Bronx Produce Market Busy Distributing Food To Supermarkets And Restaurants Ahead Of Thanksgiving

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork ) — With Thanksgiving this Thursday, food markets are going to be very busy this week. That includes a place where many food stores get their food — the giant Hunts Point Terminal Market in the Bronx. But as CBS2’s John Dias reports, the pandemic is changing things up a bit this year. The market is open 24 hours a day, five days a week, but Tuesday is an exceptionally important day to make sure everything runs seamlessly. With more than 30 million pounds of produce out the door, it’s their busiest day of the year. Trucks pick up and deliver fruit and vegetables to New York City supermarkets and restaurants, so New Yorkers can buy their Thanksgiving essentials. Almost everything New Yorkers eat this holiday — except the turkey — will come from this Bronx market. The pandemic has impacted some sales this year. “A lot of people are doing Thanksgiving at home with their families, instead of going out to the restaurants, so we’re definitely seeing more of that,” said Stephanie Katzman, of S. Katzman Produce. “Saw a little bit of a decrease in food service at restaurants. Some restaurants opened up partway, some are still doing delivery business. But we definitely saw a decline of food service and an increase in the retail. “Roll with what you’ve got here, and everyone’s doing the best they can,” she added. “But I think everyone’s looking forward to some of these small family dinners.” The market is the largest wholesale produce market in the world, and items are delivered fresh to 49 states and 55 countries. The incident was the latest in several recent unprovoked subway shoves that have commuters on edge, CBS2’s Christina Fan reported Monday. Speaking with CBS2 exclusively a day later, he said he is relieved to have walked away unscathed after hearing similar attacks on other riders. “It happened all so fast, I think the fear sort of happened after. Looking at those videos and being like, oh, I could have gotten really hurt,” Schoenherr said. Schoenherr said he got off, hoping to switch cars, but the man followed him, blocking him at every turn. In the past week there have been two other similar attacks. On Thursday, a homeless man shoved a woman into the path of an oncoming train . The day before, a man was shoved off the platform at Bryant Park. Mayor Bill de Blasio addressed the unsettling trend on Monday. “The NYPD is going to be increasing its presence in the subways. That will be very visible. We continue to expand our mental health efforts,” de Blasio said. Fan pressed the city for specifics, but was only told officers would be added to high-traffic subway stations. The transit system is for people who are using it to travel. MTA and NYC Transit, our personnel are out there in the system, we are doing our best to make sure the commuters, New Yorkers, are safe,” Feinberg said. “We have a crisis in this city with mentally ill people who need help, and it absolutely needs to be addressed, and I’m desperate for this mayor or the next mayor to take it on because we’ve got a long way to go.” Schoenherr agrees. “I’m hoping the city can approach this issue with empathy and making sure it is treated in a humane way,” he said. Schoenherr said that would mean help instead of jail time for the man who shoved him. Early Tuesday morning, police arrested 33-year-old Michael Medlock in the case. He was charged with attempted assault, reckless endangerment and menacing.

I could travel on Wednesday and by Thursday or Friday I could be contagious, passing it to other people,” said Dr. Ashish Jha, dean of Brown University’s School of Public Health. As CBS2’s Jennifer McLogan reported Monday, Nicoletta Trakosas of Elmont was in one of 3,000 cars outside Nassau Coliseum, hoping to get a box filled with a Thanksgiving turkey and all the fixings. “It’s a really difficult situation with COVID going on, with us not working and what they are doing is wonderful,” she said. It’s my first time, and I’m 61 years old,” she said. Deputies responding to a complaint Saturday night found people drinking, eating at a buffet and having sex at a site in Queens around midnight. Boxes of condoms were provided and three couples were engaged in sex in a small back room, the Sheriff’s Office said. (credit: New York City Sheriff’s Office) Photos from the location show a room with several beds in it, a bar area, and signs by the event host Caligula New York, which advertises itself as the “Hottest Swingers Club in New York.” Organizers were ticketed for violating pandemic rules and selling alcohol without a proper license. A telephone message seeking comment was left at Caligula New York. In Midtown Manhattan, another party was broken up at 2 a.m. Sunday by deputies who found over 120 people dancing, drinking and smoking hookah without masks or social distancing. The organizers, bouncers and a DJ were ticketed. Owner Of BIBA In Williamsburg Says New York State Is Forcing Him Out Of Business As Part Of Park Renovation

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – A Brooklyn business owner who says he contributed to Williamsburg’s resurgence says Gov. Andrew Cuomo is thanking him by kicking him out. His outdoor concessions are part of a park that the state is renovating to honor a civil rights activist. As CBS2’s Lisa Rozner reports, 110 Kent Avenue is the home of BIBA, an event space that thrives off of its backyard patio. A patio that owner Mark Nagawiecki says state parks commissioners dating back to 2006 asked him to consider beautifying so people had a place to eat, drink and use the bathroom at the East River State Park. (Credit: CBS2) “I spent almost $200,000, and I never recapture a big part of that,” Nagawiecki said. Ever since, he’s offered the space to new companies and nonprofits for free or at a reduced price. This year, he got a special permit so Chabad could hold Yom Kippur services there. “As soon as Mark heard what I’m looking for, he said, sure, whatever you need, whenever you need,” said Rabbi Shmuly Lein, of Chabad of North Brooklyn. That’s the same offer Nagawiecki and his business partner, Raffaello Van Couten, made to the state parks department when Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced in August he’d do a multimillion dollar renovation on the park to honor Marsha P. Johnson, an LGBTQ rights activist and transgender woman of color who was part of the Stonewall uprising . “It’s a great thing and we got excited about it,” Van Couten said. He even met with the state parks commissioner, but by email, he was told his concessions had to go by Nov. 16. The commissioner wrote, “It is coming from me and my leadership team, in close coordination with the Executive Chamber.” Rozner reached out to the governor and the state’s Parks commissioner to ask why they can’t work together with the business. No one would go on camera. By email, a Parks spokesperson claimed due to the new direction of the park, “a food and beverage service is no longer compatible” with that section. The Parks Department claims BIBA was notified back in the spring it would have to close down its outdoor space. Only after Rozner asked more questions on the issue, a state representative added that after construction, it would welcome a proposal from BIBA to get a permit. World Kindness Day Marked With Virtual Celebrations, Acts Of Kindness

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Friday is World Kindness Day , and it’s being celebrated across the globe. Many would agree we need it more than ever this year. As CBS2’s Cindy Hsu reports, dancing is how many have celebrated World Kindness Day for nearly 20 years. This year, it’s gone virtual. It is celebrated worldwide on Nov. 13 and promotes the importance of being kind to each other. Karen Salmansohn has written dozens of books on happiness and kindness and says it’s as easy as listening. “Talk less, listen more. Put your phone away. Just a simple act of kindness, just really letting people know that you’re there for them,” she said. Food is another way to get that smile. “You could bake something for somebody, or here in New York, you could order up a delivery and surprise somebody with it,” Salmansohn said. When it comes to kids, we spend so much time making sure they’re behaving, Karen says it’s important to let them know when they’re doing the right thing. “Catch them being kind and to let them know that, wow, that’s great, I love that you just said that right now,” Salmansohn said. It’s also key to be kind to yourself. Take a break and do what makes you happy. Exercise and meditation can help clear your mind. Getting enough sleep is part of self-care. Before bed, making a list of three things you’re grateful about can help you focus on the positive. Kindness is something you can practice everyday. Everyone also loves to be appreciated, so making a habit of saying “thank you” is one of the greatest acts of kindness. Dangerous Long Island Grade Crossing Replaced As Part Of Years-Long Effort To Make LIRR Safer

WESTBURY, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) — A years-long effort to make the Long Island Rail Road safer reached a milestone Friday. One by one, grade crossings are being replaced to save lives. There was celebration as a new underpass replaced a dangerous grade crossing on School Street in Westbury. “We had to have it for the betterment of the community as a whole,” Westbury Deputy Mayor Steve Corte said. A community that’s seen too much death in recent years. Just 19 months ago, the School Street crossing was the scene of mangled metal and lost lives. The impact crushed the platform and injured passengers. “They see the warning signs, they hear the train, they do it anyway,” Corte said. It’s part of the Third Track Improvement Project to reduce congestion and delays and increase railroad capacity. The other three are set to be eliminated by 2022, saving lives and time. “Drivers are no longer to be forced to sit and wait for trains to pass. The gates are down in the peak hour for roughly a third of the time, so you can imagine the back-ups these grade crossings cause,” said Janno Lieber, president of MTA construction and development. RELATED STORY — Ribbon Cutting Marks 1st Of 5 LIRR Grade Crossings Turned Into Underpass It took six months to carve out the road under the tracks, but it has been decades in the making with six fatal crashes along the stretch in 10 years. The project is on time and under budget during the pandemic. “If you do it smart and you follow safety protocols, you can actually take advantage of the fact that there are fewer riders being disrupted,” New York State Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul said. “This will go down in history as something that was extraordinary.” It costs roughly $100 million to replace a single grade crossing with an underpass. Three hundred grade crossings, many of which are arguably as dangerous as School Street, remain with no plans or money to replace them. The MTA’s budget woes are not expected to impact the completion of the grade crossing plan with money already allocated. 2 Killed In Explosion At Veterans Affairs Hospital In West Haven, Conn.

WEST HAVEN, Conn. (CBSNewYork) — At least two people are dead after a steam pipe exploded at a veterans hospital in Connecticut. It happened around 8 a.m. in the basement of a maintenance facility on the hospital’s campus. Investigators say a steam line was being replaced. State emergency management officials are actively working with local and federal officials to respond to the explosion that occurred this morning at the West Haven VA Medical Center and will continue to provide as much aid as necessary to conduct an investigation. It was so difficult.” Sen. Richard Blumenthal released the following statement: “It is sad day in America, as we continue to learn more about the incident at the West Haven VA this morning. Our hearts go out to the families of those individuals who have been impacted. As a member of the Veterans’ Affairs Committee, I’ve been in contact with the director of the facility and will continue to remain in touch as more information becomes available. There must be a full and complete investigation as to what was the cause for this fatal, tragic explosion – our veterans deserve the best care, and the safest and most reliable work, always.” Three other people also had minor injuries.
