WASHINGTON (AP) — Bryce Harper thrilled the home crowd and surely made his father proud, winning the All-Star Home Run Derby on Monday night with an exceptional display of power that carried him past Kyle Schwarber of the Chicago Cubs 19-18. Harper hit the contest-winning blast in extra time, the reward for hitting two homers at least 440 feet during the 4 minutes of regulation. After he connected with the game winner, the Washington Nationals slugger threw his bat in the air and pointed both index fingers toward the sky as a shower of streamers rained upon the crowd of 43,698. The six-time All-Star arranged to have his dad, Ron, pitch to him in the annual contest on the eve of the All-Star Game. Harper responded with a performance that drew the loudest cheers of the night at Nationals Park. Bryce Harper celebrates after winning the T-Mobile Home Run Derby. (Photo by Patrick Smith/Getty Images) It’s been a trying season for Harper, who’s hitting only .214 for the disappointing Nationals. He won a contest that many sluggers avoid, fearful it might wear them out and throw them off. Harper can only hope this helps him get back into the swing. The 2015 NL MVP beat Freddie Freeman of the Atlanta Braves and Max Muncy of the Dodgers before trumping the fifth-seeded Schwarber, who put the pressure on with a solid outing before Harper stepped to the plate. Wearing a headband that resembled the District of Columbia flag and displaying a right sleeve with stars and stripes, Harper trailed 18-9 with 1:20 left before rallying. He homered on nine of his last 10 swings before entering extra time. Hours before the session, Harper spoke excitedly about having his dad pitch to him in the contest. The 25-year-old said his father “worked his tail off every single day to provide for me and my family” and “now being able to have him throw to me in a big league ballpark is the cherry on top.” Harper advanced to the final with an astonishing spree of long-ball hitting. He trailed Max Muncy of the Dodgers 12-4 with 2:20 left, then peeled off six homers in 47 seconds before calling a timeout. Harper returned to hit three more home runs in 22 seconds, the last of them inside the right-field foul pole. The semifinal matchup between Schwarber and Philadelphia’s Rhys Hoskins was a thriller. After stunning top-seed Jesus Aguilar of Milwaukee in the opening round, the eighth-seeded Hoskins ripped 20 long balls to put the pressure on Schwarber. Using a late surge, Schwarber pulled one ball after another over the right field wall to squeeze out a 21-20 victory — by far the highest-scoring matchup of the night. The fans dutifully cheered most home runs during the first round, but they saved their loudest cheers for Harper, the last player to step to the plate. After Freeman hit 12 home runs over the 4-minute span, Harper unleashed six shots of at least 440 feet and secured the victory with a drive to center long before the clock expired. As the ball cleared the wall, the left-handed hitting Harper walked out of the batter’s box and thrust both arms in the air. Freeman was the oldest player in the field at 28, and the first Braves participant since Andruw Jones in 2005. Milwaukee’s Aguilar, the NL home run leader at the break, was eliminated in the opening round by Hoskins 17-12. Aguilar hit too many balls to straightaway center, where the wall stands over 400 feet from the plate. Hoskins pumped most of his drives into the left-field seats, where it’s 336 feet down the line. The most thrilling first-round match featured a near buzzer-beater by Houston’s Alex Bregman, who fell to Schwarber 16-15. The difference was the pair of homers that Schwarber hit during 30 seconds of extra time, the reward for hitting two long balls of at least 440 feet. Bregman — the lone AL representative — appeared defeated with a minute left, but he mounted a late surge and lost when his final swing produced a drive that landed at the base of the center-field wall. Muncy advanced by defeating No. 6 seed Javier Baez of the Cubs, 16-15. Baez hit the longest shot of the Derby, a 479-footer. (© Copyright 2018 The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved. LOS ANGELES (CBSNewYork/AP) – The 70th Emmy Award nominations were announced Thursday morning, with “Game of Thrones” earning 22 Emmy Award nominations, including for best drama series, to lead the pack. HBO’s fantasy saga is a two-time best drama winner that sat out the last year’s awards. It’s returning to face formidable competition: “The Handmaid’s Tale,” the dystopian sci-fi series that claimed top drama honors last year, drew 20 bids, with “Westworld” close by with 21. Donald Glover’s “Atlanta” is the top comedy with 16 bids. It will face newcomers including “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” and “Barry,” starring Bill Hader. The revival of “Roseanne,” canceled because of star Roseanne Barr’s racist tweet, drew only one major nomination, a supporting actress nod for Laurie Metcalf. The previous high for “Game of Thrones” was 24 nominations in 2015. It got 23 nods in 2016 but wasn’t eligible last year. Samira Wiley of “The Handmaid’s Tale” and “Orange Is the New Black” and Ryan Eggold of “The Blacklist” fame made the announcements on Thursday morning. ‘Game Of Thrones’ Leads With 22 Emmy Award Nominations
Watch the nominations LIVE in the player above NORTH HOLLYWOOD (CBSLA) – Nominations for the 70th annual Primetime Emmy Awards will be announced Thursday, with “Game of Thrones” returning to contention after a year’s absence. The HBO fantasy drama won for outstanding drama series in 2015 and 2016 but wasn’t eligible for the 2017 award because its only new episodes airing during the eligibility period were part of the body of work considered for its 2016 victory. Hulu’s “The Handmaid’s Tale,” the 2017 outstanding drama series Emmy winner, is seeking its second nomination in its two seasons, as are Netflix’s “The Crown” and “Stranger Things”; NBC’s “This Is Us” and HBO’s “Westworld.” “This Is Us” last year became the first nominee in the category from the four major broadcast networks since CBS’ “The Good Wife” in 2011. “The Good Wife” is the most recent series from a major broadcast network to receive back-to-back nominations in the category. A series from the major broadcast networks has not won for outstanding drama series since Fox’s “24” in 2006. Another contender for a nomination is the FX period spy drama “The Americans,” which was nominated in the category in 2016. HBO’s “Veep,” the winner for outstanding comedy series the past three seasons, won’t be among this year’s nominees after the 2017 announcement that it would delay its final season until 2019 to allow star Julia Louis- Dreyfus enough time to recuperate after undergoing chemotherapy treatment for breast cancer. Last year’s nominees who are contenders for nominations this year include FX’s “Atlanta,” ABC’s “black-ish”; HBO’s “Silicon Valley”; and Netflix’s “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.” ABC’s “Modern Family” is seeking its ninth nomination in its nine seasons. It was the winner in the category for five consecutive seasons, tying the record set by NBC’s “Frasier” from 1994-98. First-season series that are contenders for nominations include Netflix’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” the Golden Globe winner for television’s best comedy or musical series, and “GLOW” and HBO’s “Barry.” CBS’ “The Amazing Race” is expected to again be among the nominees for outstanding reality-competition program. It has been nominated each of the preceding 16 years the category has been in existence. It won each of the first seven years, and again in 2011, 2012 and 2014. Last year’s other nominees were NBC’s “The Voice” and Bravo’s “Top Chef,” the only other winners; NBC’s “American Ninja Warrior”; Lifetime’s “Project Runway”; and VH1’s “RuPaul’s Drag Race.” The biggest rule changes this year are the restructuring of the outstanding variety special and special class categories and the expansion of several existing Emmy categories into two new and distinct categories, including those involving costuming, nonfiction programming and sound editing. The confusion of defining special class prompted the Television Academy to have separate categories for outstanding live variety special and outstanding pre-recorded variety special. Samira Wiley from “The Handmaid’s Tale” and Ryan Eggold, who stars in the new NBC medical drama “New Amsterdam,” will join Television Academy Chairman and CEO Hayma Washington and President and COO Maury McIntyre in announcing the nominees in the top categories at the Television Academy’s North Hollywood headquarters. The 70th annual Primetime Emmy Awards, which honor programming initially airing between 6 p.m. and 2 a.m. from June 1, 2017, to May 31, 2018, will be presented Sept. 17 at the Microsoft Theater. Colin Jost and Michael Che, anchors of the “Weekend Update” segment on “Saturday Night Live” and co-head writers of NBC’s late-night sketch comedy series, will be the hosts. The NBC Emmys telecast will be executive produced by “Saturday Night Live” creator and executive producer Lorne Michaels and include what the network is describing as “special appearances from additional `Saturday Night Live’ cast members.” The bulk of the awards from the Primetime Emmys’ 122 categories will be presented at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards Sept. 8-9, also at the Microsoft Theater. NEW YORK (AP) — Enyel De Los Santos won his major league debut and the Philadelphia Phillies got home runs from Maikel Franco and Odubel Herrera in a 7-3 victory over the New York Mets on Tuesday night. Franco drove in four runs as the Phillies, who began the day tied with Atlanta atop the NL East, won for the 10th time in 13 games. Nick Williams had three hits and two RBIs, and Rhys Hoskins also got three hits. De Los Santos allowed three runs and five hits over 6 1/3 effective innings. The 22-year-old right-hander was called up from Triple-A Lehigh Valley, where he was 9-3 with a 1.89 ERA in 16 starts, and matched against another starter making his big league debut in Drew Gagnon of the Mets. Staked to an early lead and armed with an unorthodox and deceptive slingshot delivery that Philadelphia manager Gabe Kapler dubbed a “crossfire,” De Los Santos (1-0) cruised for most of the night against a scuffling Mets lineup that has managed only eight runs over its last five games. De Los Santos walked three and struck out six. He threw 94 pitches, 58 for strikes. Acquired from San Diego in December for shortstop Freddy Galvis, De Los Santos was scheduled to pitch for the International League in the Triple-A All-Star Game on Wednesday before getting called up. He also was chosen to play for the World Team in Sunday’s All-Star Futures Game. It was the first time a Phillies starter made his debut against another starter in his first outing since Sept. 25, 1944, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. Back then, Charlie Ripple faced Charlie Gassaway of the Chicago Cubs at Shibe Park. Amed Rosario had three hits for the Mets, including two triples to left field. New York has dropped 19 of its last 23 home games. Franco put the Phillies ahead with a three-run homer off Gagnon (0-1) in the second. The third baseman is batting .440 with two homers and seven RBIs over his last eight games. He added an RBI single in the sixth and made several nifty plays on hard-hit grounders. Williams lined a two-run single in the third. Herrera clubbed a solo shot into the Phillies’ bullpen in the fifth for his career-high 16th home run. The 28-year-old Gagnon was charged with six runs and seven hits in 4 2/3 innings. He also hit two batters with pitches. At the plate, Gagnon drove in Rosario with a sacrifice fly — giving his family in attendance something to cheer about. TRAINER’S ROOM Phillies: Hoskins crashed violently with his face into the padded left-field wall while chasing Rosario’s triple in the third. Hoskins, who broke his jaw in late May when he fouled a ball off his mouth, remained in the game after being checked by Kapler and a trainer. Mets: Slumping OF Michael Conforto was rested until entering as a pinch-hitter in the seventh. He began the night batting .186 since June 1. … RHP Noah Syndergaard plans to throw a bullpen Wednesday. If all goes well, he will start Friday night against Washington. Syndergaard has been sidelined since late May with a strained ligament in his right index finger. … LHP Jason Vargas (strained right calf) threw only 64 pitches over six shutout innings in a rehab outing Monday for Class A Brooklyn. “We’d like to get him built up a little bit more so we’re going to obviously talk to him today,” manager Mickey Callaway said. “Try to figure out if he needs more rehab outings or if he’s available to pitch for us.” … RF Jay Bruce felt discomfort in his hip when he began baseball activity. He has been shut down for a 10-day period that started Sunday, according to Callaway. After that, Bruce’s condition will be reassessed. UP NEXT Phillies: Recovering from a bruised forearm, RHP Vince Velasquez (5-8, 4.69 ERA) is expected to return from the 10-day disabled list to start Wednesday night’s series finale. Velasquez was hit just below the right elbow by a line drive on June 30. He retrieved the ball and threw it left-handed to first base to get the out, falling to the ground in pain immediately afterward. Mets: All-Star RHP Jacob deGrom (5-4, 1.79 ERA) tied a season high with eight innings of one-run ball against Tampa Bay last Friday. He leads the majors in ERA. TOKYO, Japan (CBS News) — In a face-to-face visit with hopes of putting meat on the bones after the historic summit between President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo spent two days in North Korea this week negotiating with counterparts . In a first, he even spent a night in a guesthouse belonging to the regime in Pyongyang, North Korea’s capital. But late Saturday , North Korea’s Foreign Ministry called talks with Pompeo “regrettable.” A statement by an unnamed North Korean Foreign Ministry spokesman said the U.S. betrayed the spirit of the summit by making unilateral demands on the complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization of the country, The Associated Press reported. The spokesman characterized demands by the U.S. that were “gangster-like,” and described the talks as “very concerning” because they had led to a “dangerous phase that might rattle our willingness for denuclearization that had been firm.” The statement from North Korea did not, however, take direct aim at Mr. Trump. “We still cherish our good faith in President Trump,” it wrote. Experts say this indicates that the regime is not completely backing away from negotiations, but giving itself breathing room at the negotiating levels. Yet the language also raises questions about what the countries actually agreed to during the Singapore Summit. Earlier on Saturday, Pompeo had been more positive. “I think we made progress in every element of our discussions,” Pompeo told reporters after he was asked if a timeline was set for denuclearization and if there was an agreement for the regime’s destruction of its nuclear program. The trip was Pompeo’s third to North Korea this year. For the first time, he did not meet with leader Kim Jong Un while visiting the country. Pompeo, who was carrying out the first meeting between the U.S. and North Korea since Mr. Trump met with Kim Jong Un in Singapore last month, would not reveal any details on the progress he said was made. He didn’t cite any major breakthroughs. Ahead of the visit, the State Department did not make promises about what Pompeo might walk away with. After the meetings, Pompeo admitted that certain areas of U.S.-North Korea negotiations still have a long way to go. “These are complicated issues, but we made progress on almost all of the central issues,” Pompeo said. “Some places a great deal of progress. Other place(s) there’s still more work to be done.” State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert said there was never an expectation that Pompeo would meet with Kim, although other U.S. government officials previously indicated that was the plan. Pompeo never definitively said he would not meet with Kim. Pompeo went to Pyongyang with a letter for Kim Jong Un from Mr. Trump. The last time the two leaders exchanged letters was in early June when Kim Yong Chol — the country’s former spy chief and now the vice chairman of the Workers’ Party Central Committee — brought a letter to the White House for Mr. Trump on behalf of the leader. Kim Yong Chol delivered that letter by hand and met with Mr. Trump for about two hours. Pompeo pointed to an incremental development in North Korea’s commitment to return the remains of missing American soldiers . Department of Defense officials will meet with North Korean counterparts on July 12 to discuss the return of the remains. The conversations are based on a commitment that Kim Jong Un made last month during the Singapore summit. Last month Mr. Trump incorrectly stated that the remains were already sent to the United States. Before Pompeo’s visit, U.S. officials had named the missile test engine site that the North Koreans agreed to destroy — a commitment that was also made at the Singapore summit. Pompeo spoke with his counterparts about this commitment, but details were lacking. Pompeo did not say there was an agreement to monitor that destruction or if there would be any kind of technical verification that the destruction actually happened. Before Pompeo and Kim Yong Chol dove into Saturday’s long day of negotiations, Kim Yong Chol made some snarky comments as he sat with Pompeo in front of cameras. “Thinking about those discussions you might have not slept well last night,” he said to Pompeo, referencing their close to three-hour meal the night before during which they discussed “very important matters.” Pompeo told the North Korean negotiator that he “slept just fine.” Neither side revealed any details about the evening’s conversation. Pompeo and Kim Yong Chol indicated that a significant distance remains between the two sides in terms of expectations and demands. They both said they had things to “clarify.” Pompeo, who is now in Tokyo, is expected to meet with Japanese and South Korean counterparts to brief them on his visit. — Kylie Atwood (© 2018 CBS Interactive Inc.
