SOUTH LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — Authorities said two men were killed and four more wounded in a shooting outside a South LA liquor store Saturday evening. The incident happened outside Monarch Liquors around 8:30 p.m. at 88th and Vermont Avenue in what officials are calling a drive-by shooting. The four wounded are expected to survive. KCAL9’s Jeff Nguyen said detectives told him there were bullet casings up and down the street. Witnesses said they heard about a dozen shots. They said several people riding in a black, four-door vehicle drove by and began shooting. The injured were taken to nearby hospitals. Nguyen spoke to several witnesses, none of them wanted to appear on camera. “I was in a car with my cousin,” one woman said, “and they just started shooting out the window. I got out when the shooting started and I went in cause my mom was in the store. And basically when I came out, a person that I know was shot and on the ground. And shot a couple of times. He was just an innocent bystander. It’s crazy.” Another man said he saw people running for cover. “I saw people running towards the corner,” he said, “and when I came to see it, my friends were still there. And there was a guy dead. And I just backed up, I didn’t want to see it.” What led up to the shooting is under investigation.

(CNN) — Ximena Barreto, a far-right political pundit who was appointed in December to a communications post at the Department of Health and Human Services, resigned on Friday, an HHS official confirmed to CNN . Barreto was placed on leave in April following reports from CNN and Media Matters that she spread conspiracies and made anti-Muslim comments. After issuing a public apology, she returned to work but was moved from her job as a deputy director of communications. Barreto’s resignation was first reported by Politico . Last month, Mediaite reported additional inflammatory tweets from Barreto including that she tweeted in June, after her public apology, that CNN’s story on her tweets was “a smear.” Liberal watchdog Media Matters has reported that Barreto called Islam “a cult” and pushed the false Pizzagate conspiracy theory, which alleged that Hillary Clinton was part of a child-sex ring based in part at a Washington, DC, pizza restaurant. A subsequent KFile review of her Twitter account “RepublicanChick” found that Barreto also repeatedly used the hashtag #BanIslam and twice shared conspiracy theories about the death of Democratic National Committee staffer Seth Rich. Barreto also shared a conspiracy theory that French President Emmanuel Macron was controlled by the Rothschild family and that Clinton and former President Barack Obama were controlled by investor and Democratic mega-donor George Soros. Both the Rothschilds and Soros are frequent targets of anti-Semitic conspiracy theories. Before joining HHS Barreto did work for Donald Trump’s campaign in California during the 2016 election. A copy of Barreto’s résumé , obtained by CNN last month through a Freedom of Information Act request, also showed she listed as qualifications for the communications job her previous work for a conspiratorial website and a YouTube show she co-hosted on which she made anti-Muslim comments. — Andrew Kaczynski The-CNN-Wire ( & © 2018 Cable News Network, Inc., a Time Warner Company. LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — In addition to the brush fires burning out of control in Idyllwild and Redding, several other large blazes are giving firefighter’s massive headaches around the state and nearby. In Napa County, the Steele Fire has destroyed or seriously damaged 10-15 homes. Napa County Sheriff’s have issued a mandatory evacuation for the area. In Mendocino County in Northern California, the Mendocino Complex Fire is what Cal-Fire is calling the River and Ranch Fires — the two blazes were burning miles apart and combined to burn about 9,000 acres. That fire is just two percent contained, authorities said. A fire burning near Yosemite — the Ferguson Fire — is about 30 percent contained. The Ferguson Fire caused the closure of most of Yosemite and authorities expect it to remain closed at least through Friday. A fire in the rural community of De Luz, near Fallbrook, has forced the evacuation of 100 people from their homes. That blaze began Saturday afternoon. The fire has burned about 50 acres and is only two percent contained, firefighters said. Governor Brown on Saturday declared a state of emergency in the state because of the Mendocino, Napa and Lake fires. The Governor also ordered state flags to be flown at half-staff in honor of two firefighters killed battling the Carr Fire. On Saturday, the death toll in that fire rose when two children and their great-grandmother were confirmed dead.

REDDING, CA (CBSNewYork/CBSNews) – The Carr Fire in Northern California has now claimed five lives, including a woman and her two great grandchildren. At 80,000 acres, it’s the largest of more than 20 wildfires burning across the state. A Cal Fire firefighter mops up hot spots after the Carr Fire moved through the area on July 28, 2018 in Redding, California. (Photo by Justin Sullivan/Getty Images) “We’re by no means out of the woods. We have areas that are still threatened, still evacuated,” said Jonathan Cox, of Cal Fire. “We’re really at the mercy of some of these high winds.” Officials say the strong winds picked up, fanning the flames overnight, and the fire grew by 35 percent. More From CBS News Some 37,000 residents have fled the fire zone. But other homeowners vowed to stay put as long as possible. “I check it every once and a while and take a look to see if I can see anything active going on,” homeowner Martin Clark said. Firefighters were also battling triple-digit heat, making it much harder to get the flames under control. “It takes a lot of effort to pull your body through 110-degree weather and do the job that we’re supposed to be doing,” said Marc Ellsworth, with Eldorado Hotshots. It was a heart-wrenching scene for families caught off guard by the fast-moving fire. “I miss home, and I’m hoping that no one else loses their house or their life,” one woman said. The wildfires have chewed through more than 160,000 acres.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — There were scary moments Saturday for riders on the Coney Island Cyclone roller coaster. The world famous ride temporarily lost power, forcing passengers to walk down the stairs of the 85-foot wooden coaster. “The Cyclone Roller Coaster temporarily lost power today due to an electrical issue and the cars slowed to a stop on the track. Cyclone personnel safely guided guests from the cars without incident. Power has been restored and inspectors have inspected the ride to certify that everything is fully safe and operational. The Cyclone is running and open for guests,” Luna Park said in a statement. It was closed to just over two hours, but is now back up and running. No one was hurt.

STUDIO CITY (CBSLA) — The Los Angeles Police Dept. has identified the two officers who accidentally shot into a crowded Trader Joe’s in Silver Lake during a firefight with a suspected gunman last Saturday, resulting in the death of store manager Melyda “Mely” Corado. Officers Sinlen Tse and Sarah Winans were named in the late Friday LAPD press release . Tse and Winans were involved in the pursuit that led to the shootout at the Silver Lake Trader Joe’s on the afternoon of July 21. According to police, Gene Atkins, 28, allegedly shot his grandmother and girlfriend at the family’s home on East 32nd Street in South L.A. around 1:30 p.m. Atkins then fled northbound, after which the vehicle he was driving was tracked via LoJack in the Hollywood area after 3 p.m. Atkins then led Tse and Winans on a pursuit that ended when he crashed into a pole outside the Trader Joe’s on the 2700 block of Hyperion Avenue. Atkins is said to have shot at officers during the chase and continued to shoot at them once he ran into the store, the press release states. The officers shot back at Atkins as they sought cover just behind a north wall abutting the store’s parking lot. During the shootout, store manager Melyda “Mely” Corado was hit by a bullet shot by police as she attempted to run away from the store, the department said in the days following the incident. The LAPD did not say which officer’s bullet struck Corado. Police attempted to revive the 27-year-old woman but she died at the scene, police said. “The two Los Angeles police officers who had been pursuing Atkins returned fire in defense of their lives and to protect Atkins from harming other individuals,” Chief Michel Moore told reporters last week. Atkins was shot in his left forearm and barricaded himself inside the store with several hostages inside. After a three-hour standoff, Atkins allowed himself to be handcuffed and was taken into custody. He faces 30 charges, including one count of murder, six counts of attempted murder, 13 counts of false imprisonment of hostages and one count of felony evading. His arraignment was postponed for August 14, and he is being held on $18.7 million bail. Since Atkins caused the shootout, he is being charged with Corado’s murder despite not having shot her. The community of Silver Lake has come together to honor the life of Melyda Corado, who was described by family members and coworkers as a loving person who liked to make people laugh. Several vigils have been held for Corado at the store, which is still lined with hundreds of flowers and letters to Corado. The family released the following statement thanking the community: “On behalf of the Corado family, we would like to thank family, friends, our Trader Joe’s family, the Silver Lake community, and people all over the nation for their overwhelming love and support during this immensely difficult time. We will never heal from this senseless tragedy, but everyone’s thoughts and prayers are helping us cope with this insurmountable loss.” The family also announced Corado’s funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Sunday, July 29 at Forest Hills Memorial Park, Hollywood Hills. The service will be open to the public. The Los Angeles Times editorial board applauded the LAPD’s “welcome bit of transparency” in the shooting’s aftermath, while some have questioned the officers’ decision to shoot at a moving target from a considerable distance towards a crowded grocery store.

HOLMDEL, N.J. (CBSNewYork) – A New Jersey school superintendent accused of defecating on another school’s track and field has resigned. Kenilworth School Superintendent Thomas Tramaglini allegedly relieved himself on a daily basis at Holmdel High School’s track and field. Police said he was caught in the act in May. Former Kenilworth School Superintendent Thomas Tramaglini (Credit: CBS2) In a statement released this week, the Kenilworth Board of Education said the superintendent has tendered his resignation. He was already put on paid leave . “Based on events unrelated to his service for Kenilworth, it has become clear to both Dr. Tramaglini and the Kenilworth Board of Education that his continued service as Superintendent of Schools has become too much of a distraction to the main mission of the district,” the statement read in part. Tramaglini, 42, of Matawan, lives about three miles from the Holmdel track. He was charged with lewdness, littering and defecating in public. His resignation is effective September 30.
