41 yards and scoring a touchdown, and caught all four of his targets for 32 yards. If David Johnson is unable to suit up this week, Duke Johnson will make a solid fantasy play for a Week 10 matchup against the Cleveland Browns. While we won’t know David Johnson’s game status until late in the week, add Duke Johnson now in case he’s thrust into the lead role again. RB J.D. McKissic, Washington Football Team- Antonio Gibson is clearly the most talented running Credit: Greg Fiume/Getty Images back in Washington’s backfield, but that hasn’t stopped McKissic from getting his fair share of touches. Now with Kyle Allen out indefinitely and Alex Smith under center, McKissic could see his role grow even more. In the Week 9 loss to the Giants, McKissic was targeted a whopping 14 times, turning it into nine receptions for 65 yards. In the two games Smith has filled in for Allen, he has attempted 49 passes with 18 of them going in McKissic’s direction. That is an incredible 36.7 percent target share. While that mark is likely not sustainable, Smith does have a history of targeting his running backs a lot. Allen could be the starting QB for the remainder of the season, which should bode well for McKissic’s fantasy value moving forward. If he’s still available on the wire, grab McKissic and don’t think twice about it. RB Jordan Wilkins, Indianapolis Colts- Following Marlon Mack’s season-ending injury in Week 1, Jonathan Taylor was supposed to take over as the Colts’ bell cow back. But after receiving 26 carries in Week 2, Taylor has topped 13 rush attempts just once over the last six games. Taylor got just six carries in Week 9 after seeing only 11 the week prior. Meanwhile, Wilkins has carried the ball 31 times in the last two weeks combined, gaining 128 yards and a touchdown. It appears as if there has been a changing of the guard in Indy, and while this backfield may be hard to trust moving forward, it looks like Wilkins is now the preferred ball-carrier. Over the next six weeks, the Colts get to face off against the Titans, Packers, Titans again, Texans, Raiders and Texans again. All four of those teams are currently in the top 10 in fantasy points allowed to opposing running backs. If Indy commits to Wilkins as the lead back, he could end up being a league-winner. RB Kallen Ballage, Los Angeles Chargers- The other running back injury to occur in Week 9 was Justin Jackson’s knee injury suffered on the first play of the game. Brutal luck for anyone who had Jackson in their lineup, but it did pave the way for journeyman back Kallen Ballage to see his first significant action as a Charger. Ballage finished with a team-high 15 carries for 69 yards (4.6 yards per carry) and a touchdown while catching two of three targets for 15 yards. Joshua Kelley has been disappointing since Austin Ekeler’s injury, but the rookie fourth round pick did end up catching five passes for 31 yards in Week 9. It’s unclear how serious Jackson’s injury is, although the fact that he got hurt so early in the game and did not return is not a good sign. Couple that with Austin Ekeler’s likely return in the near future, and it does not look like Ballage will remain fantasy relevant for too long. However, until Jackson and/or Ekeler are back, Ballage looks like the Chargers’ lead runner, placing him on the fantasy radar. Wide Receiver WR Curtis Samuel, Carolina Panthers- Don’t look now but Samuel has registered a touchdown in three consecutive games. The fourth-year receiver enjoyed the best game of his 2020 campaign against the Chiefs in Week 9, catching a season-high nine passes for 105 yards and a touchdown. Samuel has also earned several rush attempts each game, as he added three carries for 13 yards and recorded a touchdown run in both Weeks 7 and 8. It is clear that the Panthers want to get the ball in Samuel’s hands as much as possible. After being held out of the end zone in the first five weeks of the season, Samuel now has four total touchdowns over the last three games. Samuel should be a priority add for anyone in need of some help at wide receiver. WR K.J. Hamler, Denver Broncos- While the Broncos are certainly disappointed by their Week 9 loss to the Falcons, the team must be encouraged by the performance of some of its young offensive players. We already touched on Drew Lock, while Jerry Jeudy just had the best game of his rookie campaign, and he’s not the only receiver to do so. Hamler was targeted 10 times against Atlanta, catching six of those passes for 75 yards and adding one run for 15 yards. After a hamstring injury sidelined him earlier in the season, Hamler finally appears fully healthy and his production supports this. Hamler also returned one punt and one kickoff return in Week 9, highlighting the fact that the Broncos want the ball in their rookie third round pick’s hands. Hamler could step up as the number two option in the Broncos’ passing game behind Jeudy, a role which should plant him firmly on the fantasy map. WR Danny Amendola, Detroit Lions- Kenny Golladay missed this one due to the hip injury suffered in Week 8, which allowed Amendola to fill in as Matthew Stafford’s favorite target. In the first two weeks of the season with Golladay sidelined, Amendola was targeted seven times each game. In Week 9, Amendola led the Lions with 10 targets while no other receiver had more than five. The slot receiver turned those targets into seven receptions for 77 yards, but was held out of the end zone yet again. Amendola is yet to score this season, but offers a solid floor when Golladay is not on the field. If Golladay is unable to go this week, Amendola should make a solid FLEX play against Washington, who’s strength in the secondary lies on the outside with Kendall Fuller. Tight End TE Austin Hooper, Cleveland Browns- Hooper missed the last two games leading up to Cleveland’s Week 9 bye, which is why he has seemingly fallen off the radar for many fantasy owners. In the three weeks prior to that, Hooper was targeted a total of 23 times, finishing with five receptions for either 50+ yards or finishing with a touchdown in each contest. Hooper has yet to take the field since Odell Beckham’s season-ending injury, which will likely lead to Baker Mayfield leaning on his tight end even more. In Week 10, Hooper and the Browns will welcome the Houston Texans to Cleveland. In one game against the Texans last year, Hooper, then a member of the Falcons, caught six passes for 56 yards. Hooper is a TE1 in this matchup, and could end up being a reliable option at fantasy’s weakest position for the rest of the season depending on the play of Mayfield. With Travis Kelce and Hayden Hurst both on byes, you’d be hard pressed to find a better replacement than Hooper this week.

Top Daily Fantasy Players Week 11: O.J. Howard Sneaky Good Option Against Giants

Steve Silverman While it has been an up-and-down year for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on the field, their pass-catching threats have consistently been, well, threats in the fantasy football world. Wide receivers Desean Jackson and Mike Evans rank in the top 20 among wide receivers in fantasy points per game with Evans averaging 11.7 and Jackson averaging 11.2. Second year tight end O.J. Howard has also emerged, currently ranking fifth among tight ends this season. With the Bucs set to take on the lowly Giants this week, Howard looks like a nice option at the tight end spot for your daily fantasy lineups. Quarterbacks 1. Patrick Mahomes, Kansas City Chiefs at Los Angeles Rams, FD Proj. – 29.3 points This is a huge game between two of the best teams in the league, and the backstory changed dramatically Tuesday when the game was moved from Mexico City to Los Angeles because of problems with the field. Mahomes has been a machine this season, showing off his big arm and his propensity to make game-changing plays. He has a 31-7 TD-interception ratio, and he gets a chance to show the Rams exactly what he can do. 2. Drew Brees, New Orleans Saints vs. Philadelphia Eagles – 28.3 points The Saints continue to roll, and it looks like Brees as has a great chance to win the MVP award this season because of his remarkable numbers. Brees is completing 77.3 percent of his passes with a 21-1 TD-interception ratio. In addition to those totals, Brees is playing with remarkable skill and he appears to be in peak form. 3. Jared Goff, Los Angeles Rams vs. Kansas City Chiefs – 27.2 points. The Rams are probably thrilled about getting this home game after preparing for a trip south of the border. Goff should be able to have a strong performance against a Kansas City defense that has been generous throughout the season. 4. Carson Wentz, Philadelphia Eagles vs. New Orleans Saints – 26.5 points The Eagles have not played like a Super Bowl team to this point in the season, but they are still in a position where they can turn things around. That needs to start this weekend and they need to play their best game against the hottest team in the league. This would be an ideal spot for Wentz to show off all his skills and light a fire under his own team. 5. Philip Rivers, Los Angeles Chargers vs. Denver Broncos – 25.4 points The Chargers continue to stay on track for a playoff spot and they have been consistent as they chase the first-place Chiefs. While Los Angeles struggled in Week 10 against the Raiders, they won the game by two touchdowns. Rivers is a relentless leader and we see him throwing three TD passes against the overmatched Broncos. Running backs 1. Todd Gurley, Los Angeles Rams vs. Kansas City Chiefs – 23.8 points If anyone is going to take the MVP award from Brees or Mahomes, it’s likely to be Gurley. He already has 988 rushing yards and he has pounded the ball into the end zone 13 times. He is also a stellar receiver with 402 receiving yards and four more TDs. He is licking his chops to get a chance to compete against the generous Kansas City defense. 2. Saquon Barkley, New York Giants vs. Tampa Bay Bucs – 23.0 points The Giants won a Monday night game against San Francisco, and they gave the team a little hope that it could play respectably in the second half of the season. That may be too optimistic, but there’s no reason that Barkley and the Giants can’t take charge against a poor Tampa Bay team. Barkley’s combination of speed and power could allow him to dominate against the Bucs. 3. Kareem Hunt, Kansas City Chiefs at Los Angeles Rams – 21.3 points The presence of Gurley should bring out the best in the competitive Hunt, who doesn’t want to be thought of as the second-best running back on the field. Hunt has game-breaking speed, and he can dominate as a runner or a receiver. He already has 13 touchdowns – seven as a runner and six more as a receiver. 4. Melvin Gordon, Los Angeles Chargers vs. Denver Broncos – 20.3 points It’s hard to find a player more valuable to his team than Gordon is to the Chargers. He has explosive speed and he runs with power, and his dependability makes life much easier for Philip Rivers. The quarterback has often had to carry the Chargers throughout his tenure with the team, but that is not the case this year. 5. Christian McCaffrey, Carolina Panthers at Detroit Lions – 19.7 points What Gordon does for Rivers is what McCaffrey does for Cam Newton. He has improved dramatically this season, showing the ground game to match the big-play receiving ability he demonstrated a year ago. McCaffrey has 579 rushing yards and 439 receiving yards and he has a chance to get even more productive in the second half of the year. Wide receivers 1. Michael Thomas, New Orleans Saints at Philadelphia Eagles – 16.8 points The Eagles need to be primed to play their best game if they are going to beat the Saints, but don’t think for a second that they can stop Thomas from making big plays. In addition to his athletic ability, Thomas is one of the game’s best pattern runners and he has excellent hands. Thomas has caught 78 passes for 950 yards and seven TDs. 2. DeAndre Hopkins, Houston Texans at Washington Redskins – 15.9 points It’s one of the great thrills to watch Hopkins go after the football. He has wonderful leaping ability and long arms, and he also has the kind of hands that allow him to make the most difficult catches under the most challenging circumstances. 3. Odell Beckham Jr., New York Giants vs. Tampa Bay Bucs – 15.5 points From this corner, it seems like ODB is all about making highlight-film plays and not necessarily doing every little thing that helps the Giants win. If Beckham has been on your fantasy team the last couple of years, you probably agree. However, you are going to keep him on your team because he can be dominant when he is on his game, and there’s no reason that will not be the case against the Tampa Bay. 4. Tyreek Hill, Kansas City Chiefs at Los Angeles Rams – 14.4 points The Rams have been quite vulnerable on defense the last two weeks, and that means an explosive receiver like Hill should be able to exploit this unit. Hill is one of the fastest players in the game and he should be able to find some open spaces in the Los Angeles secondary. 5. Brandin Cooks, Los Angeles Rams vs. Kansas City Chiefs – 13.6 points The Rams suffered a huge blow with the season-ending injury suffered by wideout Cooper Kupp, and it could keep them from meeting all their goals. Cooks and Robert Woods must step up their games, and look for Cooks to be the more productive of the two against the Chiefs. Tight ends 1. Travis Kelce, Kansas City Chiefs at Los Angeles Rams – 11.3 points There has been an unofficial changing of the guard at the tight end position this season because Rob Gronkowski has been hurt recently and unable to play as consistently as Kelce. Look for Kelce to have a huge game against the Rams. 2. Zach Ertz, Philadelphia Eagles vs. New Orleans Saints – 10.9 points The Saints have been rolling and their defense has been playing well, but that area is where they are most vulnerable. Ertz has more talent than the Saints defensive backfield, and he should have a huge game here. 3. Jimmy Graham, Green Bay Packers at Seattle Seahawks – 8.7 points This may have been the game that Graham has been waiting for since the start of the season. He should be getting ready for some peak appearances and he would love to do it against his former team. Graham has caught 33-439-2, and he will build on those figures against Seattle. 4. O.J. Howard, Tampa Bay Bucs at N.Y. Giants – 7.9 points The Bucs are coming off a horrific game against the Redskins in which they were held to a field goal. They had more than 500 yards of offense the previous week, and look for Howard to put his imprint on this game with at least one TD catch. 5. NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — There’s a pretty good chance Todd Bowles will remain the Jets’ head coach for the remainder of the season. This according to the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, who said Monday the organization doesn’t want to make a “rash” decision. The Jets have not fired a head coach during the season since 1975, when Ken Shipp replaced Charley Winner on an interim basis for the final five games. Even after yesterday’s horrific loss, my understanding is that any possible changes coming to the #Jets would be based on a decision made after the season, rather than during. That is the expectation. Decisions won’t be rash. — Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) November 12, 2018 The Jets fell to 3-7 with Sunday’s brutal 41-10 loss to the lowly Buffalo Bills , who started their fourth-string quarterback after scoring a combined 33 points over the previous four games. New York has lost four in a row, including defeats to division foes Miami and Buffalo over the last two weeks. The Jets have a bye in Week 11 before returning to action on Nov. 25 against the visiting New England Patriots, who have taken 12 of the last 14 regular season meetings. The Jets are 23-33 during Bowles three-plus seasons as head coach, but have lost 27 of their last 40 games. They have not made the playoffs since the 2010 season. Following a 13-6 loss at Miami on Nov. 4, a game in which the defense played very well and the offense struggled mightily, Sunday’s matchup with Buffalo looked favorable on paper for the Jets, even with starting quarterback Sam Darnold sidelined due to a foot injury. The Bills entered the game losers of four straight and averaging just 10.7 points per game for the season. Buffalo was also last or near the bottom of the league in most of the other primary offensive categories. But the Jets simply didn’t show up. Expect that trend to continue over the remaining games on the schedule, as there is a good chance New York will not be favored against any of its remaining opponents. After playing at home against the Patriots following the bye, the Jets travel to Tennessee, which beat up New England on Sunday, and then play the Bills in Buffalo, where they have won just once in the last six years. The Jets then return home to face red-hot Houston and perennial NFC power Green Bay before closing the season at New England. “We’re going to try like hell to win our last six games,” Bowles said. It’s too early to say if Darnold will return in Week 12. If he can’t go, expect the Jets to again go with veteran Josh McCown, who was 17 of 34 for 135 yards with two interceptions against Buffalo.

Bills Tab Matt Barkley To Start Sunday Against Jets

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — The Buffalo Bills are going with newly signed journeyman Matt Barkley as their starting quarterback, rather than provide turnover-prone Nathan Peterman another chance. The Bills ruled out injured rookie Josh Allen on Saturday and announced Barkley is expected to start against the New York Jets on Sunday. Barkley gets the nod ahead of Peterman despite having just two weeks of practice experience since signing Oct. 30. Barkley will become the fourth quarterback to start for the team this season, and third in three weeks. It will be his first start in two years since going 1-5 with the Chicago Bears in 2016. Allen will miss his fourth straight game since spraining his right throwing elbow in a 20-13 loss at Houston on Oct. 14. The first-round pick practiced on a limited basis this week and will get additional time to recuperate with Buffalo entering its bye week after playing the Jets. Veteran backup Derek Anderson had already been ruled out with a concussion. The Bills also announced starting rookie middle linebacker Tremaine Edmunds has been cleared to play after missing one game with a concussion. They also promoted receiver Robert Foster from the practice squad and released linebacker Ramon Humber. Buffalo (2-7) has lost four straight and is off to its worst start since losing eight of its first nine games in 2010. The game between the two AFC East teams will feature a matchup of backups rather than first-round picks. The Jets (3-6) are starting 39-year-old Josh McCown with rookie Sam Darnold sidelined by a strained right foot. Darnold was drafted third overall, four spots ahead of Allen. Barkley is on his sixth team in six seasons since being selected by Philadelphia in the fourth round of the 2013 draft. He was most recently in Cincinnati before being cut by the Bengals in September after hurting his knee in a preseason game. “It hasn’t maybe been the plan I signed up for when I thought of going to the NFL,” Barkley said of his pro career, which came after he set numerous school records as a four-year starter at Southern California. “But from what I’ve been able to learn along the way, I think I’m in a great spot right now.” Overall, Barkley has gone 159 for 266 for 1,911 yards passing with eight touchdowns and 18 interceptions in 11 NFL appearances. That’s much better than Peterman’s production since being selected in the fifth round of the 2017 draft. Peterman has thrown seven interceptions in four appearances this season, including three in a 41-9 loss to Chicago last weekend. Overall, he’s thrown 12 interceptions in eight appearances and is best remembered for getting picked off five times in the first half of a 54-24 loss at the Los Angeles Chargers a year ago. The Bills offense has struggled no matter who’s started this season. Buffalo has scored a league-worst 96 points and just two touchdowns in its past four games. Maldonado’s contributions behind the plate helped the Angels’ starters post a 3.77 ERA, which ranked fifth in the American League despite numerous injuries and significant inexperience in their rotation. A Gold Glove winner last season, Maldonado is also hitting .223 with 32 RBIs in 78 games. “Martin has been a huge part of what we know has been a terrific year on the mound,” Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. “There’s no doubt that Martin had the respect of everybody, not only the coaching staff but the players, and contributed greatly to where we needed to be on the defensive side.” Maldonado, who is owed $1,362,903 from his $3.9 million salary, is eligible for free agency after the World Series. He understood that a trade was possible given the Angels trailed Houston by 15½ games in the AL and began the day 10½ games back of Seattle for the second wild-card berth. “I’m going to be a free agent. We haven’t played the way we want to play, and today is business. They got to do whatever is best for the team,” Maldonado said. ANAHEIM (AP) — Mike Trout drove in a teammate for the first time in more than a month, homering to cap a seven-run burst in seventh inning for the Los Angeles Angels in a 14-5 rout of the Houston Astros on Sunday. Trout hit his 26th home run, a drive off Chris Devenski that followed Andrelton Simmons’ single. Trout’s only RBIs since June 19 had been solo homers off Baltimore’s David Hess on June 29 and against the Los Angeles Dodgers’ Ross Stripling on July 7. Trout’s single in the first ending streaks of 16 plate appearances and 11 at-bats without a hit. David Fletcher had a two-run single in the big inning, Kole Calhoun greeted Devenski with a three-run homer and Ian Kinsler hit a solo homer in the eighth off J.D. Davis, an outfielder and corner infielder. A pitcher at Cal State-Fullerton, Davis had two mound appearances for the Astros in lopsided losses last year. After scoring one run over the previous 24 innings, the Angels set a season high for runs and stopped a three-game losing streak. Andrew Heaney (6-6) won his fourth consecutive home start, allowing one run, four hits and two walks in six innings.
