GRIFFITH PARK (CBSLA) — The LAPD bomb squad descended on the Greek Theatre in Griffith Park on Sunday. As CBSLA’s Cristy Fajardo reports, the LAPD said the bomb threat turned out to be a false alarm. Sky9 was over the Greek Theatre as bomb-sniffing dogs went through the aisles. The crowd had come to see YouTube star Yousef Erakat whose YouTube channel FouseyTube has more than a million subscribers. Police say about 6:15 p.m. they got a call from a person claiming to have planted an explosive device at the theater. The LAPD decided to clear out the venue just in case and brought in the bomb squad. The event was free and tickets had sold out but at that hour police say only about 1,500 people were at the Greek and Erakat had yet to take the stage. After it was clear the event was not going on he got on top of his car down the road and gave an impromptu performance. Some of his fans had driven hours to see him on short notice. The concert was only announced days ago and some fans are wondering if the threat was the handiwork of a jealous social media rival. “Everybody was enjoying themselves,” said a fan. “It was just getting better and then out of nowhere they make an announcement. They tell everybody ‘oh we need to evacuate. There’s a light problem.’ ” “It happens to a lot of people. A lot of YouTubers. There’s not much you can really do about it,” said another fan. On Saturday the Griffith Observatory also had a false alarm . Police were called out there to a call of a suspicious package. The Observatory was also evacuated and they also found nothing. Police say they don’t know if the two incidents are connected. They are now investigating.

ALPINE, N.J. (CBSNewYork) — The Palisades Interstate Parkway police chief has been suspended over a controversial incentives program. Starting Monday, Chief Michael Coppola will be off the job for 90 days. A review by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office found Coppola would reward officers who wrote the most tickets and had the most arrests. Winners received better squad cars, parking spaces and meal allowances. Coppola’s private company also provided IT services for the police department. He did not charge for the service, but officials called it a potential conflict of interest. The review also showed officers misrepresented themselves as a charity instead of a labor group when soliciting donations.

Police Looking For Man After Alleged Attack On Wife With Chainsaw
WASHINGTON (CBSNewYork/AP) — Mayor Bill de Blasio and his security detail violated both Mexican and U.S. immigration laws by crossing the border on foot during a visit near El Paso, Texas, U.S. Customs and Border Protection alleges in a letter obtained by The Associated Press. The mayor’s office flatly denied the allegation. De Blasio, a fierce critic of the Trump administration’s immigration policies , went to the Texas border with about 20 other mayors from around the country on June 21, the day after President Donald Trump signed an order stopping family separations at the border. “Every country needs reasonable law enforcement on their borders. ICE is not reasonable law enforcement. ICE is broken, it’s divisive and it should be abolished,” the mayor tweeted last month . More than 2,300 families were separated as a result of the administration’s zero-tolerance policy, which criminally prosecutes anyone caught crossing illegally. The mayors said Trump had failed to address a humanitarian crisis of his own making. Mayor Bill de Blasio stops at a gate after being told he could not cross through the gate to the tent facility setup at the Tornillo-Guadalupe Port of Entry on June 21, 2018 in Fabens, Texas. (Photo by Joe Raedle/Getty Images) De Blasio went to a holding facility for immigrant children but was denied entry. He then went to Mexico and crossed into the U.S. to get a view of the facility. The New York Police Department runs de Blasio’s security detail. According to the letter, a uniformed Border Patrol agent noticed a group on the Rio Grande River flood plain south of the Tornillo, Texas, Port of Entry, taking photos of the holding facility. The agent asked if anyone from Border Patrol or public affairs was there to authorize their presence. A New York Police Department inspector said no, according to the letter, and when the agent asked the group how they arrived, they pointed to Mexico. The agent told them they’d crossed the border illegally and asked them to remain there while he got a supervisor and took them to an official crossing for an inspection per federal law, according to the letter. But the group disregarded the order and drove back to Mexico, according to the letter. However, de Blasio said Wednesday the border agents let him cross and called the charges “absolutely ridiculous.” “We were told where the border line was, and we respected it. We came back the exact same way, both times showed passports,” he said. “At no point did we disregard any instructions from federal authorities, period.” De Blasio spokesman Eric Phillips said the group did nothing illegal and had approval to be there. “The mayor crossed the border with the direct approval and under the supervision of the border patrol supervisor at this port of entry,” Phillips said in an email Tuesday night to the AP. “Any suggestion otherwise is a flat-out lie and an obvious attempt by someone to attack the Mayor because of his advocacy for families being ripped apart at the border by the Trump Administration.” Phillips had posted tweets of the mayor’s visit on June 21. Gomez also raised another issue about the mayor putting his security detail in a tough spot. “It’s not to the NYPD to determine which is the border. The NYPD’s jurisdiction is obviously within the confines of the five boroughs of the city of New York,” he said. “It shouldn’t be up to them to discern and educate the mayor of New York as to where the border between the U.S. and Mexico is.” A spokesperson for the Border Protection had no comment. The letter was sent June 25 by Aaron Hull, the chief patrol agent for the Border Patrol’s El Paso Sector to New York Police Department Commissioner James O’Neill . The mayor blamed the letter on politics and his disagreements with the Trump administration. An NYPD spokesperson told Kramer that O’Neill reviewed the letter and will not take action against any of the NYPD officers involved.

HAPPAUGE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) — Police are crediting the bravery and heroism of an officer for helping to stop a crane operator after they say he hit several cars on the Long Island Expressway. Brian Sinclair, 47, was walked out of the Sixth Precinct in Selden Wednesday. He’s facing charges of driving while intoxicated and leaving the scene of an accident. Police said Sinclair was driving a crane eastbound on the LIE around 6:20 p.m. Tuesday when he hit four vehicles just west of exit 57 in Ronkonkoma and then kept going. He was then spotted driving erratically near exit 60 by Highway Patrol Officer Joseph Goss, according to police. When the crane slowed down, police said Goss jumped onto the vehicle and forced Sinclair to stop near exit 63. “The crane did not come to a complete stop,”said Suffolk County Police Chief of Department Stuart Cameron. “Officer Goss was able to pull in behind the crane, exit his vehicle, run up to it — and again the crane was moving at slow speed — get into the crane and force the operator to stop.” Cameron said Goss “risked his life” to help stop the crane. “So not only was there tremendous coordination and skill utilized by the Highway Patrol Bureau, there was tremendous bravery,” he said. Goss said he was “just doing my job” adding that it “seemed like the right thing to do at the time.” “It was just my job,” he added. “Doing my job.” Cameron and Goss also credited other officers for helping in the effort. “I was grateful for the other officers being there that day just because of the size of the vehicle,” Goss said. “I was really concerned that if this guy continued on eastbound, he would have killed somebody.” Police said none of the people in the four vehicles that were hit were seriously hurt, though three people were treated in area hospitals for minor injuries. Goss also suffered minor injuries. This wasn’t the officer’s first moment of heroism, CBS2’s Jessica Moore reported. In December 2016, he rescued a woman driving drunk with a baby in her car on the LIE. He jumped into the passenger seat and convinced the driver to pull over. Police said Sinclair was driving a vehicle that belongs to Bay Crane Services. CBS2 called the company, but they haven’t responded to a request for information. Sinclair was arraigned Wednesday in Central Islip. Bail was set at $5,000 cash or $15,000 bond. He is due back in court on July 20.

MEXICO CITY (CBS News) – Police in Mexico are investigating the murder of an American tourist hit by a stray bullet in Mexico City. FILE — An undated photo of Tatiana Mirutenko. (CNN) Tatiana Mirutenko of San Francisco was leaving a restaurant with her husband and two friends Saturday morning when she was shot. Police say two men on a motorcycle were aiming for a bar bouncer who was at the same restaurant. The bouncer was hit, but survived. Mirutenko, 27, was in Mexico celebrating her first wedding anniversary and had just told her family how safe she felt. The restaurant where Mirutenko was shot was located in an upscale neighborhood. “We’ve traveled to Mexico all of our lives,” Mirutenko’s father, Wasyl, said. “Tania has probably been there at least 30 times.” According to the latest figures from the Mexican government, 2017 was the nation’s deadliest year on record, with more than 25,000 murders. Earlier this year, the U.S. State Department issued a travel ban to five Mexican states, the same warning issued to war-torn countries like Syria, Afghanistan and Somalia. Popular tourist destinations Ixtapa and Acapulco are in those “do not travel” zones. The government also warns tourists to “exercise increased caution” when visiting Cancun, Cozumel, Playa del Carmen and Mexico City. Mirutenko’s funeral will be held Saturday in Chicago, where she grew up. Police in Mexico say they are reviewing surveillance video as they search for the gunmen. © 2018 CBS Interactive Inc.
