Yankees’ Aaron Judge Says Fractured Wrist ‘Could’ve Been A Lot Worse’

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) — Aaron Judge immediately knew something was wrong. He’d been hit by pitches before, and they never felt like this. A day later, the New York Yankees slugger could smile. Sort of. His fractured right wrist will put him out for three weeks, not the rest of the season. “It could’ve been a lot worse,” Judge said Friday night. Yankees manager Aaron Boone said it was “pretty realistic” that Judge should be able to play a game in three weeks. Asked whether that would be a minor league rehab appearance or a return to the Yankees’ lineup, Judge said he thought it meant the majors. “With the Yankees,” the All-Star right fielder said, “I believe.” Judge is hitting .285 with 26 home runs and 61 RBIs. Boone said Giancarlo Stanton will take over in right during Judge’s recovery — Stanton has split time in left field, right and at designated hitter. Judge was nailed by a tailing fastball from Kansas City right-hander Jakob Junis in the first inning Thursday night. “I had a bad feeling,” Judge said. “I didn’t have a good feeling when it hit me.” Judge winced, did a quick twirl in the batter’s box, slung his bat toward the dugout and headed to first base. NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) – One of the New York Yankees’ biggest bats, Aaron Judge , was injured during Thursday night’s game – a major blow to the team’s lineup. But then, something unusual happened. Fans at the game started a sort of vigil for the slugger. The sight never before seen at a Yankees’ game sparked a look of confusion on first baseman Greg Bird’s face. “Now what do you make of this? (AP) — Sergio Romo relieved in the eighth inning, shifted to third base when Jonny Venters replaced him in the ninth, then struck out Brett Gardner to end the game with two on and give the Tampa Bay Rays a 3-2 win over the New York Yankees on Wednesday. Scheduled Rays starter Nathan Eovaldi was traded to AL East-leading Boston about two hours before game time, and six pitchers combined on a seven-hitter. New York has lost just two series since May, and both are against the Rays. Tampa Bay swept three games in late June, took two of three this week and has won six of its last seven against the Yankees. New York, 14-14 over its last 28 games, acquired reliever Zach Britton from Baltimore late Tuesday but said he will not report until Thursday’s homestand opener against Kansas City. Neil Walker hit a sacrifice fly in the second inning, but the Rays took a 3-1 lead in the sixth when Kevin Kiermaier hit a two-run homer off Luis Cessa (1-2) and C.J. ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Gary Sanchez failed to hustle on a pair of key plays, Jake Bauers hit a three-run homer and scored with some nifty baserunning, and the Tampa Bay Rays beat Luis Severino and the New York Yankees 7-6 on Monday night. The Yankees loaded the bases against Jose Alvarado with one out in the ninth when Brett Gardner singled, Aaron Judge walked and Giancarlo Stanton was intentionally walked. After Aaron Hicks hit into a force out at the plate, Alvarado got his first save when Sanchez grounded out, a play where Hicks beat the play at second but the Yankees catcher was thrown out at first after jogging most of the way there. Hicks limped off the field after his slide. Bauers made it 4-1 on his sixth homer in the fifth. Tampa Bay took a 1-0 lead in the first when Bauers had a two-out double and aggressively scored from second on Sanchez’s 10th passed ball. Sanchez and Severino got their signs crossed up, leading to the passed ball. Sanchez slowly chased the ball as it bounced away in foul territory, giving Bauers time to score from second base. Severino (14-3) allowed a season-high seven runs and 11 hits in five-plus innings. The 24-year-old righty struck out eight to reach 504 for his career, joining Al Downing (644) and Lefty Gomez (511) as the only Yankees’ pitchers to reach 500 strikeouts with the club before turning 25. New York has gone 13-13 over its last 26 games, a stretch that started when Tampa Bay had a three-game sweep over the Yankees June 22-24. Daniel Robertson, who had a pinch-hit walk-off grand slam in Sunday’s 6-4 win over Miami, got his third hit with a solo homer in a three-run sixth that extended Tampa Bay’s advantage to 7-3. New York pulled within 4-3 in the sixth when Stanton crossed the plate on Jesus Sucre’s passed ball and an RBI single by Sanchez. Stanton had a two-run single in a three-run seventh that cut the Yankees’ deficit to 7-6. He went 4 for 4, and has 15 hits in last 31 at-bats. In his previous game at Tropicana Field June 24, Stanton had five hits in five at-bats. In the ninth, Didi Gregorius sacrifice bunted with Gardner and Judge aboard, setting up Stanton’s intentional walk. Manager Aaron Boone said he was concerned about the lefty-lefty matchup with Gregorius facing Alvarado, even knowing the bunt would likely take the bat from Stanton’s hands. The Yankees tied it at 1 during the second when Stanton hit a towering fly that center fielder Kevin Kiermaier appeared to lose in the ceiling and went for a double. Stanton scored on Miguel Andujar’s single. Matt Andriese (3-4), the second of seven pitchers in the Rays’ bullpen day, allowed two unearned runs in 3 2/3 innings. CLEVELAND (AP) — Michael Brantley homered leading off the eighth inning, and the Cleveland Indians headed into the All-Star break with a 5-2 win over the New York Yankees on Sunday to split their four-game series. One of six Cleveland players who will be in Washington for Tuesday’s All-Star Game, Brantley broke a 2-2 tie by belting a pitch from Chad Green (5-2) into the seats in right for his 12th homer. The Indians added two more runs in the inning on a sacrifice fly by Yan Gomes and Green’s wild pitch. The right-hander was available after pitching only five innings in Wednesday night’s 19-4 blowout of Cincinnati. Cody Allen struck out two in the ninth and got his 20th save in 21 opportunities, and Cleveland’s win ended with the Indians worrying about Edwin Encarnacion. Cleveland’s cleanup hitter homered in the fourth inning, but had to leave in the eighth after being hit on the right hand by a pitch. However, Indians manager Terry Francona said the slugger “is fine.” “It got the meat of the hand, fortunately,” Francona said. “That was a big sigh of relief.” Neil Walker homered for the Yankees, who enter the break 29 games over .500 and have the majors’ second-best record. However, the Yankees are trailing the scorching Boston Red Sox in the AL East. Aaron Judge struck out three times against All-Star Trevor Bauer, and Giancarlo Stanton fanned twice for New York. Bauer held the Yankees in check for seven innings, limiting the Bronx Bombers to two runs and seven hits. The right-hander will not pitch on Tuesday at Nationals Park unless the game goes to extra innings and Houston manager A.J. Hinch runs out of arms. Yankees Cut Ties With Papa Johns Over Founder’s Comments

NEW YORK (CBSNews) — The fallout continued Friday for Papa John’s, as business partners and even universities that have accepted large sums from the pizza chain’s founder scrambled to distance themselves after John Schnatter admitted using a racial slur during a business call. The University of Louisville announced that the school’s football stadium will no longer carry the Papa John’s name. The stadium is to be redubbed “Cardinal Stadium” effective immediately , university president Neeli Bendapudi said Friday. Later that day, Schnatter admitted to using the N-word on a conference call and apologized, but said it was taken out of context. In a radio interview with WHAS in Louisville, Schnatter said he feels “sick” about the incident. Explaining how he came to use the slur, he said was “just talking the way that the Colonel talked,” according to The Associated Press — a reference to the Colonel Sanders of KFC. But “I said it, and it’s wrong,” he told the station. Cutting ties The University of Kentucky, which houses the “John H. Schnatter Institute for the Study of Free Enterprise,” on Friday said it would no longer use Schnatter’s name. “We appreciate Mr. Schnatter’s understanding that his unacceptable language is contrary to the values of the University of Kentucky,” it said on Twitter. However, believing that maintaining ties with him would create a “barrier,” the statement said, “neither the Gatton College of Business and Economics nor the Institute will recognize Mr. Schnatter in any way.” Schnatter helped found the center in 2005 with a he made an $8 million gift to the school. The Charles Koch Foundation contributed $4 million to help start the center. Even Papa John’s Pizza is moving to distance itself from the man who started the company. The chain on Friday said it was pulling Schnatter’s image from its marketing materials. It also plans to launch a listening tour and hire an outside auditor on matters of inclusion, it said. “We want to regain trust, though I know we need to earn it,” CEO Steve Ritchie said in a statement. Papa John’s does not plan to change its name, according to the Associated Press. The face of the company Schnatter has long been the face of the Papa John’s brand, and the company has acknowledged in regulatory filings that its business could be hurt if his reputation was damaged. That scenario seemed to play out last year after Schnatter blamed disappointing pizza sales on the outcry surrounding NFL players kneeling during the national anthem. At the time Papa John’s was an NFL sponsor. He resigned as CEO soon after. This week, Schnatter stepped down from his role as chairman of the board of the pizza chain. He remains the company’s largest shareholder, however, owning about 30 percent of Papa John’s shares. Sports teams are also pulling the plug on partnerships with Papa John’s in wake of Schnatter’s comments. The New York Yankees said on Friday they were ending their relationship with the franchise. “In response to the reprehensible remarks made by Papa John’s founder and owner, the New York Yankees are suspending their relationship with the company,” the MLB team said on Twitter . Previously, the Miami Marlins said they were ending their relationship with the chain, including ending a promotional deal and closing the Papa John’s concession stand at Marlins Park, according to the Miami Herald . The Tampa Bay Rays made a similar move on Thursday, ending a promotion offering fans half-price pizza after a game in which the team scored six or more runs. Also on Friday, the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons and Atlanta United of Major League Soccer said they are suspending their partnerships with Papa John’s and reexamining the relationship, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution . “The divisive comments made and acknowledged by the company’s founder are reprehensible and do not align with our core values,” AMB Sports and Entertainment, a group representing the franchises, said in a statement. Hometown fallout Fallout from the incident is having local repercussions as well. Schnatter’s hometown of Jeffersonville, Indiana, is putting distance between itself and the man it once called a “hometown hero.” The mayor of Jeffersonville, Mike Moore, returned a $400,000 donation from Schnatter to restore the Nachand Fieldhouse , a historic gym. Schnatter had pledged $800,000 to renovate the building, which also carried his name until earlier this week . “I’m not going to allow that name with those comments to be attached to anything in the city of Jeffersonville,” Moore told CBS News affiliate WLKY. “An $800,000 gift to the city of Jeff is enormous, but the city of Jeff is worth more than $800,000. After fouling a pitch off his foot, Hicks drove a 3-2 delivery from Kluber (12-5) to deep center field, scoring Didi Gregorius easily from first base when the ball one-hopped the wall. BALTIMORE (AP) — Brett Gardner had four hits, homered and drove in three runs to help the New York Yankees beat the Baltimore Orioles 10-2 Monday night for a doubleheader split. In the opener, Danny Valencia snapped an 0-for-25 skid with a three-run homer off CC Sabathia, and Baltimore ended a six-game losing streak with a 5-4 victory. The split left the Yankees a 4-4 record against Baltimore and dropped them 2½ games behind first-place Boston in the AL East. The first game ended with Gardner grounding out as a pinch hitter with the potential tying run on third base. He returned in the nightcap to torment the Orioles at the plate and in center field, where he made several fine, running catches. Gardner led off with a single off Jefry Ramirez (0-3) and scored on a double by Didi Gregorius. In the fourth, Gardner hit his seventh homer, a two-run drive that made it 3-0. That was enough offense for Luis Cessa (1-1), who allowed three hits over six shutout innings. A four-run eighth —highlighted by Austin Romine’s two-run homer and an RBI double by Gardner — ended any doubt. TORONTO (AP) — Justin Smoak hit a three-run homer, Yangervis Solarte reached base four times and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the New York Yankees 6-2 on Friday night. Smoak connected in Toronto’s five-run second inning, when the Blue Jays batted around and put an early end to struggling right-hander Sonny Gray’s latest outing. Solarte went 3 for 4 with a walk as the Blue Jays won for the 12th time in 16 home games. Aaron Hicks homered and had two RBIs in the opener of New York’s 11-game road trip. Gray (5-7) allowed five runs and six hits in two innings, his shortest start of the season and his third straight loss. Gray lasted just 2 1/3 innings in his previous start, matching a season worst by allowing six runs in an 11-0 loss to the division-leading Boston Red Sox. Gray retired the first two batters he faced Friday before loading the bases with two walks and a single. He escaped unscathed when Russell Martin struck out swinging. Things went downhill for Gray in the second, which began with Randal Grichuk’s double. One out later, Devon Travis and Curtis Granderson hit back-to-back RBI singles. Smoak capped the inning with a two-out homer, his 12th. Hicks hit a solo home run in the third, his career-high 16th, then chased Blue Jays right-hander Sam Gaviglio with a bases-loaded walk in the fifth. Joe Biagini came on and struck out Giancarlo Stanton looking, then got Didi Gregorius to fly out. Gaviglio allowed two runs, one earned, and four hits in 4 1/3 innings.
