HELSINKI (CBSNewYork) — President Donald Trump is in Finland, where he’s preparing for his one-on-one meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Ahead of the meeting Monday, Trump met with the president of Finland. When asked bout the upcoming sit-down with Putin, Trump did not offer any details. “We’ll do just fine, thank you,” Trump said. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) July 16, 2018 Trump referring to Special Council Robert Mueller indicting 12 Russian military officers last week for allegedly interfering with the 2016 presidential election. Putin has denied being involved. “I find it hard to believe, but that’s what one of the purposes of this meeting is, so the president can see eye-to-eye with President Putin and ask him about it,” said National Security Adviser John Bolton. Trump told CBS Evening News anchor Jeff Glor that he has low expectations for the summit. “I go into a meeting like that never with high expectations, but maybe some really good stuff can happen,” he said. “I wanna do great for our country and I’m sure he wants to do well for his.” The president is meeting first alone with Putin and translators. After, there will be an expanded meeting with the president will be joined by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Bolton and Chief of Staff John Kelly. The Senate’s number two Republican, Sen. John Cornyn, is warning the president to be wary of Putin. “Putin is an autocrat. He’s a thug. He does not respect the rule of law,” he said. “Obviously, he doesn’t respect our democracy.” Trump and Putin have met briefly at other events, but this will be the first time the two will have extended talks.

Woman survives a week after driving off California cliff
SAN GABRIEL (CBSLA) — A man and a woman were shot Sunday in an unincorporated area of San Gabriel and the man who allegedly shot the pair was arrested, a sheriff’s lieutenant said. It happened just before 2 p.m. in a home on the 6300 block of Muscatel Avenue in a residential neighborhood, sheriff’s Lt. Marsha Williams said. The shooter has been identified as 80-year-old Adrian Ness. The victims have been identified as his wife and son. Ness was taken into custody at the Sheriff’s Temple station and booked on two attempted murder charges. He is being held on $2 million. The suspect’s wife is also believed to be in her 80s. The son’s age was not revealed but both victims were said to be in critical condition following surgery. The shooting reportedly happened during a domestic violence situation. KCAL9’s Crystal Cruz reported from the scene and said the exact cause of the shooting is unknown. But one neighbor told her off-camera that the father and son were “having problems.”

CVS apologizes after white manager calls cops on black customer
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – A 16-year-old boy was shot to death Sunday in Brooklyn. It happened shortly before 5 p.m. near Blake Avenue and Pine Street in East New York. Witnesses told CBS2’s Natalie Duddridge it started with some kind of dispute. They said the victim went into a deli, came out, and then someone pulled a gun and shot him in the back. He ran across the street where he collapsed. Some of his friends said he went by “Richie” and just celebrated his birthday Saturday. They said he was a funny guy who worked a lot of odd jobs, like doing yardwork, to help his mom and siblings. He may have been doing a cleaning job before he was shot, Duddridge reported. “The reason that he was working so hard was to take care of his family,” friend Decory Peele said. “He would like clean up, walk dogs. He just did anything anybody asked him.” “Total disbelief about what happened, about our friend,” said friend Amario Walcott. “I heard a police commotion, I heard the ambulance. So I walked down to see what was going on,” a neighbor said. “It’s alarming, especially for this neighborhood. I know it’s the 75 th Precinct and I know crime is high, especially in East New York.” Police said the shooter took off running toward the Cypress Hills houses. He was last seen wearing a red shirt and gray sweatpants.
