Williams Outduels DeGrom, Pirates Blank Mets

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Trevor Williams outdueled Jacob deGrom, helping the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 5-0 win over the New York Mets on Saturday. Williams (9-7) allowed five hits in six innings with five strikeouts and three walks. He hasn’t allowed a run in 17 straight innings since he surrendered three in the third inning of a 17-5 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies on July 6. Pittsburgh’s first run came after deGrom (5-6) began the sixth inning with two strikeouts. Gregory Polanco singled down the right-field line before stealing second. Colin Moran singled to right, scoring Polanco. David Freese, who had five RBIs in a 5-4 win Friday, pinch-hit in the seventh, grounding out but scoring Jordan Luplow from third. Adam Frazier followed with a double to right, driving in Jordy Mercer from second to make it 3-0. Moran drove in Polanco again with a single up the middle in the eighth, extending it to 4-0. Polanco was 3 for 4 with two doubles; Moran was 2 for 4 with two RBIs. Francisco Cervelli made it 5-0 later in the eighth with a single that scored Luplow. Williams got out of trouble in consecutive innings, first when he got Devin Mesoraco to ground into a double play with one out and the bases loaded in the fourth. An inning later, he struck out Brandon Nimmo and forced Wilmer Flores to pop up to third, stranding runners on first and second. deGrom lost for the fourth time since June 28, when he last won a start. He allowed three runs on eight hits, his most surrendered this season, with five strikeouts in seven innings. ROSTER MOVES Mets: INF Luis Guillorme was recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas. The 23-year-old rookie has a .172 batting average with four RBIs in 29 games with New York this season. Pirates: OF Austin Meadows and INF/OF Jose Osuna were recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis. Osuna, who hit .196 with two home runs and seven RBIs in his first 23 games with Pittsburgh this season, played first base Saturday. TRAINER’S ROOM Pirates: 1B Josh Bell was placed on the 10-day disabled list with a left oblique strain. He left Pittsburgh’s game Friday after playing the first two innings. … OF Starling Marte returned to the lineup after missing the previous two games with a left hand contusion. PITTSBURGH (AP) — Asdrubal Cabrera is well versed in what can happen at the trade deadline. He found himself on the move four years ago when the Cleveland Indians sent him to Washington to help the Nationals make a playoff push. The second baseman is in the same position again with the floundering New York Mets . While he admits he’s wary of what the days leading up to July 31 could bring, he’s trying not to get worked up. The 32-year-old figures if he just comes to the park and hits the way he did in a 12-6 win over Pittsburgh on Thursday, he’ll be fine. “There’s nothing I can control. Whatever they do, they want to do what’s best for the team,” Cabrera said after going 3 for 5 with a home run and four RBIs. “I hope to stay here. I like New York. I like the team, the town.” Potential playoff teams in need of a bat are taking a long look at Cabrera, who boosted his home run total to 18 when he hit a tiebreaking two-run shot off Nick Kingham (5-5) in the fourth to put the Mets ahead to stay. Cabrera entered hitting just .184 (7 for 38) in his prior 12 games but snapped out by taking out his frustration on Kingham and three relievers. Wilmer Flores also hit a two-run homer and had three RBIs as the struggling Mets posted their highest run total since scoring a dozen times against Colorado on June 18. Amed Rosario and Jose Bautista had two hits each as New York sent the Pirates to their second straight loss following an 11-game winning streak that pushed Pittsburgh back into the postseason picture. Steven Matz (5-8) settled down after giving up two-run homers to David Freese and Josh Harrison in the early innings. Matz tied a career-high with nine strikeouts, walked two and retired his final 10 batters to win for just the third time in his last 11 starts. Matz called himself effectively wild and admitted he started to feel a bit better over his last two innings when his arm tired a bit. All nine of his strikeouts came in the first four innings. He pitched to contact over the last two innings, but only one ball left the infield. “It’s almost like I got a little tired and was able to stay smooth instead of muscle up a little bit and I think it helped me out,” Matz said. Freese and Harrison helped the Pirates dig out of early deficits but the Mets kept piling on. Kingham left after Cabrera’s shot in the fourth put New York ahead 6-4. The rookie allowed six runs and seven hits in three-plus innings, the second time in his last four starts he failed to get an out past the third. Command was an issue too. His four walks were a career high. “It makes everything more difficult,” Kingham said. “The other pitches don’t really come to happen. You don’t have a feel for it. It just kinda snowballs into one bad outing.” TRAINER’S ROOM Pirates: C Francisco Cervelli went 0 for 4 and committed an error in his return from concussion-like symptoms that had sidelined hinm since July 14. Cervelli described feeling like he had a “hangover” after getting hit by foul balls or bats in four consecutive games. Though the Cervelli has taken ground balls in practice, there are no plans to put him in a game in the infield anytime soon. “From my perspective, it’s like telling a matador not to fight bulls,” manager Clint Hurdle said. UP NEXT Mets: Jason Vargas (2-6, 8.60 ERA) is expected to come off the DL to start on Friday. Vargas has been out since June 20 with a strained right calf. To make room for Vargas the Mets optioned rookie Corey Oswalt to Triple-A Las Vegas. Pirates: Ivan Nova (6-6, 4.28 ERA) is 4-1 since returning from a stint on the DL with a sprained right ring finger on June 10. He is 1-0 with a 3.18 ERA in five starts against the Mets. Mets Place Ailing Outfielder Yoenis Cespedes On DL Following MRI

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) — Yoenis Cespedes is back on the disabled list, and the New York Mets are still deciding whether the oft-injured slugger needs surgery on both feet that would require an eight-to-10-month recovery. An announcement had been expected before Tuesday night’s game against San Diego, but about 35 minutes prior to the scheduled first pitch Mets spokesman Harold Kaufman said the team was still waiting to receive a second opinion and it was unlikely the news conference would take place until after the game. New York put Cespedes on the 10-day DL and called up infielders Jeff McNeil and Phillip Evans from Triple-A Las Vegas. Evans was in the starting lineup at third base, batting eighth. Utilityman Ty Kelly was designated for assignment. Cespedes had an MRI and was examined by a specialist Monday in an effort to determine whether he needs surgery to alleviate chronic heel pain related to all the lower-body injuries that have kept him off the field so much since he signed a $110 million, four-year contract in November 2016. The two-time All-Star returned from the disabled list Friday after missing two months with a strained right hip flexor and homered in a victory at Yankee Stadium. NEW YORK (AP) — Jacob deGrom’s winless streak reached five games as the major league ERA leader was hurt by a pair of errors behind him, and the San Diego Padres beat the New York Mets 3-2 Monday night in a matchup of teams with the worst records in the National League. Rookie left-hander Joey Lucchesi (5-5), brought back from the minor leagues, baffled the Mets for the much of the evening with his churve, a combination curveball-chanegup at about 80 mph. Manuel Margot hit a go-ahead triple in a two-run fifth inning after right fielder Jose Bautista dropped Christian Villanueva’s fly ball. The Padres made it 3-1 in the sixth when Wil Myers doubled and scored when charging shortstop Amed Rosario let Eric Hosmer’s chopper get under his glove and bounce into the outfield. DeGrom (5-5), whose ERA rose from 1.68 to 1.71, allowed three runs — two earned — and five hits in eight innings, striking out 10 and walking two. He has given up three runs or fewer in 17 consecutive appearances and became the first pitcher to win fewer than seven games in his first 20 starts with an ERA below 2.00 since earned runs started being compiled in 1912, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. New York, just 40-57 despite an 11-1 start, dealt closer Jeurys Familia last weekend and is considering trading deGrom, who is eligible for free agency after the 2020 season. DeGrom’s agent said during the All-Star break he would prefer either a long-term contract or a trade. “We love him. We know what we have,” Mets assistant general manager John Ricco said. “He’s one of the top pitchers in the game, and in order to move him in a trade it would take an awful lot.” Second baseman Asdrubal Cabrera is likely to be dealt before the July 31 deadline for trades without waivers, and the impact of a losing record was clear at the box office. The game drew 21,731, the Mets’ smallest home crowd since April 4. San Diego, which is 42-61, had lost seven of eight and 23 of 30 coming in and also is retooling, dealing All-Star closer Brad Hand last week. Lucchesi has a herky-jerky windup in which the 25-year-old left-hander brings his hands high overhead, lowers them to his chest, pauses and only then rocks and throws. He made the crowd restless in the fourth, when he threw 10 pickoffs to first with Michael Conforto on base. Lucchesi allowed two runs and six hits in 5 1/3 innings, struck out six and walked none. Kirby Yates pitched the ninth for his third save. Brandon Nimmo loaded the bases when Craig Stammen hit him with a pitch on the right knee and left ankle, the 16th time Nimmo has been plunked this season and third in two games. CURIOUS When Myers nearly missed third base while running home in the sixth inning, the Mets waited for an indication from the video room rather than have deGrom throw to third and appeal. Final Game Of Subway Series Postponed; Makeup Date Announced

NEW YORK (AP) — The scheduled Subway Series finale between the New York Mets and New York Yankees has been postponed because of rain. The game will be made up on Aug. 13 at Yankee Stadium. With steady rain falling in the Bronx, a tarp covered the infield all evening and play never began Sunday night. The game was called about an hour after the scheduled 8:05 p.m. EDT start. Mets ace Jacob deGrom (5-4), who leads the majors with a 1.68 ERA, had been slated to pitch against Yankees right-hander Masahiro Tanaka. Yankees manager Aaron Boone says the team will keep All-Star righty Luis Severino on his regular turn Monday night at Tampa Bay, with Tanaka going Tuesday. Syndergaard Celebrates Day Before Subway Series With Baseball Camp For Kids

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – The second half of the baseball season starts Friday for the Yankees and Mets with part two of their Subway Series at Yankee Stadium, and Noah Syndergaard will be on the mound for the Mets. On Thursday, he spent his final day off with some kids at a baseball camp in New Jersey, reports CBS2’s Otis Livingston. The youngsters were full of questions for the star. “Will you have three strikeouts tomorrow?” one little boy asked. “I hope I have a lot more than three,” the pitcher replied. “Will you throw a no-hitter tomorrow?” another boy asked. “I’m gonna try… They’re a good team,” the pitcher replied. But not all the questions were about baseball. Somebody even asked the man nicknamed “Thor” if his long blond locks bother him when he pitches. “It’s worth it, having the hair so,” answered Syndergaard. “How long did it take to grow your hair?” one boy asked. “I’ve been growing it out for the last three years, now I’m just in a maintenance phase,” answered Syndergaard. It’s been a rough season for Syndergaard and the Mets. He was injured since late May until making a successful return last Friday. He and Mets ace Jacob deGrom have been at the center of trade rumors recently, but the fan favorite is hoping he stays put in the Big Apple. “I love New York City,” he said. “I love doing things like this, seeing all the young Mets fans out here and it brings a lot of joy to myself personally. “I’ve embraced New York City and New York has embraced me, and hopefully I can stay a Met for the remainder of my career,” he continued. “But for right now, I really have no say in that. I have zero control over it.” The Citi Noah Syndergaard Baseball Pro Camp works with Tickets For Kids Charities to provide camp scholarships to disadvantaged kids. Thursday’s group consisted of roughly 200 youngsters in grades 1 thru 8 – mostly Met fans, but ironically, it was a Yankees fan that won the homerun hitting contest with Syndergaard pitching. “It feels really good,” said Gavin D’Altrui. “It’s fun to hit off of him, too.” The Subway Series will feature two teams headed in opposite directions: The Yankees near the top of the majors, the Mets closer to the bottom. But after losing two of three on their home field in June, expect the Mets to be geared up for a win in the series.

Wheeler Gets 1st Win In Months As Mets Top Nationals

NEW YORK (AP) — Zack Wheeler won for the first time since April 29, Michael Conforto homered and the New York Mets defeated the Washington Nationals, 7-4 on Saturday. Wilmer Flores, Jose Reyes and Kevin Plawecki each had two hits as the light-hitting Mets scored seven runs for the first time since June 24. New York came into the game last in the National League in batting average and was tied with San Diego for the third-fewest runs scored in the majors. (Photo by Jim McIsaac/Getty Images) Wheeler (3-6) was brilliant for seven innings before tiring in the eighth in his longest outing since June 19, 2014. He struck out seven and allowed just one hit through the first five innings. The 28-year old right-hander opened the season with a victory against Miami on April 11 and then defeated the Padres two weeks later. The victory snapped a 13-start winless streak and was Wheeler’s first victory at Citi Field this season, despite allowing just 10 earned runs over his last 37 2-3 innings at home. New York roughed up Austin Voth (0-1), who was making his major league debut. After a quiet first inning that included the 26-year old right-hander striking out Mets leadoff hitter Brandon Nimmo on three pitches, Voth ran into immediate trouble in the second. Flores singled to lead off the frame and moved to second on a Plawecki single. Voth was unable to help his own cause, pausing for too long after fielding Jose Reyes’ chopper to throw out the still speedy infielder. Amed Rosario remained hot, singling through the right side to score Flores with the first run of the game. Wheeler lofted a sacrifice fly and Nimmo drove in a run with a groundout to give New York a three-run lead. The Mets reached Voth for four in the fifth, three coming on Conforto’s first home run since June 26. Voth, who did not pitch in his two prior stints with Washington allowed all seven runs and struck out three. He was the fourth starting pitcher to make his major league against the Mets, but was the first to suffer a loss. Brandishing a fastball that touched 97 and an assortment of breaking pitches, Wheeler was able to keep Washington off-balance until the Nationals finally broke through on Bryce Harper’s RBI single in the sixth. New York manager Mickey Callaway left Wheeler in the game to face Harper again with a runner on in the eighth, and the right-hander struck out the slumping Harper on seven pitches. Harper finished 1 for 4 and has just two multi-hit games since June 9. The All-Star outfielder had a pre-game meeting with manager Dave Martinez after Harper failed to run out a fifth-inning ground ball Friday. After finding success against Harper, Wheeler wasn’t as lucky against Matt Adams. Adams lofted a fly ball to right field that appeared to carom off a fan’s hands and was played by Jose Bautista, who immediately pointed in the fan’s direction. The play was ruled a home run and after a crew chief review, remained a home run, ending Wheeler’s day. Jeurys Familia pitched a perfect for his 17th save in 21 chances. TRAINER’S ROOM Nationals: RHP Stephen Strasburg (right shoulder inflammation) is scheduled for a rehab start Sunday for Single-A Potomac. Manager Dave Martinez indicated he hoped Strasburg would throw between 80 and 85 pitches. Strasburg would be in position to start Washington’s first game after the All-Star break versus Atlanta . Catcher Matt Wieters was given the day off after playing in three straight games. He was activated from the disabled list on July 9 after missing two months after surgery on his left hamstring. Mets: Infielder T.J. Rivera (Tommy John surgery) was removed after five innings from a rehab game with Triple-A Las Vegas Friday with discomfort in his right arm. He is scheduled to undergo further testing . OF Yoenis Cespedes (strained right hip flexor) is ready to progress to something “a little more strenuous”, although Callaway did not indicate what Cespedes’ next would be. The Mets will play three games against the New York Yankees after the All-Star break and Callaway left open the possibility that the ailing outfielder could serve as the Mets’ designated hitter for the series. Callaway did note that Cespedes would return as New York’s left fielder, ending any speculation of a potential position change for the 32-year old. UP NEXT RHP Jeremy Hellickson (3-1, 3.47 ERA) takes to the mound for Washington in the final game before the All-Star break. Hellickson spun five scoreless frames against Pittsburgh on July 10. Scherzer Leads Nationals To Victory Over Mets

NEW YORK (AP) — Max Scherzer isn’t going to begin a debate over who should start the All-Star Game for the National League. He’s content to let others sort that out while he keeps winning. Scherzer made a final pitch to start the Midsummer Classic on his own mound, Anthony Rendon hit two homers and Bryce Harper also connected, leading the Washington Nationals over the New York Mets 5-4 Thursday night. Scherzer (12-5) didn’t dominate over his seven innings, but managed to tie Philadelphia’s Aaron Nola for the NL lead in wins. He struck out five, boosting his league-leading total to 182. Scherzer deflected a question on whether he should get the start, saying it was “an All-Star question” that he’d talk about at the right time. Before the game, Nationals manager Dave Martinez was more definitive. “I don’t want to be biased,” he said, “but Max Scherzer, yeah, of course.” Fans at Citi Field would rather see Mets ace Jacob deGrom make the start — he tops the majors with a 1.68 ERA, but is just 5-4 in 19 starts because of poor run support. “I know how good he is,” Scherzer said. “He’s having a great year.” Washington won for just the sixth time in 17 games and nudged back over .500 at 47-46. NEW YORK (AP) — Pinch-hitter Brandon Nimmo launched a three-run homer in the bottom of the 10th inning and the New York Mets got another dominant outing from All-Star Jacob deGrom in a 3-0 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday night. Amed Rosario, who had two of New York’s four hits, began the winning rally with a two-out double off Mark Leiter Jr. (0-1) — the first hit for the Mets since the fourth inning. Jose Reyes walked and Nimmo drove Leiter’s next pitch well over the wall in right-center for his first career walk-off RBIs. It was New York’s third game-ending homer in the last six days. Jose Bautista beat Tampa Bay with a grand slam last Friday, and Wilmer Flores connected Monday in the series opener against Philadelphia to help the Mets earn a four-game split. In his final scheduled start before heading to the All-Star Game next Tuesday in Washington, deGrom scattered five hits and matched his longest outing of the season. He struck out seven and lowered his major league-leading ERA to 1.68. Still, the right-hander has only five wins on the season. He’s allowed just one earned run over his last 16 innings but has consistently been hurt by a lack of run support from an anemic New York offense all year. NEW YORK (AP) — Enyel De Los Santos won his major league debut and the Philadelphia Phillies got home runs from Maikel Franco and Odubel Herrera in a 7-3 victory over the New York Mets on Tuesday night. Franco drove in four runs as the Phillies, who began the day tied with Atlanta atop the NL East, won for the 10th time in 13 games. Nick Williams had three hits and two RBIs, and Rhys Hoskins also got three hits. De Los Santos allowed three runs and five hits over 6 1/3 effective innings. The 22-year-old right-hander was called up from Triple-A Lehigh Valley, where he was 9-3 with a 1.89 ERA in 16 starts, and matched against another starter making his big league debut in Drew Gagnon of the Mets. Staked to an early lead and armed with an unorthodox and deceptive slingshot delivery that Philadelphia manager Gabe Kapler dubbed a “crossfire,” De Los Santos (1-0) cruised for most of the night against a scuffling Mets lineup that has managed only eight runs over its last five games. De Los Santos walked three and struck out six. He threw 94 pitches, 58 for strikes. Acquired from San Diego in December for shortstop Freddy Galvis, De Los Santos was scheduled to pitch for the International League in the Triple-A All-Star Game on Wednesday before getting called up. He also was chosen to play for the World Team in Sunday’s All-Star Futures Game. It was the first time a Phillies starter made his debut against another starter in his first outing since Sept. 25, 1944, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. Back then, Charlie Ripple faced Charlie Gassaway of the Chicago Cubs at Shibe Park. Amed Rosario had three hits for the Mets, including two triples to left field. New York has dropped 19 of its last 23 home games. Franco put the Phillies ahead with a three-run homer off Gagnon (0-1) in the second. The third baseman is batting .440 with two homers and seven RBIs over his last eight games. He added an RBI single in the sixth and made several nifty plays on hard-hit grounders. Williams lined a two-run single in the third. Herrera clubbed a solo shot into the Phillies’ bullpen in the fifth for his career-high 16th home run. The 28-year-old Gagnon was charged with six runs and seven hits in 4 2/3 innings. He also hit two batters with pitches. At the plate, Gagnon drove in Rosario with a sacrifice fly — giving his family in attendance something to cheer about. It’s the second DL stint for Frazier during his first season with the struggling Mets. The 32-year-old slugger had never been on the disabled list before 2018. Jacob Rhame will be named the 26th man for today's doubleheader, we’ve also recalled P.J. Conlon and Ty Kelly from Las Vegas. Todd Frazier has been placed on the 10-Day DL with a left rib cage strain. NEW YORK (AP) — Jose Bautista’s grand slam with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted the New York Mets to a 5-1 win over the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday night. Todd Frazier walked and Devin Mesoraco singled to open the ninth against Chaz Roe (1-2) before Amed Rosario’s sacrifice advanced the runners. Roe then got pinch-hitter Dominic Smith on a comebacker and intentionally walked Brandon Nimmo to load the bases. Bautista homered to left field on the first pitch he saw for his first career walk-off blast. It was his sixth homer of the season and gave the Mets their third win in their last 18 games at home. Tampa Bay had a chance to take the lead in the top of the ninth against New York closer Jeurys Familia (4-4) but came up short. After Familia hit Daniel Robertson with a pitch to load the bases, first baseman Wilmer Flores got pinch-runner Hunter Wood out at home despite his high throw. Umpires confirmed the call after Tampa Bay challenged. Familia then struck out Willy Adames to end the threat. Jacob deGrom was once again stellar for the Mets, allowing just one run and four hits while striking out eight and issuing one walk over eight innings. Asdrubal Cabrera gave the Mets a 1-0 lead in the third with an RBI single. DeGrom, who has an 1.80 ERA in his nine starts at Citi Field this season, made his lone mistake of the night when he gave up a tying solo homer to Adames, his third of the season, in the fifth. AN EYE FOR INTERNATIONAL TALENT New York announced Friday the official signings of their top two targets once the international free agent period for 2018-19 opened July 2, awarding a franchise-record $2.7 million signing bonus to 16-year-old Francisco Alvarez from Venezuela. Alvarez was ranked No. 9 on Baseball America’s prospect list, and 13th on the MLB Pipeline list. Freddy Valdez, a 16-year-old outfielder from the Dominican Republic, was awarded a $1.45 million bonus. Baseball America had him as the 29th best prospect, MLB Pipeline ranked him at No. 25. FRESH FACES Tampa signed Shane McClanahan, their 31st overall pick in the 2018 June Draft, on Friday, hours before the official 5 p.m. deadline for teams to sign all of their selections. McClanahan, a 21-year-old lefty from the University of South Florida, will be assigned to the Gulf Coast League Rays. He wasn’t too shabby to open his last collegiate season, and pitching 31.2 innings scoreless innings. LHP Matthew Liberatore, the Rays’ other first-round pick, selected 16th overall, made his debut with the GCL Rays on Friday. He allowed one earned run, one hit, and two walks with one strikeout and a hit batter in 1 2/3 innings, picking up the loss. TRAINER’S ROOM Rays: RHP Chris Archer will return to the rotation and start Monday against Detroit. The ace has been on the disabled list June 5 due to a left abdominal strain. Archer is 3-4 with a 4.24 ERA in 13 starts this season. Mets: Mets manager Mickey Callaway said that it would be “ideal” for RHP Noah Syndergaard to start June vs against Washington if all goes well with his rehab start Sunday at Single-A Brooklyn. MOVES Rays: Tampa Bay recalled LHP Adam Kolarek from Triple-A Durham and designated OF Jerry Hazelbaker for assignment. Mets: RHP Paul Sewald was called up from Triple-A Las Vegas and LHP Jerry Blevins was placed on the bereavement list. UP NEXT Rays: Blake Snell ( 11-4, 2.24 ERA) starts the second game of the series. Snell has won his last three outings, allowing just two runs and eight hits while striking out 26 despite 12 walks in 21 innings.
