Corey Oswalt Snags 1st Big League Win As Mets Top Padres

NEW YORK (AP) — Rookie Corey Oswalt beat his hometown Padres for his first major league win, pitching three-hit ball over five innings as the New York Mets beat San Diego 6-4 Wednesday for their first series win in two months. A 24-year-old right-hander who made his big league debut in April, Oswalt took the mound hours after the Mets announced slugging outfielder Yoenis Cespedes will have operations to remove calcifications in both of his heels, surgeries that are expected to have a recovery time of at least 8-to-10 months. Oswalt (1-2) made his fifth big league start and sixth appearance. He allowed two runs and two walks while striking out four, leaving after 62 pitches. Since sweeping three games against Arizona from May 18-20, the Mets had lost 12 series and split five. The 17 straight series without a win was one short of the team record set in 1982. San Diego has have lost or split its last 11 series. The Mets and Padres have the two worst records in the National League. Clayton Richard (7-10) allowed six runs, five hits and two walks in five-plus innings. He retired his first 12 batters on just 36 pitches and carried a 2-0 lead into the fifth. Freddy Galvis grounded into a run-scoring double play in the first and Austin Hedges homered in the fifth. Jose Bautista walked leading off the fifth and scored on Kevin Plawecki’s one-out single. Phillip Evans, pinch-hitting for Oswalt, hit a tying single and Amed Rosario followed with a two-run single. Bautista chased Richard with a two-run homer in the sixth. Bautista’s 339th homer tied him for 99th place with Tino Martinez, Dave Parker and Boog Powell. Galvis hit a two-run homer in the seventh off Peterson. FREAKY FIFTH Mets centerfielder Brandon Nimmo initially robbed Hedges of his homer in the fifth, but the ball bounced off an M&M ad on the back wall beyond the fence and into Nimmo’s glove. After a video review, Hedges was given a homer. Richard followed with s second walk of the season and was forced at second when Travis Jankowski’s flare drop dropped in short right, and Bautista threw to second for the forceout. Jankowski was then picked off by Oswalt, and first baseman Wilmer Flores threw to Rosario as Jankowski was caught stealing at second, a call upheld on another video review. TRAINER’S ROOM Padres: RHP Jordan Lyles (forearm) allowed seven runs in three innings Tuesday night for Triple-A El Paso and has an ERA of 17.47 in two minor league injury rehabilitation starts. Mets: Cespedes has played just 119 games since the start of last season due to hamstring and hip injuries. UP NEXT Padres: RHP Luis Perdomo (1-6, 8.99 ERA) is scheduled to open a three-game series Friday at home against Arizona. Mets: LHP Steven Matz (4-8, 3.65 ERA) is slated to start Thursday’s opener of a four-game series at Pittsburgh.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) — Yoenis Cespedes is back on the disabled list, and the New York Mets are still deciding whether the oft-injured slugger needs surgery on both feet that would require an eight-to-10-month recovery. An announcement had been expected before Tuesday night’s game against San Diego, but about 35 minutes prior to the scheduled first pitch Mets spokesman Harold Kaufman said the team was still waiting to receive a second opinion and it was unlikely the news conference would take place until after the game. New York put Cespedes on the 10-day DL and called up infielders Jeff McNeil and Phillip Evans from Triple-A Las Vegas. Evans was in the starting lineup at third base, batting eighth. Utilityman Ty Kelly was designated for assignment. Cespedes had an MRI and was examined by a specialist Monday in an effort to determine whether he needs surgery to alleviate chronic heel pain related to all the lower-body injuries that have kept him off the field so much since he signed a $110 million, four-year contract in November 2016. The two-time All-Star returned from the disabled list Friday after missing two months with a strained right hip flexor and homered in a victory at Yankee Stadium. NEW YORK (AP) — Jacob deGrom’s winless streak reached five games as the major league ERA leader was hurt by a pair of errors behind him, and the San Diego Padres beat the New York Mets 3-2 Monday night in a matchup of teams with the worst records in the National League. Rookie left-hander Joey Lucchesi (5-5), brought back from the minor leagues, baffled the Mets for the much of the evening with his churve, a combination curveball-chanegup at about 80 mph. Manuel Margot hit a go-ahead triple in a two-run fifth inning after right fielder Jose Bautista dropped Christian Villanueva’s fly ball. The Padres made it 3-1 in the sixth when Wil Myers doubled and scored when charging shortstop Amed Rosario let Eric Hosmer’s chopper get under his glove and bounce into the outfield. DeGrom (5-5), whose ERA rose from 1.68 to 1.71, allowed three runs — two earned — and five hits in eight innings, striking out 10 and walking two. He has given up three runs or fewer in 17 consecutive appearances and became the first pitcher to win fewer than seven games in his first 20 starts with an ERA below 2.00 since earned runs started being compiled in 1912, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. New York, just 40-57 despite an 11-1 start, dealt closer Jeurys Familia last weekend and is considering trading deGrom, who is eligible for free agency after the 2020 season. DeGrom’s agent said during the All-Star break he would prefer either a long-term contract or a trade. “We love him. We know what we have,” Mets assistant general manager John Ricco said. “He’s one of the top pitchers in the game, and in order to move him in a trade it would take an awful lot.” Second baseman Asdrubal Cabrera is likely to be dealt before the July 31 deadline for trades without waivers, and the impact of a losing record was clear at the box office. The game drew 21,731, the Mets’ smallest home crowd since April 4. San Diego, which is 42-61, had lost seven of eight and 23 of 30 coming in and also is retooling, dealing All-Star closer Brad Hand last week. Lucchesi has a herky-jerky windup in which the 25-year-old left-hander brings his hands high overhead, lowers them to his chest, pauses and only then rocks and throws. He made the crowd restless in the fourth, when he threw 10 pickoffs to first with Michael Conforto on base. Lucchesi ended the inning with a fine glove flip to first baseman Eric Hosmer to retire Jose Reyes on a slow roller. Lucchesi allowed two runs and six hits in 5 1/3 innings, struck out six and walked none. Kirby Yates pitched the ninth for his third save. Wilmer Flores’ RBI single put New York ahead in the third, and deGrom had thrown 37 pitches through the fourth and extended his scoreless streak to 15 2/3 innings. After reaching on Bautista’s error with one out in the fifth, Villanueva stole second and scored on Freddy Galvis’ single. New York closed to 3-2 in the sixth. Brandon Nimmo loaded the bases when Craig Stammen hit him with a pitch on the right knee and left ankle, the 16th time Nimmo has been plunked this season and third in two games. Reyes followed with a slow bouncer off the end of his bat to third for a run-scoring infield hit. DeGrom, who had thrown 80 pitches, grounded out to shortstop. CURIOUS When Myers nearly missed third base while running home in the sixth inning, the Mets waited for an indication from the video room rather than have deGrom throw to third and appeal. TRAINER’S ROOM Padres: RHP Colten Brewer was put on the 10-day DL, a day after straining his left oblique while pitching in the ninth inning of a doubleheader opener at Philadelphia. NEW YORK (AP) — Blake Snell blanked the Mets over a career-high-tying 7 1/3 innings, Wilson Ramos drove in a pair of runs and Tampa Bay downed New York 3-0 on Saturday. A late afternoon start under clear blue skies featured two young left-handers at the top of their game in recent weeks, both successfully dodging a slew of baserunners early. Ranked among the league leaders in several categories, the 25-year-old Snell was as advertised— keeping the Mets off the board despite allowing the leadoff runner to reach in six out of eight frames including each of the first four. Snell (12-4) struck out nine, scattering six hits and three walks while lowering his ERA to 2.09. The lanky lefty has yielded two runs or fewer in nine of his last 10 starts and is 4-0 with an 0.63 ERA over his last four outings, two against the Astros. After being held scoreless in 34 of their previous 36 innings, Tampa Bay finally broke through in the fifth. Matt Duffy lined a leadoff double down the right-field line, the fourth two-bagger surrendered by Mets starter Steven Matz to that point, advancing to third on a groundout. Ramos followed with a sharp grounder to shortstop. A charging Amed Rosario booted the ball before recovering and throwing to first for the out. With Duffy running on contact, Rosario likely would have cut down the run at home had he fielded the ball cleanly. Instead, the Rays took a 1-0 lead. Matz (4-6) continued his recent surge, charged with one run on five hits and three walks in 6 1/3 innings— striking out five. The Long Island native has allowed four earned runs across his last his three starts, a span of 18 2/3 innings. He escaped trouble early by getting Adeiny Hechavarria to fly out, ending a bases-loaded threat in the first. The Rays left seven men on in the first four innings and were 0 for 8 with runners in scoring position during that stretch. Tampa Bay was 2 for 25 with runners in scoring position in the first two games of the series, stranding a total of 18. The Rays added some insurance in the eighth on a bloop single by former Met Carlos Gomez, scoring Daniel Robertson. Ramos singled home a run in the ninth. Sergio Romo pitched a scoreless ninth for his ninth save in 13 chances. Neither Snell nor Matz had faced the opposing team before. Jose Bautista was 0 for 4 with three strikeouts after hitting a game-ending grand slam in the series opener Friday night. LOOSE LUMBER Both starting third basemen lost the grip on their bats an inning apart. Todd Frazier swung at a fastball in the bottom of the fourth, fouling it off and also sending his bat deep into foul territory down the third base line. Duffy had a similar experience in the fifth, letting go of his lumber and causing it to fly towards the Rays’ on-deck circle. FED UP One particularly vociferous spectator seated in front of the press box wore a paper bag on his head for most of the game, traditionally a sign of protest when fans are upset with the home team’s overall play. CLOSE CALL The Rays had a brief scare in the second when Snell’s pitching hand was grazed by a 92-mph sinker. The southpaw took his base and did not appear to be in pain. TRAINER’S ROOM Rays: Rookie infielder Willy Adames was scratched from the starting lineup. “He’s just under the weather,” manager Kevin Cash said. “He was battling a bug last night and I think he woke up this morning a little bit worse.” … RHP Jake Faria (strained left oblique) was scheduled to begin a rehab assignment with high-A Charlotte Saturday night. … INF Christian Arroyo (strained left oblique) could play for Charlotte on Monday but the club is not fully committed to that plan, according to Cash. Mets: LF Yoenis Cespedes (right hip) is continuing baseball activities including running straight sprints, although he has yet to begin turning the bases to simulate a double. “Trying to figure out that schedule as we go along,” said manager Mickey Callaway about when his club’s top slugger might play in a rehab game. “All that’s going to be based on how he bounces back day-to-day.” UP NEXT Rays: RHP Nathan Eovaldi (2-3, 3.92 ERA) pitches in the rubber game on Sunday.
