N.J. Superintendent Accused Of Defecating On Another School’s Track Resigns

HOLMDEL, N.J. (CBSNewYork) – A New Jersey school superintendent accused of defecating on another school’s track and field has resigned. Kenilworth School Superintendent Thomas Tramaglini allegedly relieved himself on a daily basis at Holmdel High School’s track and field. Police said he was caught in the act in May. Former Kenilworth School Superintendent Thomas Tramaglini (Credit: CBS2) In a statement released this week, the Kenilworth Board of Education said the superintendent has tendered his resignation. He was already put on paid leave . “Based on events unrelated to his service for Kenilworth, it has become clear to both Dr. Tramaglini and the Kenilworth Board of Education that his continued service as Superintendent of Schools has become too much of a distraction to the main mission of the district,” the statement read in part. Tramaglini, 42, of Matawan, lives about three miles from the Holmdel track. He was charged with lewdness, littering and defecating in public. His resignation is effective September 30. The board of education is searching for an interim superintendent in the meantime.

Paterson Teenager Charged In Shooting Death Of Restaurant Owner

PATERSON, N.J. (CBSNewYork) — Police in New Jersey arrested a teenager in connection to the shooting death of a restaurant owner. 29-year-old Rui Zhou was with his wife on East 34th Street in Paterson early Thursday when authorities say he was shot and killed inside his car. Police say he was out making a food delivery for his restaurant, Ming’s Kitchen. Zhou’s wife, 29-year-old Xiaomei Liu, was also in the car but was not hurt. A little over a week ago, a similar scene played out a few miles away. A 27-year-old was shot and killed while making a pizza delivery in Clifton , but the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office says the two incidents are not connected. Investigators say a 17-year-old Paterson resident has been charged as a juvenile in Zhou’s death. Former NJ Archbishop Theodore McCarrick Resigns As Cardinal Amid Sexual Abuse Allegations

VATICAN CITY (CBSNewYork/AP) — Pope Francis has accepted U.S. prelate Theodore McCarrick’s offer to resign from the College of Cardinals following allegations of sexual abuse, including one involving an 11-year-old boy, and ordered him to conduct a “life of prayer and penance” in a home to be designated by the pontiff until a church trial is held, the Vatican said Saturday. Francis acted swiftly after receiving McCarrick’s letter of resignation Friday evening, after recent weeks have brought a spate of allegations that the 88-year-old prelate in the course of his distinguished clerical career had sexually abused both boys and adult seminarians. The revelations posed a test of the pontiff’s recently declared resolve to battle what he called a “culture of cover-up” of similar abuse in the Catholic’s church’s hierarchy. A man, who was 11 at the time of the first alleged instance of abuse, says a sexually abusive relationship continued for two more decades. McCarrick has denied the initial allegation. The prelate rose steadily up the U.S. Church’s ranks, from auxiliary bishop in New York City, to bishop in Metuchen, New Jersey, to archbishop of Newark, New Jersey, and then to Archbishop of Washington, D.C., the nation’s capital, the city where the papal ambassador to the United States is based. While most of the scandals involving pedophile clergy have involved rank-and-file priests, some cases involved bishops, and there are a few involving cardinals, including a current case in Australia of one of Pope Francis’ closest advisers, Cardinal George Pell, who now faces a criminal trial in his homeland. But the Holy See’s announcement about McCarrick said that Francis was taking action, by isolating McCarrick and ordering penance even before “accusations made against him are examined in a regular canonical trial.” In addition, Francis, “ordered his suspension from the exercise of any public ministry,” indicating he was approving the measure already in effect since last month. A Catholic University canon law expert, Kurt Martens, noted that this was the first time an order of penance and prayer had been issued before a church trial could take place. Since he is over 80, McCarrick was already no longer eligible to vote in a conclave to elect a pope. But being a “prince of the church,” as cardinals are sometimes called, is a top honor of the church, and those elevated to that rank are called upon to advise the pope. Bishops have been implicated in the sexual abuse scandals that have stained the Catholic church’s reputation worldwide for decades now, but often for their roles in covering up for pedophile priests by shuffling them from parish to parish and keeping the faithful in the dark about the allegations about clergy whose pastoral duties often bring them into contact with minors. Earlier this month, an Australia bishop became the most senior Roman Catholic cleric to be convicted of covering up child sex abuse. Adelaide Archbishop Philip Wilson was sentenced to 12 months in detention by an Australian court in a landmark case welcomed by some abuse survivors as a strong warning to institutions that fail to protect children. NJ Woman Who Survived Crash That Killed Husband, 4 Daughters Speaks Out

TEANECK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) — A New Jersey woman who survived a crash that killed her husband and four daughters on a Delaware highway is speaking out for the first time. The crash happened earlier this month as the family from Teaneck was headed home from a vacation in Ocean City, Maryland. Authorities said a pickup truck heading in the wrong direction on Route 1 in Delaware collided with their minivan, killing 61-year-old Audi Trinidad and his daughters, 20-year-old Kaitlyn, 17-year-old Danna and 13-year-old twins Melissa and Allison. Their mother, Mary Rose, was the only one to survive. Authorities say the four girls were not wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash. “I lost my family last July 6 because of a man in a truck crossed a wide grassy median and struck our car coming in the wrong direction,” Mary Rose said at a news conference Friday. “He is still walking free and I have to bury my husband and four daughters.” So far, criminal charges have not yet been filed in the case. Mary Rose said Friday that she wants justice for her family and to see the driver of the pickup “criminally prosecuted.” “All my broken bones and injuries will heal but not the unbearable pain my heart,” she said. “Now that they’re all gone, I have nothing to look forward to but justice for them.” Attorneys for the family say they’ve been told the investigation into the crash is “complicated” and may take a few months. Mary Rose, who spent her life helping others as a nurse, won’t be able to hold a funeral for her family until she’s well enough to attend. “She’s got a broken left arm with infections, both knees are fractured with surgery, she has fractured ribs, fractured shoulders and a fractured right hip,” lawyer Diane Lucianna said. Doctors say it may be weeks before she walks again.

Cory Booker , D-N.J., is coming out against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh , saying if you don’t oppose the judge, you are “complicit in evil.” What’s behind the heated rhetoric? As CBS2’s Political Reporter Marcia Kramer reports, Booker appears to be positioning himself to run for president in 2020 with a call to defeat Kavanaugh. “You are either complicit in the evil, you are either contributing to the wrong, or you are fighting against it,” he said, trying mightily to outdo progressive icons Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren and others by invoking the Bible in passionate attempt to derail President Donald Trump’s pick for the court. “I’m here to call on folk to understand that in a moral moment, there is no neutral. In a moral moment, there is no bystander,” he added. Speaking at the press conference with religious and political leaders, Booker insisted “this is not a political moment, this is not a partisan moment; this is a moral moment.” Hogwash, political experts say. “For him to say it’s not political, it’s moral is something that many people would suggest is absolutely not true,” said Jeanne Zaino, a professor of political science at Iona College. She called Booker’s comments “inflamed rhetoric” – words that will have little effect in convincing red state Democrats to vote against Kavanaugh. “In the end, Democrats can do very little on this nomination, which is why this is more about people like Cory Booker setting themselves up to appeal to the progressive left in advance of 2020, where he is… one of the leading contenders for the Democratic nomination.” “Doesn’t matter what Senator Booker said, this is pure politics. He’s found his #MeToo moment,” political consultant Hank Sheinkopf said. “Kavanaugh could be a stick figure in a field, as far as this is concerned. This is Cory Booker’s direct shot at Donald Trump to get in line to be president of the United States.” “He has shown us who he is,” Booker said. “In a moral moment, will we do nothing?” Sheinkopf said this is Booker’s attempt to elbow others out of the way, including U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand , D- N.Y. But she has one advantage: her Senate seat is up this year, so she’s free to run for anything in 2020. Booker’s seat, however, is up in 2020. Whether he decides to run for one race or both simultaneously remains to be seen.

New DNA Testing Helps Identify Remains Of 9/11 Victim Nearly 17 Years Later

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – It has been nearly 17 years since the September 11 th terror attacks , and remains of one of the victims have just been identified. As CBS2’s Cindy Hsu reports, the medical examiner’s officer was able to make the ID through a new kind of DNA testing. More than 2,700 people were killed when the Twin Towers were attacked, including 26-year-old Scott Johnson who was working as a securities analyst at an investment bank on the 89 th floor of the South Tower. The Montclair, New Jersey man was a big ice hockey player, so his family donated a hockey puck in remembrance to the 9/11 Memorial Museum. You can also find his name at the South Memorial Pool. The only thing found at the scene for his family to hold onto was his wallet – until now. This week, the medical examiner’s office announced it has identified Johnson’s bone through new DNA testing, where special chemicals are used to remove DNA from the bone fragments. One of the main difficulties in the process of going through 22,000 remains is how degraded the fragments are. “These remains went through, at Ground Zero, things like fire and water, jet fuel, sunlight, mold and bacteria – these will all destroy DNA,” said Mark Desire, of the medical examiner’s office. Johnson is now the 1,642 nd person to be identified. So far, 60 percent of those who died at the Twin Towers have been identified through remains, and each time a family is notified, it hits home for the forensics team. “It gets very emotional each time, and that relationship and the ‘thank yous’ and the hugging, it’s a very special project,” Desire said. He said the office made a promise to 9/11 families to keep searching for the remains of their loved ones, and he hopes more advances in DNA testing will allow them to keep that promise. The medical examiner’s office says the last ID was made in August of last year, but the victim’s family did not want the name released.

Drunk Driver Leaves Trail Of Destruction Through Streets Of Hoboken

HOBOKEN, N.J. (CBSNewYork) — Smashed and sideswiped, dozens of car owners woke up to see their rides banged up in Hoboken early Wednesday. 93-year-old Vinnie Wassman was one of dozens left wondering how and when it happened. The entire drivers side of his SUV was sideswiped by a drunk driver, along with at least three dozen other cars on the same street. “I didn’t know until this morning,” Wassman said. “Then I was surprised!” The individual, a 22 yr old male from Union City, is under arrest for DWI, two counts of assault by auto, and Leaving the Scene of an accident. There are many more than a half dozen cars struck. After getting off work late Tuesday, he went to a bar on the heavily trafficked Washington Street where he met two women. The women told police he claimed he was a livery cab driver and could take them home, so they took him up on his offer. What followed was a frightening ride, weaving side to side on nearby Bloomfield Street from First to Eighth Streets striking parked cars along the way around 1:20 a.m. Laura Golden says the bumper on her SUV was torn clean off. “Nobody was in around, so in that regard we’re grateful that nobody was hurt except for occupants of the car,” Golden said. Bob Chase witnessed the chaos play out right in front of his home. He says the driver kept driving despite the deployment of his airbag. “He looked out the window driving with the door open,” Chase said. “I’ve never seen anything like that.” Cops quickly apprehended Allen after his eight-block ride of terror, saying he was too drunk to even stand. Hoboken Police Chief Ken Ferrante says the whole experience was a first for him. “We’ve had a couple of these types of situations where for long stretches, one block, two blocks, a drunk driver is hitting cars,” he said. “Going seven or eight blocks, this many cars… I don’t recall in my 26 years.” Neighbors in the tree-lined neighborhood say they hope they don’t see this much activity on their street anytime soon. Allen and his two passengers were all injured and were taken to a hospital. The two passengers remained hospitalized Wednesday afternoon, but further details on their injuries were not disclosed.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) – A representative for Demi Lovato says she is awake and recovering with her family after the pop singer was hospitalized Tuesday for an overdose. Lovato’s story is one many can relate to, including Kevin Parker who lost his leg due to complications with an overdose in 2011. “My heart stopped in the ambulance,” said Parker “I spent three weeks in a coma.” Parker’s addiction started with painkillers after a car crash and led to harsher drugs before getting sober for seven years. Parker spent months recovering in a treatment program at Staten Island University Hospital where he later volunteered. Now he says his life is dedicated to helping people going through the same thing he did. “Addiction is not biased,” he said. “It can happen to anybody. You can be black, white, yellow, poor, rich, famous.” That message is echoed by Dr. Lipi Roy of NYU Langone Health. “Just like if you had diabetes, I would make sure you are receiving treatment chronically for as long as you have the disease,” said Roy, adding Lovato’s condition is an opportunity for parents to talk to their children. “If you find that your child is using, misusing drugs… get them the care that they need so they’re not isolated,” she said. Parker agrees and says his key to staying sober is all about daily support from family and sticking to rehab programs. “Somebody in recovery that actually beat drugs and addiction, I see them as the strongest people I’ve ever seen in my life,” said Parker. “I consider them warriors.” Reports on Tuesday night gave conflicting reports about what kind of overdose Lovato had. The Los Angeles Fire Department confirmed that they transported a 25-year-old woman after responding to a medical call at a home on 8000 block of Laurel View Drive, at 11:22 a.m. Tuesday. Lovato owns a home on that block, and Entertainment Tonight reports she was in stable condition after being transported for a drug overdose. Last month, Lovato released a song called “Sober,” with lyrics appearing to reference struggles with her six-year sobriety . She co-owns a Los Angeles rehab facility where she sought treatment in 2011. In her YouTube documentary released last year called “Demi Lovato, Simply Complicated,” she openly discusses her cocaine use and battles with alcohol. Lovato is currently on tour, where she has been open about living with bipolar disorder , for which she received a diagnosis in 2010. PERTH AMBOY, N.J. (CBSNewYork) – A police officer in New Jersey is being credited with saving a life after a man on railroad tracks who was unaware an oncoming train was about to hit him. Perth Amboy officer Kyle L. Savoia’s body camera recorded him racing to intercept a man in a red shirt laying face down on the tracks, unaware of a train barreling towards him last week. Savoia waved to stop the train while shouting at the dazed man, who got up and jumped out of the way at the last moment as the train rolled to an abrupt stop. “Where’d you come from?” the man says afterwards. “Thank you, oh my God, thank you so much.” The 22-year-old Savoia was dispatched for a welfare check at the Perth Amboy station Thursday around 8 a.m. The officer says when he got the call he knew there’d be a man on the tracks, but he didn’t realized there would be an oncoming train. Once he saw it bearing down, he knew he’d have to act fast. “In a split second I decided to start running,” he told CBS2. “In that situation, your training takes over.” It turns out he man was homeless, and after being taken to Raritan Bay Medical Center treatment he showed up at police headquarters to thank Savoia again. “He said I’m a true hero to him,” Savoia said. “That he had a two-year-old, that he had a family to go home to.” Savoia lost his own father, a longtime sergeant with the Perth Amboy Police Department, just two years ago. “What I thought of was his father, how proud his father would be in heaven looking down on his son,” Perth Amboy Chief Roman McKeon said. Ask Savoia, whose own career started only seven years ago, and he’ll tell you he was just doing his job.

TOM’S RIVER, N.J. (CBSNewYork) – A restaurant was the scene of a sublime act of gratitude: A generous gesture with no words spoken, no names exchanged, just a Good Samaritan covering the food tab for a group of volunteer EMTs as a thank you. The bill simply said: “Paid, thank you, for all you do, have a great day, recovering addict.” It’s a message Capt. Alyssa Golembeski of the Toms River First Aid Squad will never forget, written on the back of a receipt that she now hangs in her office, reports CBS2’s Dick Brennan. “I am honestly just so humbled and so astounded because it is something I never would have expected,” she said. The squad’s captain and five other emergency medical technicians went out for a bite to eat last Friday after a long overnight shift. It was 7 a.m. at the IHOP on Route 37 East when the manager walked over. “He said, ‘I just wanted to let you guys know,’ and he hands us the receipt. That somebody paid your bill,” said Golembeski. That somebody – an anonymous woman who covered their nearly $78 tab – left before the volunteer EMTs could see her face. All they know is she is a recovering addict. “She is probably local, so there is a really good chance that either one of my crews, or the other five volunteer crews, were the ones that helped her get the help she needed to start the process of recovery,” said Golembeski. Her crew members say they respond to overdoses often. “The opiod crisis is terrible across the country but particularly in New Jersey,” she said. “To see there is an addict who is actively in recovery is just amazing to me.” “People need to realize that it a disease and these people do deserve to be cared for,” said First Lt. Keith Rodriguez. “It’s nice to see that you care for someone and they want to give back to you.” This charity has never happened to these volunteers, but the owner of the IHOP says it actually occurs frequently at the restaurant – usually though with veterans. “It’s just treating people like human beings and helping each other,” said restaurant owner George Ebinger. The crew hopes to one day thank this woman in person, but they realize they may never have the opportunity. “Part of the process is not coming forward and not doing this for your own gratification but make amends with the people you may have hurt,” said Golembeski. “So if she would like to come forward, I would love it but I understand if she doesn’t want to.” The restaurant owner says his manager knows who the woman is, because he cashed her out, but he refuses to say since she wants to remain anonymous.

E-Scooters Seen As Fix For NJ Commuter Parking

MADISON, N.J. (CBSNewYork) – MADISON, N.J. (CBSNewYork) – An alternate way of getting to the train station may be just down the road in New Jersey. Soon a select group of commuters could be powered by electric scooters, reports CBS2’s Natalie Duddridge. A transit company called Boxcar teamed up with the mayor of Madison to give people a new option for traveling a short distance from home to the train station and solve the commuter parking problem “One way to get cars out of downtown and people onto mass transit might be electric scooters,” said Boxcar SEO Joe Colangelo. “That’s really our target market here in the suburbs.” Online applicants will be chosen to test out the proposal this fall. Riders will each get a scooter for free that can go up to 15 miles on a single charge. “We’re going to require you to have a driver’s license and to participate in a safety training session and to wear a helmet,” said Colangelo. Safety was one of the issues the mayor wanted to tackle before green lighting the pilot program. “One of our council members was in China and talked about the fact that they have a share program and that their scooters were all over the place, and he was concerned,” said Madison mayor Robert Conley. Boxcar says it will build a secure storage facility inside the train station. When users return, they can ride it home, keep it overnight and charge it back up. New Jersey Stores Struggle To Stay Afloat After July Facade Collapse

RIVER EDGE, N.J. (CBSNewYork) — Store owners at a busy shopping plaza in New Jersey are still waiting to get back to normal more than two weeks after the facade on their building collapsed, shuttering several businesses. 20 River Edge business owners say they saw their livelihoods come crashing down along with Kress Plaza’s facade on July 3rd. “I’ve been out of business for almost a month now,” JS Taekwondo owner Jisung Yun said. “It’s hurting us quite a bunch.” Michael and Sara Morea share Yun’s pain. They’ve been closed for weeks and call the experience “an emotional roller coaster.” They’re supposed to be celebrating one year in business, but instead they say it feels like a funeral. “This is everything for us, our future is looking bleak,” Michael says. River Edge Jewelers is feeling the same pain at what’s normally one of their busiest seasons. “Extremely frustrating,” James Boujakli said. “Me and my brother built this business in town and now it’s just slowly starting to deteriorate away.” Nine store owners want to know when they can get back to business, but say they’ve gotten no answers from Kress Associates, the owner of their section of the strip. CBS2 reached out to the company multiple times, but didn’t get a response. Additional calls and emails to town officials also went unanswered. The other half of the mall is owned by Barry Wong, so far he’s gotten four of his businesses back up and running. He’s hopeful he will restore power and gas to the others by the end of the week. Officials say inspectors were last at the building was in 2015, when the facade was installed. The Lions Club in River Edge is accepting donations for the shop owners to offer some relief while they’re out of business.

Locker Full Of Paintings Nets Dealer De Kooning Works Possibly Worth Millions

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) — An art dealer’s $15,000 to buy the contents of a New Jersey storage locker filled with paintings turned out to be an amazing deal. The New York Post reports David Killen found half a dozen paintings believed to be done by Dutch American artist Willem de Kooning, whose abstract paintings have sold for millions of dollars at auction. Killen bought the contents of the Ho-Ho-Kus, New Jersey, locker last year. The paintings were originally from the studio of art conservator Orrin Riley, who died in 1986, and his partner, Susanne Schnitzer, who died in 2009. The paintings aren’t signed, but Killen reached out to an expert who’s confident they were done by de Kooning, an abstract expressionist from the Netherlands who moved to the United States and died in 1997.

‘Wally,’ Goat Abandoned At Secaucus Walmart, Now At Sanctuary

SECAUCUS, N.J. (CBSNewYork) – A goat abandoned Thursday at the Secaucus Walmart Super Center has been renamed Wally and taken to The Barnyard Sanctuary animal pet farm and rescue due to his infection with a contagious disease. The dwarf fainting goat was found Thursday morning running loose in one of the nation’s largest Walmarts. Animal control officers took the little kid to the sanctuary where he was estimated to be 3 to 4 months old. In addition, caretakers also discovered the goat was sick with orf, a viral disease which can affect goats, sheep and humans. Workers at the sanctuary named the baby goat “Wally” — in honor of Walmart — and placed him in quarantine for further treatment. “We believe him to be a Dwarf Nigerian, maybe a fainting goat, as he gets stiff in the hind legs sometimes, if startled,” the rescue workers posted on Facebook. Secaucus Mayor Michael Gonnelli said the rescue was an easy one. “It didn’t fight us, it went down like a lamb,” he said. “Anytime we can save an animal and help an animal, that’s what we do.” “It’s pretty cool that they did save the goat,” said Walmart employee George Arcos. The city thinks Wally’s owner may have been overwhelmed. “I guess they thought they were trying to save him, but maybe they couldn’t manage him, and they dumped him. We found him and we sent them to a rescue down in Route 80,” the mayor said. “He will be a happy goat from now on.” The goat’s ear was tagged, meaning it was marked for slaughter, CBS2’s Dave Carlin reported. The tag was from Indiana.

Syndergaard Celebrates Day Before Subway Series With Baseball Camp For Kids

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – The second half of the baseball season starts Friday for the Yankees and Mets with part two of their Subway Series at Yankee Stadium, and Noah Syndergaard will be on the mound for the Mets. On Thursday, he spent his final day off with some kids at a baseball camp in New Jersey, reports CBS2’s Otis Livingston. The youngsters were full of questions for the star. “Will you have three strikeouts tomorrow?” one little boy asked. “I hope I have a lot more than three,” the pitcher replied. “Will you throw a no-hitter tomorrow?” another boy asked. “I’m gonna try… They’re a good team,” the pitcher replied. But not all the questions were about baseball. Somebody even asked the man nicknamed “Thor” if his long blond locks bother him when he pitches. “It’s worth it, having the hair so,” answered Syndergaard. “How long did it take to grow your hair?” one boy asked. “I’ve been growing it out for the last three years, now I’m just in a maintenance phase,” answered Syndergaard. It’s been a rough season for Syndergaard and the Mets. He was injured since late May until making a successful return last Friday. He and Mets ace Jacob deGrom have been at the center of trade rumors recently, but the fan favorite is hoping he stays put in the Big Apple. “I love New York City,” he said. “I love doing things like this, seeing all the young Mets fans out here and it brings a lot of joy to myself personally. “I’ve embraced New York City and New York has embraced me, and hopefully I can stay a Met for the remainder of my career,” he continued. “But for right now, I really have no say in that. I have zero control over it.” The Citi Noah Syndergaard Baseball Pro Camp works with Tickets For Kids Charities to provide camp scholarships to disadvantaged kids. Thursday’s group consisted of roughly 200 youngsters in grades 1 thru 8 – mostly Met fans, but ironically, it was a Yankees fan that won the homerun hitting contest with Syndergaard pitching. “It feels really good,” said Gavin D’Altrui. “It’s fun to hit off of him, too.” The Subway Series will feature two teams headed in opposite directions: The Yankees near the top of the majors, the Mets closer to the bottom. But after losing two of three on their home field in June, expect the Mets to be geared up for a win in the series.
