Bridge Jumper Lands On Boat In Newport Beach

NEWPORT BEACH (CBSLA) — A stunt gone wrong in Newport Beach. As CBSLA’s Tina Patel reports, a guy jumped off the Lido Island Bridge and slammed into a boat. A woman on that boat was injured but before she could do anything the jumper got away. Video posted to social media shows a boy, possibly in his late teens, jump off a bridge onto the canopy of a boat passing underneath. The canopy buckled under his weight. The woman who rented the boat was hit in the head but luckily only suffered minor injuries. She said the boy fell off into the water then before she could do anything he swam to shore and limped away. “It looked intentional. I don’t want to say it was,” said Jake Leonardo, manager of the boat rental company OC Boat Rental. “I’m not going to put anyone’s actions, say someone’s actions were intentional. But it appears that way. It looks like he was trying to jump over the boat as a joke but either way it’s an unsafe situation for anybody.” Harbor Patrol responded. They are looking into the incident. They don’t know if it could be considered assault since the teen might have been trying to jump over the boat but they want to identify who it is. If you have any information on who it might be, you’re asked to come forward.

Tesla Crashes Into Newport Beach Beauty Supply Shop

NEWPORT BEACH (CBSLA) — A woman was hurt Monday when a Tesla suddenly crashed into a beauty supply shop and nail salon. The impact was so forceful the car ended up inside the building and it could have been much worse. As CBSLA’s Michele Gile reports, the manicurist was talking on her phone outside the building before the customers arrived when the crash occurred just before 9:45 a.m. at 3601 Jamboree Road. The car did not hit her but chunks of cement did. Her boss said she is going to be OK. A second woman inside the beauty supply store was right in the path of the car but moved seconds before the accident. “One of the hairdressers that was also working inside was turning on the air and it was exactly where the car drove through,” said Planet Beauty manager Tara Lugo. “Thankfully they heard the crash next door in the nail salon so they knew something dangerous was happening and ran right out of the way and the car literally came right through where she was standing so there was definitely an angel over her shoulder today.” The video shows products literally flying off the shelves as the car landed in the middle of the showroom. Witnesses say the stunned driver who was a customer got out a minute later and put her hands on her head as soon as she saw the damage. The woman eventually crumbled to the floor. Pamela Taibi works at Planet Beauty and saw it all. “I was trying to park to go to the cleaners,” said Taibi. “She said that she put her foot on the brake and the car just jumped.” Employees have now asked the landlord at the shopping center to put up steel barriers so it doesn’t happen again.

OC Man Sentenced To 2 Life Terms For Kidnapping Pot Dispensary Owner, Cutting Off His Penis

STUDIO CITY (CBSLA) — A Fountain Valley man convicted of kidnapping and torturing the owner of an Orange County marijuana dispensary will spend the rest of his life in jail. Kyle Handley, 39, was sentenced to two consecutive life terms in prison Friday for abducting, torturing and sexually mutilating the owner of a medical pot shop, thinking the man had vast amounts of cash. On October 12, 2012, Handley and two other suspects Hossein Nayeri and Ryan Kevorkian kidnapped the shop owner and his female companion from the man’s Newport Beach home. They had been staking out the owner near Palm Springs for weeks and believed the man was burying cash in the desert at the time they committed the crime. Prosecutors said the suspects drove the couple out to the desert, torturing the man with a blowtorch in the process. Eventually, they cut off the man’s penis, poured bleach over him, then took the man’s member so it could not be reattached. The couple was abandoned in the desert before the woman, still bound with zip ties, ran more than a mile to flag down police. The man survived his injuries. Handley was convicted of kidnapping, mayhem and torture in January. Nayer, who was extradited from Prague where he’d fled, and Kevorkian have pleaded not guilty. ‘Do Not Go Swimming Alone’: More High Tides Expected In O.C.

NEWPORT BEACH (CBSLA) — If you are heading to the beach this weekend, do not go swimming alone. The surf in Newport Beach is expected to reach up to 7-feet, and with the king tides comes greater danger. On Saturday, a 52-year-old Aliso Viejo man died after being rescued from Thousands Steps beach in Laguna. Another man pulled from the water Friday is expected to be OK. “The last two days, we’ve had two swimmers, both were over the age of 50 years of age. They were strong, athletic swimmers, but they were by themselves,” said Capt. Steve Concialdi of the Orange County Fire Department. The man who died is the 16th drowning victim in O.C. just this year.

Newport Beach Braces For Possible Flooding From King Tides

NEWPORT BEACH (CBSLA) — The sandbags are in place. Residents of Newport Beach are concerned about King Tides. Those high tides caused flooding earlir this week. Summer sun and surf and tolerable temperatures had people flocking to the beach Saturday. CBS2’s Greg Mills talked to people who came for the perfect beach setting. “It’s beautiful out,” said Marquita Alexander from Phoenix. “We love the 80 degree weather,” said Rafael Reveles of Corona. The great weather conditions could all change starting tonight if the tide turns dangerous. It’s expected to hit around 10:50 p.m. Orange County is under a coastal flood advisory. “It happens every year,” says Charlie Maas. He works here and has to keep track of the tides. He said Wednesday’s tides were the highest of the year. “Our highest tide was 7-foot 1-inch, and it’s going to be 6-foot 9-inches tonight,” said Maas. The Balboa Fun Zone turned into a flood zone Wednesday. “Out here, it was curb high,” says Maas. “Got the harbor on one side, the beach on the other. When the tide comes up, a makes a disaster really,” says Newport Beach resident Brendan Cashman. There are pumps in place to ship the water back where it belongs. There were also sand bags in place, but the water came in with such force it went up and over the barriers. Beach side, people continued to look for ways to escape the heat. Reveles couldn’t wait to get out of Corona last week. “It was about 116 degrees,” he said. And is he ready for another round of the oven-like heat this week. “No,” he says, “not really. Not really.”

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A California police department is drawing attention to a 45-year-old murder case by tweeting about the crime as if it just happened, in the voice of the 11-year-old victim. All of the tweets have been collected in a Moment here: https://t.co/yxv1fLFIZp pic.twitter.com/ubijjtDZkg — Newport Beach Police (@NewportBeachPD) July 7, 2018 The Newport Beach Police Department just south of Los Angeles suspended all its normal Twitter content on Saturday to post an extensive series of tweets about Linda O’Keefe, an 11-year-old girl kidnapped while walking home from school on July 6, 1973. The blue-eyed girl’s body was found the following morning in a nearby nature preserve. The department wrote the powerful tweets as if Linda herself was telling readers about the last hours of her young life. The tweets became a Moment on the social media site and have been gaining attention under #LindasStory. Although police have become more reliant on Twitter and other platforms to spread the word about important cases or public safety information, the dozens of unique tweets telling Linda’s story show how some departments are more fully embracing the power and popularity of such outlets. The tweets begin by telling readers about Linda’s morning and day at summer school, including that her mother told her she couldn’t pick her up and to take the short walk home. “No one is concerned when I don’t come home from school right away. Or not TOO concerned, anyway,” reads one post written in Linda’s voice. “It’s a different time back in 1973, and kids roam the neighborhood on their bikes for hours at a time.” The tweets detail how Linda’s parents and 18-year-old sister began looking for her and calling around to friends and family. They also explain in chilling detail how a bicyclist found her body while he was looking for frogs among cattails. “He sees something small, and pale. My hand. He sees my hand,” the tweet reads. “He screams, trying to rouse me.” Another tweet describes how the man’s friends follow his screams and see her body, as well. “They don’t know who I am, of course … or who I was,” the tweet says. “But they see a young girl’s body, still in my mom’s homemade dress. I’ve been strangled.” In addition to the tweets, the department posted what they say is a new lead , images of the suspected killer and what he might have looked like in 1973 and what he would look like now — all based on DNA evidence used to predict his eye, hair and skin color, and his face shape. In a news release about the series of tweets, the department said the posts were designed to “give Linda a voice once again.” “Years have passed since this heinous murder, but the (department) remains dedicated to justice for Linda, and committed to finding her killer,” the department said. Newport Beach Sues ‘Church Of The Holy Grail’ Alleging It’s Operating As ‘Unlawful’ Pot Dispensary

NEWPORT BEACH (CBSLA) — The city of Newport Beach has filed suit against a local business, alleging that it was operating as an unlawful marijuana dispensary. In court papers filed late June , the city indicated that it was seeking injunctions and civil penalties among other remedies against the Church of the Holy Grail (“Holy Grail”) located at 2072 Southeast Bristol Street. According to the suit, the Holy Grail has been operating as a facility to “unlawfully sell, serve, store, keep, or give away marijuana in violation of federal, state, and local law.” The city cited municipal code sections that prohibit marijuana dispensaries in the City, as well as zoning ordinances that require licensing. The city further alleged that the defendants had been operating a business without a license or zoning approval in contravention of the municipal code as well as the Medicinal and Adult-Use Cannabis Regulation and Safety Act, which requires that marijuana-related activities comply with local laws. Cristian L. Peirano, an attorney for the Holy Grail, said in a letter from February that the company’s “use of marijuana is a lawful exercise of religion,” according to the suit. CBS Los Angeles reached out to Peirano Sunday for further comment, but has not yet heard back. But as legal commentator and attorney Lou Shapiro points out, “the issue in the case is religion cannot be used to circumvent municipality laws.” “The government is not restricting people from exercising their religion,” said Shapiro, who is not representing either side in the case. “Rather, they are saying you can practice religion, but it has to be within the confines of the law.” A hearing in this matter has been scheduled for later this month, court records show.
