Fantasy Football Preview: Top 10 Defenses/Special Teams

Ryan Mayer The final part of our fantasy football preview positional rankings is here. For those of you asking, no, we’re not going to do a top 10 kickers post. Go outside and take a break from the fantasy sports if you’re looking for a kicker breakdown. Now, one big thing to note before getting into the projections for defenses and special teams. This is likely the most unpredictable of the spots on your fantasy roster (outside of kickers). With injuries to key players, what’s expected to be a top defense, can turn into a bottom-tier unit (cough, Houston cough).  So, unless you’re feeling super confident about the Jaguars or Rams, it’s probably best to wait until one of the final rounds. As we have throughout these previews, we’ll be using the CBS Sports’ projections for standard scoring leagues. (Those interested in PPR should go here .) Position | QB | RB | WR | TE | Credit: Logan Bowles/Getty Images 1) Jacksonville Jaguars It’s not surprising to see the Jags on top of the list heading into this season. Last year, this group posted multiple games in which they scored in the 30+ point range in fantasy, due to their penchant for forcing turnovers and racking up sacks. With the unit returning largely intact this season, it’s possible they could repeat. But, again, no team has repeated as the number-one D/ST unit in the last five years. So don’t pull the trigger too early. CBSSports.com Projections- 245 Fantasy Points (15.3 FPPG), 18 INT 51 sacks 5 DTD 2) Tennessee Titans This is a bit of a surprise because the Titans ranked 21st on CBSSports.com last year among these units. But the Titans did beef up the defense with the additions of CB Malcolm Butler, DT Bennie Logan in free agency and draft picks Rashaan Evans (ILB) and Harold Landry (OLB). The projection system is expecting a big jump due to those additions. CBSSports.com Projections- 226 Fantasy Points (14.1 FPPG) 16 INT 40 sacks 5 DTD 3) Minnesota Vikings The Vikings, unlike the Titans, aren’t a surprising name to find near the top of this list. An already-dominant unit (stingiest in the league 15.8 PPG), added Sheldon Richardson to the line and drafted CB Mike Hughes to help an already-tough secondary. With Mike Zimmer leading the way, this unit once again figures to be tough, as long as everybody is healthy. CBSSports.com Projections- 211 Fantasy Points (13.1 FPPG) 15 INT 39 sacks 4 DTD Credit: Patrick McDermott/Getty Images 4) Baltimore Ravens The Ravens were quietly the second-best defense in total points on CBSSports.com’s fantasy leagues last year. The unit wasn’t reminiscent of the dominant groups of the franchise’s past, but it was effective. Adding rookie corner Anthony Averett to give the secondary a bit more depth should only help a unit that seems to be on the rise again. CBSSports.com Projections- 201 Fantasy Points (12.5 FPPG) 19 INT 39 sacks 5 DTD 5) Los Angeles Rams The Rams ranked third among these units in CBSSports.com fantasy leagues last year, and they did plenty to bolster the unit heading into the 2018 season. The team added DT Ndamukong Suh and CB Aqib Talib in free agency, traded for CB Marcus Peters, and drafted LB Micah Kiser. Oh, by the way, they still have all-world pass-rushing force Aaron Donald (as long as his holdout doesn’t run into the season). The chemistry could be combustible, but Wade Phillips has a ton of weapons at his disposal. CBSSports.com Projections- 200 Fantasy Points (12.5 FPPG) 15 INT 52 sacks 4 DTD > > MORE: Fantasy Football Draft Prep 6) Philadelphia Eagles The Eagles defense surged last year based on their defensive line depth and ability to stop the run, while relying on a pair of veteran safeties to clean up messes on the backend. They went out and added DL Michael Bennett to that front four to replace Vinny Curry, added veteran DT Haloti Ngata. And they’ll get a full year out of corner Sidney Jones, who was recovering from an Achilles tear most of last season. CBSSports.com Projections- 198 Fantasy Points (12.4 FPPG) 16 INT 32 sacks 6 DTD Credit: Jeff Gross/Getty Images 7) Los Angeles Chargers The Chargers have continued to build up their defense, as they went heavy in the draft, adding S Derwin James, DB Tony Brown, LB Uchenna Nwosu, and S/LB Kyzir White. With Joey Bosa becoming a must-double-team force on the edge, and James joining an already solid secondary, the Chargers look good heading into the year. CBSSports.com Projections- 198 Fantasy Points (12.4 FPPG) 15 INT 46 sacks 5 DTD 8) Pittsburgh Steelers The Steelers defense is looking to wash the 40-burger that the Jaguars hung on them in the playoffs out of their mouths. They didn’t add much to the front seven, but they did pick up a pair of safeties in the draft in Marcus Allen and Terrell Edmunds. They’re betting on the continued development of some of the young guys on the roster, and the projections seem to believe it’s a good bet. CBSSports.com Projections- 197 Fantasy Points (12.3 FPPG) 16 INT 49 sacks 5 DTD Credit: Harry How/Getty Images 9) Denver Broncos The Broncos aren’t quite the same terrifying unit of a few years ago, but they do have Von Miller still. Oh, and they added the player some saw as the number-one guy in the draft: DE/OLB Bradley Chubb. They also added tackling machine ILB Josey Jewell and traded for safety Su’a Cravens. The combo of Chubb and Miller has QBs on the Broncos schedule praying their offensive lines hold up. CBSSports.com Projections- 190 Fantasy Points (11.9 FPPG) 16 INT 42 sacks 5 DTD 10) Dallas Cowboys This may seem a little confusing, considering they were a middle-of-the-pack group last year and didn’t seem to add much in the offseason. However, they did take fliers on DE Kony Ealy and Datone Jones while drafting LB Leighton Vander Esch. Betting on the continued growth of LB Jaylon Smith, DL Taco Charlton and a young secondary featuring Byron Jones, Chidobie Awuzie and Jourdan Lewis, the ‘Boys could quickly become a top group, if they can find a consistent pass rush. CBSSports.com Projections- 180 Fantasy Points (11.2 FPPG) 12 INT 36 sacks 4 DTD

Fantasy Football Preview: Top 10 Tight Ends

Ryan Mayer Tight ends are often a forgotten about part of the fantasy football formula. Outside of Gronk and Travis Kelce, fantasy owners tend to assume that the rest of the guys are all pretty much the same. While it’s true they won’t garner nearly as many points as WRs or RBs, a consistent TE, who can get you 6-8 points every week, is a huge boost towards winning your league. The top names for this year remain the same as expected, but be sure to take a look outside of those top two guys for some players to keep in mind later in the draft. As always, the projections below are based on CBSSports.com’s projection system for the upcoming season for standard scoring only. If you’re looking for PPR projections, head here . Positions | QB | RB | WR | Credit: ANGELA WEISS/AFP/Getty Images 1) Rob Gronkowski, New England Patriots After some offseason drama over whether he would retire or not, Gronk is back in Foxborough for another year of snatching footballs and bowling over defenders. With a depleted wide receiver corps, Gronk could see even more targets within the offense this year, making for some high-total potential. Based on the projections, he grades out basically as a top-15 WR option and, of course, the top tight end. CBSSports.com Projections- 144 Fantasy Points (9 FPPG) 77 receptions, 1,080 yards 7 TDs 2) Travis Kelce, Kansas City Chiefs Kelce isn’t quite Gronk, but he’s close. He will also likely benefit this season from being the security blanket for Patrick Mahomes, as the first-time starter gets more comfortable at the NFL level. Quite the security blanket to have, as Kelce has put up back-to-back 80+-reception, 1,000+-yard seasons. CBSSports.com Projections- 136 Fantasy Points (8.5 FPPG) 88 receptions, 1,020 yards 7 TDs Credit: Elsa/Getty Images 3) Zach Ertz, Philadelphia Eagles While Ertz won’t see as many targets as the pair of guys above him, he’s become a favorite of QB Carson Wentz and backup Nick Foles. In the past three years, he’s been remarkably consistent, catching between 74-78 passes for 800-850 yards. The biggest spike last year was in the touchdown total, as he posted eight, which is a career high. That number can be considered an outlier however, as prior to last year, he had never posted more than four. CBSSports.com Projections- 109 Fantasy Points (6.8 FPPG) 76 receptions, 812 yards 6 TDs 4) Evan Engram, New York Giants Engram put up strong numbers as a rookie after nearly the entirety of the receiving corps got injured. He was targeted 111 times, with 64 catches, over 700 yards and six touchdowns. You’d like to see that catch rate come up, particularly given the likelihood of fewer targets with OBJ back and Saquon Barkley added to the backfield. Still, the projections have him as a strong option in his sophomore campaign. CBSSports.com Projections- 97 Fantasy Points (6 FPPG) 68 receptions, 739 yards 5 TDs 5) Jimmy Graham, Green Bay Packers After a couple of seasons in a bit of a misfit role in Seattle, Graham now moves to Green Bay to team up with Aaron Rodgers. He is by far the best tight end that Rodgers has had at his disposal in his career. Graham should get some looks from Rodgers and be able to improve upon his numbers in Seattle. CBSSports.com Projections- 96 Fantasy Points (6 FPPG) 67 catches, 604 yards 8 TDs > > MORE: Fantasy Football Draft Prep Credit: Andy Lyons/Getty Images 6) Delanie Walker, Tennessee Titans A favorite of QB Marcus Mariota, Walker is entering his 13th year, so time will begin to catch up to him at some point. But the projections for this year see him having another solid season, and the chemistry that he’s developed with the young franchise QB suggests that is likely. CBSSports.com Projections- 93 Fantasy Points (5.8 FPPG) 68 receptions, 785 yards 4 TDs 7) Kyle Rudolph, Minnesota Vikings Rudolph doesn’t get as much acclaim as the wide receiver duo of Thielen and Diggs, but when given the targets, he’s produced. His best season came in 2016, when he was targeted 132 times, caught 83 of those passes, for 840 yards and seven touchdowns. Last season, the targets dropped dramatically to just 81, but still Rudolph caught eight touchdowns. An effective, big, red-zone target, Rudolph should be new QB Kirk Cousins’ best friend this season. CBSSports.com Projections- 92 Fantasy Points (5.7 FPPG) 64 receptions, 605 yards 7 TDs Credit: Streeter Lecka/Getty Images 8) Greg Olsen, Carolina Panthers Olsen has been the most reliable pass-catcher that Cam Newton has had available to him in his career. Unfortunately, Olsen missed more than half the season last year with injuries, breaking a streak of nine straight seasons of playing in every game. This year, the 33-year-old is likely to see fewer touches simply because the Panthers now have more weapons for Cam to use. But he’ll still get looks due to his chemistry with Cam. CBSSports.com Projections- 89 Fantasy Points (5.6 FPPG) 61 receptions, 731 yards 4 TDs 9) Jordan Reed, Washington Redskins Reed’s athleticism is on par with the top tight ends in this league, but there’s one major red flag: injury history. He has yet to play a full 16-game season in his career. The past two seasons, he’s played just 18 total games, but in those games, he’s brought in 93 catches for 897 yards and eight touchdowns. That would be a top-three type of season if he stayed healthy and did it in one year. Projections for him are slightly lower, but again, buyer beware with the injury history. CBSSports.com Projections- 82 Fantasy Points (5.1 FPPG) 64 receptions, 640 yards 4 TDs 10) Trey Burton, Chicago Bears Burton became famous in February for his role in the “Philly Special,” winning the hearts of Philly fans forever. The Eagles didn’t have the money to re-sign him, and the Bears pounced, bringing him in on a four-year $32 million contract. Burton will be the starter for the first time in his career, and he’s paired with a young QB in Mitch Trubisky. New head coach Matt Nagy was the offensive coordinator in K.C. where Travis Kelce was heavily used, and Burton could see himself in that role. CBSSports.com Projections- 76 Fantasy Points (4.8 FPPG) 57 receptions, 595 yards 4 TDs

Fantasy Football Preview: Top 10 Wide Receivers

Ryan Mayer While running backs are generally the first few players off the board in standard leagues, top-tier wide receivers can be a huge value if you have one of the later first-round picks in a snake draft. This offers you the opportunity to double up on pass-catching machines and can be a big boost to your roster overall. With draft dates being set and draft orders being selected, you probably know where you stand. The guys below could still be there late in the first round or early in the second. As we’ve noted before, the rankings below are based on CBSSports.com’s projection system for standard leagues only. PPR, particularly for receivers, is a whole different ball game, and you can find those CBSSports.com rankings here . Let’s begin. Positions | QB | RB | Credit: Justin K. Aller/Getty Images 1) Antonio Brown, Pittsburgh Steelers Brown is far and away the number-one receiver option in both styles of leagues. Last year, he posted 101 receptions for 1,533 yards and nine touchdowns, totaling 201 standard points, and you can tell the PPR value was high there as well. This season, CBSSports.com expects Brown to top even that ridiculously high number of fantasy points, making him not only the top receiver, but likely a top-five pick in most drafts. CBSSports.com Projection- 203 Fantasy Points (12.7 FPPG) 108 receptions, 1,538 yards and 10 TDs 2) DeAndre Hopkins, Houston Texans As much as we sang the praises of Antonio Brown above, can you guess who actually put up more fantasy points last season? Yep, that would be Hopkins, who did so despite having Deshaun Watson for only seven games and playing the other nine with the motley crew of Tom Savage and T.J. Yates. He posted 205 fantasy points last season, which is why this year’s projection seems surprisingly low. My guess would be that the projection system is expecting Will Fuller, Bruce Ellington and others to siphon away some of Hopkins’ targets. CBSSports.com Projection- 166 Fantasy Points (10.4 FPPG) 88 receptions, 1,246 yards and 9 TDs 3) Julio Jones, Atlanta Falcons Jones and the Falcons are currently at odds over his contract situation, which means he’s missing training camp time. However, I wouldn’t expect that to affect his performance much once the season rolls around. If anything, he could be healthier, having not played in preseason games. Jones ranked fourth among receivers last year in CBSSports.com’s scoring system with 155 total fantasy points, and the projections are higher for this year. CBSSports.com Projection- 162 Fantasy Points (10.1 FPPG) 97 receptions, 1,387 yards and 5 TDs Credit: Harry How/Getty Images 4) Keenan Allen, Los Angeles Charges Finally fully healthy last year, Allen put up monster numbers for L.A. He finished with 102 receptions for 1,393 yards and six touchdowns, while being targeted 159 (!) times. That kind of heavy target load shouldn’t decrease much, as the Mike Williams is still unproven and Travis Benjamin is simply average. The projection system is pegging him to finish with right around the same numbers from last season. CBSSports.com Projection- 161 Fantasy Points (10 FPPG) 104 receptions, 1,353 yards and 6 TDs 5) Davante Adams, Green Bay Packers Adams became the Packers’ number-one option last season, racking up 74 catches on 117 targets for 885 yards and 10 touchdowns. That’s all without Aaron Rodgers for over half the season. This year, with a healthy Rodgers, and Adams being the go-to guy among his weapons, you should expect a solid season from the fifth-year receiver. CBSSports.com Projection- 152 Fantasy Points (9.5 FPPG) 87 receptions, 1,017 yards and 10 TDs > > MORE: Fantasy Football Draft Prep 6) T.Y. Hilton, Indianapolis Colts Hilton’s numbers dropped significantly last season without Andrew Luck, but that’s understandable. With Luck reportedly returning to full health, and Hilton the only truly proven option in the receiving corps, the projection system is calling for a resurgence. CBSSports.com Projection- 149 Fantasy Points (9.3 FPPG) 79 receptions, 1,139 yards and 7 TDs Credit: Stephen Maturen/Getty Images 7) Michael Thomas, New Orleans Saints Thomas posted higher totals in both the receptions (104) and yardage (1,245) department in his sophomore season in 2017, though his TD numbers dropped a bit with Alvin Kamara siphoning away red-zone opportunities. Still, Thomas is a top option at the wide receiver spot, and the projections have him falling almost in line with last year’s numbers. CBSSports.com Projection- 148 Fantasy Points (9.2 FPPG) 102 receptions 1,199 yards and 6 TDs 8) Odell Beckham Jr., New York Giants OBJ’s injury derailed his season in 2017, and caused fantasy owners frustration in the process. When healthy, he’s a dominant and explosive option capable of putting up a big day any given week. With rookie running back Saquon Barkley in the fold, defenses have someone else to worry about and won’t be able to focus as much attention on Beckham, leading to potentially more explosive plays. In the final year of his rookie deal, you know he’ll want to show out to prove he deserves a big-money extension. CBSSports.com Projections- 148 Fantasy Points (9.2 FPPG) 103 receptions, 1,167 yards and 7 TDs 9) A.J. Green, Cincinnati Bengals Green had a typically solid season in 2017, despite a bad year overall for the Bengals. He hauled in 75 receptions for 1,078 yards and eight touchdowns, in spite of brutal play from the rest of the offense and a largely ineffective Andy Dalton. Cincy brought in some offensive-line help this offseason which should theoretically give Dalton more time and allow him to be more accurate when targeting Green. Either way, Green has proven capable of putting up big numbers. CBSSports.com Projections- 146 Fantasy Points (9.1 FPPG) 95 receptions for 1,229 yards and 6 TDs Credit: Jamie Squire/Getty Images 10) Stefon Diggs, Minnesota Vikings Diggs’ most memorable moment last season was the Minnesota Miracle to beat the New Orleans Saints and allow the Vikings to advance to the NFC Championship Game. That overshadowed a regular season in which he put up a career-high in touchdowns (8) despite 20 fewer receptions and 17 fewer targets. He has a new QB in Kirk Cousins to develop chemistry with, but the projections are high on Diggs, having him round out the top 10. CBSSports.com Projections- 144 Fantasy Points, (9 FPPG) 86 receptions, 1,057 yards and 8 TDs

Fantasy Football Preview: Top 10 Running Backs

Ryan Mayer Fantasy football season is nearly upon us. So, if you’re like me, and were focused on other things over the last few months, you probably need a quick refresher before your league holds its draft. That’s what we’re here for, to take you through the projections of the top 10 rankings for each position while also pointing you to where you can find overall projections for all off the players heading into this season. We already did quarterbacks , now it’s time to focus on the real backbone of any fantasy team: running backs. For as devalued as running backs have become in today’s NFL, at least from a contract perspective, a top-tier guy or breakout star could make your fantasy season. CBSSports.com Projections- 291 Fantasy Points (18.2 FPPG) 1,392 rushing yards 12 TDs & 694 receiving yards with 5 TDs 2) Le’Veon Bell, Pittsburgh Steelers Bell has consistently been one of the most productive backs for fantasy owners over the past several years. Heading into this season, Bell will be even more motivated to produce, as his contract dispute with the Steelers has ended with him playing on the franchise tag once more. To prove he’s worth a big contract, Bell will likely want to put up big numbers and CBSSports.com is projecting him to finish with 20 more fantasy points than he did last season. CBSSports.com Projections- 260 Fantasy Points (16.25 FPPG) 1,350 rushing yards with 10 TDs & 728 receiving yards with 2 TDs Credit: Adam Bettcher/Getty Images 3) Alvin Kamara, New Orleans Saints A breakout star in 2017, Kamara proved to be effective both in the running game and in the passing game, exactly the kind of dual-threat back that proves to be the most useful in fantasy football and actual football these days. He won’t get as many carries as the two guys above him, since he’s splitting the backfield with Mark Ingram. But Kamara still promises to be an effective fantasy option regardless. CBSSports.com Projections- 231 Fantasy Points (14.4 FPPG) 933 rushing yards with 9 TDs & 732 receiving yards with 5 TDs 4) Ezekiel Elliott, Dallas Cowboys Elliott missed time last year due to the NFL’s suspension for some of his off-field antics, and he couldn’t replicate his dominant rookie campaign because of it. With no suspension looming over him this time around, Elliott should once again be the focal point of the offense. When you consider the unsettled nature of the passing game due to a questionable receiving corps, Elliott should see even more of the ball in 2018. CBSSports.com Projections- 213 Fantasy Points (13.3 FPPG) 1,348 rushing yards with 8 TDs & 388 receiving yards with 2 TDs 5) Kareem Hunt, Kansas City Chiefs Hunt, like Kamara, was a middle-round pick who became a star once the season began. He tailed off down the stretch, so did the Chiefs really, but this year he’s likely to be a bit more of a security blanket, as K.C. will trot out first-time starter Patrick Mahomes. After showing dual-threat capability last year, Hunt will look to build on his debut year. CBSSports.com Projections- 200 Fantasy Points (12.5 FPPG) 1,118 rushing yards with 8 TDs & 402 receiving yards with 3 TDs 6) David Johnson, Arizona Cardinals Johnson was the number one overall pick in many leagues last year after proving to be a workhorse running and catching the football in 2016. Then he dislocated his wrist in the opener, ending his season before it got started, much to the frustration of fantasy owners. Because of that, the projection systems aren’t quite as high on him this season. But there’s a pretty good chance that with Sam Bradford at QB and a depleted receiving corps outside of Larry Fitzgerald, Johnson will be asked to pick up the slack on offense. CBSSports.com Projections- 197 Fantasy Points (12.3 FPPG) 818 rushing yards with 6 TDs & 883 receiving yards with 3 TDs Credit: Tom Pennington/Getty Images 7) Saquon Barkley, New York Giants The rookie running back out of Penn State may be the most hyped RB we’ve seen since Adrian Peterson coming out of Oklahoma. However, Barkley is hyped for a different reason. Barkley is in the same mold as most of the guys on this list, outside of Zeke Elliott. He can catch out of the backfield and also provides a dominant presence in the ground game. People are expecting big things from Barkley, CBSSports.com’s projection system included. CBSSports.com Projections- 192 Fantasy Points (12 FPPG) 1,123 rushing yards with 8 TDs & 425 receiving yards with 2 TDs 8) Melvin Gordon, Los Angeles Chargers Did you know Gordon ended last season as the running back with the fifth-most fantasy points? I certainly didn’t. He was productive for the Chargers, but purely by playing for the Chargers, the ‘other’ team in L.A., he didn’t get much notoriety. But he’s a solid fantasy option, and CBSSports.com expects more of the same this season. CBSSports.com Projections- 188 Fantasy Points (11.7 FPPG) 1,030 rushing yards with 8 TDs & 406 receiving yards with 3 TDs Credit: Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images 9) Leonard Fournette, Jacksonville Jaguars The Jaguars battering ram of a running back had a solid rookie season, as Jacksonville tried to beat their opponents into the ground with the running game and a ferocious defense. This year is likely to be more of the same, as Blake Bortles is still the QB for the Jags, and he lost receivers Allen Hurns and Allen Robinson. While Bortles finds chemistry with the new guys, Fournette will chug along on the ground. CBSSports.com Projections- 183 Fantasy Points (11.4 FPPG) 1,148 rushing yards with 9 TDs & 290 receiving yards with 1 TD 10) Jerick McKinnon, San Francisco 49ers This is the biggest surprise of the projection system to me. McKinnon has never started more than seven games in his career, so it’s unclear what he’ll do with a full-time role. But, based on his part-time stats, it’s understandable to see this kind of projection with a full 16-game load. CBS Sports Projection- 176 Fantasy Points (11 FPPG) 885 rushing yards with 7 TDs & 552 receiving yards with 2 TDs

Ryan Mayer Fantasy football season is nearly upon us. So, if you’re like me, and were focused on other things over the last few months, you probably need a quick refresher before your league holds its draft. That’s what we’re here for, to take you through the projections of the top 10 rankings for each position while also pointing you to where you can find overall projections for all off the players heading into this season. We already did quarterbacks , now it’s time to focus on the real backbone of any fantasy team: running backs. For as devalued as running backs have become in today’s NFL, at least from a contract perspective, a top-tier guy or breakout star could make your fantasy season.
