By state mandate, the sign honoring Sandra Wilson is a drab brown and white, hues that cannot represent the colorful joy and light she brought into so many lives. “She loved everything that was around her, and she always showed love to everyone,” said her brother Ronnie Wilson. Stretch Of Highway 45 Renamed In Honor Of Sandra Wilson
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Food pantries around New York City are scaling up their operations so families in need can have a hot meal for Thanksgiving . A truck filled with 120 frozen turkeys rolled up 159th Street to the Community League of the Heights, known as CLOTH, pantry Friday. The birds will be stored in a freezer until they are ready to go next week. “It’s important to me, because not everybody is fortunate to get stuff. Putting a smile on a person’s face definitely puts a smile on my face, too,” Tassan Simon, of City Harvest, told CBS2’s Natalie Duddridge. Food pantries around New York City are scaling up their operations so families in need can have a hot meal for Thanksgiving. So she ramped up efforts to help her Washington Heights community. “We usually serve about 200 to 300 people a week. That number in March, April and May doubled, tripled, quadrupled. In the last eight months, we’ve served over 140,000 people,” she told Duddridge. Meal deliveries change each week, depending on what food the pantry receives. Next week, it will be extra special for Thanksgiving. “What someone would have on Thanksgiving – the stuffing, the sides, cranberry sauce,” said Allison. Before the pandemic, City Harvest rescued about 66 million pounds of food annually that would have otherwise gone to waste. This year, the goal is nearly double that — 109 million pounds of food — so no New Yorkers go hungry as a second wave looms. Horseshoe crabs have been helping pharmaceutical companies for decades keep vaccines free of contaminants. Of the 115 beaches the program monitors, 75 have seen horseshoe crabs disappear. They are fascinating creatures that don’t harm humans, but rather do much to help. Their unique blood is used to make sure IV drugs and vaccines are safe. Vaccines like those being developed to fight COVID-19 . “Horseshoe crab blood is harvested to produce limulus amebocyte lysate, LAL. That is a detecting system for bacterial contamination,” said Tanacredi. Pharmaceutical companies harvest the blood and then return the crabs to the water. “We have a 450 million-year-old creature that for the last 45 years has improved the safety of medicines for humans and animals,” said John Dubczak, the executive director of Charles River Laboratories. “Without LAL, you’re not going to be able to produce the billions of inoculations that are going to have to come about to handle this pandemic,” said Tanacredi. Researchers believe horse shoe crabs have less than a decade of survival if more isn’t done to protect them, a species that uniquely protects all of us. Experts Warn: Horseshoe Crabs, Crucial To Helping Create Vaccines, Are Facing Extinction
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) – A gun scare caused chaos Saturday at a subway station in Brooklyn. Police swept the Bedford Avenue station in Williamsburg around 1:20 p.m. and said they found no evidence of shots fired or a gun. A woman on an L train approaching the station reportedly said passengers in her car started running toward her yelling that someone had a gun. Another woman said her husband had to run from one end of the train to the other with their 3-year-old while everyone was screaming. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority acknowledged the “frightening situation” in a tweet and said lost items can be picked up at the station or a Penn Station lost and found. To follow up, NYPD arrived on the scene. There was no gunman found and no reports of any shots fired. We know that may have been a frightening situation but we are committed to the safety of our customers at all times. Gun Scare Prompts Chaotic Scene On L Train In Brooklyn
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Reaction has been heated after New York’s junior U.S. senator led a chorus of Democratic lawmakers calling for the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency to be abolished. Campaigning for reelection and eyeing a possible presidential run in 2020, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand has raised the flag of progressives seeking to use the issue of ICE as a weapon against President Donald Trump. Party sources tell CBS2 they’re worried her shift to the left could make could make it more difficult for moderate Democrats up for reelection this year. Gillibrand says she doesn’t see it that way. “I think there’s a shared moral value that we should not be literally separating children from parents at the border,” she said on Wednesday. As it turns out, that’s the job of Customs and Border Patrol agents. Others have also been quick to point out ICE has been a potent force of good on Long Island, instrumental in arresting members of the vicious transnational street gang MS-13. “It’s irresponsible to say ICE should be abolished,” New York Congressman Peter King (R-2nd) said. “That’s just caving in to political pressure, it result in the loss of human life.” King says in his district alone MS-13 is responsible for the deaths of 25 people in an 18-month span. Gillibrand’s Republican opponent, Chele Farley, calls the incumbent the “ICE Queen,” and it’s not meant as a compliment. “She was the first senator to come out and say to abolish ICE right after Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez,” Farley said. “I think that is a dangerous precedent. We cannot let the safety of our citizens be at risk.” Gillibrand agreed going after MS-13 is important, she just thinks either Homeland Security or Border Patrol should do it. “ICE was set up with a purpose, and that purpose is still needed,” security expert Manny Gomez said. “There are still members of MS-13… that ICE investigates, detains, and ultimately deports.” The senator insists her focus is running for reelection for senate, not for president. When asked if she would serve a full six-year term, she said that was her intention — giving herself at least a little wiggle room to change her mind.

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand Under Fire For Calls To Abolish ICE
WASHINGTON, DC (CBSNewYork) – Flying cars were once just science fiction fantasy, but now several companies are developing vehicles that can glide through the skies. On Capitol Hill lawmakers held a hearing on the technology and found out just how close it is. “Today we’re employing 150 employees across three locations in the U.S.,” said Anna Mracek Dietrich, co-founder of Terrfugia. Dietrich expects her company’s flying car, called the Transition, to be on the market next year. “I think this is a very exciting opportunity for technology to really benefit society,” she said. “I know there’s been a lot of hype around flying cars for generations really but I think we are very close.” The street legal car would take off from an airport, but experts see a day when the vehicles hit the skies from anywhere. Uber plans to create an airborne ride hailing service with machines that can fly themselves at speeds up to 200 miles per hour. “We are targeting 2020 as the date for the start of prototype testing in our two partner cities in the U.S, Dallas-Fort Worth and Los Angeles,” said Dr. Eric Allison, head of aviation programs for Uber. Members of congress says there are major challenges to address before flying cars can get off the ground in large numbers. NASA is studying what regulations need to be adopted so the average driver can start flying. “Assuring the safety of these vehicles for operation in densely populated urban areas will be a major challenge,” said Dr. Jaiwon Shin of the NASA Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate. The Terrafugia transition operates similar to a plane and owners would need a sport pilot license operate it. But the company hopes to eventually have autonomous vehicles that can pull out of the garage and take off vertically. It could change the way we commute and bring an end to the traffic jam.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The California company that sells Crystal Geyser bottled water has been charged with illegally disposing of arsenic-tainted wastewater, federal prosecutors said Thursday. The charges don’t allege that CG Roxane LLC sold tainted water, but that it illegally shipped and disposed of the toxic waste filtered from well water. A 16-count indictment in Los Angeles federal court alleged that Crystal Geyser and two other companies failed to properly disclose the toxic material they shipped in May 2015 and disposed of at a facility not permitted to treat hazardous waste. “Our nation’s environmental laws are specifically designed to ensure that hazardous wastes are properly handled from beginning to end,” U.S. Attorney Nick Hanna said. “The alleged behavior of the three companies charged in this indictment undermines that important objective and jeopardizes the safety of our community.” Naturally occurring arsenic was filtered out of water pumped from wells and later discharged in a pond near the company’s Olancha facility in the Owens Valley, 160 miles north of Los Angeles. The company stopped dumping the tainted water in the pond after the California Department of Toxic Substances Control found it contained hazardous waste in 2014, the prosecutors said. In May of 2015, the company hired two firms in the Los Angeles area to drain and dispose of the water in the pond. The three companies violated federal law by not disclosing in shipping documents that they were transporting hazardous waste that contained arsenic, the indictment said. Federal law requires that toxic and other hazardous waste be documented from “cradle to grave.” The material was taken to a facility in Fontana, about 45 miles east of Los Angeles, that wasn’t approved to handle hazardous waste, prosecutors said. Even the most seasoned CHP officer would have to admit this was a first. The video posted on Instagram showed the man baring it all as he rode his bike at about 9:30 a.m. Wednesday morning. The CHP got multiple calls about the “birthday suit biker” riding on the freeway between Story Road and Alum Rock. The man was seen riding northbound, southbound and even pedaling down the freeway against traffic. Police and CHP officers were not able to find him. Authorities reportedly said they were more concerned about the safety hazard posed by the man riding the bike on the freeway than they were about his lack of clothes.
