NEW YORK (CNN) — Facebook just suffered the biggest wipeout in stock market history. Shares plunged 19% on Thursday after executives warned that revenue growth would slow as the company focuses on user privacy. The sell-off vaporized about $119 billion in market value — the biggest single-day loss for any public company in history, according to Thomson Reuters. For founder Mark Zuckerberg, the loss came to almost $16 billion, according to Forbes , which tracks billionaire wealth in real time. That dropped him from fourth to sixth on the list of richest people in the world. Facebook Chief Financial Officer David Wehner said on a conference call with investors that Facebook is “putting privacy first” after the Cambridge Analytica scandal triggered a wave of horrible press, customer angst and regulatory scrutiny around the world. As an example of its new strategy, Wehner said Facebook will put more development muscle behind the company’s Stories feature. That will put a drag on sales because Facebook makes more money on its core News Feed than its other products. Facebook says it will spend a lot of money to accomplish its goals. Wehner said the company will invest billions of dollars per year improving safety and security after a bruising period of headlines about Facebook’s role in enabling fake news and election meddling. “We think that’s the right thing to do for the business,” he said. The company’s previous worst single-day performance was July 27, 2012, when the stock fell 11.7%. The stock tanked that day after the company failed to convince investors that it could sell mobile advertising. Mobile now makes up 91% of the company’s advertising revenue. PHOENIX, Ariz. (CBS Local) – Customers of Walmart and other businesses in the Phoenix area will soon have a chance to go shopping in self-driving cars. Waymo, a subsidiary of Google-parent company Alphabet, is teaming with the retail giant to test a program that’ll have people riding in self-driving cars to run errands and shop, the autonomous car company said Wednesday. People who order groceries on Walmart.com will get discounts, and as their orders are being readied, driver-less Waymo vehicles will bring customers to and from a Walmart store in Chandler, Arizona. Waymo is also teaming with Avis, AutoNation, Element Hotel and commercial real estate firm DDR to offer self-driving vehicles to people doing business with the companies. “While these are metro Phoenix-specific partnerships today, these businesses are national, and what we learn from these programs will give us a network of partners when we launch in new cities down the road,” Waymo said in a blog post . The service is initially available to about 400 participants in Waymo’s early-rider program within a 100-square-mile section of Phoenix. The company that started in 2009 as Google’s self-driving car project will also give people rides while their cars are serviced at area AutoNation repair shops, along with lifts to restaurants and shops in the Ahwatukee Foothills Town Center. Tom Ward, a Walmart vice president, put in a plug for the pilot project in his own blog post . “Our personal shoppers get to work meticulously picking customers’ orders based on their pickup times. Waymo does the rest! They transport customers to and from pickup, and all the while, those customers can text, nap, work… you name it!” Waymo will hope its self-driving trial in Arizona steers clear of the problems that hurt Uber earlier this year. The ride-hailing company halted its own autonomous driving program in the state earlier this year after a self-driving vehicle struck and killed a woman in Phoenix. A police investigation later found that the back-up driver behind the wheel of the Uber vehicle had been watching a TV program on her phone. [H/T CBS News ]

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (CBS Local) – A Tennessee teen and several other people visiting a Florida beach have been infected with hookworms. Michael Dumas, a 17-year-old from Memphis, was on a mission trip to South Florida with friends when they visited Pompano Beach. Dumas was photographed having a good time and being buried in the sand by his group on June 20. The beach goers didn’t know it would leave the teen covered in scars only days later. Doctors quickly diagnosed him with a severe case of hookworms. At least four other people in Dumas’ group were also infected that day. Michael’s mother, Kelli Dumas, documented the gruesome scene on Facebook as her son’s feet swelled up from the infection and required dermatologists to try to freeze the worms with liquid nitrogen. “He could actually feel the worms moving in his body,” Kelli Dumas said, via WJAX . **WARNING- PHOTOS CONTAIN GRAPHIC CONTENT** According to the CDC, hookworm larva penetrate the skin of humans and infections are usually transmitted by walking barefoot on contaminated soil. The teen has reportedly been left home-bound by the infection and needs to soak in bleach water each day. The Dumas family claims they reached out to county officials in Florida to warn others about the parasites on Pompano Beach, but did not receive any help. “How many people have been on the beach since June 19?” Dumas reportedly asked the Broward County Health Department. “How many people have been on the beach since I called her July 17? She told me when I said ‘I just want you to put a warning sign,’ she said to me ‘That’s not my job.’” Dumas’ Facebook post has been shared over 8,000 times and warns parents to never let their children be buried in beach sand. “The Health Department in Pompano Beach said ‘Everyone knows to wear shoes on the beach because you can get parasites.’ I assured them everyone does NOT KNOW THAT!!” Dumas wrote on social media.
