PAHO seeking funds for COVID-19 vaccine storage

THE Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) says it is now seeking to drum up funding to assist countries in the Americas with central warehouses and cold storage units for COVID-19 vaccines.PAHO Assistant Director Dr Jarbas Barbosa said yesterday that no country within or outside the region is ready to deal with the storage conditions for these vaccines, as there are no other vaccines with the same characteristics as those for COVID-19.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Monday night was potentially life-changing for New York Giants player Logan Ryan , but it had nothing to do with the game at MetLife Stadium , CBS2’s Steve Overmyer reported. After the game, Ryan had a phone call with his wife Ashley, who had flown to Florida to check on their house. “She was telling me about some pains she had in her stomach. She wanted to sleep it off. She was in extreme pain, but she said she’d wait until morning,” Ryan said. Ryan was hurt during the game , so he was still at the stadium during the call at 1 a.m., and he was sitting right next to trainer Justin Maher. “He said, ‘No, she needs to go to the ER,’” Ryan told Overmyer. A trip to the emergency room seemed a bit extreme, but she heeded Maher’s advice, which proved to be life-altering. “They ended up catching… ectopic pregnancy,” Ryan said. Ashley wrote in an Instagram post that Logan smiled when he heard the word “pregnancy” and the thought of adding to their family. But, an ectopic pregnancy is not viable, and potentially life-threatening. “The egg was in the wrong place in her fallopian tube and it was about to burst,” said Ryan. The couple credits Maher, whose quick thinking was critical. “Telling my wife to go to the ER at 1 a.m. could’ve saved her life,” said Ryan. Ashley is OK and recovering. Orthodox Jewish Community’s All-Women EMS Service Ezras Nashim Finally Gets First Ambulance

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Some call it controversial, others call it a life saver. In time for the onset of a second wave of the coronavirus, an all-women’s EMS service in Brooklyn is finally getting an ambulance after overcoming naysayers in the city who tried to prevent it from happening. As CBS2’s Lisa Rozner reported, 4-month-old Sarah Richter sleeps peacefully, even in the pouring rain. “She’s a miracle. They are a miracle,” her mother, Chani Richter, told Rozner. Richter was talking about the organization Ezras Nashim , which helped deliver her baby at home. “She came too fast, I had no labor, so I called Ezras Nashim, because they were on my speed dial,” she said. “In two minutes flat, they turned my bathroom into a hospital room.” Then, 911 had to be called to take the mother and baby to a hospital, and multiple first responders arrived. Richter only wishes then that the group had the $100,000 ambulance that just arrived.  Donations helped purchase the ambulance and a $50,000 stretcher. Men and women who are not married do not touch each other. For 50 years, the male volunteer corps Hatzoloh has served the community, but it does not accept female paramedics . “In an emergency situation, and I’m sitting there undressed or I need to– whatever it is, I don’t want a man there. No, I don’t feel comfortable with that,” said Richter. “That’s not my choice.” Ezras Nashim, an all-women’s EMS service in Brooklyn, has finally gotten an ambulance after overcoming naysayers who tried to prevent it from happening. (Credit: Simon Gifter) After years of fighting for an ambulance so it could speed up response times, the state Department of Health finally gave Ezras Nashim the approval in August — months after the application was rejected by a city committee over concerns patients would be confused who to call. “It’s like a dream. I feel like I’m dreaming, it’s wonderful,” volunteer Sarah Husney told Rozner. “We finally grew from such a small group to something so big, you know, to have our first ambulance on the streets,” volunteer Emanual Rabaev added. “It got busier.” The group is finalizing paperwork that state inspectors need before coming out to give the ambulance the OK. The hope is to have it up and running and serving the community in the next several weeks. The organization is also in the process of filling the ambulance with specific supplies and equipment required by the state. Europe sees sharp rise in measles

BERLIN, Germany (AP) — The World Health Organization says the number of measles cases in Europe jumped sharply during the first six months of 2018 and at least 37 people have died.The UN agency’s European office said yesterday that more than 41,000 measles cases were reported in the region during the first half of the year — more than in all 12-month periods so far this decade.

WASHINGTON (CBS SPORTS) — Trade buzz surrounding Orioles infielder Manny Machado is at an all-time high right now, and according to multiple reports he’s likely to be dealt before play resumes coming out of the All-Star break. Bear in mind that the Orioles have a somewhat complicated recent history when it comes to signing off on players’ medicals, so some hurdles may remain. As for those tax concerns that Rosenthal notes, the Dodgers conducted their entire offseason with the goal of resetting their competitive balance tax status and thus not paying those penalties. Given that Machado is owed the balance of a $16 million salary for 2018 and given that the Dodgers are right up against the tax threshold, they’ll need some cash from Baltimore or to send a pricey contract the other way. That, in turn, means the Orioles can ask for more on the prospect front. Machado makes sense given that the Dodgers lost franchise shortstop Corey Seager to Tommy John surgery, and that in tandem with the lack of production at second base has left them thin in the infield. Adding Machado and installing him at short would allow the Dodgers to shift Chris Taylor from short to second base and thus plug that hole. As for Machado’s merits, he’s in the midst of a career year. At the break, he’s batting .315/.387/.575 (164 OPS+) with 24 home runs in 96 games. He’s also returned to his original position of shortstop this season. While returns are mixed on his fielding at that premium spot, he has proved capable of manning it on a daily basis (notable given his past knee injuries). Machado is also a pending free agent, and by all accounts he’s determined to test the market. Given that the Dodgers have Seager and Justin Turner installed at short and third, respectively, they can sensibly take Machado on as a temporary fix. Rosenthal spoke to Machado about the rumors during Tuesday night’s All-Star Game at Nationals Park. Here’s what he said on what may be his last day as an Oriole: “I just try not to think about it, to be honest. I try to enjoy this moment with the American League guys and just enjoy this with these guys that I’ve played with for a long time. “It’s been a tremendous honor to wear this uniform. They gave me an opportunity to come up and play in the big leagues — that’s everyone’s dream. They gave me that. They gave me the opportunity to play shortstop again. The organization has done everything, so if this is the last time, hopefully I treated them well and did everything I could for this organization. “I’m just trying to enjoy this off day tomorrow. I mean, I don’t know if I’m going to get a call or not, but I’m just trying to enjoy this last off day. As of now, I haven’t heard of anything.” The SportsLine Projection Model was already high on the Dodgers for the rest of the season and has them as the leader in World Series probability in the National League. The forecast gives the Dodgers a bit of a boost, going from 94.1 wins without Machado to 94.6 with the addition of the Orioles infielder. Postseason odds go from 94.7 to 96.5 percent. As far as winning the World Series? Machado would raise the Dodgers’ chances from 23.7 to 24 percent. Jacob DeGrom’s Agent To Mets: Sign Extension Or Trade Ace

WASHINGTON (CBS Sports) —  Mets  ace  Jacob deGrom  has obviously been a bright spot in an otherwise dismal 2018 for the Queenslanders. Despite the Mets’ being on pace for 95 losses and a last-place finish (yes, they’re behind the  Marlins  in the standings) deGrom has positioned himself as an NL Cy Young contender. In his age-30 season, the All-Star deGrom has pitched to an  MLB -best 1.68 ERA with a 4.97 K/BB ratio after 19 starts. For his career, he owns a sparkling 140 ERA+ across parts of five big-league seasons. Yes, deGrom has had injury concerns in the past, but it’s all come together this season. His excellence in tandem with the Mets’ awfulness has led to speculation and even reportage that he’ll be traded prior to the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline. As well, deGrom isn’t eligible for free agency until after the 2020 season, which only adds to his appeal on the market. The Mets themselves have sent mixed signals on this matter, especially since GM Sandy Alderson took a leave of absence to focus on his health. As for deGrom and his representatives, they sound like they’d like the Mets to make a choice. It's up to them what they want to do.” — Anthony DiComo (@AnthonyDiComo) July 16, 2018 As a front-line contributor still in his pre-free agency years, deGrom’s been paid far less than he’s been worth to the Mets. DeGrom’s also older than most players of similar service time, so he’s likely open to signing away a free-agent year or two in exchange for financial security. The Mets, though, must decide if deGrom is going to be around and in something near peak form by the time they’re ready to contend again. If not, they should trade him for valuable prospects — especially since he’s their most valuable potential trade chip. That the Mets are faced with this choice isn’t exactly breaking news, but it’s notable when an agent and his client directly lay it out in those terms. While the Mets don’t matter in terms of the current standings, what path they take before July 31 will have major impact on the future of the organization. Perhaps there’s no bigger decision than how to handle deGrom’s future as a Met.

Revelation About LA Deputies’ Secret Clique Sparks Calls For Investigation

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) – Concern is growing over a supposed secret clique of Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies who brand their members with matching skull tattoos. The revelation this week that a deputy admitted to getting inked two years ago as part of a ritual within the LASD Compton station has raised concerns that deputy cliques, long part of a controversial agency subculture, have persisted despite the department’s reform efforts, the Los Angeles Times reported Friday. Some members of the Sheriff Civilian Oversight Commission are calling on LASD to investigate the issue. Hernan Vera, who serves on the SCOC, said the deputy’s admission in a lawsuit over a fatal shooting that he and as many as 20 others have the signature tattoos was “thoroughly disturbing,” The Times reported. The latest revelations, detailed this week by the Times, center on a deposition given in May by Deputy Samuel Aldama, who described under oath a tattoo on his calf featuring a skull in a military-style helmet bearing the letters CPT, for Compton, along with a rifle, encircled by flames. He said he got the tattoo in June 2016, about two months before he was involved in the fatal shooting of Donta Taylor, The Times reported. Sheriff Jim McDonnell said that for the last year, the department has been examining deputy tattoos, logos and symbolism within the organization, but he hasn’t launched a new investigation into the Compton station deputies. He said there is also a separate administrative investigation into the shooting, which may address the deputy’s admissions. The department has a history of clandestine groups with names like the Regulators, Grim Reapers and Jump Out Boys that have been accused of promoting highly aggressive tactics and perpetuating a code of silence among members. The group behind the Academy Awards recently touted its largest and most diverse class of invitees from all aspects of filmmaking. The 2018 class, 49 percent female and 38 percent people of color, is the academy’s latest move to diversify its white male-dominant voting membership. Seigner is best known in the U.S. for her work in Julian Schnabel’s “The Diving Bell and the Butterfly.” She responded to the academy’s invitation with a letter to the French newspaper Le Journal du Dimanche, blasting “the insufferable hypocrisy” in their dealings with Polanski, according to the Los Angeles Times. The celebrated director, known for films like “Rosemary’s Baby,” and winner of the 2003 Oscar for best director for “The Pianist,” was expelled from the academy, along with Bill Cosby, “in accordance with the organization’s Standards of Conduct.” The expulsion comes decades after Polanski fled the U.S. in 1978, before he could be sentenced for unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor, a charge to which he pleaded guilty. In her letter, Seigner criticized the way the Academy treated Polanski – expelling him after awarding him an Oscar for “The Pianist,” a move she called “a curious case of amnesia!” Citing Polanski’s work directing “unforgettable female characters,” Seigner argued that artists aren’t exempt from justice, “but it should be the same justice that exists for all, not a justice that goes back on its word and violates its own principles. That was the case in Los Angeles in 1977, when his first confinement in prison was supposed to be his punishment.
