PALMDALE (CBSLA) — Sheriff’s deputies are investigating a robbery in Palmdale that resulted in a family being tied up in their own home and left one man with injuries from being pistol-whipped. Deputies say they received a 911 call around 1:40 p.m. Monday reporting a home invasion indicating there were three male suspects in the house on Erika Ln. Investigators say the recipient of the call heard a struggle in the background shortly after, then the call was disconnected. When investigators arrived to the house, they found the family inside was tied up and robbed of cash and property. Residents came home to in the middle of the afternoon stunned by the scene. “To be coming up my street and seeing all these police cars lined up in front of his house and the yellow tape streaming around the trees, I was very shocked,” one neighbor said “I asked one of the officers if had someone had been killed,” another neighbor added. “He had explained that my neighbor had just been pistol-whipped by some intruders.” One neighbor says he spoke with the pistol-whipped victim. “I spoke to him briefly, he has knots all over his face and cuts and gashes on the back of his head from the pistol-whipping, and he’s terrified, he’s terrified,” the man said. Another neighbor spoke with the victim’s relative. “He told me who was home at the time was the man of the house, his wife and their infant child,” he said. Neighbors say the victims own several convenience stores in the area. On July 2, there was another home invasion not far from this house. In that case, the victim, the owner of a Thai Restaurant, was also robbed at her home. Sheriff’s investigators tell CBS2/KCAL9’s Rachel Kim it’s too early to know if the two cases are connected.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Straphangers across New York were on edge Monday after a recent string of unprovoked attacks in the city’s subway system. In the most recent case, sources tell CBS2 the alleged assailant now behind bars has been arrested 64 times. He was taken to NYC Health+Hospitals/Bellevue for a mental health evaluation while one of his victims hopes the city does more to stop a similar attack from happening again. Pictures from the scene at Columbus Circle appearing to show an agitated homeless man being restrained by several passersby shortly after the Monday morning attack are just the latest example of underground unrest in the Big Apple. “I was in shock,” one of the victims told CBS2. “I jumped back off the train immediately to try to snap a picture and call 911.” The woman, who doesn’t wish to be identified, says she took the pictures of the man after he allegedly punched her and two other women on the B train around 10 a.m. as it approached the Midtown station. “As soon as he came in he punched the first woman and tried to hurry and get out of his way, he went by me slightly and turned around and punched me in the head and then he ran,” the woman said. “As he was running out the door he went and punched this Asian woman in her face.” The victim says the attack left the last woman with a swollen and bloodied face. The seemingly random crime follows video the NYPD released this weekend of a man waving a knife at a rider aboard the E train at West 4th Street . Just over a week ago, police say a panhandler fractured a commuter’s skull after beating him with a metal object. In Monday’s melee, the victim says bystanders acted quickly to hold her alleged attacker until police arrived. Despite the string of incidents, the NYPD says subway violence is down roughly five percent compared to last year. Transit Chief Edward Delatorre says more uniformed and plainclothes officers are making a dent along with proactive riders. “People aren’t getting away with crimes in the subway system like they did decades ago,” Delatorre told CBS2’s Valerie Castro. “Just about every commuter is armed with a cell phone, taking pictures of people who do commit these crimes.” Some say it’s not enough, and argue the city needs to do more to help people with mental illness. The victim in Monday’s attack says it’s “running rampant.” “We’re doing what we can to connect them to the services they need,” Delatorre said. The man arrested Monday was last arrested two years ago for public urination at a subway station in Brooklyn, according to police.

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — Authorities said a 30-year-old woman was charged Thursday with attempted murder after she allegedly beat a 92-year-old man in Willowbrook with a brick last week. The LA County District Attorney’s Office says Laquisha Jones of Los Angeles has been charged with two counts. In addition to attempted murder Jones was also charged with elder abuse, infliction of injury. The defendant was arraigned Thursday in Superior Court. Prosecutors asked that bail be set at $1.125 million. The felony complaint includes special allegations that the defendant personally used a deadly and dangerous weapon, a brick, during the commission of the crime and that she committed great bodily injury upon the victim, identified as Rodolfo Rodriguez. The victim was visiting the US from his native Mexico. (credit: GoFundMe) The charging document alleges that Jones was previously convicted of making criminal threats in 2017. CBS2’s Cristy Fajardo reported from the Compton courtroom and said Jones was on probation for this case. Deputy DA Frank Dunnick of the Victim Impact Program is assigned to the case. Prosecutors said on the evening of July 4, Jones allegedly attacked the elderly man with a brick near 118th and Robin streets in Willowbrook. Following the reported assault, the victim was taken to the hospital for medical treatment and Jones allegedly fled the scene, according to prosecutors. After conducting further investigation, law enforcement identified Jones as the alleged assailant and arrested her on July 10. If convicted as charged, the defendant faces a maximum possible sentence of 29 years in state prison. The victim reportedly suffered a broken cheekbone, broken ribs, bruises and lacerations on his face. Rodriguez doesn’t speak English. But he told his family he was walking down the street when he bumped into a little girl as he tried to walk around her. The suspect, believed to be the girl’s mother, allegedly threw Rodriguez to the ground and starting hitting him with her fists, and then the brick. A witness also said she heard the suspect tell the victim to “Go back to your country.” In court Thursday, Jones entered a not guilty plea and avoided being seen by TV cameras. Laquisha Jones On Thursday, the victim’s family announced they were being represented by the Carillo Law Firm. “Mr. Rodriguez is slowly recovering from this senseless and brutal assault,” attorney Luis Carillo said. “His family is appreciative of the community’s outpouring of support and concern about his condition. The family has been inundated with media requests and is asking for a brief reprieve as they try to get back to a sense of normalcy. As soon as Mr. Rodriguez and his relatives are ready to share their story, we will make them available to the media.” A GoFundMe page has been set up for the victim. A $15,000 goal was quickly reached. Current total: $314,172 at this writing with more than 11,595 people donating. The case is being investigated by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. SAN BERNARDINO (CBSLA) – Authorities are looking for a driver who fled after hitting and killing a pregnant woman while she was crossing a street in San Bernardino late Wednesday night. The victim, believed to be in her 20s, was struck in a crosswalk at the intersection of Highland Avenue and Medical Center Drive a little after 11:30 p.m., according to San Bernardino police. A witness, who did not want to be identified, told CBS2 she heard a crash and a gut-wrenching scream. She ran to the victim, but found her dead. “She was already laying lifeless on the ground, there wasn’t nothing no one could do for her,” said the witness. Officers responded to find the woman dead at the scene. She was not immediately identified. Police believe she was far along in her pregnancy. “The only one that can take the life of a fetus would be a doctor,” San Bernardino Sgt. Jeff Harvey told CBS2. “So, in this case, we have a woman carrying a child, and both of them were killed, so we have two victims.” Police provided CBS2 with surveillance video of the collision from a nearby store, which shows that the woman had almost made it across the street when she was hit. The suspect vehicle, a black Dodge Charger, was found abandoned a short distance away. Police said after hitting the pedestrian, the car veered away, struck a fence and then caught fire. Witnesses told officers the suspect driver, a woman, exited the car and was picked up by a second vehicle, which fled. Investigators are now trying to find the owner of the Charger. Anyone with information on the case should call police.
