NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) — Authorities say two robbery suspects have been arrested after a church van being chased by police crash into a NJ TRANSIT bus. Officials say the two suspects were being pursued following a crime spree involving three different vehicles, including the church van, in Newark. Police say two masked suspects had robbed two people at gunpoint within five minutes of each other in Newark around 11:30 p.m. Thursday. Police said a third robbery involving the church van happened around 1:15 a.m. Friday. Shortly after, Maplewood police spotted the van and chased the vehicle back into Newark. During the pursuit, a Maplewood patrol car crashed into another vehicle near the intersection of Colgate and Broom, but no one was seriously hurt. The Essex County Sheriff’s Department continued the pursuit. That’s when police said the van crashed into a NJ TRANSIT bus near Springfield Avenue and S. 17th Street in Newark. The bus and the van ended up on the property of the United House of Prayer For All People. “I came outside and I heard a boom and there were several passenger getting out of this van and the NJ TRANSIT bus,” neighbor Thomas Judd told CBS2’s Jenna DeAngelis. “Newark police was on the scene very fast.” The driver and nine passengers on the bus were not seriously injured. Several people posted photos of a man in La Puente asking for money for the funeral of Jose Mendoza, who supposedly died of leukemia. In reality, the photo was of Gabriel Fernandez , an 8-year-old Palmdale boy whose gruesome death made headlines five years ago. A witness who goes by “Mike” told CBS2 News he quickly figured out the man’s ruse. “I turned red, I was so — I wanted to scream at him and say something to him, but I didn’t want to get involved,” said Mike, who saw the man on the corner of Amar Road and Hacienda Boulevard Thursday afternoon. “I immediately saw his picture, and I’m like, ‘The guy has the nerve to use the picture that’s all over the Internet.’ So, yeah, it hurt, but then it kind of turned [into] a little bit of anger.” Mike took a photo of the man and shared it on Twitter. Mike agrees. “I’m a firm believer in karma, and I hope it comes back to him,” echoed Mike. Gabriel died in May 2013 after he was starved and beaten by his mother Pearl Sinthia Fernandez and her boyfriend Isauro Aguirre. During their trials for murder and torture, prosecutors revealed gruesome details of the boy’s abuse, which included getting handcuffed, being shot by a BB gun and getting pepper-sprayed. Fernandez was sentenced to life in prison, and Aguirre was given the death penalty earlier this year . Gabriel’s cousin told CBS2 she is outraged but has seen this type of scheme before in her neighborhood in the San Fernando Valley. She had the following message for the persons perpetrating the lies: Gabriel suffered a lot during his lifetime. He was buried 5 years ago. Let him rest in peace. GARDEN GROVE (CBSLA) — Authorities said three teen pedestrians were hit by an SUV in Garden Grove Thursday evening. The teens — all males — were crossing a busy intersection when witnesses said an SUV going southbound on Westminster slammed into them. The accident happened at a crosswalk at Kerry Street near Brookhurst Street around 6 p.m. Witnesses told KCAL9’s Chris Holmstrom all of the teens were conscious when help arrived. The teems were all taken to a local trauma center with serious injuries. One witness, Ruben Rodriguez, said the SUV ran a red light and “took all three kids with him.” Rodriguez said he called 911 immediately. “They were all in pretty bad shape,” he said, “but there was one in specific that got hit pretty bad.” Another witness, Jackie Goodbbeau, described the aftermath of the accident. “They were bleeding pretty badly from their heads,” she said, “a few bumps and bruises on their arms.” The driver stayed on scene and cooperated with authorities. They said it didn’t appear the man was under the influence. “I’m just praying that all three of the kids end up being good,” said Rodriguez.

Even the most seasoned CHP officer would have to admit this was a first. The video posted on Instagram showed the man baring it all as he rode his bike at about 9:30 a.m. Wednesday morning. The CHP got multiple calls about the “birthday suit biker” riding on the freeway between Story Road and Alum Rock. The man was seen riding northbound, southbound and even pedaling down the freeway against traffic. Police and CHP officers were not able to find him. Authorities reportedly said they were more concerned about the safety hazard posed by the man riding the bike on the freeway than they were about his lack of clothes.

CORONA (CBSLA) – A wildfire erupted Thursday near the entrance to a popular hiking spot in Corona and quickly grew to as large as 250 acres, authorities said. It was at 5 percent containment by the evening. The fire was reported at 1:20 p.m. in the Cleveland National Forest along Tin Mine Canyon off of Skyline Drive, according to fire officials. No homes have burned but more than 150 homes in the Orchard Glen community have been evacuated as airplanes drop retardant to keep flames from running down hillsides toward homes. Smoke could be seen from the Riverside (91) Freeway to the north and Interstate 15 to the east, prompting several calls to the California Highway Patrol. Evacuations were issued for the following roadways: Trudy Way, Folson Circle, Brannon Circle, Burrero Way, Rawley Street, Burnett Circle, Elker Road, Corbett Street, Gareth Circle, and Fanning Circle.
