OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (CBS Local) – Three teens were rescued in Kansas after they reportedly tried to raft down a storm drain near an Overland Park highway. First responders say they received a call on July 17 claiming the boys had gotten stuck while rafting near the 119th Street and 69 Highway. Police say the teens were inches from the exit when rescuers found them, but called the stunt “dangerous for them and emergency crews,” according to KCTV . One boy, who told KCTV that he was on the raft that was rescued, is disputing the entire report by police. The unidentified teen claims the raft deflated and traveled the entire route of the storm drain. The boy also says his group had just reached the end of the passage and they were preparing to head back up the drain when rescue crews arrived. The alleged rafter also claimed there were no signs posted saying the storm drain was off limits. However, there is a sign along the sidewalk that reads, “Danger. Storm Drain. No Play Area.” The boys only suffered cuts and scrapes according to police.

Memphis, TN (CNN/ CBS Local) — A Memphis woman said she feels betrayed after her date stole her car and then used it to go on a date with her God sister. As far as nights out go, Faith Pugh said the one she had Saturday with Kelton Griffin was disappointing from the beginning. She said when he showed up, he didn’t even bring his own car. “I don’t know who dropped him off. He just got dropped off,” Pugh said. Pugh said she knew Griffin from their years in high school, but hadn’t spoken to him much lately until he reached out and suggested dinner. “He just out of the blue texted me and asked me to go out,” Pugh said. They took Pugh’s black Volvo, but then Pugh said Griffin couldn’t decide where he wanted to take her. They ended up stopping at an Airport Area gas station. “He asked me could I go in the gas station for him to get a cigar,” she said. It turns out that was a big mistake. “He drove off. I came outside and my car was gone,” Pugh said. Pugh said her mother picked her up, but then she got a surprising text from her God sister, saying Griffin had asked her out. “I said, ‘Okay, well send me the address to where you at, and I’m on my way. Tell him to come on,’” she said. Pugh said they used the GPS on her God sister’s phone to tail Griffin before losing him, but then found him again at a drive-in movie theater on Summer Avenue. Pugh said he was in her car with her God sister. “He let her drive, so she drove him to the drive-in. He didn’t even have any money. She actually paid their way to get in the drive-in just so I could get my car back,” Pugh said. Police arrested Griffin that night. It’s not his first arrest. In 2016, police said he and two other men ate out before robbing a restaurant. If he’s looking for company for his next meal out, Pugh said he needn’t look to her. “I hope he’s in jail for a long time. I never want to speak to him ever again,” she said. CLAYTON, Mo. (CBS Local) – The Clayton Police Department in Missouri has issued an apology after its police officers stopped 10 black Washington University students for allegedly not paying for their meal at an IHOP restaurant on July 7. CBS St. Louis affiliate KMOV-TV reports that the incoming freshmen had just left the eatery when police received a call that a group of diners just left without paying. Clayton police officers reportedly made the students walk back to the restaurant. However, City of Clayton officials claim the students offered to return to IHOP to clear up the situation. Some of the students also showed receipts proving they had paid for their meals. After officers escorted the students back to the IHOP, the manager said the students weren’t the suspects that failed to pay. The manager had contacted police to report that a $60 tab wasn’t paid by a group of black customers. That’s the procedure called for by IHOP policy. A short time later, police spotted the group of teens. Clayton police say they were stopped because they were carrying IHOP bags and some of the black students fit the description given to them by the restaurant manager. The 10, who were on campus as part of a summer program, told KMOV-TV they felt that they’d been racially profiled. “I don’t know how you can take that into account,” Clayton Police Chief Kevin Murphy told KMOV-TV. The school issued a statement expressing disappointment over the false accusations. “The fact that these students, all of whom are African American, were scared and humiliated is unacceptable to us,” Washington University said in the statement. “We have shared the sentiment with the City of Clayton and have had an opportunity to meet with city leaders to reiterate our concerns.” The Clayton P.D. said the IHOP involved has had 45 “dine and dash” calls since January and that “collateral damage” such as the incident involving the students was an “additional cost of this kind of criminal activity.” The department also said it’s open to ways it can perform better in similar situations. “Our department has and will continue to study what could have been done better in this and in all incidents where we have complaints,” the Clayton PD said in its statement. “Even without any apparent policy or legal violations, we look for ways to improve and make our officers even more effective in positive interactions.” [H/T CBS News ]

GREENVILLE, N.C. (AP/CBS Local) – A woman says her request for a specialty license plate to honor her wife has been denied by the North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles. Amy Bright told WFMY-TV in Greensboro she wanted a plate reading “LSBNSNLV,” for “lesbians in love.” The DMV issued a statement saying the agency has the right to deny any license plate it deems “offensive to good taste and decency.” The Greenville woman said it’s ridiculous she can’t celebrate her wife this way. Bright notes her request has no curse words or hate speech. She said she previously had a plate reading “OUTLSBN,” for “out lesbian.” She is appealing and says she’ll sue if the appeal is denied. The DMV says it has rejected more than 7,000 license plate requests over the years. (Copyright 2018 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. Cardinals Tight End Ricky Seals-Jones Arrested After Trying To Use Hotel Bathroom
Ryan Mayer Arizona Cardinals tight end Ricky Seals-Jones was arrested at the W Scottsdale on Saturday night on three charges after a fight ensued when he attempted to gain access to the hotel’s bathroom. The 23-year-old was arrested on charges of assault, disorderly conduct and third-degree criminal trespassing after witnesses said that he pushed a member of the hotel’s security team who was working at the entrance of the hotel. Police said that Seals-Jones appeared to be drunk with “bloodshot watery eyes”. According to ESPN , Seals-Jones attempted to enter the hotel to use the bathroom and was told that it was only open to hotel guests at that time. He then proceeded to enter a sushi restaurant connected to the hotel that was blocked off with ropes and stanchions. After entering the restaurant, he was confronted by hotel employees who tried to get him to leave, but that’s when things became physical according to the employees. “He became combative, pushed me,” one of the hotel employees said in the report. The employee explained that Seals-Jones “shoved” him in the shoulder. That, according to the report, is when the hotel employees “went hands on” Seals-Jones, tackling him to the ground in an attempt to get him out of the hotel.” Seals-Jones was taken to a Scottsdale jail after the incident. He was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Cardinals prior to last season after a four-year career at Texas A&M. In 10 games for the Cardinals last season, Seals-Jones caught 12 passes for 201 yards with three touchdowns. He is the second member of the Cardinals organization to be arrested in the last two weeks with General Manager Steve Keim being arrested for DUI last week. Keim was recently suspended five games after pleading guilty to extreme DUI .

Ryan Mayer The Savannah Bananas are a summer league team that competes in the Coastal Plain League with a roster that features college baseball players from across the country. On Tuesday night, they played host to the Macon Bacon, a similarly delightfully rhyming team name, but the most notable part of the night was the Bananas team attire. Real Ballplayers Wear Kilts. pic.twitter.com/CVJz0DSLGQ — Savannah Bananas (@TheSavBananas) July 17, 2018 Yes, you’re seeing that correctly. The team wore kilts as part of their St. Patrick’s Day celebration (a couple months late, but to be fair, the season didn’t start until May 31st) and, in case you thought the kilts were just for the photo opp before the game, the team account provided video evidence that the players were actually playing in the kilts. No we were not joking. They are wearing kilts the whole game. First pitch in a kilt. pic.twitter.com/s1Vc252hBa — Savannah Bananas (@TheSavBananas) July 17, 2018 Unfortunately, due to inclement weather, the game was postponed after just half an inning of play. But, don’t fret, the team has announced the game will be made up on July 25th and the kilts will be making a return for that night.

Sterling, VA (CBS Local)- A pickup game at a LA Fitness gym in Virginia took a serious turn when one of the participants called the police after being fouled. He told the station that the man who called the police is a regular at the LA Fitness in Dulles Town Center and has played basketball there many times. Apparently, the man ran into a hard screen during the course of the pickup game and was knocked to the floor. According to the witness, identified as Aaron, the man was upset by the screen and threatened to call the police before walking off the court. Aaron believed the man was joking, but sure enough the man went to the front desk to call 911. “When the cops came, he was like, ‘why are you wasting my time?’” Aaron told FOX 5. The gym has confirmed that the incident occurred, but there is no surveillance footage of the incident because there are no cameras focused on the court. The Loudon County Sheriff’s Office has yet to comment.

FORT MORGAN, Ala. (CBS Local) – Wildlife conservationists in Alabama are expressing outrage after the body of an endangered type of sea turtle washed ashore with a beach chair wrapped around its neck. The graphic Facebook post documents how a discarded chair with the University of Alabama logo on it was tangled around the animal’s neck as it laid face up on the Fort Morgan beach. “The chair had barnacles on it so had been in the water for a while. So much stuff left on the beach washes into the gulf. Why we need something like ‘Leave Only Footprints,’” Debbie Harbin of Share the Beach Fort Morgan told WKRG . “Leave Only Footprints” promotes green initiatives and raises awareness about the dangers of littering in Alabama and the Gulf Coast region. Kemp’s Ridley sea turtles are classified as endangered by the U.S. Federal Endangered Species Act.

FLORIDA (CBS Local) – A couple in Florida is warning other parents about food packaging labels after their teenage daughter died from eating a cookie. Kellie Travers-Stafford and her husband, Michael, lost their 15-year-old after she reportedly ate a Chips Ahoy! cookie while at a friend’s house. Alexi Ryann Stafford, who had a peanut allergy, didn’t realize the cookie she took was one of Chips Ahoy’s “Reese’s peanut butter cups” treats. Tragically, the teen went into anaphylactic shock and died shortly after eating the cookie on June 25. Her mother’s Facebook post about the tragedy on July 12 has been shared over 70,000 times. The parents are calling for greater awareness about packaging labels which may not make it clear that the products inside are harmful to people with peanut allergies. Travers-Stafford says her daughter’s mistake was caused by the cookie wrapper being pulled back and there not being a warning notice on the label for peanut allergy sufferers. “I feel lost and angry because she knew her limits and was aware of familiar packaging, she knew what ‘safe’ was,” the mother wrote. “A small added indication on the pulled back flap on a familiar red package wasn’t enough to call out to her that there was “peanut product” in the cookies before it was too late.” A memorial fund for the teen was set up by friends and family on GoFundMe . The page has raised nearly $30,000 in three weeks to cover the family’s funeral expenses.

GoFundMe Campaign Seeks To Bring ‘Trump Baby’ Balloon To President’s New Jersey Golf Club
(CBS Philly/CBS Local) — A local activist has created a GoFundMe campaign to bring the “Trump Baby” balloon to President Donald Trump’s golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey. Didier Jiménez-Castro created the “ Fund To Bring Baby Trump To America ” campaign on July 13, the same day that London’s “Trump Baby” balloon made its debut at a protest. Jiménez-Castro, who says the London balloon inspired him to act, currently works for a homeless shelter that helps families. “Humor is a huge tool,” Jiménez-Castro noted in regards to the ballon’s ability to be an effective way to bring attention to important issues. Protesting Paraglider Flies ‘Resist’ Sign Over President Trump In one day, 230 people backed the GoFundMe campaign and helped it exceed its $4,500 goal by nearly $800. Sixty percent of the donations were raised by women and Jiménez said he was “really proud of women for leading in this.” The Trump administration has been receiving immense backlash for how its handled the immigration policy that has allowed for the separation of parents and children that illegally enter the United States. While Jiménez-Castro disagrees with Trump’s policies like Social Security and immigration, he emphasizes that he isn’t interested in being seen as anti-Trump. “This is about doing some real activism,” Jiménez-Castro explained. Some of those issues were at the center of protests in Philadelphia in early July outside of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement building. Police and protesters clashed outside of the ICE building on July 3 and July 5. Multiple states, including Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware , sued the Trump administration for separating immigrant families. The balloon originally made news when London’s Mayor Sadiq Khan approved of protesters to use the balloon during Trump’s visit after 10,000 people signed a petition. A similar petition was created and backed by over 16,000 in Scotland for Trump’s three-day tour of the United Kingdom. ‘Trump Baby’ Balloon Gets Green Light From London Mayor Jiménez-Castro and other organizers hope that they will be able to fly the balloon at the Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster . “We want to go on a tour. We will definitely bring [the balloon] to Central Park,” he said. It is not yet known when or if officials will allow the balloon to fly in Bedminster. However, Jiménez-Castro gave a rough timeline of three to four weeks before the manufacturer said it will arrive stateside. “This project has united a lot of people,” he said as he attributes teamwork to making the balloon come to the U.S. possible. A CBS News poll found that Trump’s approval rating has inched up to 42 percent in June — his highest rating in more than a year.
