ATLANTA (AP) — Manny Machado hit his first home run for Los Angeles, Rich Hill pitched seven dominant innings and the Dodgers routed the Atlanta Braves 8-2 on Thursday night. Machado, acquired last week from Baltimore to add even more punch to a team that leads the National League in homers, went deep in his seventh game with the Dodgers. He lined a fastball into the left-field seats leading off the sixth against Anibal Sanchez, Machado’s 25th homer of the season overall. Hill (4-4) limited the Braves to three hits and a walk while striking out seven, and he even picked up his first RBI of the season. Atlanta managed only one scoring threat against the 38-year-old left-hander, which wasn’t even of Hill’s doing. With two outs in the sixth, Freddie Freeman reached when Machado’s wild throw from third got knocked out of Cody Bellinger’s glove as the first baseman tried to swipe Freeman with a tag. Nick Markakis walked on four pitches — the lone time Atlanta got a runner as far as second base against Hill — but Kurt Suzuki hit an inning-ending flyout. While Sanchez (5-3) turned in another solid outing for the Braves, defensive blunders and a lack of offense ruined his night. Shortstop Charlie Culberson’s throwing error in the fifth led to an unearned run. Another errant throw by second baseman Ozzie Albies in the seventh set up Hill’s run-scoring single, which finished off the Braves starter. Rodon (3-3) took a no-hitter deep into the sixth and finished with eight strikeouts in 7 2/3 innings. He yielded three walks, but worked quickly and smoothly while the White Sox earned back-to-back victories for the second time in July. Nicky Delmonico added an RBI single in the eighth as the White Sox took the first two games of a four-game series between two major-market AL teams with zero playoff victories in this decade. Rodon retired 15 consecutive Angels between Mike Trout’s first-inning walk and David Fletcher’s two-out walk in the sixth. NEW YORK (AP) — Jacob deGrom’s winless streak reached five games as the major league ERA leader was hurt by a pair of errors behind him, and the San Diego Padres beat the New York Mets 3-2 Monday night in a matchup of teams with the worst records in the National League. Rookie left-hander Joey Lucchesi (5-5), brought back from the minor leagues, baffled the Mets for the much of the evening with his churve, a combination curveball-chanegup at about 80 mph. Manuel Margot hit a go-ahead triple in a two-run fifth inning after right fielder Jose Bautista dropped Christian Villanueva’s fly ball. The Padres made it 3-1 in the sixth when Wil Myers doubled and scored when charging shortstop Amed Rosario let Eric Hosmer’s chopper get under his glove and bounce into the outfield. DeGrom (5-5), whose ERA rose from 1.68 to 1.71, allowed three runs — two earned — and five hits in eight innings, striking out 10 and walking two. He has given up three runs or fewer in 17 consecutive appearances and became the first pitcher to win fewer than seven games in his first 20 starts with an ERA below 2.00 since earned runs started being compiled in 1912, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. New York, just 40-57 despite an 11-1 start, dealt closer Jeurys Familia last weekend and is considering trading deGrom, who is eligible for free agency after the 2020 season. DeGrom’s agent said during the All-Star break he would prefer either a long-term contract or a trade. “We love him. LAFC (10-4-5) goalkeeper Tyler Miller parried away Sebastian Blanco’s close-range blast in the 70th minute and had six saves for his sixth shutout of the year. Lee Nguyen was sent off in the 84th minute when his cleat caught Blanco’s leg. LAFC remained unbeaten at home in all nine matches this season. New York came into the game last in the National League in batting average and was tied with San Diego for the third-fewest runs scored in the majors. He struck out seven and allowed just one hit through the first five innings. The 28-year old right-hander opened the season with a victory against Miami on April 11 and then defeated the Padres two weeks later. The victory snapped a 13-start winless streak and was Wheeler’s first victory at Citi Field this season, despite allowing just 10 earned runs over his last 37 2-3 innings at home. New York roughed up Austin Voth (0-1), who was making his major league debut. After a quiet first inning that included the 26-year old right-hander striking out Mets leadoff hitter Brandon Nimmo on three pitches, Voth ran into immediate trouble in the second. Flores singled to lead off the frame and moved to second on a Plawecki single. Voth was unable to help his own cause, pausing for too long after fielding Jose Reyes’ chopper to throw out the still speedy infielder. Amed Rosario remained hot, singling through the right side to score Flores with the first run of the game. Wheeler lofted a sacrifice fly and Nimmo drove in a run with a groundout to give New York a three-run lead. The Mets reached Voth for four in the fifth, three coming on Conforto’s first home run since June 26. Voth, who did not pitch in his two prior stints with Washington allowed all seven runs and struck out three. He was the fourth starting pitcher to make his major league against the Mets, but was the first to suffer a loss. Brandishing a fastball that touched 97 and an assortment of breaking pitches, Wheeler was able to keep Washington off-balance until the Nationals finally broke through on Bryce Harper’s RBI single in the sixth. It was the 50th multihomer game for Pujols, who went back-to-back with Justin Upton in the sixth. David Fletcher also homered in the first off Mariners starter James Paxton, who left the game with lower back stiffness after Pujols connected. Paxton (8-4) gave up three runs and three hits in two-thirds of an inning, throwing just 17 pitches in his final start of the first half. Skaggs (7-5), who missed nine games with a hamstring strain, gave up one run on five hits with five strikeouts and a walk. The left-hander has allowed one earned or less in six consecutive outings, the longest such streak from an Angels starter since George Brunet in 1968. Fletcher hit the first home run of his career and gave the Angels their third leadoff home run this season. Ian Kinsler had the other two. Upton’s home run was his 18th and gave the Angels a commanding 8-1 lead in the sixth. The Angels took two of three from Seattle and have won three of their past four series. The one they lost was last weekend in Seattle. The Angels had lost five of their last six against the Mariners before the series began. The Mariners grabbed a 1-0 lead on Kyle Seager’s RBI single in the first inning, but it was all Angels after that. After Fletcher’s homer, Pujols’ two-run shot gave the Angels a 3-1 advantage. Kole Calhoun made it 4-1 in the second on a sacrifice fly, and the Angels increased their lead to 5-1 in the fifth on an RBI single from Kinsler. Mike Trout scored three runs and stole a base, making him the second player all-time, along with Joe Morgan in 1974, to compile 100 hits, 80 walks and 15 steals before the All-Star break. Mariners infielder Andrew Romine entered as a pitcher in the eighth to face his former team and the right-hander retired Trout (fly ball) and Pujols (grounder) before giving up a two-run single to Kinsler, who had three hits. ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Shohei Ohtani’s pinch-hit home run in the seventh inning sent Andrew Heaney and the Los Angeles Angels to a 4-3 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday. Heaney allowed only three hits and tied a career high with 10 strikeouts in seven innings to help the Angels take two of three at home in the Freeway Series. He gave up a three-run homer to Yasiel Puig, who later left with an oblique injury. Ohtani drove his first career pinch-hit homer a projected 443 feet to center field, breaking a 3-all tie. It also was the Angels’ first pinch-hit home run of the season. The two-way rookie star from Japan, unavailable to pitch because of an elbow injury, fouled a ball off his knee one day earlier and experienced soreness. He was not in the starting lineup and it was unclear if he would be able to come off the bench. But he did, and Ohtani hit a 2-2 pitch from reliever JT Chargois (2-2) for his seventh home run of the season. Albert Pujols also went deep for the Angels, tying the score at 3 in the sixth. Justin Upton had a two-run single. Puig homered in the second after Heaney (5-6) walked two batters in the inning. The left-hander was dominant after that. Justin Anderson allowed a single in the ninth but got Cody Bellinger to ground into a game-ending double play for his fourth save. Puig exited during an at-bat in the fifth with a strained right oblique. He grimaced in pain and hunched over after taking a swing. In the third inning, the Dodgers elected to intentionally walk Mike Trout to load the bases with two outs. Upton, who had struggled with runners in scoring position, hit a two-run single to center to pull the Angels to 3-2. Pujols tied the game with a solo home run, his 13th of the season, in the sixth. Trout has been walked intentionally 16 times this season, which is the ninth-most before the All-Star break in American League history. John Olerud had the most in the AL with 22 in 1993. Alex Wood had won four consecutive starts before Sunday, but didn’t factor into the decision. He allowed three runs and four hits in six innings.
