WASHINGTON (AP) — Cher, composer Phillip Glass, country music star Reba McEntire and jazz legend Wayne Shorter will be honored for lifetime achievements in the arts at this year’s Kennedy Center Honors. The national arts center also announced Wednesday a special award for the genre-bending musical “Hamilton,” as part of the gala set for Dec. 2. Before last year’s program, several honorees threatened a boycott if President Donald Trump attended. He and first lady Melania Trump decided to skip the event “to allow the honorees to celebrate without any political distraction,” as the White House put it. The White House said it’s too early to know whether Trump will participate in this year’s ceremony. Trump may attend the Group of 20 summit in Argentina, which ends Dec. 1. Glass said he hopes Trump does show up as a conciliatory gesture to the arts community. “If he were to come, it would represent a real broadening of his perspective,” Glass said. “American arts really is our biggest contribution to the world, far more than our politics.” Last year, the Kennedy Center’s president, Deborah F. Rutter, publicly thanked Trump for allowing the night to focus solely on the arts and the honorees. But she also said she hoped to see the president attend in the future. “I always hope that the person in that office makes a point of showing as much support for American arts and culture as his predecessors did and as his successors will,” Rutter said in an interview. The “Hamilton” honor marks a first-time honor for a specific piece of art, and a first for a contemporary work. The award will go to the four main creators of the musical: writer and actor Lin-Manuel Miranda, director Thomas Kail, choreographer Andy Blankenbuehler and music director Alex Lacamoire. The musical is playing at the Kennedy Center through mid-September. “This work has had such a huge impact in such a short time. It not only changed the way that people think about art, it changed the way they think about history and the storytelling of history,” said Rutter, who didn’t think awards like this would become regular events. “We felt it was important to honor it in real time and not 30 years in the future.” The four men said in a statement that the honor was “humbling beyond our wildest expectations for our show.” One of the special aspects of the Kennedy Center program is that each recipient is given a personalized introduction and performance by participants kept secret from the honoree. McEntire has served as one of those surprises for four past honorees: Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn, Lily Tomlin and Carol Burnett. “When the curtain went up, I could see the surprise in their eyes,” she said. “I can’t wait to see who they come up with for me.” (@Copyright 2018. ASHLAND, Ore. (CBS Local) – An Oregon woman’s encounter with a napping mountain lion in her home has become a social media sensation. Her explanation of how she got the beast out of the house is even more head-scratching. “This is wild,” Lauren Taylor posted on Facebook on July 8. The Ashland resident was able to photograph the full grown animal after it wandered into her home and decided to snuggle in for a nap behind Taylor’s couch. Taylor’s post, which has been shared over 24,000 times, credits her use of telepathy on the beast as the reason it left her house. Taylor claims she “sent telepathic pictures of the routes out of the house” while blinking at the cougar once it woke up and saw the Ashland woman. “Cats are extremely psychic and perceptive of energy and this lion could have been dangerous in an energy field of fear or anger,” Taylor explained. “A housemate had shouted and slammed a door upon seeing her and the lion was frightened, agitated, and determined to exit through a closed window. Once the energy shifted, she calmed down.” Telepathic powers weren’t the only trick Taylor used to lure the sleepy cougar away from her couch. In a video, which has been viewed over 700,000 times , Taylor kept beating on a drum from her staircase until the furry house guest found its way out. “We called in native ancestors’ support and started drumming,” Taylor wrote. “She roused and knew just what to do…. walking out through the open doors, through the yard, across the creek, and through the empty field behind us exactly as we had shown her.” Whether the Oregon woman has supernatural powers or not, she insisted that people not leave food out for wildlife like mountain lions and bears. She adds that her sleepy visitor was attracted to her house because of the water fountain in the backyard.

(CBS Local) – For many recent college graduates, finding a job is the next big step in life. A report on the best jobs in the country says those grads may want to find a career as a software developer or a dentist. According to U.S. News & World Report’s annual list of the 100 best jobs in America, software developers topped the list with a median salary of $100,080 and over 250,000 projected jobs available this year. Dentists, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and orthodontists all finished in the top five of 2018’s list. “Health care jobs are prominent on our list year after year and are predicted to continue growing rapidly within the job market by 2026,” careers reporter Rebecca Koenig said in January . “Health care goes beyond doctors and nursing professions – there is high demand for people to fill positions available in health care technology, at hospitals and elsewhere within the industry.” Tech jobs continue their strong showing on this year’s list with information security analysts (32nd), IT managers (42nd), and computer systems analysts (46th) all making the top 100. The country’s best paying job was found to be for anesthesiologists, who have an annual median salary of $208,000. Statisticians and actuaries were found to be the best jobs for people looking for a career in business.
