7 Hurt, Including 2 Children, After Car Slams Into Outdoor Dining Structure In Midtown

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Several people are hurt, including two children, after a multi-vehicle crash sent debris flying through the air during the morning commute in Manhattan. The crash happened around 8:30 a.m. at the corner of 2nd Avenue and East 50th Street in Midtown . Police said a white van was driving south on 2nd Ave. when it hit a black Toyota Camry, causing the Camry to spin out and crash into an outdoor dining area nearby. Fortunately, no one was inside the structure. The white van then crashed into a food stand about a block away at 49th Street. Police said seven people were taken to the hospital, including two children, ages 5 and 7, who were hit by debris. (Credit: Blank Slate Restaurant) A restaurant owner whose business is right in front of the scene said one of his employees heard a loud bang and rushed out to help. “He came right out, he called 911. Luckily, no one got hurt. We had people seated in all these little huts. Luckily, just some debris made it over here, nothing more than that,” Zach Israel told CBS2’s Kiran Dhillon. “We heard the sirens all morning. My son said he woke up and heard like a boom, like a bomb, or someone falling from a building and screens,” another person added. All of the victims were taken to area hospitals in stable condition and expected to be OK. Police said the driver of the van is in custody. Gov. Lamont Lifts Most COVID Capacity Limits In Connecticut, But Maintains Mask Mandate

HARTFORD, Conn. (CBSNewYork) — Connecticut is rolling back COVID-19 restrictions in the most significant reopening in the Tri-State Area since the pandemic began. Gov. Ned Lamont announced Thursday that in just two weeks, COVID capacity limits will be lifted for most businesses in the state, but the governor says masks, hand-washing and social distancing are still crucial. Starting March 19, all capacity limits will be lifted for restaurants, retail, gyms, officers, personal services, museums and houses of worship. The mask mandate and spacing requirements will remain in place. “I know what’s happening in Texas and Mississippi. I’ve heard the president. It’s probably the most important thing you can do,” Lamont said. NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — It was another night of post-election protests in New York City. Hundreds of people marched in Manhattan Thursday night. Some clashed with police, resulting in nearly 20 arrests, but authorities believe outside agitators again played a role in turning the demonstrations violent. As CBS2’s John Dias reports, a sanitation crew spent their Friday morning, cleaning up the mess at Union Square park left behind from another night of chaos. Dozens of officers tried controlling crowds of hundreds during a few different protests downtown Thursday night. In total, 19 people were arrested. Tonight, while performing their duties near Bond St & Broadway in Manhattan, an officer was pushed to the ground & had this chain pressed against his throat. Police: Suspect In New York Nurse’s Death Found Holding Another Woman Captive In L.A. Hotel

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Police say they finally caught up with a man wanted in connection with the death of a nurse in Queens, discovering the suspect on the other side of the country with another woman held captive in a Los Angeles hotel room. Danueal Drayton, 27, of New Haven, Conn., was taken into custody Thursday. The hunt began after 29-year-old nurse Samantha Stewart was found dead inside her bedroom at her family home in Springfield Gardens, Queens, on July 17. Police say Stewart suffered trauma to her head and neck. “A lot of sorrow is in my heart,” her aunt, Ruby Dixon, told CBS2’s Tony Aiello after learning about Drayton’s arrest. “My niece was the best you ever could find in a human being.” (credit: NYPD) Police had been searching for the person responsible for Stewart’s murder and also another incident involving the rape of a 23-year-old woman that happened the month before in Gowanus, Brooklyn. Both investigations led them to the same suspect, when the joint New York/New Jersey Police Task Force caught up with Drayton. “There was a separate woman in a hotel room in California that was being held against her will,” said NYPD Chief of Detectives Dermot Shea. “Right after he commit a gruesome murder here and destroy my family, he went to California and just almost did the same thing,” Stewart’s father, Kenneth, said. “Thank God they catch him before he could destroy another family.” When we captured Danuel Drayton in LA for the murder of Queens nurse Samantha Stewart, he had another victim held captive. They say he also may have used other dating sites to meet potential victims. “The common denominator in these two cases – one being a murder, one being a rape – is dating websites,” said Shea. “So this individual is known to us and it is believed by us that this individual uses dating web sites to meet women and then victimize these women.” Police say Drayton was well known to police. He was arrested in June for allegedly choking an ex-girlfriend at Inwood Park in Nassau County. One July 1, his bail was set at $1,000. On July 5, a judge dropped the bail requirement, over the objection of the district attorney, and Drayton walked free. He also has five prior arrests in his home state of Connecticut, including a strangulation arrest in 2011. “I’m devastated by my loss of my daughter, but hearing this news now it really, really shocks me, throws me over the edge,” said Kenneth Stewart. Police believe there may be more victims out there and are asking for anyone affected or who has information to come forward. “Be careful. If you meet up with someone, tell somebody,” Dixon said. “Tell a family member, tell a friend. You don’t know who these monsters are.” Stewart’s funeral is set for Saturday.

New Jersey Governor’s Power Over Budget Projections Challenged

TRENTON, N.J. (CBSNewYork) – In the midst of intense budget negotiations, New Jersey Senate President Steve Sweeney introduced a constitutional amendment that would strip some of the governor’s budget powers. The proposal from would shift responsibility over revenue projections from the governor to a three-member panel consisting of state representatives and outside experts, reports CBS2’s Meg Baker. “This is not one we agree on,” said Gov. Phil Murphy . “In my humble opinion, (it) has to be and will continue to be in my opinion the chief executor of the state part of responsibility. It’s checks and balances realty that’s worked really well.” “Too much volatility in budget process right now,” said Sweeny. “Working with the administration, legislature, independent body, we’ll come up with a number and then we know they’re the numbers, instead of saying it’s something that it’s not and haggling inflate numbers, deflate numbers – more predictable forecasting system.” The current budgeting process has been in place for 71 years, and some question the need to change. “What do you say to people who say this is Dems against Phil Murphy?” said Sweeney. “Not true, governors come and go, this just fixes process.” “One individual should not have sole authority to certify numbers,” he said. Some New Jersey residents say they are looking for greater efficiency. “Anything that will improve conditions something should be tried,” said Susan Pfreffer of Edgewater. “Good to have another person, specially from outside,” said Savadore Nutley. “If want to expedite things, I think third-party can be helpful.” New Jersey State Treasurer Elizabeth Muoio, a Democrat, says Sweeney’s plan threatens the balance of power. She says it ignores the informal consensus process that already exists in the state. Both houses of the Legislature must approve the proposed amendment by a three-fifths majority before Aug. 6 to get the question in front of voters this year. Even if the senate does so this week, it appears unlikely the assembly will take the measure up in time.

81-Year-Old Punched In Face, Chases Attacker In The Bronx

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – An elderly man in the Bronx didn’t get knocked down easily after being unexpectedly beat down from behind. Police say a seemingly random attack happened on Courtland Avenue last week in the Melrose section of the Bronx, according to CBS2’s Clark Fouraker. Surveillance video shows an 81-year-old man getting knocked down, but police say say he got up and chased his attackers away. Police say the victim was minding his own business when suddenly a suspect comes into the video frame and sucker punches the man in the back of the head. The man falls onto the pavement in between two cars parked on the curb. They say the elderly man suffered pain and bruising on his face and went to Lincoln Hospital in stable condition after chasing his attacker. Police say a suspect shown in a surveillance video punched an 81-year-old man in the Melrone section of The Bronx on July 15, 2018. (credit: NYPD) Police have release another clip they say is a head on shot of the suspect walking along the sidewalk with another person. The suspect is shown in the video on the left, with a flashing sign lighting his face before running off. Police are asking for the publics help in finding the man who threw the punch.

Trump, Putin Morph Into Same Person On Time Magazine Cover

(CNN/ CBS Local) — For the second month in a row, Time magazine has put a provocative photo illustration of President Trump on its cover — this time, morphing him into Russian President Vladimir Putin. In it, Trump’s distinctive blonde hair, wispy eyebrows and pursed lips merge with Putin’s nose and blue eyes. Time magazine cover of President Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin morphed into the same person. (TIME) The stunning photo illustration, by visual artist Nancy Burson, “is meant to represent this particular moment in U.S. foreign policy, following the pair’s recent meeting in Helsinki, Finland,” Time said in a statement. Trump has weathered heavy criticism from Democrats and Republicans alike for his performance at the meeting, where he publicly sided with Putin over US intelligence agencies’ assessment that the Russians interfered in the 2016 presidential election. Since coming back home from Finland, the President has changed his messaging and now says he holds Putin personally responsible for the election meddling and believes the assessment of government intelligence agencies. In addition to the still image for the July 30 issue, Burson created a video image as well, which morphs back and forth between the seemingly-ever changing appearances of the two men. Just last month, Time used the President in another striking image on its cover, when the Trump administration’s policy that separated families crossing the US border was dominating the headlines. In that stark photo illustration, the towering figure of Trump looms over a sobbing child, who is the subject of a now-iconic photograph taken by Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer John Moore. “Welcome to America,” the illustration reads. Use of the photo of the child generated controversy as well, after it was revealed that the 2-year-old Honduran girl had not been separated from her mother at the border. The latest image was created by a photography pioneer Burson, the designer of the latest cover, is a trailblazer in this type of art, starting with her work 30 years ago with scientists at MIT which led to the development of computer-generated compositing technology. She’s best known for developing a photographic face-aging technique that the FBI uses to find missing children, according to the Time statement. Her most famous aged image is the one of kidnapped 6-year-old Etan Patz that was on the front page of the New York Post in 1985. It showed what Patz might have looked like six years after his kidnapping. LAPD Releases Graphic Body Cam Footage Of Deadly Officer-Involved Shooting

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — The LAPD on Wednesday released body cam video of a deadly officer-involved shooting in Pacoima this past May. KCAL9’s Peter Daut reports the LAPD is still investigating the incident as witnesses come forward and toxicology tests are completed. They released footage leading up to the moments just before the deadly confrontation. They said they had no choice but to pull the trigger given the dangerous and unpredictable movements of the suspect. The footage was provided and edited by the LAPD. At the start, you see several officers responding to a call about a reported stabbing at a Pacoima home on May 30. You hear the sergeant placing officers and planning to approach the suspect in an effort to take him into custody. You then hear officers telling 29-year-old Bryan Rodriguez they are going to arrest him. Officers warn Rodriguez they will use a taser or bean-bag shotgun but he does not respond. “I’m giving you one more opportunity. Come out here with your hands up,” says one officer. Officers keep their distance — they are still concerned Rodriguez might be armed with a knife. After several more minutes trying to communicate with him, officers move towards him. They use a taser to take him down. The taser has no effect on Rodriguez. The officers warn him repeatedly to comply. They tell him he will be tased again if he doesn’t listen. They fire the taser and he again refuses to follow their orders. Officers then fire several non-lethal bean bag rounds at him. Again, they have very little effect on him. Rodriguez grabs a potted plant and throws it at officers striking some of them in the head. The suspect than gets on the roof of the home. Officers, meanwhile, rescue the person injured inside. Moments later, officers say they saw Rodriguez grab a pickax. Rodriguez throws several bricks at officers. Police then deploy a 40-millimeter launcher that shoots a foam projectile that does not penetrate the skin. Rodriguez continues to wield the pickax. After several minutes, Rodriguez goes inside the home and officers lose sight of him. Officers say he later emerges with the pickax. They tell him to drop it but instead they say he moved towards them with the ax and raised it above his head. That’s when officers open fire. Officers moved in and removed the ax from the scene. Police immediately call for an ambulance but Rodriguez dies at the scene. The stabbing victim was taken to a hospital where he was treated and later released. Officers recovered Rodriguez’s knife from the crime scene. Authorities said Rodriguez had a long criminal history. The Civilian Board of Police Commissioner’s will also evaluate the evidence to determine if the officer-involved shooting met proper standards.

Drone Video Shows Extent Of Woman’s Cliff Plunge Near Big Sur

CALIFORNIA (KPIX/CBS LOCAL) — After a woman was found alive and rescued seven days after she drove off a cliff near Big Sur , an aerial view shows just how miraculous her survival was. The wide view shot from the ocean side shows Angela Hernandez’ crumpled Jeep at the bottom of the 250-foot cliff leaves you with one thought: she could not have survived. But she did and Hernandez is recovering at an undisclosed hospital, while the story she posted on Facebook now being shared thousands of times. A closer look from a drone shot allows you to can see the faint black tire marks and chips from the stone wall where she swerved to dodge an animal on the road. The lack of skid marks likely means she never hit the brakes. Her white Jeep went airborne, slammed into the opposite cliff side and rolled down to the shore. The force of the impact knocked her unconscious, and she woke up with water up to her knees. The doors were basically crumpled shut as well, and the only way she can get out was to grab a multi tool out of her backpack and then smash the driver side window, and climb out. Janelle Solis and her daughters hiked the 2 1/2 mile roundtrip over sharp slippery rocks to see the wreckage for themselves. “Like God had to be watching her, all the way,” Solis told KPIX 5. Hernandez had broken ribs, two broken collarbones, a collapsed lung, and was barefoot, but still managed to scramble over half a mile of sharp rocks and boulders to find this fresh water runoff. Had she kept on walking another half-mile, she would have run into Kirk Creek Campground, one of the busiest in Big Sur. The next few days were spent climbing to higher ground, hoping that someone would see her. Day after day of exposure to the elements gave her a severe sunburn. Hernandez wrote, “Songs I hadn’t heard in years played on repeat inside my head. I’d daydream of food Ii get to eat once i was found, and imagine the face of the person who would eventually find me.” Several days later, Chelsea Moore and her husband just happened to be on the desolate beach. They inspected the Jeep, and because it looked rested they figured it was an old crash, and started walking away. Something made Hernandez wake up, she noticed Chelsea and cried for help. “Can’t believe you’re alive Angela, You’re a hero, that’s unreal, you made it,” Chad Moore said. “Total legend, You’re here for reason, and we were there for a reason, and we’re so glad she’s OK,” said Chelsea Moore. How is it that the Jeep crumpled everywhere except for the driver seat? How did she end up next to a freshwater spring which allowed her to drink water for the week she was missing. And what made her wake up just in time to see her rescuers? “Someone was watching over her, not only during that 250-foot plunge, but the whole seven days she was down there,” said Monterey County Sheriff Steve Bernal.

Mother Opens Up About Son’s Murder

SOUTH LA (CBSLA) — Eight months after her son was shot and killed, Nicole Williams still can’t believe he’s gone. “Every day I cannot believe this is real. I want to wake up and believe this was a dream,” said Williams. “I love him so much. I miss him so much. It’s an indescribable pain.” The LAPD says on November 14th, Antonio Maurice Wilson, who everyone called Tony, was one of several people standing in a parking lot at a shopping center on 43rd Street and Vermont. The 27-year-old had just picked up his food and was on his way home when someone walked up and fired shots at the crowd. The shooter then ran back to a car where a driver was waiting. They took off, but Antonio was shot many times. At the hospital, his mother Nicole was at his side. “I asked him several times when he was awake, ‘Tony, do you know who did this to you, what happened?’ He just kept saying no, he did not know them. His tears were rolling down, He just kept shaking his head no,” said Williams. After 16 days in the hospital, Tony passed away. Nicole soon focused her energy into helping police find her son’s killer. The LAPD says Tony was an innocent bystander in a shooting that was retaliation against a local rival gang. They believe there were people there who saw the shooter and have information, Nicole is angry they aren’t coming forward. “You are being held hostage in your own community. You can become a victim, your mother, your child, your family member could become a victim of the same people because you’re allowing them to still walk the streets.” As Nicole continues her fight for justice, she’s had to help Tony’s 7-year-old son understand what happened to his father — a loving, funny, and talented singer. She hopes a $50,000 reward will help convince someone to speak up. “Stop being concerned about being a snitch. Small Plane Lands On NJ Beach After Developing Engine Problems

KEANSBURG, N.J. (AP) — Authorities say a small plane made an emergency landing on a New Jersey shore beach after the pilot reported an engine-related problem. The Federal Aviation Administration says single-engine Cessna 172 plane touched down in Keansburg around 10:25 a.m. Friday. Two people were aboard the aircraft, and it wasn’t immediately clear if either person was injured. Their names were not released. It did not appear that anyone was on the beach at the time the plane landed. No injuries on the ground were reported. The cause of the plane’s engine problems remain under investigation. German officials deny that the controversial Nord Stream pipeline will allow Russia to exert undue influence over their country. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg tried to keep the peace. “We are stronger together than apart,” Stoltenberg said. “How can you be together when a country is getting its energy from the person you want protection against?” Trump responded. “Because we understand that when we stand together, also in dealing with Russia, we are stronger,” Stoltenberg said.

Boat Runs Aground In Playa Del Rey

PLAYA DEL REY (CBSLA) – A boat ran aground at Dockweiler State Beach overnight Monday. The 40-foot boat with one person aboard ran aground at around midnight off the 12000 block of Vista Del Mar. Los Angeles County Fire Department lifeguards, El Segundo Fire Department crews and Los Angeles police responded and safely rescued the person. Crews would attempt to get the boat back in the water at around 8:30 a.m. Tuesday. The circumstances that led up to the boat being grounded were unclear. The damage to the boat, if any, was also not confirmed.

(CBSNewYork/AP) — President Donald Trump is expected to announce his decision on a replacement for Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy Monday night. “I’m very close to making a final decision. And I believe this person will do a great job,” Trump said Sunday as he prepared to return to Washington from a weekend trip at his New Jersey golf club. Asked by reporters how many people were being considered, the president said: “Let’s say it’s the four people … they’re excellent, every one. You can’t go wrong.” Of the four, CBS News reports there are three final contenders including federal appeals judges Brett Kavanaugh, Raymond Kethledge, and Amy Coney Barrett. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina and Roy Blunt of Missouri said Sunday that they believe any of the top four contenders could get confirmed by the GOP-majority Senate. “I think we can confirm any of the four names being mentioned,” Blunt said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” ”They’re good judges. I think they’d be fine justices of the Supreme Court. I do think the president has to think about who is the easiest to get confirmed here. FDNY: Cause Of Fatal Brooklyn Fire Accidental

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Fire marshals have determined a fire that claimed the life of a 95-year-old woman Saturday in Brooklyn was accidental. The cause of the 2-alarm blaze, which broke out around 3 p.m. on East 93rd Street, was electrical from a power strip, the FDNY said on Twitter Sunday. Per #FDNY Fire Marshals: Cause of 7/7 fatal 2-alarm fire, 1358 E 93 St #Brooklyn was accidental, electrical, power strip. Smoke alarm not present in basement. Present but not operational on 1st and 2nd floors. — FDNY (@FDNY) July 8, 2018 They said a smoke alarm was not present in the basement and were present but not operational on the first and second floors. Esther Benoit, the homeowner and victim’s daughter, said flames and smoke filled the home. “The smoke was so strong and heavy, so I went outside and I said ‘fire, fire!’ I tried to go and get her, but the smoke was too heavy,” Benoit told CBS2’s Reena Roy. “Nothing can replace my mother.” A firefighter and another person suffered minor injuries.
