NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — COVID-19 cases are surging across the country. More than 100,000 new cases were reported Wednesday – a new record. So, are we about to enter a deadly third wave of coronavirus ? CBS2’s Dr. Max Gomez reports on why health officials are worried and preparing for the worst. Many people are calling this a third wave of COVID, but it’s really the latest and largest spike in what is still the first wave. Experts are concerned for several reasons, including: the coming of winter and holiday seasons, the geographic spread of the virus, and spotty adherence to mask wearing and social distancing . Even a quick glance at U.S. COVID cases as tracked by The New York Times reveals some ups and downs, but a clear trend now topping 107,000 cases daily. Experts say hospitalizations, then deaths, will soon follow. In fact, that’s already happening. The numbers are spiking in previously unscathed rural areas that have far fewer medical resources to deal with a pandemic, which experts say is just as concerning. “Even younger people are getting it and some of them end up being hospitalized. And this puts a bigger burden on the medical system, not only take care of those patients, but it kind of displaces people with normal illnesses. And that becomes a problem because they don’t get the proper care that they normally would because they’re afraid to go in,” said Northwell Health’s Dr. Mark Jarrett. Supplies are stockpiled, treatments are better and a vaccine may be available, but where Tri-State hospitals could previously bring in staff from across the country, that will now be impossible because of the nationwide outbreak. Winter is also when people will be crowded indoors, greatly increasing the chances of virus transmission. That’s also why Dr. Jarrett said this is the holiday season to not gather in person. Maybe do your Thanksgiving, Chanukah or Christmas safely via Zoom and keep wearing a mask. Health Officials Preparing For Worst As Coronavirus Spikes Nationwide
GOVERNMENT will be spending almost $1 billion in the final round of a national disaster -mitigation works programme, which will lead into to the Christmas season, Prime Minister Andrew Holness informed the House of Representatives yesterday.

VAN NUYS (CBSLA) — A Van Nuys teacher is learning a lesson from her own students about how generous and caring people can be. When Reesa Partida had to leave behind the house she was renting in Agoura Hills to escape the flames of the Woolsey Fire, she was aware she could lose everything. “Pretty much expecting the worst, just knowing where we were and how strong the winds were,” she said. But even as the worst happened and her home was completely destroyed, she still regrets the loss of certain irreplaceable items, like her wedding dress and her Christmas decorations. “Some of that stuff, my grandma gave me,” Partida said. “She’s dead now, and [they] can’t be replaced.” But instead of dwelling on her circumstances, she still went to work as a dance teacher at Van Nuys High School – and her students noticed. “Even the day that she was evacuated at 2 a.m. in the morning, she came to school and told us, ‘hey, I’m here to dance with you, because what good is it gonna do for me to just sit at an evacuation center and watch the news? I’m here for you guys to dance,’” a student, wearing a pullover with the name “Brandon” on it, recalled. Four of her Partida’s students jumped into action, asking their friends to pitch in to raise $500 initially. After getting a a great response, they raise their goal to $5,000, an amount they have almost reached. “I just wanted her to feel loved,” said one student who spearheaded the fundraising drive. “She deserves all the good things.” Partida seems to feel the students have accomplished their mission. “It’s so nice,” she said. “I felt so loved. That makes up for all the pain and sadness.” Partida says she and her husband are staying with her parents until they can find a new home.

HORTONVILLE, Wis. (CBSLocal) — A Wisconsin company that produces novelty glassware is giving each of its employees a handgun of their choice as a Christmas bonus this holiday season. BenShot makes bulletproof drinking glass products, including whiskey glasses, beer mugs and decanters, with bullets embedded into the glass. The father-son company, based in Hortonville, Wisconsin, has 16 full-time employees. This is the first time BenShot has done anything like this, according to co-owner Ben Wolfgram. He says giving employees their choice of revolver as a gift is part of an effort to promote personal safety and team building. Wolfgram says he isn’t worried about workplace violence because he has a small staff and all of the employees know each other well. “For us, now, we have an entire armed staff,” he told the Appleton Post-Crescent . “I think that’s pretty good.”

‘The Perfect Gift:’ Company Giving Handgun To Each Employee As ‘Christmas Bonus’
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) — The Rockefeller Center Christmas tree is in place and will soon be strung with 50,000 LED lights as one of New York City’s star holiday attractions — the gift of a same-sex married couple. The 72-foot-tall, 12-ton Norway spruce arrived on a flatbed trailer Saturday morning and was hoisted by a crane into a spot overlooking the Rockefeller skating rink. Crowds will gather Nov. 28 for a televised ceremony to see the tree burst alive with 5 miles (8 kilometers) of multicolored lights and a 900-pound Swarovski crystal star. The 75-year-old spruce comes from Wallkill, 60 miles (96 kilometers) north of New York. It was donated by Lissette Gutierrez and her wife, Shirley Figueroa, from their home property. They nicknamed it “Shelby.” Millions of people are expected to visit the tree that will stay up till Jan. 7. “Now it’s not my tree, it’s the world’s tree; I’m so happy to be able to share her with everyone,” Figueroa said at Rockefeller Center on Saturday. “Millions of people will come to visit Shelby.” Figueroa, 49, said she refers to the tree as “she” because “I felt she has a female spirit.” Also at the ceremony was Erik Pauze, the center’s head gardener who cared for the tree over the summer, watering it and feeding it compost tea. Figueroa said when she and Gutierrez bought their house, the previous owner said Rockefeller Center’s gardener had his eye on the tree. Gutierrez, 47, said she initially was reluctant to give up the spruce, but Figueroa convinced her. After the tree is dismantled, it will be donated to Habitat for Humanity to help build housing.
