NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Billboards boasting the effectiveness of quick weight loss supplements may not be the only thing creating a problem for teens. Parents trying to help their overweight teenager lose weight may also be doing more harm than good. A new study finds that parents putting their children on a diet could lead to struggles with their weight as adults. The study, in the journal Pediatrics, of more than 500 teens who had been encouraged to diet, found that approach led to problems with food later. “They followed teenagers who had been encouraged to diet, 15 years later and found that they were more likely to be overweight, to be dieting, binge-eating, and have lower body satisfaction,” Dr. Susan Albers from the Cleveland Clinic said. Those teens were later also more likely to encourage their own children to diet. According to Dr. Albers, dieting among teens can encourage a negative relationship with food. She says it’s more beneficial to practice mindful eating – where the focus is on how you eat, rather than what you eat. “It’s so important to give teens these skills at this juncture in their life and I talk to parents about tools, not rules,” Dr. Albers added.

Parents Getting Teens To Diet Doing More Harm Than Good, Study Says
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — You’ll soon need a new ID if you want to travel. In two years, a regular drivers license just wont cut it. If you take to the skies or travel the high seas after October 2020 you’ll need a suped up drivers license, called a Real ID, to travel if you don’t want to use a passport. “A fake drivers license is probably one of the easier things to obtain,” Robert Sinclair Jr. from AAA Northeast said. “With this extra level of scrutiny and examination, it’ll help to keep us safer.” The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles started a campaign to get people switched, saying the deadline is closer than many think. A free version of the new license will let you board a domestic flight. For an extra $30, an enhanced version can also be used in lieu of a passport to board a cruise ship or cross the border into Mexico and Canada. The DMV is passing out flyers to let people know the rules of the new program. For most, the sticking point is they’ll have to go in person to get the new license. The concept was born out of a recommendation after the 9/11 terror attacks. Nationwide security standards were established for what information was required to be attached to a drivers license. The IDs will also be needed to get into federal buildings and military bases. “It’s an attempt to make sure all states are taking as many security measures as they can,” DMV Executive Deputy Commissioner Theresa Egan said. Despite the Mets’ being on pace for 95 losses and a last-place finish (yes, they’re behind the Marlins in the standings) deGrom has positioned himself as an NL Cy Young contender. In his age-30 season, the All-Star deGrom has pitched to an MLB -best 1.68 ERA with a 4.97 K/BB ratio after 19 starts. For his career, he owns a sparkling 140 ERA+ across parts of five big-league seasons. Yes, deGrom has had injury concerns in the past, but it’s all come together this season. His excellence in tandem with the Mets’ awfulness has led to speculation and even reportage that he’ll be traded prior to the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline. As well, deGrom isn’t eligible for free agency until after the 2020 season, which only adds to his appeal on the market. The Mets themselves have sent mixed signals on this matter, especially since GM Sandy Alderson took a leave of absence to focus on his health. As for deGrom and his representatives, they sound like they’d like the Mets to make a choice. MORRISTOWN, N.J. (CBSNewYork) — New Jersey is considering an expansion of the state’s medical marijuana program to include opioid addiction as a qualifying condition, but some experts have voiced concern. More than 22,000 people in New Jersey died of drug overdoses in 2016. While the cure for opioid addiction remains a mystery, NJ Department of Health Commissioner Shereef Elnahal says he’s exploring the idea of making medical marijuana a potential treatment for the state and nationwide scourge. “Right now the consideration is adding it as an addition to what’s called medication-assisted treatment, that is the evidence-based treatment people get for addiction,” he said. “When they’re addicted it actually helps them get off and get into recovery.” Right now, patients dealing with opioid use disorder can only access medical marijuana if their addiction was rooted in treatment for chronic pain. The commissioner says medical marijuana also gives doctors another option when first prescribing for pain. “It reduces the reliance physicians have on opioids to treat pain,” Elnahal said. “Marijuana is an effective treatment for pain.” Psychologist and addiction expert Dr. Harris Stratyner says there’s insufficient evidence that the use of marijuana will stop someone from using heroin or other opioids. “There’s just not enough scientific research out there to show it’s effective,” Stratyner says. “It may be dangerous and trigger opioid addiction if that’s your drug of choice.” Elnahal knows it’s an ambitious plan. “What we want to do is set up studies that actually investigate if it can be independently used as yet another tool getting people out of addiction,” Elnahal said. Stratyner points out that many people who use drugs have psychiatric disorders and are self-medicating with either opioids or stimulants, and he fears using marijuana could cloud the picture. In March, the DOH added five qualifying conditions for medical marijuana including anxiety, migraines, and chronic pains. The program has added 10,000 patients since the start of Governor Phil Murphy’s term in January, bringing total enrollment to over 25,000 people.

TOWN OF ISLIP, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) – With temperatures reaching the high 80s Monday, some Long Island residents are demanding to know why their community pool is still closed after five years of waiting. The Town of Islip shuttered Roberto Clemente Park’s Olympic-sized pool amid budget cuts in 2013. Then as it was set to reopen, tons of polluted debris dumped at the site forced the entire park’s closure. The park has finally reopened, but still no pool despite a scheduled summer 2018 completion date. “You said 2018 it is now July 16,” community advocate Nelsena A. Day said to CBS2’s Carolyn Gusoff. The community advocate and local residents say the town seems to have no sense of urgency to reopen the pool. “Just a few people, Some in the car sleeping. They’re just taking their time,” Brentwood resident Royetta Alston observed. A town spokesperson claims crews are working around the clock, but have been faced with a “Pandora’s Box” including pool walls that needed to be rebuilt and weather delays in March and April. “What kind of weather? We didn’t have 12 feet of snow… so what are they talking about?” Nelsena Day countered. Town officials say they believe they are now in the home stretch, but have not said if 2018 means anytime this summer when the pool is needed most.

ORLANDO (CBSLA) — A woman’s attempt to document her trip to the top of a record-breaking amusement park ride took a dramatic turn when she dropped her still-recording iPhone 450 feet to the ground – and it survived the drop! Cansel Yıldırım told News 6 Orlando that she had planned to record herself and her date June 11 as they reached the top of the StarFlyer, which has been promoted by its owner as the tallest swing ride in the world. The video shows Yıldırım holding the phone as she and her passenger ascend to the top of the ride, but the footage is interrupted when she suddenly loses her grip. The phone spins through the air as it drops hundreds of feet, then lands screen-side down with its camera in the air – recording the entire time. Yıldırım told the station that she assumed the phone’s screen would be shattered, if the phone itself hadn’t broken into pieces on impact, especially since she didn’t have a case protecting it. Yet she says she was able to use the Find My iPhone app to locate the still-functioning phone, and when she picked it up, it had only a single scratch! She was able to upload the video on social media, where it’s received thousands of views. News 6 reports that phones and other personal items are not allowed on the StarFlyer, and that riders are asked to stow their belongings in plastic bins at the base of the ride before strapping in.
