Doctors Worry Winterizing Outdoor Dining Spaces Will Increase COVID Risk For Diners

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — As the weather gets colder, restaurant owners are winterizing outdoor dining spaces, but it’s causing concern that they are becoming too enclosed and exposing diners to COVID . On the Upper East Side, Alexandra Boet searched for open and breezy outdoor dining. “I’m sure there’s more ventilation than if you’re inside,” she said. But colder weather brings walls, plywood roofs and tents to outdoor structures. They can reduce fresh air. “Ventilation is critical,” said Dr. Len Horovitz, an internist and pulmonologist at Lenox Hill Hospital. Horovitz says he considers tents and igloos problematic because they may not have proper ventilation. (credit: CBS2) “The problem is when walls are created, when they want to heat the inside and when there may not be sufficient ventilation inside to ensure lack of contamination,” he said. He wants restaurant owners to keep air circulating with open spaces and tells the public to choose outdoor dining areas carefully. “Ideally, you’re at a table outside in something like a parking lot with nothing overhead, and you take your football blanket and put it around you if that keeps you warm enough,” Horovitz said. Alex Trebek Donated 62 Acres Of Open Space Near Runyon Canyon

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) – Beloved “Jeopardy!” host Alex Trebek, who passed away over the weekend , was a major advocate for conservation, as evidenced by a significant donation of land he made in the Hollywood Hills over 20 years ago. (Credit: MRCA) Many Angelenos may not be aware that, in the late 1990s, Trebek purchased 62 acres of land between Runyon and Nichols canyons and donated it as public space. The area, known as “Trebek Open Space,” was donated to the Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority, a public agency which manages 75,000 acres in the Santa Monica Mountains. The land was purchased by Trebek for $2 million in 1998, according to the Los Angeles Times. It has trails for hikers, mountain bikers and horseback riding. Trebek died Sunday at the age of 80 following a battle with pancreatic cancer.

Exclusive: Go Inside New Jersey’s Newest Medical Marijuana Facility

SECAUCUS, N.J. (CBSNewYork) –  Welcome to Harmony Dispensary, the latest facility to offer medical marijuana in New Jersey. CBS2’s Meg Baker took an exclusive tour Friday in Secaucus. CEO Shaya Brodchandel has a pharmaceutical background. He brought Baker behind-the-scenes into the flowering room, where they suited up in sterile white jumpsuits and sunglasses to protect their eyes from the lights that act as the sun during the growing process. “This cannabis here that we’re growing, we’ll harvest it, dry it, cure it, send it out for testing in the state labs, and then we’ll send it to dispensing for patients,” he said. They use a custom hydroponic filtration system to nourish the two-level farm. Start to finish, Brodchandel says it takes roughly three months to make the finished product. Communications Director Leslie Hoffman says the process to open wasn’t easy – extensive background checks, inspections and fundraising took several years. “We have plenty of medicine. We’ve been growing since October of 2017,” she said. The dispensary has been open for 30 days and serviced 1,000 customers, so far. Doctor recommendations vary, but state law limits patients to two ounces, which cost about $960. Hoffman says their main priority will always be meeting the needs of their patients, but if the state pivots toward legalization , the dispensary will pivot, too. “We’re ready today. We have the product, and we’ve got the space open, and we’re open and we’ve got four point-of-sale positions,” she said. Harmony is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., no appointment necessary. You will need a state issued medical marijuana card. More than 10,000 people have enrolled in New Jersey’s medical marijuana program since Gov. Phil Murphy took office, bringing the total to about 25,000 patients. On Thursday, Jersey City loosened its marijuana laws . But on Friday, New Jersey’s attorney general said the city’s policy to decriminalize marijuana was void because it violates state criminal laws.

Garden City Officials Seek Town’s Input On Changes To Historic Building

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) —  Officials in Garden City are expected to unveil big plans Tuesday night, that could change how a historic Long Island building looks and runs. St. Paul’s School in Garden City has large, gaping holes in the roof and on the ground. Barricades surround the nearly 140-year-old vacant building and there’s no question it needs major work, but this community is torn over what should be done. “If they can keep the outside and just do the inside, I would be all for that,” said Garden City resident Lisa Fedor. “Keeping the facade doesn’t keep the integrity and the history of the building,” said Garden City resident Megan Colon. The village bought the four-story building and the 48 acre plot, back in 1992, right after the school was shut down. While athletic programs use the fields for games, the recreation department and a nursery school utilize some of the smaller buildings. Nevertheless, the building’s monstrous focal point has practically been untouched for more than two decades. “It’s now become a problem for the town I believe, because its just like a white elephant, sitting there,” said Garden City resident Barry Smith. “We need to get moving, the building is falling down,” said Garden City Mayor Brian Daughney. Daughney says he believes designers came up with the perfect concept for the space. He can’t show the plans just yet, but tells CBS2 the proposal would house a hockey rink and a soccer field inside, while renting out other parts of the building. “We want to make it top notch, sort of like what you would see on a university campus,” the mayor said. “We will figure out the financing, obviously, we will figure that out before we put a shovel in the ground and that is all going to be in the works.” Many residents tell us they’re all for reconstructing the old school as long as it’s charm stays. “I would love to see the character remain, it’s a historic building,” said Garden City resident Chris Emmel. Even if that means raising tax dollars to pay for it. “Absolutely, whatever the cost,” said Garden City resident Billy Walsh. If all goes according to plan, construction on the Garden City building could start this spring. The mayor wants to continue to urge residents that this is just a concept and he wants to hear from you about it. A community forum was scheduled for Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Garden City Casino. Officials say another is scheduled at the same location on July 26th, and others will be scheduled in the near future.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — There are a lot of homeless people on the streets on New York, which has lead some to wonder if the city’s homeless problem is growing. CBS2 found one homeless hangout right in the middle of bustling Midtown Manhattan. For Thomas Decoteau, the area most known for the hustle and bustle of daily life in the Big Apple is simply known as the quiet zone. “We recycle all day, doing bottles and cans and when it gets nighttime and really dark we just come here and crash out,” he said. The stretch along Broadway near 40th Street is relatively safe and quiet compared to other parts of the city. “This is where you can come to relax and you’re gonna be amongst homeless people who aren’t gonna rob, aren’t gonna steal from you,” Decoteau said. Occupants say they typically get to the space around midnight every night and sleep surrounded by around 25 other homeless people. Decoteau has been sleeping in the Midtown oasis for years, and says outreach workers check on him every night. He’s still there because the city has labeled his street home a temporary pop up location, not an encampment. Only encampments may be forcibly removed. By the city’s definition, encampments have a visible physical structure that’s difficult to move. Decoteau estimates there are upwards of 100 people staying along the space stretching from 39th to 35th Streets. The Department of Homeless Services refused to discuss the so-called pop up, but insisted last week the homeless situation is under control. “By doubling the number of outreach workers that are out there 24/7 in all five boroughs and in the subways, by tripling the number of special beds, that’s how we’re beginning to turn the tide on a problem that’s built up over many, many years,” Commissioner Steven Banks said. The city says it has helped get more than 1,800 homeless New Yorkers off the streets since 2016.

Sports Betting Open For Business At Meadowlands Racetrack

The Meadowlands Racetrack in East Rutherford started taking sports bets at 11 a.m. Saturday. The track is located in the sports complex where the NFL’s New York Giants and Jets play, about six miles (10 kilometers) from New York City. The daily fantasy sports provider FanDuel is running the space, and says bettors are now able to wager on the World Cup final, men’s and women’s tennis, and Major League Baseball games. Later this year, gamblers will be able to place bets on everything from first downs to wins and losses in all major American sports. “The things that we will be bringing will be like being able to bet in the middle of a game, so that as the score changes the odds change,” FanDuel Chief Operating Officer and President Kip Levin says. It becomes the fourth sports betting outlet in New Jersey, following the state’s U.S. Supreme Court victory in a case that cleared the way for all 50 states to legalize sports betting. Monmouth Park racetrack in Oceanport, near the Jersey shore, and the Borgata and Ocean Resort casinos in Atlantic City had already offered it. Those three outlets took in $16.4 million in sports bets in the first two weeks it was legal. Some of the money raised was bet on events which haven’t even happened yet, like the World Series. In taxes alone, New Jersey has raised almost $294,000. “There was no legislation done in New York, so everybody in New York has to come, if they want to make a legal sports bet, here to the Meadowlands or Monmouth or Atlantic City,” Monmouth Racetrack CEO Jason Settlemoir said. Legislators predicted sports betting would raise 20 to 40 million dollars in tax revenue per year. Thailand Cave Rescue: Time, Oxygen Running Out

MAE SAI, THAILAND (AP)  — Thai rescuers said they will not immediately attempt an underwater evacuation of 12 schoolboys and their soccer coach who have been trapped in a cave for almost two weeks because they have not learned adequate diving skills in the short time since they were found. However, the official in immediate charge of the operation, Gov. Narongsak Osatanakorn, indicated at a news conference Friday that if heavy rains started and appeared to be causing flooded areas in the cave to rise again, divers would try to take the boys out right away. More From CBS News Thai officials had been suggesting in public statements that a quick underwater evacuation of the boys and their coach was needed because of the possibility that access to the cave could soon close again due to seasonal monsoon rains expected this weekend. Earlier efforts to pump out water from the cave have been set back every time there has been a heavy rain. Cave rescue specialists have cautioned against that approach except as a last resort, because of the dangers posed by inexperienced people using diving gear. The path out is considered especially complicated because of twists and turns in narrow flooded passages. The suggestion that the trapped team might have to wait months inside until a safe way out is available — as was the case in 2010 with Chilean miners trapped underground — has met with little enthusiasm. Authorities continue to pursue a third option, which is finding a shaft or drilling into the mountain in which the cave is located to find a sort of back door entrance. The boys, 11 to 16, and their 25-year-old coach went exploring in the cave after a soccer game June 23. Monsoon flooding cut off their escape and prevented rescuers from finding them for almost 10 days. The only way to reach them was by navigating dark and tight passageways filled with muddy water and strong currents. Asked at his midnight news conference about bringing the boys out underwater, the governor replied, “Not today because they cannot dive at this time.” Narongsak said the boys were still healthy and have practiced wearing diving masks and breathing in preparation for the diving possibility. The rescue effort suffered a disheartening setback Friday with the death of a former Thai navy SEAL diving in the flooded passageways to deliver supplies, as authorities raced against worsening weather and lessening oxygen. Professional cave divers from Europe are making the dangerous dives with a contingent of Thai navy SEALs. Two divers from the U.K. were the first to make it, on Monday, to the area where the boys and their coach took shelter. The divers are making frequent swims in and out. The death of former Thai navy SEAL Saman Gunan underscored the risks of making the underwater journey. The diver, the first fatality of the rescue effort, was working in a volunteer capacity and died on a mission to place oxygen canisters along the route to where the boys and others are sheltered, Thai SEAL commander Rear Adm. Arpakorn Yookongkaew said. The strategically placed canisters allow divers to stay underwater longer during the five-hour trip to reach the stranded team. While underwater, Saman passed out and efforts to resuscitate him failed, Arpakorn said. Some officials said his collapse was due to his oxygen supply running out, but the cause of his collapse was not confirmed. “Despite this, we will continue until we accomplish our mission,” Arpakorn vowed. Narongsak acknowledged that the air supply inside the cave is “a big problem.” Workers have been trying to run an oxygen line into the cave’s chambers. “We are carrying oxygen canisters to where the boys are,” Narongsak said. The dramatic rescue efforts and the boys’ plight have garnered international attention, perhaps most notably at soccer’s most widely watched event, the World Cup. A diver who spent time with the boys said earlier the youngsters wanted to know the results of the matches. Players from teams including England and Sweden have recorded good luck video messages for the trapped boys, and FIFA has invited the 13 to the World Cup final should they be rescued in time and are healthy enough to travel. Elon Musk, the entrepreneur behind the Tesla automobile and the SpaceX rocket company, has said he would send engineers to help. One of his enterprises is Boring Co., which digs tunnels for advanced transport systems and has advanced ground-penetrating radar. Musk also brainstormed on Twitter about possible technology for a safe evacuation, suggesting that an air tunnel constructed with soft tubing like a Bouncy Castle could provide flexible passage out. New York City Restaurants Swapping Traditional Seating For Stools To Increase Turnover

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) –  Many bars and restaurants are ditching traditional dining chairs in favor of stools to increase turnover and profits. At the Gristmill in Brooklyn, stools make up half the seating. “Outside of like Bay Ridge, every restaurant is tiny,” said owner Jake Novick-Finder. When he opened the restaurant two years ago, he furnished it with a different kind of stool. “You can’t have backs to barstools in a New York City-sized restaurant,” he said. Novick-Finder had a carpenter specifically design stools for the eatery that are small enough to fit six people to a table that’s intended for four. He promises they won’t hurt your back. “For years, architects have designed restaurant seating and quick casual places intentionally make your back hurt so you get up quicker, so you turn over that table. We are trying to be a little more hospitable, inviting, encouraging,” he said. In New York City, it’s common for restaurants to seat customers right on top of each other to make enough profit for the day. “Restaurants are really gigantic real estate businesses. They’re selling or leasing seats for the night,” said Stephen Zagor, lead instructor at the Institute of Culinary Education. He said a check is like a customer paying rent for their seat, and the more bodies a place can fit, the better. “If I can count on someone coming to that seat and spending X amount of money, that would be a real value to me,” Zagor said. The Open Table app even has a feature to reserve a seat at a restaurant’s bar and says high-tops make up roughly 15 percent of the country’s restaurant inventory. Many were all-for the idea Friday. “If you’re having a quick bite, you can pop in and hop on a bar stool,” one man said. “It helps with the space, yes,” said a woman. But not everyone was on board. “It’s easy for the kids to fall off,” a Park Slope mom said. According to the Culinary Institute of America, some restaurants have found they can increase profits by more than 50 percent when using bar stools vs. regular chairs and tables.
