Stretch Of Highway 45 Renamed In Honor Of Sandra Wilson

SPRING VALLEY, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) – A stretch of Route 45 in Rockland County has been named for a library security guard who was murdered on the job nine months ago. By state mandate, the sign honoring Sandra Wilson is a drab brown and white, hues that cannot represent the colorful joy and light she brought into so many lives. “She loved everything that was around her, and she always showed love to everyone,” said her brother Ronnie Wilson. Police say a homeless man attacked her when she asked him to turn down music playing on his phone . Ronnie Wilson says every time he drives past the sign honoring his sister, “It’s gonna bring back what happened. But at the same time, it’s gonna bring back joy, to know that my sister was a beloved figure of this community, and they thought enough her to rename a street after her, which is amazing.” Wilson was part of a large, loving family who died just after the birth of her first grandchild. Her youngest daughter is about to graduate high school and head to college. Summer Brings Wave Of ‘Crust Punk’ Homeless Nomads To East Village

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – A homeless population living on the street by choice is back in the city again, and some East Village residents aren’t thrilled about these visitors. Packs of so-called “crust punks” or “crusties” taking over the streets, panhandling, drinking and getting rowdy have become a familiar sight in the summer, reports CBS2’s Reena Roy. “It’s getting worse now than it was before,” said Tania Martinez who lives in the East Village. “Me paying a lot of money being here, I shouldn’t see things like this.” The homeless nomads – known to hop freight trains – pop in and out of cities across the country like Seattle and San Francisco, often ending up in and around Tompkins Square Park when it gets warm out. The pilgrimage dates back to the late 1970s when many began migrating for the neighborhood’s punk rock music scene. Like most subcultures, rejecting the status quo was a conscious choice by its members. “It’s absolutely a choice,” said Dallas, one of the movement’s adherents. “We just hate our government system, the way it affects us as a whole.” Dallas admits life on the streets can often get out of hand. “Some of us, we drink and fight and do drugs and people don’t like that on the streets,” he said, admitting their presence can be a nuisance. NYPD sources say there are more transient people this summer because of the city’s increasing opioid epidemic. The narcotics division has been patrolling the park to help, with police doubling arrests this year – many of them drug related. Police sources say because of the stepped up enforcement, many “crust punks” have started sleeping inside abandoned buildings in the outer boroughs instead. Councilman Stephen Levin says homeless outreach teams are also out in force, but can only do so much. “People have a right to stay on street if they want to, if they choose to,” said Levin. “It’s our job as the city to provide an adequate alternative to that so people feel safe.” So for now, the “crusties” are here to stay… until their next stop.

Demanding Answers: Torn & Tattered Seats Not Sitting Well With LIRR Riders

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Commuters are fed on with the horrible conditions on the Long Island Rail Road, particularly the broken and torn up seats. Chair after chair in car after car, it’s really no secret they’re far from the best seats in the house. Unfortunately, LIRR riders have no choice but to sit on the tattered and taped up seats day after day, year after year. “When you’re paying like a monthly standard of let’s say 260 dollars a month, you’re sitting on a chair that’s broken or out of service,” Great Neck resident Ariel Basalely said. So what’s the agency doing about it? CBS2’s Reena Roy rode a train with LIRR President Phillip Eng to ask him just that. “It’s one of the things we’ve been talking to customers a lot about in terms of commutes,” Eng said. “As we find torn seats they’re being replaced.” The seats are taken to a repair facility in Hillside, Queens to get fixed. At any given time a hundred cars out of the 11,000 total are in maintenance as part of the annual $400,000 seat replacement program. “It’s a continuous 24/7 operation when they come into maintenance they’re being repaired,” Eng said. “We have over a thousand cars, that’s obviously thousands and thousands of seats. We can’t take a car out of service for one torn seat.” Each car has around 40 to 50 seats, on average. Changing cushions on each seat costs about $50, and one car can take an entire day. Eng adds repairs are tough to keep up with because as some seats are fixed, others are damaged, often by the wear and tear of its 300,000 daily riders.

Police: Homeless Man Attacks 3 Women At Columbus Circle Station

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Three women were randomly attacked while waiting for their subway at the Columbus Circle station Monday morning. According to the NYPD, a 55-year-old homeless man approached the three commuters just after 10 a.m. on the Brooklyn-bound B train platform. Each of the women was struck in the face without warning. A train conductor reportedly called for police after seeing the attack, leading to a swarm of officers making their way to the Columbus Circle platform. Police took the alleged attacker into custody and then brought him to Bellevue Hospital for a psych evaluation. The victims – ages 27, 52, 63 – were all taken to a local hospital for treatment. Their injuries were said to be minor. Commuters told CBS2’s Reena Roy that they’re frightened by the seemingly daily incidents occurring at the station. The homeless attacker reportedly has 65 prior arrests including one for public urination at a Brooklyn subway station.

Police Investigate Attempted Rape Of Woman Jogging Inside Bronx Park

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Police are searching for a man they say tried to rape a woman while she was jogging inside a Bronx park. It happened around 7:50 a.m. Monday at Bronx River Forest park near 204th Street and Webster Avenue. Police said the suspect followed the 35-year-old victim, came up behind her and placed his hand over her mouth and arm across her chest, trying to pull her backwards. She fought him off, yelled for help and kept running farther into the park, police said. Police say this man tried to rape a 35 y/o female jogger yesterday in #Bronx River Forest Park just before 8 am. She fought him off, he's still on the loose. So I come early and I don’t stay late.” “This is always my greatest fear. I always walk with that in the back of my mind,” another woman added. “It is scary. I don’t want to know that I can’t come out and exercise.” “This is kind of a family park. People come here to run with their dogs, with their kids. So it’s very unfortunate that happened,” Bronx resident Marc Duplessy said. The suspect is described as a Hispanic man, 17 to 25 years old with a slim build. He was last seen wearing a white hooded sweatshirt with a black shirt across his chest, black shorts and white sneakers. The victim was treated for minor injuries. The NYPD insists crime is down overall , but rapes are up 34 percent: 912 from the first six months of 2018 compared to 680 in 2017. “Rape we always known has been an often under-reported crime. Statistically, nationally they say it’s one of the most under-reported crimes there are,” NYPD Chief of Department Terence Monahan said during Tuesday’s briefing on crime statistics in the city. “That’s the one crime that we look at going up that you’ve got to weigh – it’s actually a good thing, because more people are coming forward, especially when we see it in domestic violence cases, because those are the ones that never come forward and now we’re seeing a huge uptick in people coming forward.” Police are offering a $2,500 reward for information leading to an arrest. Small Business Owners Say Thumbs Down For DOT’s ‘Clear Curb’ Pilot Program

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — A city pilot program to make life easier for New Yorkers has instead had some people suffering instead. The owners of several small businesses say they’re struggling to make ends’ meet because the city wants to clear the curb. Some have called it a crisis. “Since they came into effect we lost a quarter of business,” said Harry Kucevic, owner of Prospect Heights Pizzeria. “This is the worst period for us.” Others say it’s affected business by as much as 50 percent. Many mom and pop shops have been open for years but fear they won’t last after the Department of Transportation cut off parking and deliveries during rush hour in three busy areas across the city. The “Clear Curbs” pilot program, meant to relieve traffic, implemented no standing rules from 7 to 10 am and 4 to 7 pm in Brooklyn on part of Flatbush Avenue, along Roosevelt Avenue in Queens, and a zone between 45th and 50th Streets in Midtown Manhattan. The program is scheduled to end in September, but in the meantime business owners and people in the area wonder how much the program has actually helped ease congestion. CBS2 asked DOT Commissioner Polly Trottenberg about it. “We’ve looked at taxi speed and bus speed data and we can clearly see we’ve reduced congestion in those corridors,” said Trottenberg. The DOT wouldn’t provide data on Trottenberg’s claims, and city leaders have not said if they’ll continue the program after the pilot period ends.
