What a pleasant way to finish the week! (Credit: CBS2) Skies are going to be bright today with plenty of sunshine to complement the warm temperatures. We started off this morning in the high 60s and jump about 20 degrees by this afternoon. The rain will stay clear today, not arriving until late tomorrow, so take advantage of the sunny weather now. Before this week were were running dry for year. However, after the line of the storms that rolled through the area early in the week, we are now caught up on rain for the year. We will continue to add on to that over the next couple of days. (Credit: CBS2) Humidity will stay low today and the feel like temperature will actually feel close to the real temperature today. NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Birds are coming to Broadway , but the wooden statues won’t sing, rather inform. For the last four months, Nicolas Holiber has used reclaimed and recycled wood to build bird statues. The goal is to install 12 of them in Upper Manhattan and bring awareness to how real life birds are impacted by climate change. “For me, this is a great environmental message… Combining of two amazing things: art and conservation,” said artist Nicholas Holiber. The Brooklyn artist has partnered with the Broadway Mall Association and the organization, New York City Audubon. He is using money from a Kick-Starter campaign to fuel his “Birds on Broadway” project. Holiber says each statue represents a bird that is either native to New York City or passes through on their migration routes. “They all are part of a group of over 300 North American species… that are in peril or face threats due to climate change,” he said. The nearly nine-foot tall birds are expected to land on Broadway April, 2019. They will take over Broadway, every 10 blocks or so, from W 64th St. to W 166th St. “Art brings people together,” said Holiber’s assistant Bishop Mcindoe. “It makes people put aside their ego and settle their differences.” Each statue will explain the problems these birds face and what help they need. Some New Yorkers are already looking forward to learning about this. “I don’t think too many people are aware of what’s going on,” said Upper West Side resident Mizunay Symesom. “I think it’s important for the next generation to actually see it,” said Upper West Side resident Peter Miranda. Holiber says he doesn’t plan on water proofing his creations — so New Yorkers can see the wear and tear from the weather. “Seeing that change and thinking maybe about what’s going on,” said Holiber. The organization Big Reuse has donated the wood that’s left over from the city’s demolition and remodel projects. The birds will be up for eight months.

After The Storm: Funnel Cloud Spotted In New York Harbor As Severe Weather Pummels Tri-State Area
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — An ominous funnel cloud was spotted in New York Harbor as flooding rains, damaging winds, and lightning pummeled the Tri-State Area Tuesday afternoon. CHECK: Forecast & Alerts The storm was moving its way across the area during the evening rush hour and wasn’t expected to let up until later in the day. The National Weather Service confirmed a funnel cloud formed over New York Harbor as the storm picked up. Viewers took to social media to record the rare sight. One person shot video of water shooting out of a manhole in Weehawken approaching the Lincoln Tunnel. Commuters underground also got wet, as subway riders dealt with slippery conditions at several stations across the five boroughs. The torrential rains turned streets into rushing waters all across the Tri-State Area. In Hoboken, waves of rain poured down causing sidewalk and street flooding. Umbrellas were no match for the powerful downpour. Strong winds uprooted a tree in Englewood, sending it slamming into a nearby SUV. Lightning struck a home in Bayonne, causing damage to the front part of the residence. One of the residents said she heard a very loud crash around 3:30 p.m. When she came out to investigate, she saw part of her patio on fire. Luckily, it didn’t spread far. Drivers were preparing for a dicey ride home, as cars were observed getting stuck on the FDR Drive. Northbound lanes were temporarily closed between 62nd and 78th Streets. The city’s subways didn’t fare much better. Customers had to walk through puddles of water at the 14th Street First Avenue stop along the L line. Rainwater collected at the bottom of the stairs, with straphangers opting to ditch their shoes to trudge across. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority said the Times Square Station was also flooded, as well as the Houston Street station along the 1 line. Several buses were also detoured due to flooding.

PASSAIC, N.J. (CBSNewYork) — Firefighters are on the scene of a massive fire that tore through several businesses in Passaic, New Jersey. The six-alarm fire started around 10 p.m. Monday on Lexington Avenue. It is believed to have started in a restaurant kitchen before spreading to at least seven other businesses, CBS2’s Jenna DeAngelis reported. “ The humidity, the weather is really knocking us down,” said Passaic Fire Chief Patrick Trentacost Sr. “The humidity is causing the fire and the smoke to stay low. It’s pushing the fire horizontal, across due to cockloft, and helping it spread to other buildings. Visibility is basically zero.” The city’s mayor was also on the scene. “All of our firefighters are working extremely hard to get this under control,” Mayor Hector C. Lora said. “You can feel the heat from this distance just how strong the flames are.” No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

By Bree Guy CBS2 Weather Intern Temps are getting up there! We are expecting to just scrape 90 today. (Credit: CBS2) Along with the high temperatures, there will be high humidity. Light and loose clothing is recommended. (Credit: CBS2) There will be a heat advisory in the city that branches out to western and northern areas. Also, what has become the normal for this month, an air quality alert will be in affect for northern areas so take precautions if you have sensitive respiratory issues. There may be a pop up shower this afternoon but it looks like most of it avoids the area and moves out pretty quickly. If it doesn’t come during the afternoon, there is also a chance it may roll through later tonight but it’s still the same fast moving story. (Credit: CBS2) Tomorrow is when the brunt of the rain will occur so make sure to bring the umbrella. Overall, the rest of the week is looking amazing with mid-80 degree temperatures and the humidity even starts to come down later in the week.
