HOLLYWOOD, Calif. (AP) – In the battle of two very different sequels at the box office this weekend, Denzel Washington’s action pic “The Equalizer 2” has narrowly won out over the ABBA jukebox musical “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again.” Studios on Sunday estimate that the R-rated Denzel Washington joint grossed $35.8 million from North American theaters over the weekend. It’s Washington’s first ever sequel. Second place went to Universal Pictures’ “Mamma Mia 2,” which took in $34.4 million after a stronger start on Friday. The first film grossed more than $600 million 10 years ago. In its second weekend, “Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation” came in third with $23.2 million. “Ant-Man and the Wasp” took fourth place with $16.1 million in its third weekend, and “Incredibles 2” came in fifth with $11.5 million. Good afternoon, and what a great afternoon this is! Temperatures have reached the mid 80s and the humidity is staying low. (Credit: CBS2) Winds will stay light throughout the day, not that we really need them on a fine day like this. Skies are bright and blue with very few clouds in sight. This will be the trend throughout tonight and tomorrow, as well. There isn’t much going on in terms of weather in the area, but the rain will return this weekend, so enjoy the calm while it lasts. (Credit: CBS2) Today and tomorrow are perfect for outdoor activities, especially a trip to the beach! The UV index is high, so make sure that you are wearing plenty of sunscreen because the burn time is 20 minutes. (Credit: CBS2) The rip current risk is low to moderate, so if you are traveling to the New York coast, make sure that you are taking precautions. Humidity will remain lower today and tomorrow before returning this weekend.

BEVERLY HILLS (CBSLA) — No riding a scooter helmetless on Rodeo Drive or anywhere else in Beverly Hills. The city is cracking down. As CBSLA’s Crystal Cruz reports, if you’re caught in Beverly Hills riding a Bird electric scooter without a helmet you could get a ticket. “People should wear a helmet because I just heard a guy in Starbucks say he’s seen a lot of people in the hospital not wearing helmets,” said Bird rider Mohammed Mezia. Beverly Hills PD posted photos on social media of some of the people ticketed or cited over the weekend for not having a driver’s license or a helmet. One family from out of the country put the scooter down because they didn’t have a driver’s license. Others chose to keep on riding even though they didn’t have a helmet. “If I had access to a helmet I would be wearing it. I know Bird sends people with a helmet if you ask for them so I think I’m gonna do that,” said a Bird rider. Beverly Hills PD doesn’t know exactly how much the ticket will cost but on social media people complain the ticket could be from $200 to $400 around different cities.

NEWPORT BEACH (CBSLA) — If you are heading to the beach this weekend, do not go swimming alone. The surf in Newport Beach is expected to reach up to 7-feet, and with the king tides comes greater danger. On Saturday, a 52-year-old Aliso Viejo man died after being rescued from Thousands Steps beach in Laguna. Another man pulled from the water Friday is expected to be OK. “The last two days, we’ve had two swimmers, both were over the age of 50 years of age. They were strong, athletic swimmers, but they were by themselves,” said Capt. Steve Concialdi of the Orange County Fire Department. The man who died is the 16th drowning victim in O.C. just this year.
