NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Cheers erupted across New York City moments after Joe Biden was projected to win the presidential election. CBS News and other media outlets made the projection around 11:30 a.m. Saturday, saying he was projected to win Pennsylvania, giving him enough electoral college votes to win the presidency. Lamar Odom Returning To Basketball, To Play In China

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA/AP) – Former NBA star Lamar Odom is returning to the hardwood. In an Instagram post Thursday, the 38-year-old wrote that he will be playing professional basketball in China. (Getty Images) “My heart literally warms up now I can finally share with you all that I’m returning to play Basketball,” Odom wrote. “I will be playing in China! God is good!” Odom did not elaborate on where he will be playing or what his contract looks like. He last played in the NBA in the 2012-13 season, when he appeared for the Los Angeles Clippers. He signed a contract with the New York Knicks in 2014, but was cut by the team before appearing in a game. Odom had two NBA titles with the L.A. Lakers in 2010 and 2011. He won the NBA’s sixth man award during that second championship run. In his post, Odom thanks former NBA star Stephon Marbury, for “being my inspiration.” After leaving the NBA, Marbury had a long and successful career in the Chinese Basketball Association. Odom has struggled with drug addiction for years. In 2015, he was found unconscious with cocaine in his system in a Nevada brothel. He was unconscious on life support in a Las Vegas hospital before making an incredible recovery. He blamed cocaine for helping end his NBA career. Last year, he told US Weekly that “drugs killed my drive to want to train and be in shape.” He divorced reality TV star Khloe Kardashian in 2016. The two had been married for four years when Kardashian filed for divorce in 2013. She temporarily rescinded the filing after his cocaine overdose, but later re-filed it. Panhandler Caught Using Photo Of Gabriel Fernandez, Boy Tortured To Death, To Raise Money For Fake Funeral Fundraiser

(SOURCE: @sierranchavez/Twitter) LA PUENTE (CBSLA) — The family of a small boy who died at the hands of his parents due to abuse is outraged after images of a panhandler using his image to raise funds for a fake funeral emerged on social media. Several people posted photos of a man in La Puente asking for money for the funeral of Jose Mendoza, who supposedly died of leukemia. In reality, the photo was of Gabriel Fernandez , an 8-year-old Palmdale boy whose gruesome death made headlines five years ago. A witness who goes by “Mike” told CBS2 News he quickly figured out the man’s ruse. “I turned red, I was so — I wanted to scream at him and say something to him, but I didn’t want to get involved,” said Mike, who saw the man on the corner of Amar Road and Hacienda Boulevard Thursday afternoon. “I immediately saw his picture, and I’m like, ‘The guy has the nerve to use the picture that’s all over the Internet.’ So, yeah, it hurt, but then it kind of turned [into] a little bit of anger.” Mike took a photo of the man and shared it on Twitter. Another witness also shared a photo of the man, ending her tweet , “They know what they’re doing is wrong smh”. Mike agrees. “I’m a firm believer in karma, and I hope it comes back to him,” echoed Mike. Gabriel died in May 2013 after he was starved and beaten by his mother Pearl Sinthia Fernandez and her boyfriend Isauro Aguirre. During their trials for murder and torture, prosecutors revealed gruesome details of the boy’s abuse, which included getting handcuffed, being shot by a BB gun and getting pepper-sprayed. Fernandez was sentenced to life in prison, and Aguirre was given the death penalty earlier this year . Gabriel’s cousin told CBS2 she is outraged but has seen this type of scheme before in her neighborhood in the San Fernando Valley. She had the following message for the persons perpetrating the lies: Gabriel suffered a lot during his lifetime. He was buried 5 years ago. Let him rest in peace. Panhandlers are allowed to ask for money as long they don’t accost the public or do it in specific areas like freeway off-ramps.

(CNN) — For the second month in a row, Time magazine has put a provocative photo illustration of President Donald Trump on its cover — this time, morphing him into Russian President Vladimir Putin. In it, Trump’s distinctive blonde hair, wispy eyebrows and pursed lips merge with Putin’s nose and blue eyes. The stunning photo illustration, by visual artist Nancy Burson, “is meant to represent this particular moment in US foreign policy, following the pair’s recent meeting in Helsinki, Finland,” Time said in a statement. Trump has weathered heavy criticism from Democrats and Republicans alike for his performance at the meeting, where he publicly sided with Putin over US intelligence agencies’ assessment that the Russians interfered in the 2016 presidential election. Since coming back home from Finland, the President has changed his messaging and now says he holds Putin personally responsible for the election meddling and believes the assessment of government intelligence agencies. In addition to the still image for the July 30 issue, Burson created a video image as well, which morphs back and forth between the seemingly-ever changing appearances of the two men. In that stark photo illustration, the towering figure of Trump looms over a sobbing child, who is the subject of a now-iconic photograph taken by Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer John Moore. “Welcome to America,” the illustration reads. Use of the photo of the child generated controversy as well, after it was revealed that the 2-year-old Honduran girl had not been separated from her mother at the border. The latest image was created by a photography pioneer Burson, the designer of the latest cover, is a trailblazer in this type of art, starting with her work 30 years ago with scientists at MIT which led to the development of computer-generated compositing technology. She’s best known for developing a photographic face-aging technique that the FBI uses to find missing children, according to the Time statement. Her most famous aged image is the one of kidnapped 6-year-old Etan Patz that was on the front page of the New York Post in 1985. It showed what Patz might have looked like six years after his kidnapping. Destiny’s Child Singer Michelle Williams Says She’s Seeking Mental Health Help

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Destiny’s Child singer Michelle Williams says she’s seeking help for the depression she has struggled with for years. Williams said in an Instagram post Tuesday that she has “sought help from a great team of health care professionals.” She gave no specifics on her treatment. Williams’ post says that for years she has dedicated herself to increasing awareness of mental health and empowering people to seek help. She says she recently decided to listen to the advice she has given, and wants to lead by example in seeking treatment. On Tuesday night, they played host to the Macon Bacon, a similarly delightfully rhyming team name, but the most notable part of the night was the Bananas team attire. No we were not joking. They are wearing kilts the whole game. Ryan Mayer San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Marquise Goodwin signed a three-year $20 million contract extension with the team earlier this offseason after enjoying a breakout season in 2017. Now, he’s used that money to give back to his family, buying a house for his mother Tamina and his sister Deja, who suffers from cerebral palsy. Marquise is 10 months older than his sister, Deja, who has been confined to a wheelchair for most of her life. He told ESPN in 2013 that his sister has provided him with inspiration that has helped him get to where he is today. “If Deja wasn’t my sister, I feel like I would still be motivated but not in the way that I am today,” Goodwin told ESPN in 2013. “Having a disabled sister, that’s a lot more motivation, especially when she tells you growing up that she wishes she can be out there with the kids playing and she wishes she can be out there running around.” According to ESPN, doctors told Goodwin’s mother that Deja wouldn’t live past six months. This fall, she’ll be celebrating her 27th birthday. Goodwin, meanwhile, will look to build upon a season in which he set career highs for receptions (56) and receiving yards (962).
