NYPD: Bronx Suspect Got Into 89-Year-Old Woman’s Apartment Through Unlocked Door, Robbed Her In Bedroom

(credit: NYPD) NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — The NYPD is trying to find a man accused of entering an elderly woman’s Bronx apartment and robbing her. It happened near Beck Street and Longwood Avenue at around 2:30 a.m. on Saturday, according to police. The suspect allegedly got into the 89-year-old woman’s ground-floor apartment through the back door, which was apparently unlocked, police said. “It has been tough. I keep repeating it in my mind over and over again … I’m not a good sleeper and I was about to start reading and I hadn’t turned my light on yet and I saw someone come by my bedroom door with a flashlight. I thought it was my son,” the victim told CBS2’s Cory James exclusively. But it was not her son, who lives upstairs. When the suspect encountered the woman in her bedroom, he grabbed her arm, threw her on the bed and demanded money, police said. The victim gave him her purse, police added. “I thought I could grab out a $20 (bill) and give it to him, but he took the whole purse. There was $100,” she said. The NYPD released this surveillance video of the suspect: The suspect fled through the back door, leaving the woman recovering from hip and leg surgery with bruises on her leg and arm. Neighbors said they were disturbed by what happened. “It really is so disgusting to hear something like that,” Lydia Santiago said. “There’s no courtesy, no respect for the elders,” Juan Berrios added. “I’m glad he didn’t hurt me more. He bruised me, but he didn’t do anything more. At 89, I could be hurt very badly and I wasn’t,” the victim said. Police believe the suspect is in his 50s and approximately 6 feet tall. The victim admitted that the door to her apartment was unlocked. She said it was a one-time mistake that she will not make again. Armed Suspect Accused Of Stealing People’s Jewelry On Subway

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Police are on the prowl for a man accused of stealing people’s jewelry on the subway. The suspect allegedly struck four times between Oct. 16 and Nov. 3. Police said in the first incident, the suspect approached a 39-year-old man and 36-year-old woman aboard a northbound Q train at Union Square and demanded the woman’s engagement ring. He made off with the ring, valued at $7,000. Less than a week later, police said the suspect grabbed a 31-year-old woman’s arm aboard a southbound F train at the West 8th Street-New York Aquarium station. He allegedly displayed a gun and demanded the man’s jewelry, making off with a necklace valued at $1,190 and ring worth $600. Then on Tuesday, police said the suspect was armed with a gun when he approached a 32-year-old man and woman aboard a Brooklyn-bound N train headed to the 36th Street station and told them to place their rings on the seat. He allegedly got away with rings valued at $3,000. No one was hurt in any of the incidents. Police released surveillance images of the suspect taken after the Oct. 23 crime. Police: Worker At Trendy Midtown Restaurant Choked, Punched In Violent Robbery

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Police are looking for a violent criminal who assaulted and robbed an employee inside a chic Manhattan eatery Friday afternoon. According to authorities, the suspect entered Quality Meats on West 58 th Street around 12:30 p.m. through a side entrance into the trendy restaurant’s basement. Once inside, the suspect was caught on surveillance cameras punching a 35-year-old female employee in the face and putting her in a chokehold. (Credit: NYPD) “I worked 15 years in the prison system, I know what desperation can do to people but it’s not an excuse,” customer Jim Steinberg said. The Quality Meats employee was treated by EMS workers before being taken to a local hospital. Police say the suspect got into the restaurant down an alleyway around the corner from the restaurant off Sixth Avenue. When he got inside, he allegedly said he wanted to apply to a job. He was then directed to the manager’s office, where the tussle happened. After all that, the man stole $400 from the worker’s backpack. Police say the unidentified suspect caught on camera is a black man, about 5-foot-7, weight 180 pounds. He was last seen wearing blue jeans, a black jacket, and a black winter hat. Robbery and assault suspect at Quality Meats in Midtown on Nov. 9. (Credit: NYPD) It wasn’t immediately clear of Quality Meats was taking any extra security measures in wake of the attack. The brazen robbery in Midtown was part of a rash of violent assaults in Manhattan this past week. Five people were assaulted in the nearby Hell’s Kitchen area, including a man and woman attacked by a homeless man Friday morning. Another man struck with a broomstick across the head by 23-year-old attacker that same day. HOLLYWOOD (CBSLA) — Fighting, vandalism, screaming matches, pushing ans shoving, a celebrity pretending to urinate on it — the Donald Trump star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame has seen it all. Police said it was also the scene of a robbery. The robbery happened Thursday just before 10 p.m. Authorities said the suspect turned himself in. One man robbed another in front of the star following a fight, police said. After the fight, officials said the suspect used bodily force to take the victim’s camera. The suspect was identified as Julio Gomez, 19, of Los Angeles, known to frequent the area of the Hollywood and Highland complex, police said. (credit: CBS) Gomez turned himself in about 3:30 p.m. Friday at the Los Angeles Police Department’s Hollywood Station, according to sheriff’s inmate records. His bail was set at $50,000. LAPD Officer In Good Condition After Being Shot During North Hills Traffic Stop

NORTH HILLS (CBSLA) – A female Los Angeles police officer is in good condition after being shot in the leg while conducting a traffic stop Friday night in North Hills. The suspect was also wounded by gunfire. The incident occurred at about 10:15 p.m. when two officers pulled over a vehicle at Plummer Street and Noble Avenue. As the two officers were approaching the car, the suspect inside it opened fire, hitting the officer in the leg, police disclosed. Her partner returned fire, striking the suspect as well. Both the officer and the suspect were rushed to local hospitals. The officer was in good condition as of Saturday morning. The suspect’s condition was not confirmed. What initially prompted officers to pull over the vehicle was not confirmed. It’s unclear if anyone else was in the car. The names of both the injured officer and the suspect were not released.

Suspect Dies Following Arrest At Riverside McDonald’s

RIVERSIDE (CBSLA) – A man who was allegedly attacking customers and employees at a McDonald’s restaurant in Riverside Sunday died after being taken into custody. At 12:44 p.m., Riverside police responded to a report of a man assaulting patrons and staff at a McDonald’s located in the 2200 block of University Avenue. Officers got on scene to find the suspect was being held down by a customer on the floor near the counter, police said. As officers were arresting the man, they noticed he was undergoing a medical emergency and called for paramedics. He was placed in an ambulance and rushed to a hospital, police said. However, while in the ambulance, he went into medical distress. After arriving in the emergency room, he was pronounced dead at 2:13 p.m., police disclosed. The suspect was not immediately identified. Per department policy, investigators with the Robbery-Homicide and Forensics units are investigating. The cause of death will be determined by the Riverside County coroner’s office.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Dramatic video shows a broad daylight road rage incident playing out in real time at a red light in Brooklyn. The victim had just started driving for Uber and says he fought back because he thought the attacker was going to steal his car. Now he says he’s lucky he made it out alive. The video shows one of the men throwing air jabs with a box cutter at the side of a road in Greenpoint. The footage looks like something out of a movie, but the victim’s body proves the violence was all too real. “I have some hand injuries, elbow bruises right there, some hip injuries,” the man told CBS2’s Jessica Moore. The victim, who didn’t wish to be identified, says he was driving down McGuinness Boulevard near Norman Avenue around 1:30 p.m. Wednesday when a reckless driver tried to cut in front of him. It all took a violent turn as soon as they stopped at a red light. “He got out of his car, started blaming me and taking swings at me so I defended myself,” the driver said. “He went back to his car, got a knife, and I was trying to not get cut.” After a few minutes, the suspect stole the Uber driver’s keys and took off in his car. The victim was pinned between two vehicles, sending his shoes flying into the air. “I knew it was a dangerous thing to hang onto a car but I was trying to not get the car taken,” the driver said. Police say it’s a miracle the victim wasn’t more seriously hurt as they continue looking for the driver of the white Hyundai with Florida license plates. The victim says he hopes police find him before he does. “I hope I don’t see him because I’m still really mad,” he said. “My neck could be cut open or I could be squished underneath a car.” Despite his best attempts to stop him, the victim says the suspect did get away with his keys. His car was towed, and he’s still waiting to get it back so he can get back to work.

Police said the suspect, believed to be in his teens, got into a family dispute Saturday, during which he shot his grandmother and another female. Armed Suspect Dead In Riverside Following Wild Pursuit, Gunfire

RIVERSIDE (CBSLA) – An armed suspect is dead after a pursuit that began in Hemet and ended amid gunfire in a busy shopping area in Riverside Friday night. The incident began at about 7:30 p.m., when Hemet police went to the home of a man to investigate a report that shots had been fired in a field earlier in the week. While in the area, officers noticed the suspect’s Chrysler convertible in the area of Kirby Street and Devonshire Avenue. When officers tried to conduct a traffic stop, the car sped away, prompting a pursuit. The chase wound its way westbound on Devonshire and south onto California Avenue. While driving on California Avenue, police said, the suspect fired multiple shots at the pursuing officers. The pursuit then made its way into the city of Riverside, where Riverside police took over. “We believe that at least twice during the pursuit, out in either their city or the county, that the suspect fired shots at the pursuing officers,” Riverside police spokesman Ryan Railsback told reporters. No officers were injured. The pursuit came to an end in the area of California and Arlington avenues, which is near several stores, including a Sears and a Ross Dress for Less. Witness Marie Lua was driving in the area with her family when she their car got caught up in the midst of the chase. “We were driving down Arlington, and we just saw probably 15, 20 cop cars just pass us,” Lua said. Lua said she watched as gunfire erupted. “I had my 5-year-old child in the car, there was nothing I could do,” Lua said. “So we just stopped our vehicle and pretty much just watched everyone shoot at him, and I don’t know if he shot back.” The suspect was found dead in his car at the conclusion of the pursuit. His name was not released. It’s unclear if he died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound or was killed by police. “It’s unsafe, and they could have went about it in kind of a safer way, before he actually hit traffic and they started shooting, while he was still in motion,” Lua said. The investigation into the case is ongoing.

NYPD Searching For Suspect In Queens Church Rectory Burglary

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Police are searching for a suspect who they say burglarized a church rectory in Queens. Investigators released surveillance images with a clear shot of the suspect’s face. It happened early Thursday morning at the Lady of Perpetual Help rectory on 115th Street in South Ozone Park. Police say he got in through an unlocked side window and stole about $115 in checks and cash. $30K Reward Offered To Help Find Suspect Who Fatally Shot Young Dad While Camping

CALABASAS (CBSLA) — A $30,000 reward was offered Wednesday for information leading to the suspect who killed a young father who was camping with his two daughters at Malibu Creek State Park. Tristan Beaudette, 35, of Irvine was killed last month. Detectives said they have no leads, no suspect and no motive. Beaudette was shot in the head while he was in a tent with his children. City and county leaders are hoping the offer of the reward money will help break the case. There is no known connection between the murder and as many as nine other shooting incidents at the park over the past two years. “It’s really bizarre, really bizarre. Scary,” said nearby resident Jon Lake. Lake and many of his neighbors say they are concerned that a killer is still on the loose. “My wife is probably the most relaxed person I know,” Lake said, “and she’s really nervous about this.” Lake believes all the shootings have some connection. “I definitely think it’s connected. It just seems too unreasonable for them not to be,” Lake says. Witnesses claimed to have have heard more shots this past Monday and Thursday. “People heard shots and a scream,” says CeCe Woods, publisher of a local Malibu paper. “They told everybody to lock their windows and their doors,” she says, “There was an active search. There were deputies who were pulled out of bed, called in for this search. that night on Thursday.” The entrance to Malibu Creek State Park In Calabasas, Calif., remains closed following a fatal shooting. (CBS2) Investigators have released very little information about the case. “Right after the murder,” says Woods, “There was talks of a description that they were going to release and then all of a sudden they held back from releasing it.” The city of Malibu pledged $5,000 to the reward and the LA County of Supervisors added $10,000. The LA County Sheriff’s added $15,000 more. LA County Supervisor Sheila Kuehl spoke to KNX 1070 about the reward. “I think this obviously is very serious,” Kuehl said, “and they don’t have enough information from the investigation, they haven’t been able to turn out any likely suspects or sufficient evidence which is why they wanted to offer the reward.” Woods hopes the reward money will climb even higher to help catch the killer. “There are residents there who hear and see everything,” Woods said, “everything all the time.” L.A. County Sheriff’s told Johnson they did a thorough investigation following the last report of shots fired but found no evidence.
