Alex Trebek Donated 62 Acres Of Open Space Near Runyon Canyon

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) – Beloved “Jeopardy!” host Alex Trebek, who passed away over the weekend , was a major advocate for conservation, as evidenced by a significant donation of land he made in the Hollywood Hills over 20 years ago. (Credit: MRCA) Many Angelenos may not be aware that, in the late 1990s, Trebek purchased 62 acres of land between Runyon and Nichols canyons and donated it as public space. The area, known as “Trebek Open Space,” was donated to the Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority, a public agency which manages 75,000 acres in the Santa Monica Mountains. The land was purchased by Trebek for $2 million in 1998, according to the Los Angeles Times. It has trails for hikers, mountain bikers and horseback riding. Trebek died Sunday at the age of 80 following a battle with pancreatic cancer.

Wildfire roars to life again

CALIFORNIA, USA (AP) — Southern California’s huge wildfire roared to life again Tuesday in a mountain wilderness area even as many neighbourhoods were reopened to thousands of residents who fled its advance last week.A massive plume rose suddenly at mid-morning in the Santa Monica Mountains near the community of Lake Sherwood, prompting authorities to send aircraft to drop retardant and water on the blaze.

SANTA MONICA (CBSLA) – Actor Ving Rhames said he was held at gunpoint by police at his own Santa Monica home two years ago when he was mistaken by neighbors for a robber. The Santa Monica Police Department said Saturday that the incident was one of two which prompted the department to launch its “Meet Your Neighbors” program. (Getty Images) Neighbors allegedly called 911 to report two black people, one of which being Rhames, had supposedly broke into residences that turned out to be their own. Rhames for the first time publicly discussed the incident Friday to a radio audience. Rhames, appearing on Sirius XM’s “The Clay Cane” show, said that he was watching ESPN when he heard knocking at his door. “I open the door, there’s a red dot pointed at my face from a nine millimeter,” Rhames said. He was ordered to put his hands in the air, adding that there were at least four officers and a police dog at his house. The incident occurred at 1:52 a.m. on July 29, 2016 when several neighbors reported that “a black male was seen entering a residence and did not live there,” police said in a statement. “As officers were assessing the residence, they encountered the resident at the front door. Officers recognized the resident and the situation was quickly deescalated with no use of force occurring. The resident was identified as Ving Rhames.” Lt. Saul Rodriguez also said a similar occurred September 6, 2015, and involved Fay Wells, a black woman who had locked herself out of her apartment. Wells, who earned an MBA from Dartmouth University, and was a vice president of strategy at a company at the time, wrote about the incident in the Washington Post. In the piece, Wells wrote that she called for a locksmith and once inside her apartment heard a man’s voice and what sounded like a small dog whimpering outside. “I imagined a loiterer and opened the door to move him along. I was surprised to see a large dog halfway up the staircase to my door. I stepped back inside, closed the door and locked it. I heard barking. I approached my front window and loudly asked what was going on. Peering through my blinds I saw a gun. “A man stood at the bottom of the stairs, pointing it at me. I stepped back and heard ‘Come outside with your hands up.”‘ Wells said she later learned that the Santa Monica Police Department had dispatched 19 officers after one of her neighbors reported a burglary at her apartment. Hence, the police department launched a city-wide “Meet Your Neighbors” program on Jan. 30, 2017, according to a department news statement. “The key to this event is simple engagement and community building through a coffee date or ice cream social, for example,” the statement said. “Our challenge to the community is to step out of their comfort zone and get to know the people on their block — their neighbors.” Jacqueline Seabrooks, the first female black patrol officer for the Santa Monica Police Department in 1982, and California’s first black woman to serve as police chief for a municipality when she became chief of the Inglewood Police Department in 2007, began her tenure as Santa Monica’s police chief in 2012, retiring Sept. 30, 2017. MALIBU (CBSLA) — The remains of a young mountain lion who made the news earlier this year for peering through the door of a Westlake Village home have been found, according to the National Park Service. (credit: National Park Service) P-55 was estimated to be just three years old, but biologists say he had already crossed the busy 101 Freeway twice – first heading north, then crossing to go back south of the freeway. The lion, whose cause of death is not known, was found in the central Santa Monica Mountains, in the hills above Malibu, National Park Service Ranger Kate Kuykendall said. P-55’s collar had failed to signal his death, and by the time biologists found his remains, they were already too decomposed to make a determination. P-55 seemed to be healthy, Kuykendall said, so it’s possible he died of rodenticide poisoning or fought with another male lion, although there are no signs of a struggle where the lion’s remains were found. The lion was photographed in February by a Westlake Village mother, whose son spotted P-55 peering in through their sliding glass door. He generally roamed the northwest end of the Santa Monica Mountains, west of Las Virgines Road and north of Mulholland. (credit: Nadine Young)

Flex Alert Issued Due To High Temperatures Across The West

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — With triple-digit temperatures forecast across much of Southern California Tuesday, the state has issued a Flex Alert to urge electricity conservation for high-usage hours. The hottest days of the heat wave are expected to be Tuesday and Wednesday, raising concerns for power outages, heat-related illnesses, and wildfire danger. “Consumers are urged to conserve electricity especially during the late afternoon and evening, when air conditioners typically are at peak use,” a California ISO statement said. “Consumers can help avoid power interruptions by turning off all unnecessary lights, using major appliances before 5 p.m. and after 9 p.m., and setting air conditioners to 78 degrees or higher.” High temperatures across the western U.S. prompted the Flex Alert. The excessive heat warning will be in force along the L.A. County coast, in beach cities, metropolitan Los Angeles, Downtown L.A., and the Hollywood Hills; the San Gabriel, San Fernando, Santa Clarita and Antelope valleys; the San Gabriel and Santa Monica mountains; and inland Orange County, where highs will range from the mid-90s to 104. It will expire at 8 p.m. Thursday. Also in effect was a less serious heat advisory scheduled to expire in Orange County at 9 p.m. Thursday. There won’t be much relief from the heat along the coasts, but people seeking to cool down in the ocean should beware of bigger waves and strong rip currents. A high surf advisory will be in force in L.A. and Orange counties until 9 p.m. Wednesday and surf of 4-7 feet is expected through Wednesday night in L.A and Ventura counties, with maximum sets to 9 feet. LOS ANGELES (CBSLA/AP) — Monsoonal flow has brought thunderstorms and strong winds to the deserts of Southern California have moved into Los Angeles proper. An urban and small stream flood was advisory for San Bernardino and Riverside counties early Wednesday morning and was canceled around 4:30 a.m. when the threat of flooding ended. That same system moved into Los Angeles County just before lunchtime, bringing rain, thunder and lightning to cities like Glendale, Beverly Hills and the San Fernando Valley. Lightning strikes prompted city officials in Santa Monica to order the evacuation of ocean and beach areas, and advise people to move indoors on the famed Santa Monica Pier. Further inland, lightning kept water-dropping helicopters grounded in the battle against a small brush fire in the Encino area. Man Found Stabbed To Death Outside Santa Monica Hospital

SANTA MONICA (CBSLA) – A man in his 40s was found stabbed to death outside a Santa Monica hospital Friday morning. The victim was discovered deceased on a bench on the property of St. John’s Hospital located at 2121 Santa Monica Blvd. The victim was found by a security guard, according to Santa Monica police. The victim’s name was not released. Detectives did not disclose if they had a motive or any suspect information. Authorities are asking for any witnesses to come forward and call detectives at 310-458-8491.
