HAWTHORNE (CBSLA) — Hawthorne-based SpaceX plans to launch four astronauts to the International Space Station on Sunday. The launch of the Crew-1 mission had originally been set for 4:49 p.m. California time Saturday from Cape Canaveral in Florida but weather conditions in Florida prompted a one-day delay. The launch is now set for 4:27 p.m. California time Sunday. In a Twitter post, NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine said the delay was prompted by “onshore winds and recovery operations.” The joint Nasa and SpaceX mission called Crew-1 follows this summer’s successful demonstration flight of the Crew Dragon capsule, SpaceX’s new ship. The capsule being used in the mission, named “Resilience,” is built to accommodate the four astronauts; Mike Hopkins, the mission commander, pilot Victor Glover and mission specialists Shannon Walker and Soichi Noguchi. In the lab’s 20 year history, Glover will become the first Black for a long duration. “I think it is important for astronaut core and the accomplishments of our agency to represent the beautiful variety in this country,” Glover said. “It is important to have kids who look like me, or look like I looked when I was younger, to see someone that they can relate to that way.” The Crew-1 mission is the first of three planned Crew Dragon flights in 2020 and 2021. NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) — Vice President-elect Kamala Harris is breaking barriers and inspiring many people, especially of the younger generation, CBS2’s Jenna DeAngelis reported Monday. Harris will become the first woman, first Black and first South Asian Vice President. “While I may be the first woman in this office, I will not be the last,” Harris said in a speech after President-elect Joe Biden was projected to win the White House. “She’s done this and that means that we can do this, too,” said Sophia Anikewich, a 6th grader at The Ursuline School in New Rochelle . MORE: Women In New York Celebrate As Vice President-Elect Kamala Harris Makes History Sophia is one of many students – aspiring lawyers, writers and doctors – who said they now see endless possibilities. “I think that this pushed me more towards any goal that I had in life, because I know that everything is now achievable,” said Anaya Balkcom, a junior at the school. “Sets a new precedence in leadership positions for young girls to aspire to,” said Genevieve Galluccio, a senior. This generation is looking to Harris, who honored the women who came before her in the speech Saturday by wearing suffragette white. “I stand on their shoulders,” Harris said. MORE: Cheering, Celebrations Erupt In Streets Of New York After Joe Biden Projected To Win Presidency “The future builds on the past. Without these breakthroughs, you’re not gonna see more change,” said Debbie Walsh, director of the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers. Walsh said Harris reaching the second highest office in the country is more than just symbolic. “It means that at that powerful table, where decisions are being made, there is somebody who sees the world through a gendered lens, and through a lens of race, and that will have an impact on policy,” Walsh said. “I think that no matter which side of the aisle that you align with, it’s impossible to deny how absolutely incredible this accomplishment was for all women across the board,” said Hailey Dorsainvil, a senior at Ursuline. It’s “herstory” in the making. Florida (CBS Local)– Chris Taylor and his black Labrador recently spent a few hours at Honeymoon Island Dog Beach in Florida. Unfortunately for Taylor, that time at the beach ended up killing his dog. Taylor’s dog died of salt water poisoning after he dehydrated and suffered a brain hemorrhage. Taylor’s dog O.G. began having stomach issues and diarrhea, which forced the owner to take him to the vet. Unfortunately, it was too late. “They told me, there’s nothing we can do right now. I thought, this is my son. I don’t have children of my own,” said Taylor . Saltwater can be extremely toxic for animals. According to veterinarians, ingesting large amounts of salt water can put a dog’s life in danger. Veterinarian Dr. Katy Meyer from the Tampa Bay Emergency Veterinarians Services has seen this story play out too many times. “Things can come on gradually and you’re not aware of how serious things are up front,” said Meyer . Dr. Meyer recommends that dog owners keep trips to the beach with their pets to two hours.
