NJ Woman Who Survived Crash That Killed Husband, 4 Daughters Speaks Out

TEANECK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) — A New Jersey woman who survived a crash that killed her husband and four daughters on a Delaware highway is speaking out for the first time. The crash happened earlier this month as the family from Teaneck was headed home from a vacation in Ocean City, Maryland. Authorities said a pickup truck heading in the wrong direction on Route 1 in Delaware collided with their minivan, killing 61-year-old Audi Trinidad and his daughters, 20-year-old Kaitlyn, 17-year-old Danna and 13-year-old twins Melissa and Allison. Their mother, Mary Rose, was the only one to survive. Authorities say the four girls were not wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash. “I lost my family last July 6 because of a man in a truck crossed a wide grassy median and struck our car coming in the wrong direction,” Mary Rose said at a news conference Friday. “He is still walking free and I have to bury my husband and four daughters.” So far, criminal charges have not yet been filed in the case. Mary Rose said Friday that she wants justice for her family and to see the driver of the pickup “criminally prosecuted.” “All my broken bones and injuries will heal but not the unbearable pain my heart,” she said. “Now that they’re all gone, I have nothing to look forward to but justice for them.” Attorneys for the family say they’ve been told the investigation into the crash is “complicated” and may take a few months. Mary Rose, who spent her life helping others as a nurse, won’t be able to hold a funeral for her family until she’s well enough to attend. “She’s got a broken left arm with infections, both knees are fractured with surgery, she has fractured ribs, fractured shoulders and a fractured right hip,” lawyer Diane Lucianna said. Doctors say it may be weeks before she walks again.

Revival Of Tax Credits To Help New Jersey Win As Next New Hollywood

TOM’S RIVER, N.J. (CBSNewYork) – Ocean County is ready to step into the spotlight and showcase its beaches and boardwalks. Since Gov. Phil Murphy signed into law the Garden State Film and Digital Media Jobs Act , which provides companies with tax credits for certain expenses incurred while filming, the New Jersey county is hoping to be the next Hollywood, reports CBS2’s Meg Baker. “We not only have gorgeous 44 miles of beaches in Ocean County, but we also have the Barnegat Bay, we also have the Pine Barrens, which is the mystique of the Pine Barrens and the beauty of that, and then we have farm land,” said Dana Lancellotti, Division Director of Business Development and Tourism for Ocean County. This New Jersey pride is shared by the locals. “Where I’m from — I live by the woods and what not — but if you travel 10 minutes, you can see the beach. So it’s very diverse,” said Gabriella Alexander, of Toms River. “It’s the beach, it’s the summer town, but it’s also the small-town feel,” said Charlie Coraggio, of Lacey. The Board of Freeholders has established a film and television advisory commission to entice production companies to bring their projects to the area. Gov. Chris Christie suspended the production tax credits program in 2010, saying it was not affordable. The new state law now in effect provides up to $75 million in tax credits for film production and up to $10 million for digital media over five years. Officials say the movie biz down the shore thrived decades ago, with films like Ragtime and Woody Allen’s Stardust Memories . More recently, scenes in the remake of The Manchurian Candidate were filmed on the beach. “They actually made our sand areas down in southern Ocean County look like it was a desert, so that’s pretty funny. So they were able to use our backdrop to represent someplace that was nowhere near here,” said Lancellotti. But then, the industry found cheaper locations to shoot. Tourism is a $4.8 billion economic engine for the county, and by adding stars and bright lights to the equation, that could mean millions more. “They need to stay in the area, the hotels benefit, the services and restaurants and everything benefit from crews being here,” said Lancellotti “But it also shows the picturesque beauty.” Conversations with the film industry have already begun. The plan is to bring in jobs and give the county a positive image nationally.

Flex Alert Issued Due To High Temperatures Across The West

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — With triple-digit temperatures forecast across much of Southern California Tuesday, the state has issued a Flex Alert to urge electricity conservation for high-usage hours. The hottest days of the heat wave are expected to be Tuesday and Wednesday, raising concerns for power outages, heat-related illnesses, and wildfire danger. “Consumers are urged to conserve electricity especially during the late afternoon and evening, when air conditioners typically are at peak use,” a California ISO statement said. “Consumers can help avoid power interruptions by turning off all unnecessary lights, using major appliances before 5 p.m. and after 9 p.m., and setting air conditioners to 78 degrees or higher.” High temperatures across the western U.S. prompted the Flex Alert. The excessive heat warning will be in force along the L.A. County coast, in beach cities, metropolitan Los Angeles, Downtown L.A., and the Hollywood Hills; the San Gabriel, San Fernando, Santa Clarita and Antelope valleys; the San Gabriel and Santa Monica mountains; and inland Orange County, where highs will range from the mid-90s to 104. It will expire at 8 p.m. Thursday. Also in effect was a less serious heat advisory scheduled to expire in Orange County at 9 p.m. Thursday. There won’t be much relief from the heat along the coasts, but people seeking to cool down in the ocean should beware of bigger waves and strong rip currents. A high surf advisory will be in force in L.A. and Orange counties until 9 p.m. Wednesday and surf of 4-7 feet is expected through Wednesday night in L.A and Ventura counties, with maximum sets to 9 feet. CALIFORNIA (KPIX/CBS LOCAL) — After a woman was found alive and rescued seven days after she drove off a cliff near Big Sur , an aerial view shows just how miraculous her survival was. The wide view shot from the ocean side shows Angela Hernandez’ crumpled Jeep at the bottom of the 250-foot cliff leaves you with one thought: she could not have survived. But she did and Hernandez is recovering at an undisclosed hospital, while the story she posted on Facebook now being shared thousands of times. A closer look from a drone shot allows you to can see the faint black tire marks and chips from the stone wall where she swerved to dodge an animal on the road. The lack of skid marks likely means she never hit the brakes. Her white Jeep went airborne, slammed into the opposite cliff side and rolled down to the shore. The force of the impact knocked her unconscious, and she woke up with water up to her knees. The doors were basically crumpled shut as well, and the only way she can get out was to grab a multi tool out of her backpack and then smash the driver side window, and climb out. Janelle Solis and her daughters hiked the 2 1/2 mile roundtrip over sharp slippery rocks to see the wreckage for themselves. “Like God had to be watching her, all the way,” Solis told KPIX 5. Hernandez had broken ribs, two broken collarbones, a collapsed lung, and was barefoot, but still managed to scramble over half a mile of sharp rocks and boulders to find this fresh water runoff. Had she kept on walking another half-mile, she would have run into Kirk Creek Campground, one of the busiest in Big Sur. The next few days were spent climbing to higher ground, hoping that someone would see her. Day after day of exposure to the elements gave her a severe sunburn. Hernandez wrote, “Songs I hadn’t heard in years played on repeat inside my head. I’d daydream of food Ii get to eat once i was found, and imagine the face of the person who would eventually find me.” Several days later, Chelsea Moore and her husband just happened to be on the desolate beach. They inspected the Jeep, and because it looked rested they figured it was an old crash, and started walking away. Something made Hernandez wake up, she noticed Chelsea and cried for help. “Can’t believe you’re alive Angela, You’re a hero, that’s unreal, you made it,” Chad Moore said. “Total legend, You’re here for reason, and we were there for a reason, and we’re so glad she’s OK,” said Chelsea Moore. How is it that the Jeep crumpled everywhere except for the driver seat? How did she end up next to a freshwater spring which allowed her to drink water for the week she was missing. And what made her wake up just in time to see her rescuers? “Someone was watching over her, not only during that 250-foot plunge, but the whole seven days she was down there,” said Monterey County Sheriff Steve Bernal.

California’s Iconic Highway 1 Near Big Sur Reopens Today

BIG SUR (CBSLA/AP) — California transportation officials say an iconic stretch of Highway 1 in the scenic Big Sur coastal region that was blocked last year by a massive landslide will reopen to traffic Wednesday. Instead of trying to clear the scenic highway of the 1 million tons of rock and dirt that had come down, state transportation officials instead decided to build a new road on top of it, a project that cost $54 million.

(CBS News) — New restrictions are in place for boaters near Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano after a lava explosion injured 23 people on a sightseeing tour. One woman suffered a broken leg and others were burned when the blast sent rocks crashing through the boat’s roof. “The explosion looked like a gigantic firework, right off the side of the boat,” said passenger Kirk Olsen, who says the sightseeing boat was about 100 yards off the coast when a basketball-sized lava bomb crashed through the roof. Capturing the irresistible, horrifying beauty of Kilauea volcano “It was suddenly bedlam. There was screaming… You’d look on the floor and there were hot lava rocks glowing,” Olsen said. The boat that was hit is run by Lava Ocean Tours, one of several companies that takes visitors to see Kilauea’s lava pouring into the ocean. Tourists on nearby boats could see the thick plume of steam and hot ash blasting into the sky, reports CBS News’ Carter Evans. Nearly two dozen people on board were treated for burns and scrapes and one woman was hospitalized with a broken femur. The Coast Guard recently changed the rules for lava tour operators to allow them to take visitors as close as 50 meters from shore. But after Monday’s incident boats are required to stay 300 meters out at all times. Kilauea’s latest eruption started in early May and the lava flow has now destroyed more than 700 homes. “What happened today shows the unpredictable nature of a volcano, you just can’t know what’s going to happen,” Olsen said. Even though the vast majority of the Big Island is unaffected by the lava, concerns about the volcano have hurt tourism there. Mystery Substance Washes Ashore On New Jersey Beach

ORTLEY BEACH, N.J. (CBSNewYork) – A U.S. Army Corps of Engineers beach replenishment project on the Jersey Shore dredged up a mysterious substance that left many beachgoers wondering “what is that?” Several parents at Ortley Beach kept their children out of the water Thursday as black sludge appeared to be washing ashore. “You saw all the brown, black coming down the ocean it was disgusting,” Greg Brutofsky told CBS2’s Vanessa Murdock. “As soon as you saw the waves come over, it was just black,” Kim Brutofsky, of East Hanover, added. “We just thought it was wood… Horrible, this whole beach was covered.” “It looked like black coal. But when I went home, my feet were black,” another man added. It turns out, the mystery substance is peat. It’s an organic material that might not look pretty but is not harmful to swim among or walk in, Murdock reported. “The perception is ‘Oh my god, it’s oil or tar or something like that.’ It’s not dangerous, it’s organic, it’s decayed vegetation,” research professor of coastal engineering at Stevens Institute of Technology, Jon Miller explained. He said the Corps is actually dredging up a bit of history. “The peat actually forms where there used to be a wetland or a marsh. So the fact that the material is offshore, it just kind of indicates that a long time ago the shoreline was much farther off shore,” he said. Toms River Township Engineer Robert Chankalian said he initially thought it was coal, too. “We raked it this morning. As you can see, the beach is clean now, and they’re now down into the good sand,” he said. That came as little consolation to grandmother Judy Muschla, of Jackson. “I have my granddaughter here. She likes to play in the sand, and I’m reluctant to let her sit in the sand,” she said.

Junior Lifeguard Steps On Needle In Long Beach

LONG BEACH (CBSLA) — City officials say they will begin raking the sand several times a day after a junior lifeguard stepped on a hypodermic needle in Long Beach. The teenage lifeguard stepped on the needle on June 26, in the area of Ocean Boulevard and 55th Place, according to LBReport.com. The city told the site it has increased raking the sand since then to collect debris. Officials also say they plan to speak to the homeless that regularly camp out on the beach, because they believe that’s where some of the needles may have come from. Extra beach patrols may also be added.

Teaneck Mourns For Members Of Trinidad Family Killed In Delaware Crash

TEANECK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) — Charges had not been filed as of Monday for the tragic car crash that killed five members of a family from New Jersey. What caused a pickup truck driver to cross a center median in Delaware Friday before slamming into the family’s minivan? The Trinidads of Teaneck were as tight as a family could be. The four beautiful sisters were inseparable in life, and tragically so in death. “As a mother, the first thing you do is hug your kids because you don’t want anything like that to ever happen,” said Teaneck resident Paula Millan. The family was headed home from a vacation in Ocean City, Maryland on Friday when a pickup truck travelling in the wrong direction on Route 1 in Delaware collided with their minivan, killing 61-year-old Audi Trinidad and his daughters — Kaitlyn, 20, Danna, 17, and 13-year-old twins Melissa and Allison. Their mother, Mary Rose, was the only one to survive. The pickup hit Brian Kerns’ car right before the Trinidads’. He suffered only minor injuries. “I had gotten out and looked behind me and it sort of looked like a war zone,” said Kerns. “I heard about what happened to the family and I was sitting there in the emergency room and my heart was just pouring out to them.” Friends and loved ones are rallying to support Mary Rose Ballocanag while she recovers and lives with the unthinkable loss. Her daughter Kaitlyn was studying to be a nurse, the twins thrived in the arts, and friends say Danna was an honor student who selflessly helped others in need. “I would be falling behind and struggling and it was kind of obvious,” Danna’s friend, Armando Desequeira, said. “She’d just go, ‘Hey, this is the answer I’ll explain to you’.” Funeral arrangements were still pending as the family awaited the arrival of relatives coming from the Philippines. Meanwhile, grief counselors were being made available at Teaneck High School through Friday.

Seattle, Wash. (CBS Local/AP) — Starbucks says it will eliminate plastic straws from its stores globally by 2020, a nod to the growing push for businesses to be more environmentally friendly. The company will become the largest food and beverage company operating globally to ban plastic straws from all of its stores. The Seattle-based company said Monday it will instead use straws made from other materials, and lids designed not to need straws. McDonald’s also recently said it would switch to paper straws in the United Kingdom and Ireland by next year, and test alternatives to plastic straws in some U.S. locations. Environmental activists have been pressuring businesses to ditch plastic straws because they can end up in the ocean and hurt marine life. The push gained traction after a viral video in 2015 showed rescuers removing a straw from a sea turtle’s nose in graphic detail. Local governments have also been looking at the issue. Last week, Seattle’s ban on single-use plastic straws and utensils in food service outlets took effect, and Starbucks says it already offers alternative straws there. Similar proposals are being considered elsewhere, including New York and San Francisco. Starbucks said Monday that it is making available a strawless lid at 8,000 stores in the U.S. and Canada for certain drinks. Starbucks Coffee Co. estimates the switch will eliminate more than 1 billion plastic straws a year. Starbucks said cold beverages in which a straw is typically included make up 50 percent of the drinks its sells, up from just 37 percent five years ago. While straws have become a high-profile issue, they make up only about 4 percent of the plastic trash by number of pieces, and far less by weight. Straws add up to only about 2,000 tons of the nearly 9 million tons of plastic waste that hits waters a year. Teaneck Father, 4 Daughters Killed By Wrong-Way Driver In Delaware

TOWNSEND, Del. (CBSNewYork/AP) — New Jersey man and his four daughters were killed Friday in a violent multi-vehicle crash on a Delaware highway, according to state police. The crash occurred around 3:45 p.m. on Route 1, the state’s major north-south artery, near Townsend. State Police M. Cpl. Melissa Jaffe said that a southbound pickup truck crossed the median and struck a northbound passenger car. She said the car came to rest on the median, while the pickup truck continued to travel southbound in the northbound lanes and hit a minivan carrying the New Jersey family of six. The two occupants of the pickup truck and the single occupant of the car were taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. A family spokesperson tells CBS Philly the father, 61-year-old man Audie Trinidad, and his daughters Kaitlyn, 20, Danna, 17, Melissa, 13, and Allison, also 13, were all pronounced dead at the scene. The father’s brother and girls’ uncle flew to New Jersey from Miami. “Blink of an eye, lost everything. My brother is a fun-loving family man, he loves his nice family. That’s why they all go out during summer break, he takes his kids out wherever they want to go, and this is what happens,” Danny Trinidad said. He said the family lived in Teaneck for more than 20 years. The father was an usher at the Church of Anastasia, where the family regularly attended services. “Couple tears went down my face. I was actually at work this morning, and I just can’t believe it,” said neighbor Juan Gomez. “Ever since 2006 when I moved over here, we’ve always been friends, always together. So I’ve known them very well.” Gomez said he grew up with the oldest daughter Kaitlyn, who was entering her junior year studying nursing at the College of Mount St. Vincent in the Bronx. “Very loving, her dad was very nice, he would always really care about them,” he added. “They were an amazing family to me and they always were there for me and stuff. Like whenever I cam to their house, they would always provide food for me and stuff,” said friend Laysha Stengeo. “I’m very thankful for them.” “Nice, hardworking, friendly, people you’d want to have as your neighbors, decent people, church-going,” neighbor Leslie Peterson added. The Filipino American Society organized a vigil for the family Saturday night at Votee Park, and a GoFundMe page was set up for the mother. “They are very good kids,” their grandmother said. “It’s OK to look and ask questions where there are no answers,” Mayor Mohammed Hameeduddin told the crowd. “Hug your children, hug your friends, love each other.” “(Danna) was just an amazing young lady. National Honor Society, we just inducted her. She was a amazing young lady. She was a member of the volleyball team, the softball team, very active,” said Teaneck High School Dean of Students Olivia Betances. Delaware State Police said the father, who was driving, and the mother, in the front passenger seat, were wearing their seat belts, but the girls in the back were not. Photographs from the scene showed a blue tarp covering a white passenger vehicle with massive front-end-damage. The vehicle’s roof appeared to have been cut off by rescue workers and was lying upside down on the ground nearby.
