TEANECK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) — Charges had not been filed as of Monday for the tragic car crash that killed five members of a family from New Jersey. What caused a pickup truck driver to cross a center median in Delaware Friday before slamming into the family’s minivan? The Trinidads of Teaneck were as tight as a family could be. The four beautiful sisters were inseparable in life, and tragically so in death. “As a mother, the first thing you do is hug your kids because you don’t want anything like that to ever happen,” said Teaneck resident Paula Millan. The family was headed home from a vacation in Ocean City, Maryland on Friday when a pickup truck travelling in the wrong direction on Route 1 in Delaware collided with their minivan, killing 61-year-old Audi Trinidad and his daughters — Kaitlyn, 20, Danna, 17, and 13-year-old twins Melissa and Allison. Their mother, Mary Rose, was the only one to survive. The pickup hit Brian Kerns’ car right before the Trinidads’. He suffered only minor injuries. “I had gotten out and looked behind me and it sort of looked like a war zone,” said Kerns. “I heard about what happened to the family and I was sitting there in the emergency room and my heart was just pouring out to them.” Friends and loved ones are rallying to support Mary Rose Ballocanag while she recovers and lives with the unthinkable loss. Her daughter Kaitlyn was studying to be a nurse, the twins thrived in the arts, and friends say Danna was an honor student who selflessly helped others in need. “I would be falling behind and struggling and it was kind of obvious,” Danna’s friend, Armando Desequeira, said. “She’d just go, ‘Hey, this is the answer I’ll explain to you’.” Funeral arrangements were still pending as the family awaited the arrival of relatives coming from the Philippines. Meanwhile, grief counselors were being made available at Teaneck High School through Friday.

TEANECK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) — A father who died along with his four daughters in a Delaware highway crash was a native of the Philippines and U. S. Navy veteran who settled in New Jersey to raise his family. A Mass Sunday morning honored 61-year-old Audie Trinidad of Teaneck and his daughters, 20-year-old Kaitlyn, 17-year-old Danna and 13-year-old twins Melissa and Allison. “They were always so happy, never down,” Teaneck resident Fiona Carter said. The family was returning from a trip to Ocean City, Maryland, Friday on U.S. Route 1 when police said a pickup truck crossed the median for unknown reasons and hit the minivan and another car. The girls’ mother, 53-year-old Mary Rose, was rushed to the hospital with serious injuries and is expected to survive. Her aunt attended the Sunday memorial service. “She needs everybody’s prayers,” said Lydia Agas, who had very little sleep after attending a packed vigil Saturday night. Students at Teaneck High School made shirts memorializing Danna, who was a junior. “She was an amazing young lady, National Honors Society, very active,” said Dean of Students Olivia Betances. “All the siblings were.” Audi’s brother Danny Trinidad flew in from Florida. “In the blink of an eye, lost everything,” he said. “My brother’s a nice family man. He loves his family. They all go out during summer break and he takes his kids.” Members of the congregation recall the family attended mass every Sunday morning, always sitting in the same row. “It’s hard to wrap our head around it but we are going to get through this together,” said Brigid Dwyer Carter. Church representatives were also in Delaware on Sunday speaking with Mary Rose, helping her with the complex task of arranging services that will end with five burials. At the family’s home, flowers were left on the lawn as further proof of how much the community cares. Delaware State police say Audi, who was driving, and his wife, who was in the front passenger seat, were wearing seatbelts. The daughters in the back were not. Investigators have yet to figure out what caused the driver of the pickup trick, identified as 44-year-old Alvin S. Hubbard, to cross the median into oncoming traffic. Mass Honors Teaneck Father, 4 Daughters Killed In Delaware Crash
CLAREMONT (CBSLA) — An emotional vigil was held Thursday evening in honor of Mark Manlapaz, the Cal Poly Pomona officer who was fatally stabbed last week. CBS2’s Tina Patel said friends and family were not only struggling with their grief, they’re still trying to make sense of what happened to the public safety specialist last Friday. “I’m still shocked. but we live in a cruel world,” says friend Ray Santos. Manlapaz, 37, was stabbed while sitting in his truck just off campus. The suspect, who’s been identified only as a custodian at the university, was later killed by officers. Cal Poly Police are trying to be patient while sheriff’s investigators figure out a possible motive. “I won’t be able to say they can actually give us answers, because nobody was there. But maybe they can give us an idea to what truly occurred on that horrific day,” says Cal Poly Pomona Police Chief Dario Robinson. But at a vigil in Claremont, where Manlapaz also worked as a senior park ranger, friends didn’t want to focus on how he died, instead they shared memories of how he lived. “Mark was just one of the nicest guys I’ve known. He’d come in, you’d never hear a complaint come from his mouth. Just always happy, smiling,” says fellow park ranger Juan Aguilar. Manlapaz was recalled as a hard worker who not only took care of his family here in California but in the Philippines as well — he did so without anyone knowing. That’s another reason his friends say he was taken too soon. They have no doubt that Manlapaz is in a better place now. “I know God will take care of him, and angels will be always be with Mark,” says Santos. Manlapaz lived in Victorville. His family says a funeral service will be held at the High Desert Church later this month.
