LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) – Sanitation worker Adrian Corrales – who normally drives a small garbage truck on a day shift – was charged with DUI after crashing a truck on the freeway at 3 a.m. City officials say his normal hours are 6 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. When CBS2’s David Goldstein asked if he had permission to take the truck, Corrales wouldn’t answer. Taxpayers will have to foot the bill for the crash – about $28,000. A Goldstein investigation last year found some employees are driving rentals for their own use – like Francisco Pena, who officials say no longer works for the city. In Corrales’ case, the accident happened on the 5 Freeway in April when he allegedly flipped the truck and slammed into safety barrels on the side of the road. Court records show he had a BAC above .15 percent, almost twice the legal limit. Corrales is in court next month to enter a plea. But it’s not his first DUI: he was also charged with driving under the influence of alcohol within 10 years of another DUI offense, in 2012 before he worked for the city. The latest one occurred three months ago, but Goldstein reports Corrales was spotted last week wearing his city sanitation uniform. “How is it that you’re still working in sanitation?” Goldstein asked him. When he wouldn’t answer any questions, Goldstein tried a sanitation official. Sanitation CFO Lisa Mowery confirmed he’s still driving trucks, but wouldn’t say whether he had permission to borrow the now-destroyed truck overnight. Mowery did confirm the department is looking into the matter. As for Corrales’ history of DUIs? “Our employees have due process,” said Mowery. But political watchdog Jack Humpreville says Corrales continuing to work could lead to a lawsuit if he gets in another crash – one that could cost the city and taxpayers millions of dollars. “He oughta be fired, period, end of sentence,” said Humphreville. “All you need to do is have some guy drive the city trucks when he’s schonked and getting into an accident and really hurting somebody, and you know that’s gonna be a big ticket.”

Goldstein Investigation: Sanitation Worker Who Crashed Truck In DUI Still On The Job
WHITTIER (CBSLA) — As the debate about immigration into the United States rages, one Southland chef is lending his voice to those who have come into this country for a better life, just as he did. Katsuji Tanabe is best known for his stint on Bravo’s cooking competition “Top Chef.” He now runs six acclaimed restaurants across the country, including the Mexican-Jewish fusion eatery MexiKosher. At The Nixon Chops and Whiskey in Whittier, he’s using his name to shout out his immigrant staff on the upscale steak house’s receipts. At the bottom of each one, it says, “Immigrants cooked your food and served you today,” ending the message with the hashtag #ITookARisk. “This isn’t about politics; I don’t know anything about politics,” the chef told CBS2 News Wednesday. “Tacos, I’m all over it, but it’s a conversation.” Tanabe, the son of a Japanese father and a Mexican mother, was born and raised in Mexico. “Being an immigrant — I don’t think it’s a bad thing,” said Tanabe, who added he’s not afraid of any backlash his stance could generate. “I came to this country with nothing. I have, now, everything.” “It’s not about being upset, it’s not about being angry, it’s about making a change and [making] people think, ‘You know what? We’re better than this,’” Tanabe said. Patrons at Nixon Wednesday seemed to agree with the sentiment. “I think that’s what the great thing about America is, we are all immigrants except the Native Americans who were originally here, and I think that’s beautiful,” said diner Christina Thai. Tanabe hopes his gesture will resonate as the debate over immigration continues. “Face-to-face makes a huge difference. When you are on social media and you are talking to other people, you feel protected,” said Tanabe. “But in life, it’s a whole different story.”

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — It’s peak rental season in New York City, but lots of living options comes with lots of problems especially if you don’t do your homework. Sabin Wizman thought her one bedroom with a view of the East River and modern finishing was a steal. With assurances from her realtor she negotiated the building down to $4,000 a month. When she moved in in May, she ran into a rude awakening. “As you open your windows you have East Side Heliport that runs 12 hours a day from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., at times up to four helicopters,” Wizman said. “I was told by the management here that they’re not required to let me know that there’s a helipad.” She says the building told her it was her job to investigate before hand, and if she wanted to get out she’d have to pay for two months after she moved out. Real estate attorney Adam Leitman Bailey says the leasing company is well within their rights. “Landlords aren’t required to tell you anything,” he told CBS2. “I recommend to clients before signing lease that they stand in front of the door for a half-hour, greeting other tenants and asking them how they like the building.” Environment is only one of the many things to consider, and Leitman Bailey says legally it’s on you to do the homework. By law, a building does have to disclose whether there were bed bugs in the apartment but only in the last year. The Department of Housing Preservation and Development has a free database that discloses complaints and violations like leaks, bed bugs, and heating problems. The Department of Buildings has a database that lets you know about construction planned in the area and elevator issues. “Go during work hours, after work hours, morning, evening, and the weekends,” real estate broker Anthony Lolli said. “You really want to cover the full gamut.” “There’s situations where people move into buildings they don’t know, there’s a homeless shelter down the block, and maybe a lot of people coming in and out,” real estate broker Carlos Angelucci said. Otherwise, you could be out of luck. Experts say it’s currently a renter’s market, so take time before you sign. There’s always another apartment around the corner.

WASHINGTON (CBSNewYork) – President Trump again expressed confidence in U.S. intelligence agencies and their assessment of Russian interference Wednesday, but declined to say whether he believes Vladimir Putin was lying when he denied Russia was behind the meddling effort. Mr. Trump made the comments in an interview with “ CBS Evening News ” anchor Jeff Glor at the White House. Mr. Trump said he believes it’s “true” Russia meddled in the 2016 election and said he directly warned Putin against interfering in U.S. elections during their one-on-one meeting in Helsinki, Finland, on Monday. Asked what he said to Putin, Mr. Trump responded, “Very strong on the fact that we can’t have meddling, we can’t have any of that … I let him know that we can’t have this, we’re not going to have it, and that’s the way it’s going to be.” More From CBS News Mr. Trump also expressed confidence in Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats, whose dire warnings about U.S. hacking vulnerabilities he had questioned in a previous interview. “Well, I accept. It better not be.” There was more Russia summit backlash Wednesday at the White House over a response President Donald Trump gave to a reporter after a Cabinet meeting. The reporter asked if Russia was still targeting the United States with cyberattacks, in light of comments by Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats that it was. Trump answered, “no,” seeming to contradict his national intelligence director. However, the White House said the president was merely declining to answer questions. Reporter: “Is Russia still targeting the U.S.? Is Russia still targeting the U.S., Mr. President?” POTUS: “Thank you very much, thank you very much, no.” Trump said “no,” but the White House said he was only saying “no” to more questions from reporters. “I had a chance to speak with the president after his comments, and the president said, ‘thank you very much’ and was saying ‘no’ to answering questions,” White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said Wednesday. “The president and his administration are working very hard to make sure that Russia is unable to meddle in our elections.” Just last week Coats said the U.S. is still subject to a large-scale cyberattack . “These actions are persistent, they are pervasive and they are meant to undermine America’s democracy on a daily basis,” he said on July 13. But in the interview with CBS Evening News’ Glor , the president seemed unconvinced that, as Coats put it, the warning lights are blinking red. “Well I don’t know if I agree with that. I’d have to look, but I have a lot of respect for Dan and that’s where he is and that’s what he does. Again, we’re working on it very hard, we’re upgrading things at a very rapid pace,” Trump said. This is the second time this week there has been confusion over what the president meant to say regarding Russia. On Tuesday, he said he misspoke while saying there was no reason for the country to meddle in U.S. elections. “The sentence should have been: I don’t see any reason why it wouldn’t be Russia,” he said. At his Cabinet meeting Wednesday, Trump once again insisted he’s been tougher on Russia than any other president. “I think President Putin knows that better than anybody, certainly a lot better than the media. He understands it and he’s not happy about it, and he shouldn’t be happy about it,” he said. Meanwhile, Senate Democrats want to hold a hearing with the U.S. interpreter who was in the room during their private meeting at the summit . “President Trump wanted no one else in the room. So to have the translator come testify and tell what happened there is an imperative,” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said. “I think that would be a terrible precedent to be pulling translators for meetings that presidents had,” said Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is scheduled to testify next week on what he may have learned about the meeting after it was over. When asked about sitting for an interview with Special Counsel Robert Mueller, the president said his lawyers are working on that and he always wanted to do an interview.

Stranger joins elderly widower to celebrate birthday of his late wife
BOYLE HEIGHTS (CBSLA) — Residents of a rapidly gentrifying enclave of Los Angeles tried to shut down the grand opening of a new coffee shop, saying the owner’s support of President Donald Trump’s stance on immigrants is reason alone to want him out of the neighborhood. On Thursday, protesters held signs and screamed at patrons in front of Asher Caffe & Lounge located at 945 S. Boyle Ave. in Boyle Heights, a traditionally Jewish neighborhood that is now predominately Latino. They say they oppose the cafe and the owner over his support of Trump’s immigration policies. “So what’s the connection? This is what I don’t understand. I’m confused — the connection between Donald Trump and good coffee,” Israeli-born businessman Asher Shalom told CBS2 News. The kosher cafe was set to have a grand opening on July 12, the day anti-gentrification activists were met by Los Angeles Police officers blocking the entrance. According to Eater LA , about 30 protesters associated with the group Defend Boyle Heights (DBH) showed up to speak up against Shalom, who they called “an anti-immigrant trump loving gentryfier” in a Facebook post. “They really intensely protested and accosted all the visitors that came to our grand opening event,” said son David. “It was very scary,” said Shalom’s daughter Yael. “There was a lot of people protesting outside wearing masks […] and they threw a significant amount of feces at our windows.” DBH was accused of using similarly aggressive tactics against another coffeeshop in the area last year and against an art gallery nearby that eventually shuttered. DBH showed a screenshot of a retweet of one of Trump’s messages about his proposed Muslim ban by Asher Fabrics Concept, one of Shalom’s other companies. Shalom told CBS2 he came to the United States 30 years ago and is now a U.S. citizen. Shalom showed CBS2 two proclamations honoring him from L.A. City Councilman Jose Huizar and County Supervisor Hilda Solis, both who represent Boyle Heights. Shalom said his businesses employ dozens of people, including immigrants. The Boyle Heights Chamber of Commerce, which had invited Shalom to join and was slated to attend the grand opening, terminated his membership days before the confrontation. In a letter from chamber president Jennifer Lahoda, she mentions a photo shared by Shalom on his Facebook page reading, “I wish Democrats would fight as hard for Americans, as they do for illegals.” Lahoda said the views expressed “are not in line with the values and objectives of the Boyle Heights Chamber of Commerce.” “Boyle Heights thrives because of our diverse immigrant population — The Chamber will always celebrate and support this fact. We will not support anyone who chooses to conduct themselves in a hateful manner, especially toward members of our community.” Shalom denies he is anti-immigrant or hateful, telling CBS2, “My name is ‘Shalom,’ and I love peace.” Despite the controversy, Asher Caffe was busy Wednesday with people who support Shalom and his right to his political opinions. “I don’t think politics should get in the way of good food,” said one woman. “I support him, in that I will come and give him my business,” another patron said. Neither DBH nor the chamber of commerce wished to give their remarks on camera.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Police on Wednesday arrested a man they say shot and killed a teenager in Bushwick, Brooklyn. 19-year-old Elijah Harris, of Brooklyn, was taken into custody and charged with the Tuesday murder of 15-year-old Kyon Jackson. A woman who lives nearby captured the scene with her cell phone. A 42-year-old innocent bystander was also grazed in the cheek by a bullet in the shooting investigators believe may have been gang-related. ASPEN, Colo. (CBSNewYork/AP) — FBI Director Christopher Wray says Russian President Vladimir Putin has one version of what happened during the 2016 presidential election, but he’s got his own. Wray said Wednesday at the Aspen Security Forum in Colorado that his view has not changed and he stands behind the intelligence agencies’ assessment that Moscow meddled in the election. And he says Russia continues malign activities to sow discord in America. He says Russia continues through fake news and propaganda to “spin up” Americans on either side of hot-button issues. He also dismissed Putin’s proposal to have Russian authorities aid in the investigation into the 12 Russian military intelligence officials indicted recently in connection with the election interference.
