Dodgers Topple The Braves, 5-1

ATLANTA (AP)  — Yasiel Puig homered and drove in three runs following his return from the disabled list, Alex Wood pitched 5 2/3 scoreless innings to win his sixth straight decision and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the struggling Atlanta Braves 5-1 on Saturday night. Reinstated after missing 15 games with a right oblique strain, Puig made it 1-0 with a sacrifice fly in the second off Max Fried and pushed the lead to 3-0 in the sixth with his 12th homer , a towering shot off Luke Jackson that bounced off the third-level scoreboard facade in left field. Wood (7-5) allowed one hit and four walks with five strikeouts. His performance followed Rich Hill’s seven scoreless innings Thursday and Clayton Kershaw’s one run allowed in 7 2/3 innings Friday against an Atlanta offense that led the NL for most of the first half of the season. The Braves, second in the NL East, have lost four straight and 13 of 18 mostly because their bats have been quieted. They’ve averaged 2.2 runs over their last 13 defeats and have dropped to fifth in NL runs scored. Johan Camargo accounted for Atlanta’s offense with a homer off Caleb Ferguson in the seventh. Puig hit the Dodgers’ 143rd homer, tops in the NL for the West Division leaders. Wood stranded a runner in scoring position in the first and second as he improved to 6-0 with a 2.61 ERA in his last seven starts since he lost at home to the Braves on June 9. He didn’t get a chance to face Tyler Flowers with two runners on in the sixth. Flowers began the game with seven hits and eight RBIs in 11 career at-bats against Wood, so Dodgers manager Dave Roberts brought in J.T. Chargois. Flowers struck out. Los Angeles led 1-0 in the second when Enrique Hernandez singled and scored on Puig’s sacrifice fly. They went up 5-1 in the ninth on RBI singles by Chris Taylor and Manny Machado. Fried (1-4) allowed one run, two hits and three walks with seven strikeouts in five innings. He was reinstated from the disabled list after missing 14 games with a left middle finger blister. TRAINER’S ROOM Braves manager Brian Snitker said 2B Ozzie Albies was held out of the lineup on a scheduled night off to rest his right hamstring. Injured last week at Washington, Albies missed four games. He returned Thursday and went 1-for-8 with four strikeouts over the next two games. He singled as a pinch-hitter in the seventh, and Snitker plans to have him back in the lineup Sunday. The 21-year-old Albies, an All-Star in his first full seasons in the majors, is one of two NL players with 20 homers and 10 stolen bases. TRANSACTIONS The Dodgers optioned OF Alex Verdugo to Triple-A Oklahoma City to make room for Puig on the roster. … The Braves optioned OF Preston Tucker to Triple-A Gwinnett to make room for Fried. UP NEXT Dodgers: RHP Ross Stripling (8-2, 2.43 ERA) allowed five runs and seven hits in 4 2/3 innings of his last start, a no-decision that the Dodgers won last Monday at Philadelphia. Braves: LHP Sean Newcomb (9-5, 3.41 ERA) gave up one run and four hits in six innings of his last start, a victory last Monday at Miami. Rodon Strong, Moncada HRs To Send White Sox Past Angels 4-2

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Carlos Rodon pitched two-hit ball into the eighth inning, Yoan Moncada homered in the seventh and the Chicago White Sox beat the Los Angeles Angels 4-2 on Tuesday night. Rodon (3-3) took a no-hitter deep into the sixth and finished with eight strikeouts in 7 2/3 innings. He yielded three walks, but worked quickly and smoothly while the White Sox earned back-to-back victories for the second time in July. Nicky Delmonico added an RBI single in the eighth as the White Sox took the first two games of a four-game series between two major-market AL teams with zero playoff victories in this decade. Rodon retired 15 consecutive Angels between Mike Trout’s first-inning walk and David Fletcher’s two-out walk in the sixth. Andrelton Simmons singled to center to break up the no-hit bid but got caught rounding first base too far by alert third baseman Yolmer Sanchez after Fletcher slid in safely. The Angels chased Rodon and rallied in the eighth with Fletcher’s RBI double and Trout’s two-out, bases-loaded walk from reliever Juan Minaya. Jeanmar Gomez then got Justin Upton on a shallow flyout to end the rally. Felix Pena (1-1) pitched six innings of four-hit ball for the Angels (50-52), who fell two games below .500 for the first time all season. Los Angeles has lost four of five on its 10-game homestand. Joakim Soria pitched the ninth for his 16th save in 19 chances, retiring pinch-hitter Shohei Ohtani on a fly to center for the second out. The 25-year-old Rodon was outstanding in his seventh start since returning to the mound in June after shoulder surgery last September. The Angels’ season-long struggles against left-handed pitching also continued against Rodon. The club was batting .219 against lefties entering the game, and the Angels didn’t even come close to getting a hit in the first five innings, mostly striking out or grounding out meekly. Pena, a reliever pressed into a rotation spot by the Angels’ staggering list of injuries to their starting pitchers, struggled with control but largely kept Los Angeles in the game. Chicago cobbled together two runs in the third inning on Jose Abreu’s bases-loaded walk and Avisail Garcia’s sacrifice fly. Moncada interrupted his 1-for-15 slump since the All-Star break by going 2 for 4 with a walk and a homer to right off reliever Noe Ramirez in the seventh. TRAINER’S ROOM White Sox: Garcia went 0 for 3 with that RBI after sitting out the start of Monday’s game with chest pressure and an elevated heartbeat. He played Monday night as a defensive replacement after a quick trip to a local hospital. Angels: Simmons was hit in the left hand by a pitch from Minaya in the eighth inning. The Gold Glove shortstop writhed on the ground for a moment, but eventually took his base. UP NEXT White Sox: James Shields (4-11, 4.26 ERA) is 0-6 in his last eight road appearances, including seven starts. He hasn’t won on the road since opening day at Kansas City. Angels: Tyler Skaggs (7-6, 2.68 ERA) has a 1.43 ERA over his last seven starts, ranking second in the AL in that span. He has faced the White Sox just once, and it was back in July 2014. Keuchel Takes No-Hitter Into 7th, Astros Top Angels 3-1

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Dallas Keuchel took a no-hitter into the seventh and finished with 7 2/3 innings of two-hit ball in the Houston Astros’ 3-1 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Friday night. Justin Upton broke up Keuchel’s bid with two outs in the seventh when his line drive escaped the glove of leaping Astros shortstop Marwin Gonzalez. The Angel Stadium scorer awarded a hit instead of an error on what would have been a fine defensive play if Gonzalez had held on. Keuchel (8-8) shrugged it off and improved to 5-0 in his last seven appearances for the Astros (65-35), who are off to the second-best start through 100 games in franchise history. Josh Reddick had an RBI triple for the Astros. Only last season’s World Series champions got off to a better start than these Astros, who are 15 games ahead of the injury-plagued Angels (49-49) in the AL West. Keuchel retired the Angels’ first nine batters before walking David Fletcher to open the fourth. The heavily bearded lefty then retired the Angels’ next 11 batters before Upton’s hit with solid defensive help, getting within seven outs of the first no-hitter by a left-handed pitcher in the history of the Astros, who have 11 no-hitters. Yuli Gurriel made an impressive diving catch on Upton’s liner to first base to end the fourth inning, and Kyle Tucker plucked Andrelton Simmons’ sinking liner right before it hit the left-field grass leading off the seventh. Mike Trout went 0 for 3 and Shohei Ohtani struck out three times against Keuchel, who left to a big ovation after Jabari Blash’s sacrifice fly in the eighth. Gonzalez nearly made the play to save the no-hitter, but the 6-foot-1 shortstop couldn’t quite hang onto Upton’s liner. Houston’s regular shortstop, injured Carlos Correa, is 6-foot-4. Ian Kinsler added a clean leadoff single in the eighth and scored on Blash’s first RBI for the Angels. Hector Rondon pitched the ninth for his ninth save. He got a generous call to strike out Trout, who went 0 for 4 for only the second time since June 8. The Astros piled up five singles and scored two runs off Tyler Skaggs (7-6) in the first two innings before Reddick’s drive down the right-field line scored Evan Gattis in the third for a 3-0 lead. Skaggs settled into six innings of six-hit ball in yet another strong start, but the left-hander took just his second loss since May. SHOHEI THROWS Before Ohtani went 0 for 3 as the Angels’ designated hitter, he  played catch in the outfield for the second straight day since getting approval to begin a throwing program. The two-way rookie took six weeks off from throwing to rest the sprained ligament in his pitching elbow after getting treatment with platelet-rich plasma and stem cells. The Angels hope he’ll pitch again this season. TRAINER’S ROOM Astros: Correa won’t return from his lower back injury until after this five-game road trip. He has been out since June 25, and he hasn’t resumed baseball activities while making “slow but steady progress,” manager AJ Hinch said. Angels: Albert Pujols is scheduled to return to the lineup Monday, manager Mike Scioscia said. The 38-year-old slugger went on the disabled list July 13 with left knee inflammation, one day after hitting his 629th and 630th career homers. … Reliever Jim Johnson pitched a scoreless rehab inning for Triple-A Salt Lake. He has been out since June 12 with a lumbar strain, but should be back in LA’s bullpen shortly. UP NEXT Astros: Justin Verlander (9-5, 2.29 ERA) went winless in his final six starts before the All-Star break, but has already beaten the Angels twice this year, allowing two runs in 16 innings. Angels: Nick Tropeano (3-4, 4.83 ERA) returns from a 31-game injury absence with right shoulder inflammation. LOS ANGELES (AP)  — Yasmani Grandal homered, Enrique Hernandez hit a solo shot on his first pitch in the seventh inning for the go-ahead run, and the Los Angeles Dodgers rallied for a 5-3 win over the Angels on Sunday to gain a split in the Freeway Series. Each team won three games in the season series, with four decided by one run. The Dodgers ended the first half with a National League-leading 129 homers, tying their record for the most homers before the All-Star break set in 2000. All-Star Max Muncy leads the team with 22. The Dodgers (53-43) head into the break atop the NL West by a half-game over Arizona. The Angels continue heading in the opposite direction. They fell to 49-48 and are 14 games behind the AL West-leading Astros. All-Star Kenley Jansen retired the side in the ninth for his 27th save a day after serving up a 10th-inning homer to Kole Calhoun in the Dodgers’ 5-4 loss. The Angels’ Jefry Marte blasted a three-run homer on his first pitch from Clayton Kershaw to tie the game 3-all in the fourth. Justin Upton led off with an infield single to Kershaw and Ian Kinsler followed with a single to set up Marte’s fourth homer of the season. The Dodgers led 3-0 in the second. Grandal homered, Hernandez hit a sacrifice fly to center field and Kershaw helped himself with a two-out RBI single. Kershaw didn’t figure in the decision, allowing three runs and six hits in 6 2/3 innings of his fifth start since coming off the disabled list. He struck out eight and walked four on 108 pitches, the most he’s thrown since working under restrictions in his first four outings back. Kershaw escaped a bases-loaded jam in the first. He retired seven in a row before the Angels got to him in the fourth. Kershaw gave up a two-out walk to All-Star Mike Trout in the seventh and was replaced by Kenta Maeda (7-5), who got out of a bases-loaded situation by striking out Kinsler. Maeda had one strikeout in one-third of an inning. Taylor Cole (0-2) took the loss, allowing one run and three hits in two innings. He struck out one. Trout was 2 for 10 in the three-game series. He walked twice Sunday, extending his franchise record for walks in the first half to 84. Angels starter Deck McGuire gave up three runs and four hits in three innings. He struck out two and walked two. Marte and Matt Kemp of the Dodgers snapped their bats in two over their knees in frustration after striking out to end the first and fifth innings, respectively. Kole Calhoun Homers In Top Of 10th Inning, Angels Beat Dodgers 5-4

LOS ANGELES  (AP) —  Kole Calhoun homered on his first pitch from All-Star closer Kenley Jansen in the 10th inning, lifting the Los Angeles Angels to a 5-4 victory over the Dodgers on Saturday night after the Angels blew two leads in the Freeway Series. Four of the Angels’ five games against the Dodgers this season have been decided by one run. The Angels lead the season series 3-2. Angels manager Mike Scioscia equaled fellow catcher-turned-manager Ralph Houk for 18th on the career victories list with his 1,619th. Calhoun’s ninth homer went over the right-field wall with two outs against Jansen (0-3). The Angels led 3-0 in the second and 4-3 in the seventh before the Dodgers rallied twice to tie the game. The Dodgers put the potential tying run on in the bottom of the 10th when Andrew Toles doubled to deep left. Justin Upton collided with the wall trying to make the catch and the trainer came out to check on him, although he stayed in the game. Toles took third on a passed ball by but pinch-hitter Chase Utley flied out to center and Yasmani Grandal struck out swinging against Jose Alvarez (4-3) to end the game. The Dodgers tied it 4-all in the ninth. Grandal doubled to deep left off Blake Parker. Upton chased the ball to the wall, allowing Utley to score from first on a one-legged slide that narrowly beat the throw to the plate. The Dodgers went on to load the bases, but pinch-hitter Joc Pederson flied out to center to send the game to the 10th. Upton hit a go-ahead, two-out homer, his 19th, in the seventh to put the Angels back in front 4-3. He went 2 for 4 with two strikeouts and a walk, drove in two other runs and scored a run. Angels All-Star Mike Trout was limited to a single in four at-bats with a walk and a strikeout. The Dodgers had threatened in the eighth when they got the potential tying and go-ahead runs on. All-Star Matt Kemp singled leading off and took second on Parker’s wild pitch. After striking out Max Muncy, Parker walked Pederson and struck out Cody Bellinger. Toles flied out to left-center, although Upton and Trout nearly collided before Upton made the catch. Chris Taylor tied the game 3-all in the fifth with a leadoff homer, giving the Dodgers 127 home runs, which leads the National League. They are two shy of tying the team record for most homers before the All-Star break set in 2000. The Dodgers trailed 3-2 in the second. David Fletcher had a sacrifice fly and Upton drew a bases-loaded, two-out walk that scored Heaney, who reached on an infield single to first. After two messy innings, Wood settled down to retire 12 of his final 14 batters. Scherzer Leads Nationals To Victory Over Mets

NEW YORK (AP) — Max Scherzer isn’t going to begin a debate over who should start the All-Star Game for the National League. He’s content to let others sort that out while he keeps winning. Scherzer made a final pitch to start the Midsummer Classic on his own mound, Anthony Rendon hit two homers and Bryce Harper also connected, leading the Washington Nationals over the New York Mets 5-4 Thursday night. Scherzer (12-5) didn’t dominate over his seven innings, but managed to tie Philadelphia’s Aaron Nola for the NL lead in wins. He struck out five, boosting his league-leading total to 182. Scherzer deflected a question on whether he should get the start, saying it was “an All-Star question” that he’d talk about at the right time. Before the game, Nationals manager Dave Martinez was more definitive. “I don’t want to be biased,” he said, “but Max Scherzer, yeah, of course.” Fans at Citi Field would rather see Mets ace Jacob deGrom make the start — he tops the majors with a 1.68 ERA, but is just 5-4 in 19 starts because of poor run support. “I know how good he is,” Scherzer said. “He’s having a great year.” Washington won for just the sixth time in 17 games and nudged back over .500 at 47-46. Manny Machado Blasts 2 HRs As Last-Place Orioles Top Yankees

BALTIMORE (AP) — Manny Machado hit two home runs, Jonathan Schoop singled in the winning run with two outs in the ninth inning, and the Baltimore Orioles rallied past the New York Yankees 6-5 Tuesday night. Greg Bird homered and drove in four runs for the Yankees, who own an inexplicable 4-5 record against the last-place Orioles. Machado brought the Orioles back from deficits of 3-2 and 5-3 before Schoop won it in the ninth against Dellin Betances (1-3). A hit batter, a double by Adam Jones and an intentional walk to Machado loaded the bases with one out. After Mark Trumbo struck out, Schoop hit a bouncer that glanced off the glove of Bird at first base and into right field. Zach Britton (1-0) worked the ninth for Baltimore. Bird hit a three-run homer and added a sacrifice fly to help New York go up by two runs in the seventh. But the lead wouldn’t last. Machado had a solo shot in the fifth and a two-run homer in the seventh. Rumored to be traded before the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline, Machado has five multihomer games this season and 19 for his career. Orioles starter Andrew Cashner gave up five runs and five hits in 6 1/3 innings. He has gone eight straight starts without a victory. After retiring the first 13 Yankees in order, Cashner gave up a single, issued a walk and yielded a home run to Bird. Machado homered on the first pitch in the bottom half to tie it at 3. The pattern continued in the seventh. After Bird hit a sacrifice fly and Neil Walker singled in a run, Machado made it 5-all with an opposite-field drive to right off Chad Green. Coming off the disabled list after being sidelined for a month with two sore hamstrings, Yankees starter Masahiro Tanaka allowed three runs in 4 1/3 innings. He was pulled, as planned, after throwing 80 pitches. TRAINER’S ROOM Yankees: 2B Gleyber Torres (hip) will begin to ramp up baseball activities this week, manager Aaron Boone said. The hope is that Torres returns soon after the All-Star break. … C Gary Sanchez (groin) participated in batting practice. Boone says the club will map out a rehab stint of at least one game with a timeline for a return similar to that of Torres. Orioles: OF Jace Peterson sat out the game after bruising his knee in a collision with the wall on Monday night. … RHP Chris Tillman (back) allowed four earned runs over 6 1/3 innings for Class A Frederick. He will likely get one more rehab start before the Orioles decide if they want him back in the majors, where he’s 1-5 with a 10.46 ERA this season. FRESH ARMS The Orioles recalled LHP Donnie Hart from Triple-A Norfolk and selected the contract of RHP Jhan Marinez from Norfolk.
